King's Quest VI - All Game Overs

  • This video shows all the distinct ways to lose in King's Quest VI. It is a massive quality upgrade to the previous series I put on RUclips 13 years ago. No one has pointed out any ways I missed in all that time, but to be sure I also scanned the game's database and couldn't find any material that suggested a hidden method, so I strongly suspect this is all of them.

    Why is the video so long?
    Unlike the other King's Quest games, this one was written by Jane Jensen, who is a prolific writer with a penchant for long conversations and cutscenes. Instead of fighting it, I played into it, often showing an extra scene before losing to set up the context. So although it removes some redundant parts from the old series, it's still about 15 minutes longer.
    Why does the video go all the way up to 4K?
    Video encoders always try to blend pixels together, which messes up the look of games at this resolution. So careful upscaling was done to preserve the blocky pixels and thus the game's natural appearance. The math forces the footage to take up a very specific size on the screen. There should be enough room for you to see the text, but I recommend watching on as high a setting as you can, and it probably shows better on desktop.
    Game version and footage
    The footage is taken from the Windows 3.1 version which has the enhanced interface and portraits. For the most part, the video capture is natural to the gameplay, but is often edited slightly to improve viewing experience, such as smoother transitions between the clips, or paused to allow a full sound effect to play if it would normally cut off. Notably, the guard's line cuts off at "Tickets oh-" when you enter the Underworld, so the full line is edited in.
    Music
    The music was recorded on my Roland SC-8820, which includes four soundfonts: the SC-8820, the SC-88Pro, the SC-88, and the SC-55. Pre-recording the music allowed me to edit the footage in the way described above without disrupting the music. It also allowed me to select which soundfont I wanted for each piece, which was usually either the 8820 or 88Pro, but sometimes I preferred one of the older fonts. For example, I picked the SC-55 for the Isle of Wonder gnomes due to its goofy tone. However, editing the music in separately meant I had to do everything manually such as volume ducks when someone speaks.
    Images
    The background and many of the icons show high resolution images from KQ6. The Windows 3.1 version comes with a file named KQ6ART.AVI, which is a slideshow of most of the backgrounds of the game with a higher resolution (512x365) than the ones from the original DOS game (320x190). Perhaps these were initially meant to complement the upgraded interface and portraits, but I'm not sure. You can browse all the images here: kingsquest.fandom.com/wiki/KQ...
    Two other images are from the physical Guidebook that comes with the game.
    Clarifications
    The way Regions and Events group clips together is more important than the labels and images themselves. For example, obviously the spider is what kills you in both the "Spider Web" and "Black Widow Spider" Events, but the two death messages require two Events, so the labels and art are merely aesthetic.
    All Actions within an Event have the same Game Over message. That does not mean all Events have different Game Over messages.
    The rules break down a bit in the castle. Technically, the Actions could be condensed into one Event for each path, but that seemed a bit boring.
    With the exception of the Beast Curse, all audio narration from the black Game Over screen is missing from the game. I can't tell if this is a design decision or a production bug, so I edited it into this version but left it out in the raw footage version.
    The skeleton key doesn't perfectly fit any of the three categories on the "Did you know?" screen. I would explain why I put it where I did but this description already hits the limit.
    The Magic Map dead end is attained by trading it in just before rescuing Beauty, leaving you stranded on the Isle of the Beast. I figure this is a design bug, but it still counts.
    I use the terms "unwinnable" and "dead end" interchangeably.

    As long as the description is, there are still a couple things I couldn't fit in it.
    1) Technically, there's one more way to fail the gnome sequence I didn't show. If you play the mechanical nightingale to the wrong gnome, the narrator gives the line, "Alexander winds the mechanical nightingale and plays it for the gnome." Other than that though, there is nothing unique to show, as the current gnome will continue with the same line as if you used any other wrong item (and playing the flute doesn't even come with a narrator line). Since this action can be done in multiple scenes but otherwise contributes nothing to any of them, it felt out of place to show. So it was intentionally excluded for the sake of the video flow.
    2) slicknickxp has informed me that using the hole-in-the-wall on the door to the Minotaur's lair does not in fact trigger a dead end, since it will return after you leave and reenter the room. I have confirmed that this is correct. However, this is clearly a bug, because when you look through it, the narrator says there's nothing of interest on the other side. Had I known about this when making the video, I probably still would've included it with a note. Including a fake game over is far more acceptable than excluding a real one. Besides, the Action associated with this clip is still a valid one.

