(Arcade PCB) Primal Rage - Completed w/No Rounds Lost, 1CC 1080p60

  • Today I decided to record a direct feed 1CC of this game for a few reasons...but mainly because many people don't realize that Primal Rage is actually a good fighting game.
    Reasons people dismiss this game too quickly range from: they see the commands being something like hold X then quarter circle forward, and don't want to try an input method that differs from what they are used to. Ironically, the final revision of this game allows you to do Street Fighter style inputs or the original method the game shipped with.
    Another reason people don't give this game a proper try is because it is emulated very poorly. You really need to play this game at the arcade to experience it. The dedicated cabinet featured an awesome sound system, as well.
    There are a few half-decent ports, but none of them are arcade perfect. The closest ports are the Midway Arcade Treasure Vol 2 compilations, but even those aren't 100% accurate. Combos that work in that version may not work in the arcade, and vice versa (see Sauron's s.3+4 linking back into s.3). Also the blood effect is not good, where it appears as a white dusty "sweat" on both the consoles and in mame.
    Why I really enjoy the game, besides being able to control a raptor:
    1) There were innovative concepts that appeared in this game that would go on to be fighting game staples, like short hops (which strangely only work in a 2-player match).
    2) The combo system is VERY well developed and also balanced with it's patented "no-cheese" icon; this appears when you try to use a move multiple times and that would lead to an infinite combo.
    3) There are also some crazy Easter Eggs, like the volleyball mini-game; this is activated by 2 non-cpu players knocking one of the human followers back and forth at least 10 times on the beach (Sauron's) stage.
    This footage is captured from a genuine Atari Primal Rage version 2.3 arcade PCB, and is played on default settings.
    My capture setup is as follows, if you're interested: Primal Rage v2.3 PCB - JNX Rage adapter - HAS v3.1 supergun connected via scart to OSSC set at line 3X mode, HDMI output to Avermedia Live Gamer HD capturing at 1080p/60fps.

    When I was 10 years old this game was the coolest sh*t under the sun! We had the DOS version at home, which ran just as well as the arcade if not better with optimal RAM. The stop-motion animation still looks pretty sweet actually.

    • @Pete_Hahn
      @Pete_Hahn  2 года назад +6

      I heard the DOS version was really good, but I unfortunately never had a chance to try it. And I agree, the stop motion movement still holds up really well today.
      Thanks for commenting on my run, I appreciate it!

      Did they ever come out with a Windows 95 version? If so, I'd imagine such a version would have been the most true port of the original arcade version.

      Sadly no, just the DOS version if it had a 95 Release at least then it probably would’ve had the original Red book audio soundtrack like the arcade.

    This version by far looks the best. Closest to the original arcade version I knew and loved! The frame rate is beautiful, and Talon is such a scrappy little guy! Don’t they each have two finishing moves? Some of it is only a vague memory lol. Always loved playing as Talon or Sauron. Thanks for posting this, I really enjoyed it! Awesome job!!!

      This IS the arcade version, I've captured directly from an original Primal Rage arcade board via a supergun device! :)

      The SNES looked better but at least the Genesis port had Chaos’s golden shower fatality left in tact. Damn Nintendo and there censorship. As with all Genesis fighting games I preferred the 6 button controller over the 4 button SNES controller.

  • @alexk8792
    @alexk8792 2 года назад +5

    That was an awesome run, dude.
    Also, I couldn't help but notice the way that the opponents in the final battle had this flickering, transparent look to them. I'm getting the feeling that since the draconians have supernatural abilities and were worshipped as gods, they came back as ghosts for the final battle, and the way that they became skeletons upon their second death meant a permanent end to them since the final battle took place in that dino-graveyard. What do you think?

    • @Pete_Hahn
      @Pete_Hahn  2 года назад +1

      Thank you very much!
      And, I like your theory! I know why they flicker; the reason is to show that a finishing move was performed on the them in the lead up to the final battle and that they are now in a weakened state compared to before. I tested this by not doing a fatality on the first opponent and sure enough, that dinosaur was the only one solid like normal during the final battle.

    How did you capture this footage from your supergun?

    • @Pete_Hahn
      @Pete_Hahn  3 месяца назад +1

      The HAS supergun has a scart / RGB output that I connected to a scart switch which outputs to the OSSC scaler (Open Source Scan Converter). The OSSC was set to line triple mode and the HDMI output was split - one output to an Avermedia Live Gamer HD capture card and other to my TV to play off of.
      I've since upgraded my capture setup with a better scaler (RetroTink 5X) and better capture card (Magewell Pro Capture HDMI 4K+ LT).

    Do you know how many volts the board uses? I recently got the Primal Rage PCB board myself and I can't figure out what volts it needs in the power supply to turn on.

    • @Pete_Hahn
      @Pete_Hahn  2 года назад

      I have my Primal Rage board hooked up to a supergun device and just set the 5V to as close to 5 as I can, maybe .01 or .02 higher.
      If you're running this board in a cabinet, I've seen people have issues with it due to the draw of the other components like the monitor. If you can measure your 5V right at the board then you can see what it's actually getting from the power supply.

    Where is that final boss dinosaur?

    • @Pete_Hahn
      @Pete_Hahn  Год назад

      Unfortunately there was no "final boss" Dino in the first Primal Rage. Instead for the final battle you fight what you see in my video, a gauntlet of all of the playable Dinos. According to the Primal Rage Wiki, there was a plan to have a final encounter: primalrage.fandom.com/wiki/Necrosan
      Thankfully, Primal Rage 2 corrected this and Necrosan is in as the final boss. He's a huge alien dino that was brought to Earth by the meteor that woke the Dino Gods!
