Yes, people who dig up bones are called paleontologists and not archaeologists. Let's all just ignore that inaccuracy and proceed with the video. Thank you :-)
I remember this game in my local arcade when i was a kid. It was almost always empty because most people were playing SF2 and MK then later Samurai Shodown and Killer Instinct. I think maybe it was because of the control scheme because the graphics look good and actually holds up.
Not sure but I think I'm it's #1 fan. I have every home version boxed including Tiger Electronics R-ZONE. Action figures in the box from when I bought them in 1994, all the rage CD, the book Primal Rage the Avatars, comic series. My Crown Jewel is my Arcade1up wrapped with Primal Rage decals and a real arcade board. Full arcade machine is just to big. Thank you so much for honoring my favorite game.
I think it would have been funny if instead of just censoring the "Golden Shower" finisher, the developers of the SNES version subverted expectations by having an actual golden shower, as in the bathroom fixture, fall on your defeated opponent. It would have been a lot more creative than what we ended up getting.

Huge dinosaur fan when this released. My friend told me about it and I ran to the local University to visit their arcade. I spent over $20 in quarters just that one day. I reached the end of the game I was quite irritated that there wasn't a final boss. Once my awe of the game faded a bit, I hated the fact that there were 2 gorilla characters, as well as Sauron and Diablo seeming too similar. To me I always felt that this game only really had 5 characters.
It is bizarre they never thought to include any bosses in the game. once you beat all the dinosaurs, the game ends, that's it. Could have really done with a huge badass dinosaur, maybe a giant Goro-esque mutant one or something. Also, totally should have had the monsters from Rampage as hidden characters in the game!
They had plans for a final boss encounter. Between the cost of the models they digitized, and the notoriously time consuming process of stop motion animation, they must've opted for an endurance round as a quick fix solution instead.
4:47 ... That is not Peter Kleinow. Peter can be seen working at 3:18 and 3:20. Peter did a lot of commercial stop motion for the Pillsbury doughboy and Gumby. He also animated for Gremlins, and the Terminator 1 & 2. The man posing with the Terminator puppet looks like model maker Monty Shook, but I could be wrong about that.
It's Been a while since I was very busy looking at some classic 1980s and 1990s arcade games and now after for about 4 months..I've finally made my return to this very wonderful channel for some Retrotastic arcade history..Primal Rage is what I called The Mortal Kombat of Prehistoric era..Talon is one of my three favorite dinosaurs along with Vertigo and Sauron..the gameplay looks pretty decent..also it each characters have their own fatalities like Mortal Kombat..this is another excellent video and I'm ready to grabbed my bowl of popcorn and a fresh cold soda for it..Thank You, Mr. Patman
I got into this game in highschool abt 10 years ago, played it everywhere on my phone and didnt even know it was on midway arcade treasures 2. Still a favorite
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Primal Rage is one of my true loves of the early 90’ arcade era. I can’t even begin to think of how many 10p coins I’ve dumped in over the years,so on getting my own Hyperspin arcade machine,i made sure on first turning on that Primal Rage was included..thank god it was. The Valley Of Gwangi was a childhood favourite of mine,so on seeing this my mind was blown!
_Primal Rage_ was my absolute favorite arcade game from 90's, although I was just a kid mashing buttons with no idea how to perform any of the special attacks. Still, it had giant dinosaur-esque monsters fighting over a post-apocalyptic Earth and that was more than enough to keep me hooked on it. Fast forward to the Covid lockdown where, feeling nostalgic for simpler childhood times, I looked up _Primal Rage_ playthroughs and found my love for this game returning with a vengeance. One particular player was pulling of attacks and combos I never could. I also discovered the ability to eat worshippers and all the various endings (something young me didn't even know existed). Those playthroughs just made me even more curious about the game's creation and other background material. The more I discovered the more it made me realize this game has all the elements for an amazing modern remake. Not only could the game mechanics be refined and expanded (like worshippers playing a more active role in battle) but the lore and characters fleshed out to give the neo-prehistoric world more substance. For instance, show Sauron's tribe serving up live human sacrifices to their patron god like professional chefs presenting their dishes with flair. Or have the tribes of Blizzard and Armadon be conditional allies that focus on spiritual enlightenment and restoration of the best parts of the old world. Maybe include a _Mortal Kombat_ style story mode to flesh out the gods and their histories and interactions with one another. But these are just the thoughts of a guy who still thinks giant monsters fighting is really awesome and would love to see them come back under the right game developers. Fingers crossed it isn't just a fantasy of mine.
I still watch every Godzilla movie that comes out so I enjoy the giant monsters fighting as well :-) I'm glad my video could scratch that nostalgic itch for you
The control scheme also works in Street Fighter 2, and is a technique called negative edging. T Hawk uses this well, as his 360 throw doesn’t have a whiff animation. as long as the punch buttons are held ahead of time, the 360 can be spun on the joystick, then the punch button can be let go. The throw will either come out, or t hawk will just block. In essence, you can block while inputting the move, making it completely safe.
This will be a DInorrific good time to watch! But I gotta wait until I’m off work. Just had to right a comment to quote my excitement for a fresh PatmanQC release.