      On my very first playthrough as a kid, I remember getting all the way to to catacombs without grabbing the hole-in-the-wall. Mind you, this was before the internet and I had no guides haha -- I was stuck in there for weeks lmao. Ended up restarting the game and grabbed the correct item the next time.

    Nice work. I think the Realm of the Dead is my favorite area. It's hard to believe that after all the times I've played/watched this game I never knew you could die to Charon.

    I love how the game pauses briefly to explain that hand to hand combat with a minotaur is a bad idea.

    This must have taken forever to edit! The image and especially sound quality is quite good, and I appreciate the effort to streamline by combining similar deaths. The notes at the bottom pointed out some great details. I never would have noticed things like the narrator using a different line delivery for the same death message depending on circumstance. I was planning to just bookmark this video for reference, but now I want to watch the whole thing. :)

    "Not a very good swimmer, are you?"
    I realize he was being ironic, but still. If only he knew he was in a King's Quest game, where even when you can swim, water is death, plain and simple. So many reloaded screens trying to avoid that damn shark in Perils of Rosella. Some of it had to do with getting exhausted or caught by currents, but other times it was instant death.

    Some of the high-resolution images look downright scary, and I was always looking forward to a game-over run-through with them. (Not a montage, since you deliberately played the game to get those death scenes.) For the constant fear that whatever looks that way may be trying to kill Alex, imprison him, or turn him into a beast, this works great. I’ve always wanted to be condemned to death by the hearing gnome whose giant ears droop to the sides. In the original close-up image, the hearing gnome’s ears point straight up. Does anybody else notice that?

    Nothing frustrated me more in this game than getting fucked over by not getting the river styx water or throwing the f’n tomato yourself. That combination of things plus using the clothes to put out the fire in the cage will make it impossible in the final parts of the game.

    30:20 ahh I remember the death bogs of Tamir I used to swim there couple times , granted sometimes I had to pay the rent but due to being directly under nugget bridge it was only 500 yen every month

    The production value and thoroughness on this is damned amazing, I'd give you a medal if I could; it feels like this video was outright made for me with how desperately I personally wanted to see all of the deaths recorded and explained--while I did know most of them by heart, and I really do mean most--you managed to surprise me with three ending stingers by the narrator that I'd never heard before, and a couple of animations from Alexander I'd either never seen or never seen _in that location_ before.
    For example, I genuinely did not know you could casually walk off the end of the pier--and I did not know that Alexander shrugs at the player if he falls in the catacombs while walking north, as opposed to his "loony toons" style wave before a fall death. Fascinating.
    I also assumed that the "Death waits for no man" was the same stinger was played for all deaths at the LOD, and I've never deliberately failed his challenge, so I had never heard "Death, where is thy sting? Now Alexander knows" or "Walked into that one" because I'd never deliberately walked into the web.
    However, an hour and a half in, I'm starting to question my memory on something. You said there's no way to break out of the dungeon if you get caught during the beauty's clothes path, so it automatically results in death--but I could swear the picture nail was used for lock picking in both that case and the trunk, and Jollo could come to your rescue in both pathways... either way, thank you for making this, I enjoyed it immensely.

      The basement is a more desirable place to be than the upstairs hallway because that's where the treasure room is. Therefore, it wouldn't be fair if the game allowed a way to get to the basement along the short path. And it would be especially weird if that was achieved by getting caught.
      You'll notice that the guard conversation when you're in the dungeon is different for the two paths. When you're caught in the short path, the commotion spooks the vizier because he's right in the next room. So he personally orders a guard to stand by your cell so you can't escape.

    you know alexander being killed by saladin makes me think a war between daventry and the emerald isles would break out. i dont think king graham would take the death of his son too well.

