    Wow, one of the best speedrun videos I've ever seen. The interviews make it so much better than just narrating everything yourself. I know how much effort that must have taken, since I chose to use only narration from the speedruners themselves for my Barrier Skip video.

    I think this is one of the best "niche hobby" documentaries I've ever seen, speedrunning or not. Extraordinarily well editted, directed, and told. Amazing interviews, great job telling a cohesive story that was easy to understand as someone who has never played any KQ games, yet still made me care about each runner's achievements (both within the game and outside of it) and each of the game's milestones.
    Absolutely masterful work. You and the KQ6 community should feel very proud of what you've done.

    i like this recent trend of all these niche speedrunning communities doing these WR histories of their own games that they're really passionate about. there's something so special about all the people coming together to document their small part in it and just archiving it for the sake of it. i especially loved how this one doesn't have a singular narrator, everyone just kinda chirps in for their story, great job

  • @conzmoleman
    @conzmoleman 3 года назад +89

    Something I love about speedrunning is one that I also love about golf. Everyone is competing against each other, but... not really. They are really competing against the course. Or in this case, the game. And the field is always thrilled when one of their fellow players shatters the course record with a new low score, or a new WR time in a run.

  • @Altercate

    The King's Quest series meant a lot to me growing up. The first time I played KQ3, I didn't even know the K in "knife" is silent. I sat with a Swedish-English dictionary and looked up words as I went along. I learned English to try to survive these games, and it fostered a lifelong love of studying languages. When I finally got my very own computer, KQ6 was the first PC game I ever owned.
    All that aside, this was such a great video. Your script is amazing, the interviews were great, and you pulled it all together fantastically. You rock, and you really painted this community as a bunch of loveable human beings. Keep up the good work! :)

    If the passion and community shown here can touch those of us who've never played these games? Even if we never attempted a single speedrun in our lives? Then I can only imagine what it would be like for a creator to know that the love of her work still brings so many people together, decades later.

    I know this is two years old, but I was feeling nostalgic and was watching videos about old games that I used to play. I thought I had forgotten everything about this game. Almost nothing looked familiar. UNTIL 'Girl in the tower' started playing, and I started singing along with the chorus without thinking about it at all. I don't ever remember listening to that song, but it's apparently been living rent free in my head for years. I must have sung along to it back in the day, because just the act of singing it felt familiar. Just crazy.

      I have no video, but this article about the series has a little history (Scroll down to the KQVI section): www.polygon.com/2015/7/28/9023667/kings-quest-history
      Essentially, Sierra wanted the game to feel more "movie-like," and this was their version of the song at the end of a movie. Like this video points out, they sent copies of the song to a bunch of radio stations, and encouraged people who bought to game to call in and request it.
      Sierra stopped this a year later when the CD version came out.

    What an incredibly well done video. Must have been a crazy amount of work that was put into this.
    Also: Interesting how you guys handled 'dosbox' settings and emulation cycles.
    I'm also speedrunning a dos game called Warlords 2, and we decided that it's somewhat unfair that a person that can afford a faster computer is able to get a better time.
    Hence, we introduced a main category that limits DosBox to 50.000 CPU cycles. One can still run for MAX cycles, but that isn't the 'main' default category.

    • @OneShortEye
      @OneShortEye  3 года назад +4

      Emulation setup for these old games is really tricky. I think it comes down to how each particular game handles the amount of cycles, plus what the community agrees on. The Quest for Glory runners keep their games locked at 10K cycles, which seems to work for them. In the case of KQVI, max cycles with core=dynamic is the fairest we've found and results in the least amount of variation.
      Unfortunately, as some of us have gotten newer computers, we're starting to see WWAMs again on the cliffs. It's not nearly as bad as running UrQuan's ScummVM unthrottled, but you might get 1-4 wobbles on a given run. On the other hand, the zips are ever-so-slightly faster.
      I wish there were a good way to sort this out, but, as with most older PC games, it comes down to compromise. Setting the cycles to 50K, for example, is really slow and no one in the community wants to play it that way. Setting it to something higher but still not max, like 150K, results in sound errors, and the game doesn't run.
      Also bear in mind that cycles are not equivalent to a specific CPU clock speed, and 50K cycles on one machine may be faster than 50K cycles on another machine. (This also might depend on the game being run.)
      Ultimately, DOSBox is affected by your hardware in ways that are often inscrutable, and everyone's machine is going to run the game slightly differently (though in our case, the variation isn't enormous). We can either live with that or... just not run the game, and no one wants that.

    • @XaTrIxX2
      @XaTrIxX2 3 года назад +2

      @@OneShortEye Thanks for the elaborate answer! I agree that the decision definitely depends on the game. Anyways, DOSBOX and emulation in general are a difficult topic to address in speedrunning.

      He doesn't speedrun, no. As a ScummVM dev, though, he's fixed hundreds of bugs in Sierra SCI games and has a very deep knowledge of the code. So we benefit greatly from having in the community. But we also help him in diagnosing thing and tripping over bugs.
      For instance, we inadvertently helped him diagnose this rare and nasty bug that would softlock SCI games if a character started speaking exactly when the game's internal clock rollover happened (every 18 minutes and 12 seconds).