My dad was supposed to get me it the same day, but didn't. Weird memory. lol. I do enjoy the game though! I think I have it on 3DO.
Used to go to Albertsons to play this game after school🤣 the soundtrack was so memorable because it was loud, one quarter got me to the end. Vertigo was always mysterious to me, Diablo reminded me of Scorpion. well I eventually bought it for SNES good Video!
I'm a big fan of this game from the arcades, I gotta say this is the best comparison video for Primal Rage. A couple years ago I did alot of research between the ports, since the MAME version has its issues. I learned alot of new stuff that I didn't know about the ports and its backstory!
I'm so glad you just talk real, it sounds like you are just explaining things exactly as you understand them and not trying to fit a script. An example of this is when you mentioned Mame at the end, I think it's funny how some youtubers seem to think they will get sued if they acknowledge its existence. Excellent video all around, you really show that you spent some time playing which is appreciated.

In my theory the monsters represent the seven deadly sins: Diablo - Wrath Sauron - Gluttony Vertigo - Lust Chaos - Envy Blizzard - Pride Armadon - Sloth Talon - Greed At least that's my thoughts on the game.
You're definitely onto something with this theory lol. My favorite is Blizzard because he has a prideful style and nature about himself as he beats ass with ice lol.👼

As an aspiring paleontologist, the opening monologue brings me so much pain but it also gives me a deep belly laugh that would make Santa himself jealous.

Mortal Kombat 2 and primal rage were always on big arcade movie theater like screens and the joysticks were on a pedestal and the speakers would be loud both games with two big screens that was when Peter Piper pizza was actually Koo. Man I think that was back in 93 or 94 it was before killer instinct virtual fighter and mk3 came out. Those arcade machines would be loud and you could see the fatalities on both games on big screens I was still a little kid but those were some of the best memories
The special move control scheme made it kind of bulky. I always felt if they just gave the game more traditional fighting game controls it would have taken off more and kept people playing longer.
@@JamesChessman the Saturn port is pretty good. I like the Genesis as well because it allowed you to map specials to two of the buttons on the 6 button pad. Made it a lot easier to play and pull off combos. It looked terrible though. 😂
@@PistNRods haha yeah it looks bad on genesis, it could have been been much better. I actually just tried running the actual arcade game in MAME… in web browser, it works great and I didn’t realize MAME could run like this. The actual arcade game looks awesome
I like this game it’s a shame it doesn’t get recognized as MK does but nonetheless it’s fun and I’ve always liked the ending artwork it reminds me of the Topps Dinosaurs Attacks! cards back in the day
Brilliant episode, I remember getting this on the megadrive when it was released , being a massive fan of dinosaurs in general I loved it although it was a little too short, Im going to have to play it again though because I never realized the megadrive version only had 2 of the 3 fatalities! Thanks PatmanQC! If they had continued developing Primal Rage and had not gone down the road of humans/cancelled game and stuck with lots of different dinosaurs it was already potentially a few steps ahead of SF and MK, simply biting another dinosaur was way more satisfying than punching/kicking in other games
I played primal rage 2, Tom Brady from Evo competitions had the circuit board for rage 2 inside one of his arcade cabinets. Unfortunately he sold it so only got to play it once, thought it was the wrong game when I saw Arik who I mistook for Tusk from KI 2.
Ha, I bet the Flintstones Car did exist in some form, but only when the Wooley Mammoth felt like squirting water from its nose trunk onto the prehistoric vehicle. ;)
I have only experienced the SNES version as a kid and loved it.They didn't have it on arcade where I lived. Later on as a late teen I got the Midway Arcade Treasures with this game on it and was pleasantly surprised on how the arcade version was so much better and getting to play this version finely on the GameCube. The SNES version really held up on its own really well in my opinion. It was truly amazing what the SNES could do pushed to its limits at the time.
Oldest dinosaur fighting game I can remember is Dino Wars on the TRS-80. Terrible game, but it had some impressive scaling effects and synthesized roars for 1980.
Was enthralled by this game ever since seeing the full arcade cabinet in action. Couldn't believe what i was seeing! Bought it on Sega then traded up to the 32x version. Recently found the large box ps1 version at a pawn shop. May not be the best fighter ever but dang does it look amazing. Vertigo's stage still looks awesome. Sauron is the coolest looking character I think, and Chaos was my favorite to play.
The major flaw of Primal Rage is that once the novelty of a prehistoric/dinosaur fighting game wore off, its lacklustre gameplay mechanics were exposed and laid bare for all to see. In my local arcade back in the day, SF2 and KI were king on a consistent basis with huge lineups... but after the first few months, Primal Rage just gathered dust in comparison. I REALLY wanted to like Primal Rage but it's just a shallow fighting game with a dinosaur gimmick.
Thanks for this entertaining feature! PR2 looked horrible with the human characters. Ech! I played this frequently at the local arcade in 93/94. Graphics were impressive, sound was big and loud too.
I did enjoy this. I think Primal Rage dont get enough attention so im glad you did this video. I own the one for Game Gear, Saturn, Genesis, and a copy of the game for the Jag cd. I do think out of them all the Saturn version looks graphically the best though I do like the Genesis version.
Thanks. The Saturn version does look the best. The PC version would have turned out the best in my opinion but the resolution is so much lower for some reason.
I really wish I could get this game even partially working on MAME. Every time I try asking someone on Reddit, all I get are elitist snobs telling me to "get good" at managing arcade ROM's (I'm paraphrasing, but that's the best way to describe it).
It can be a bit difficult especially with different revisions of the rounds and also different emulators. You might just want to try playing it on Xbox or PlayStation as part of the Midway treasures line