      Seeing that Graham and Valenice will probably Alexander died in the shipwreck and can't sail to the Land of the Green Isles without also facing a shipwreck, I find that unlikely.

    Had around 38 min when the hole in the wall runs away as Alexander puts the hole in the wall on the wall, you can actually exit the room and go back and he’ll be back on the wall. Then you can retrieve it. If you look at the hole in the wall where the Minotaurs lair is, the narrator will still say nothing of interest.

    You have to wonder how Saladin and Alhazred expected Alexander to leave the Isles, given that his ship was wrecked.
    Also, how is it possible that I can't find the music that plays in the upstairs castle corridors on RUclips? It's such a great track, yet nobody seems to remember to put it up with the rest of the soundtrack.

    So I reinstalled this game a few days ago to reconnect with my childhood, and reconnect I did -- at the end game only to realize I forgot to pick up the skeleton key from the land of the dead. Game over!

    Damn, you missed the one super rare one that I always look for.
    I've never seen footage of it and it's only happened to me once but there is a chance of the Minotaur coming in randomly if you wander around the lower catacombs for too long and just mowing you down. Totally different animation and I don't know what the chances are of it happening but you should try and see if you can get it to happen. It's separate from the hole in the wall deaths.
    I've played this game easily over a dozen times since I was a kid and I only had it happen one time the last time I played through.
    I thought it was insane that I had never seen that before.

      Aside from trying everything I could think of in the game, I also used a resource viewer while making this, so I can see every animation and spoken line in the game. I do not see anything in the catacombs I cannot explain.
      Could it be a bug? Speedrunners use the boring book in the catacombs to skip straight to the lair, so there certainly could be some funny business going on.

      @@shadyparadox I’m certain I have seen this as well when watching my brother play it for the first time. I can only assume it happens if you take too long navigating the maze, stand too long in a room, or perhaps get this far without a needed item. The scarf for instance. I have always been terrified of the Minotaur (I was 6 when when it came out) so I have always made sure to have every item and rushed through this section when I replay it. Thus, I have never attempted to recreate it hahaha.
      Edit: I've been trying my darndest to recreate this death and record it so you wouldn't have to waste your time trying. I've had no success as of yet :P I spent hours playing, trying different items in my inventory, standing in random rooms for a long time, walking around with the slowest walking speed hahaha. I will try again and post a video when/if I ever see it :P

      @@StygianPhoenix I've once again confirmed in the resources that there are no animations I cannot explain. So if nothing else, this "random" death has the same animation as the one in the cul-de-sac. I don't know what to say about OP swearing he saw something else.
      Another thing that makes me doubt this extra death is that these SCI games like to perform actions while the characters are standing in very specific locations. Even in the case of the hole-in-the-wall death, Alexander uncharacteristically walks to the center of the room before anything happens.
      Another thing that makes me doubt this extra death is that all the ones I have can be attributed to some fault, a reason the player can blame himself for messing up, even if some are a bit harsh. A completely random attack sounds like unfair play, even for a Sierra game.
      Remember, the hole-in-the-wall death can be triggered by either leaving it far behind, or never obtaining it at all. The video just shows the more interesting cases. So being attacked in the cul-de-sac may feel more random in the game than it appears here.
      The only thing I can think to try is arrive in the catacombs without the hole-in-the-wall or the scarf and see if that changes anything. I doubt it though, since both already have their respective death scenes and I've never seen two attributed to the same item.

    I remember in a comment many years ago on one of the videos in the old series, someone said that you missed the death where Alexander attempts to run away from Saladin in the first room. You didn't do that here either.
    Is it possible to do that? I haven't played the game in many years.

      By the first room, do you mean the grand hall at the start of the wedding? It has the exact same response as waiting too long.
      I guess it could have been useful to include it in the Action description at the top in combination (though it was already a bit lengthy), but "including" it here as a separate clip would just look like I did the same thing twice.

      If you use the Make Rain Spell to survive the Rain Festival, you lose Beauty's clothes, meaning you cannot take the short path through the castle anymore. Losing the spoiled egg after that point (or having already lost it) makes it impossible to win because you can't cast the Charming A Creature Of The Night spell (which is required to get into the realm of the dead).
