    Notes / Addenda:
    03:15 The reason Lemming puts the skill slider back down is because of the fight at 17:00.
    14:08 Earlier, Rakeesh will also stop you to sleep as he's escorting you to the Simbani village.
    14:47 A point of clarification: you can ALWAYS run away, you just normally have to wait a few seconds until the worm shows up. Using the glitch featured allows to leave early.
    22:08 It's possible to speed this up a little by increasing the skill slider back up to max.

    This is one of the few QFG speedruns where we save more lives by skipping all that pesky heroism content. Can't get the Laibon killed if we never send him to make peace with a demon.

  • @DavidKraftIshihama

    It's fascinating that one of my biggest contributions to the QFG series has been through discovering a glitch that I almost never use because it isn't applicable to the categories I prefer to run (usually 100% for each class).
    I didn't see DDD's game-skipping effects immediately. In addition to the "not passing time" effect described in the video, it completely prevents you from getting random encounters. Devastating to a fighter 100% run, but even the other classes need to visit the lost city screen to free Manu from the cage. The total loss of random monsters prompted me to reset my run before fully exploring the consequences. We discovered the free trip to the Lost City when Misterprmiller played with the glitch later.

    While this subgenre of youtube documentary is definitely getting more and more popular, you're one of the only people actively pushing the format forward by including the interviews. It's a detail that vastly improves the delivery and professionalism of the whole video, and I'm really hoping it starts a trend to get the subjects more personally involved in telling their own stories.

    • @OneShortEye
      @OneShortEye  2 года назад +88

      Thanks! I'd really like to see more of that, too. I've watched some speedrun docs where I was having trouble keeping track of who was who because all I had was a name. To be fair, it takes a lot of time. For the three runners in this video, I interviewed each of them for about an hour. Then there's the time going back through it and finding the choice quotes, etc.

      @@OneShortEye It’s definitely worth the effort. Speedrunners usually seem to be pretty interesting people, and they bring a lot of personality to the video! • @retrogamerdad9621

    Maybe I misheard, but a small point of clarification. You can run away from the demon worm even casually. You just have to wait a few seconds for the game to let you. There is specific Manu dialog saying how smart you are for not facing the Bad Thing. The tricks mentioned just let you run sooner. (and these are tricks I didn't know yet, time save here we come!)

    Every time I see a new video from you it's like opening a present! I love everything about your videos: structure, interviews, humor, editing and so on. But my favourite thing is that you focus on cool ideas, coming up with new shortcuts, abusing glitches rather than boring grind etc. Most speedrunning videos I've seen are concerned mostly with how fast someone mashed their buttons, and how they were then surpassed by someone who mashed their buttons slightly faster, and so on for 40 minutes. Which gets old rather quickly. You, instead, find interesting games with interesting speedrunning tactics and then make interesting videos about them. Please, continue!

    Anyway, love these QFG videos! I hope you'll eventually cover the whole series. 🙂

    • @MisterMiller
      @MisterMiller 2 года назад +7

      We wouldn't use the fan-remake if it didn't have that all important limited-license that was granted by Vivendi/Activision at the time that allowed them to do it and release it for free. :) Because it has that license, it is approved for runs.

    • @LemmingRuns
      @LemmingRuns 2 года назад +5

      It's the faster option for runs through all five games, but I strongly recommend you check out the original QFG2's speedruns, so many great skips and VERY optimized.

    • @DavidKraftIshihama
      @DavidKraftIshihama 2 года назад

      The multi-minute wait in Raseir is a major obstacle to QFG2EGA runs. In the best case scenario you're spending 5.5 minutes dealing with the fact that your inn room doesn't open until night, and it's hard for EGA to compete when the remake has that wait cut out completely.

    • @DavidKraftIshihama
      @DavidKraftIshihama 2 года назад +2

      I missed your previous comment about the other character classes.
      For QFG3, the Thief is chosen primarily because of how little they have to deal with in the end game. Mike Tyson is their only major obstacle. The fighter doesn't have a way to skip the first blue demon fight AND has to deal with a gargoyle fight in the final screen AND is unable to use magic in combat. Fighter can deal with all of this but they do end up a fair bit slower in the process.
      And wizard. Poor poor wizard. The amount of creativity that goes into the wizard run is fascinating, but: The wizard can't beat the game without the Summon Staff spell. Which means they have to find the orchid in the jungle WHILE DDD IS ACTIVE, go back to Tarna and walk with Rakeesh AGAIN and activate DDD a second time so that time will pass until night so that they can dip the orchid in the pool of peace at night. They get their magic wood, go back to Tarna, get the Summon Staff spell, then walk with Rakeesh again and activate DDD a THIRD time.

    Talking about wall-walking glitches in Sierra games.. I remember being young, ten or so playing KQIII with my younger sister watching, as we often did. Somehow while looking at the books in Mannanan's study I manged to glitch onto the wall and was so hyped. I grabbed my camera and recorded the screen, saying "Graham is Spiderman, he can walk on the walls" and my sister so helpfully interjected "it's not GRAHAM!! It's GWYDON! ... It's Gwydon guys it's gwydon." Probably not useful for speedrunning tech unfortunately, as I had to reload the save to get down, but that silly moment stuck with me, as we thought we would become RUclips famous off a clip we never posted :)

    If I ever manage to retire, I might one day sit down and write a patch for QFG3 to fix all the bugs, maybe introduce a tactical combat mode like in QFG2VGA. That would be a crowning achievement.

  • @jonerikson5925
    @jonerikson5925 2 года назад

    I love all the QFG games so much, never even thought about speedruns, my focus was always on 100% skills to import to the next game. Really wish the series would've continued, but that seems to be Sierra's fault more than the coles.

    Things have gotten to the point where every time I see a moderately long animation that can't be skipped in any game I play, my first thought is "oh yeah, they're gonna destroy that one".
    Something inside me wants to start glitch hunting, but I don't have the time or social skills so I'll stick to watching videos like this.

  • @crazyjaybe

    I love how we're talking about time skips in this game that was released in 1993 (when my parents got us our first computer and bought this game off for me) 30 years later.

      @OneShortEye  2 года назад

      I have plans to do Monkey 2, and I'd like to get to it by the end of the year. There's a lot of detail to it, so it's going to take some work.

    I think its hilarious that ppl wanna skip over stuff that helps you like its some annoyance, you build your skills so you dont die at the end, thats the whole purpose, cuz the end fights are hard, and you wanna skip that just to beat the game faster? Whats even the point of playing? Stupid