Yeah, I understand that they were trying to rush the game out the door, but not having an actual boss is pretty anticlimactic.

The game was actually released in '94 but other than that it's quite informative.
Toobin!! Used to love playing that on my dad's 386 or 486
I played it on the 64 and Amiga
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries awesome... Amiga port looks fab
I had no idea stop motion was used in the creation of this game, I loved Primal Rage as a kid, no wonder it was such a beautiful game
Yes it was, Too bad they screwed up the controls
That Taito dinosaur fighting game looks sick lol.
To bed the playability is not very good
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Yea sucks but it looks very interesting to say the least.
In my theory the monsters represent the seven deadly sins:
Diablo - Wrath
Sauron - Gluttony
Vertigo - Lust
Chaos - Envy
Blizzard - Pride
Armadon - Sloth
Talon - Greed
At least that's my thoughts on the game.
You're definitely onto something with this theory lol. My favorite is Blizzard because he has a prideful style and nature about himself as he beats ass with ice lol.👼
Primal Rage is based on mortal kombat 1 somewhat
7 fighters
Talon is Liu Kang
Sauron is Johnny cage
Blizzard is Sub Zero- Ice
Diablo is Scorpion- Fire
Armadon is Rayden- Lightening
Chaos is Kano- the disgusting one
Vertigo is Sonya- The only female
In the final battle you fight all of them just like shang tsung's morphing in the final battle of MK1.
Forever my favorite arcade game. Long live Primal Rage!
I agree :-)
great job! thanks for doing all of these. I enjoy the history and memories that come flooding back.
Glad you like them! Thank you
As an aspiring paleontologist, the opening monologue brings me so much pain but it also gives me a deep belly laugh that would make Santa himself jealous.
LOL, thanks
Glad I was part of you’re life primal rage
Thank you for mentioning Dino Rex first.
Absolutely, it deserved a mention
Just watching this makes me miss the old arcade days.
You and me both my friend
I remember the toys. I think I had Sauran and my brother had Diablo. They were awesome. I wish I could find less expensive ones. but don't know where to look.
Check eBay
Yes!!! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries hey man, i know you love bowling so i was going to ask you have you tried forevr bowling on the quest 2? Me and the ol lady are having a blast playing it!
@@kcadventures1454 I have been into VR since 1991 or 1992 when the technology really wasn't that great. Unfortunately in 2015 I lost my hands and my feet so I'm not able to do any sort of VR gaming. I bought my son and oculus quest and he really enjoys it though
I never understood why this didn't become a series or get a reboot at some point in the 2010s. I think the controls really hurt it.
I think it hurt it as well
the people who dig up prehistoric fossils are called paleontologists, not archeologists
Archeologist is someone who digs up structures, right?
Like that site in Iraq, or wherever?
We'll just ignore that and proceed with the video
The special move control scheme made it kind of bulky. I always felt if they just gave the game more traditional fighting game controls it would have taken off more and kept people playing longer.
I agree, it really Detracted from the gameplay
Agreed plus the home ports were all lacking
@@JamesChessman the Saturn port is pretty good. I like the Genesis as well because it allowed you to map specials to two of the buttons on the 6 button pad. Made it a lot easier to play and pull off combos. It looked terrible though. 😂
@@PistNRods haha yeah it looks bad on genesis, it could have been been much better. I actually just tried running the actual arcade game in MAME… in web browser, it works great and I didn’t realize MAME could run like this. The actual arcade game looks awesome
I like this game it’s a shame it doesn’t get recognized as MK does but nonetheless it’s fun and I’ve always liked the ending artwork it reminds me of the Topps Dinosaurs Attacks! cards back in the day
Another great video. Always look forward to your humor and knowledge!
Thanks a lot, I appreciate that
Brilliant episode, I remember getting this on the megadrive when it was released , being a massive fan of dinosaurs in general I loved it although it was a little too short, Im going to have to play it again though because I never realized the megadrive version only had 2 of the 3 fatalities!
Thanks a lot glad you enjoyed it. I wasn't too impressed with the follow-up to be honest. The inclusion of the human characters didn't really fit
About to watch i hope u cover PR2 and how the rom was leaked!
I played the holy hell out of Primal Rage. I knew all the moves. I played it on my original Game Boy
I like it as well although not as much as Mortal Kombat or streetfighter
Great overview! Do you know if the copy protection hurdles for arcade emulation have been tackled yet?
Thank you, there are still that the Mame emulator developers haven't beaten yet
I loved the game and have the novel. Blizzard and Chaos are my favorites. The puke, fart, and pee from Chaos was funny
Yes it was :-)
I only played the SNES port. I didn’t realise how good the original was, especially for 1993.
Yes, it really was
Another fine video sir.
Thank you kindly
Love yr channel man! but for future reference, the “degrees” in 720 is silent.
I've never heard it mentioned anywhere else so I wasn't sure, thanks for the correction
I was hoping this one would come up. I own an original Arcade cabinet of it now. I always liked it better than Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 back then.
Excellent, hope you enjoyed it
Primal Rage was definitely made to compete with Mortal Kombat. Not street fighter.
Great work Sir
Many thanks!
I played primal rage 2, Tom Brady from Evo competitions had the circuit board for rage 2 inside one of his arcade cabinets. Unfortunately he sold it so only got to play it once, thought it was the wrong game when I saw Arik who I mistook for Tusk from KI 2.
Ha, I bet the Flintstones Car did exist in some form, but only when the Wooley Mammoth felt like squirting water from its nose trunk onto the prehistoric vehicle. ;)
LOL
Beat this game at Buffalo Bill's in Nevada on one quarter. Spammed fireballs with Diablo
LOL, fantastic
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries made sense when tou brought up the crap AI
I love primal rage. Wasn't huge on the idea of human forms at all in the second one though. Just add more dinosaurs and monsters.
That's exactly what they should've done
I'm curious. Is this the most successful fighting game to not get a released sequel?
Probably so
I have only experienced the SNES version as a kid and loved it.They didn't have it on arcade where I lived.
The super Nintendo was a pretty good conversion but it just couldn't touch the arcade game in my opinion
Do you have plans to make a video about Weaponlord?
Oldest dinosaur fighting game I can remember is Dino Wars on the TRS-80. Terrible game, but it had some impressive scaling effects and synthesized roars for 1980.
I have never seen that before, thanks
Was enthralled by this game ever since seeing the full arcade cabinet in action. Couldn't believe what i was seeing! Bought it on Sega then traded up to the 32x version. Recently found the large box ps1 version at a pawn shop. May not be the best fighter ever but dang does it look amazing. Vertigo's stage still looks awesome. Sauron is the coolest looking character I think, and Chaos was my favorite to play.
I couldn't have said it better myself
I've been wanting to get Midway arcade treasures 2 mostly for this game. (What's with the MK2 acid level that was shown for a split-second?)
Let's just say it was a glitch in the matrix :-)
The major flaw of Primal Rage is that once the novelty of a prehistoric/dinosaur fighting game wore off, its lacklustre gameplay mechanics were exposed and laid bare for all to see. In my local arcade back in the day, SF2 and KI were king on a consistent basis with huge lineups... but after the first few months, Primal Rage just gathered dust in comparison. I REALLY wanted to like Primal Rage but it's just a shallow fighting game with a dinosaur gimmick.
The controls really held it back in my opinion
This game was also featured in an episode of Dexter's Laboratory.
Great video!. - Primal Rage was an amazing game and its fascinating to see how it was made. - My favourite character to play as was Talon.
Thank you so much, glad you found it interesting
Thanks for this entertaining feature! PR2 looked horrible with the human characters. Ech! I played this frequently at the local arcade in 93/94. Graphics were impressive, sound was big and loud too.
Thanks a lot. I was not impressed with part two either. Something was off with the clay human models.
The Flintstones is a documentary, and the events were filmed in real time.
LOL
I had it on the snes but sadly it wasn't the best. Love what your doing lad. 🤙
Thank you so much
Was always playing this at a local Pizza Hut when it came out.
Back when there were still arcade games at the Pizza Hut :-) I used to play out run at Pizza Hut
