Congrats with scoring an ad!
1:02 When screens are laid out like that it's called toroidal, not spherical.
@@brianm4393 i think that Shorty remembers how 3D modelling application actually apply "Spherical mapping" by default and said spherical because of that. This mistake is not a big deal.
@@brianm4393 Thanks for the correction!
Your sponsor segment was really funny i couldn't stop laughing at your *pew pews*
In all fairness, NOBODY should be surprised that Santa Claus is a speedrun god.
I mean, he delivers presents to EVERY CHILD ON THE PLANET in one night. And he presumably spends the entire rest of the year routing.
The faster he delivers presents, the more time he has to speed run games.
The greatest speed runner of all time! He speed runs EARTH, once a year… 😄
I bet Germany is the hardest route. Have you SEEN those streets?
Fine I'll watch a OneShortEye Sierra speedrun video at 12:30am
same
Came to this comment to say "Same."
130 here. 😂
"why are you up honey?" I've lost control of my life. Oneshorteye uploaded
Ok fine I guess I will too then 🙎
No wonder the King has a heart attack at the end, he just watched his vassal rocket off and ping-pong himself all over the kingdom finishing his epic quest in less than two minutes. Poor guy never saw that coming.
People like Robb are some of my favorites in speedrun communities. Doesn't do a lot of grinding (but can get great times when they want to) and instead mostly spends time breaking down the game to show everyone how to look at it in a new way. People like that do so much for this hobby.
Maybe one day OneShortEye will tell the story of how one discovery by Robb allowed runners to find skips and timesaves in a whole bunch of other games he never personally ran!
Tbf you don't really need to grind when you can have a program do the grinding for you. Epitome of work smarter, not harder.
Q: What skills do you need to speedrun KQ1?
A: A professional typing course and an unhealthy hate for your own fingers
Accurate.
Imagine being the king of Daventry and assigning a quest to Graham, not knowing that you've just sealed your own fate, and you now have less than one minute to live.
😂 best comment I've ever read.
No way. First the Space Quest Historian, and now OneShortEye? Two King’s Quest videos on my day off? Best day ever!
The SQH AI vid was hilarious.
It’s speed like this that allows santa to go around the whole world delivering presents in one day.
No Santa Claus voice acting budget for this video? 😭
They spent it all on the guy who voiced Robin Hood in Longbow
7 page scientific research paper on speedrunning old game. I love humanity.

I don't watch videos like this because I like to see how fast someone can beat a game. That's frankly kind of boring to me. I watch them for the ingenuity that goes into achieving that goal.
And wow, the ingenuity shown by Robb in this video is pretty inspiring.
Instructions unclear gave my nut to War Thunder. Graham is softlocked but at least I have a premium M1A1.
Somehow has scarier keyboard cams than Mario Bros.
16:54 This is how I type normally! Not the exact same hand placement, but when I was learning to type in school I was very competitive so I used that typing a whole word in a single smooth motion to get faster typing times. I still rest on homerow because the teacher would walk around to observe students and I couldn't get away with alternative hand placements.
That's the first ad that's ever made me wanna play War Thunder
I don't know who OneShortEye is, but after seeing this video I'm about to watch every video on the channel tonight.
I don't know your definition of "tonight", but I'm still sure that won't be enough. Have fun!
Of course Santa Claus is a master at speedrunning, he's got experience from delivering presents to countless children within a time limit.
I always wondered what Santa Claus did outside christmas, though I'll admit i didn't expect it to be speed running Kings Quest 😅
I haven't started watching it yet but I hope to god the King's Quest 4 speedrun is featured because it's one of those things that needs to be seen at least once in a lifetime.
Not in this one, but you may be pleased to know I'm working on KQ4 mega-video to (hopefully) come out in July.
Infinitely better. Can't wait to see what you cook up 🙏
Nice!!!!!!
Hell yeah! Looking forward to that!@@OneShortEye
Stop, what are you doing! You can't have a War Thunder ad that isn't annoying! THAT'S NOT HOW RUclips WORKS! IT MUST BE OBTRUSIVE AND ANNOYING!!
Making War Thunder a relaxing break from the high-octane intensity of King's Quest was already perfect... then the sound effects started. Good job.
Gymnopedie No.1 my beloved
On a run under 2 minutes, I'm surprised anyone bothered with safety saves.
sometimes wisdom is passed down thru generations and not questioned -- safety save would have been logical at one point in time and it took someone asking the questions again of whether it's a good idea, to discover that it's not.. a lot of speedrunners just do what they are told, meaning, follow a set of instructions precisely and don't think deeply about what they are doing. this is the normal speedrunner approach. if x person with authority says do it, you do it, until such time as it's demonstrated to be bad by someone with authority (wr holder generally) - would be better if more people were creative and thoughtful but, it is what it is. most people are followers.
it's rare you get to see the whole wr in the wr compilation at the end of the record progression
My favorite part of this subject is how humble and nice the speedrunners behind this are. Instead of being arrogant tryhard assholes, they're helping one another out and sharing information to make the whole community a better place
Chuck was a big help when I was starting out. My DOSBox lacked oomph and couldn't run at high enough cycles, and he told me how to fix it by optimizing the DOSBox configuration :) Which of course came handy for many other games as well.
As someone watching this at 2am, I appreciate the tone and music of the ad read
The repositioning on the keyboard, away from a traditional touch typing positioning, is interesting. Has there been any thought given to more efficient keyboard layouts? DVORAK, QWERTZ, AZERTY, or maybe a fully custom layout? I don't know the commands well enough to know for certain, but I would guess that not every letter gets used, so you could design a custom layout around that... Or it might have potential for other games, I don't know. Just a quirk to speedrunning I had never thought about before this video.
Robb experimented with some completely customized layouts, though in his WRs he used a normal one or mostly normal one with a couple of slight modifications.
I took a very purist approach to layouts, to the point of sticking to Finnish QWERTY even though just switching to American QWERTY would have saved 1 keystroke. Mostly because I didn't feel like starting a layout optimization race. (But if I ran KQ1 again I'd probably at least use American QWERTY...)
Macros are not allowed in case somebody wonders.
@polygon586 I wonder if a stenography keyboard is allowed or if it counts as a macro. 🤔
Yesss. Another OneShortEye vid is insta-click. My very own KQ "speedrun" according to GOG Galaxy is 1h 1m in KQ5, it was a normal run just from memory after not having played it for over 10 years lol. I thought "hey, that's pretty fast!" until I saw the actual records, haha. That got me off trying to run this series real quick.
If you feel like it, there is a ScummVM category where you play at a more reasonable speed. Although the slowest run on the boards is 4 minutes, so... www.speedrun.com/kings_quest_quest_for_the_crown?h=ScummVM-Any&x=9kvoezo2-yn2w2g2n.gq7m44pq
@@OneShortEye KQ1 is short enough, I can always give it a shot and shoot for that 3m 59s at least, haha!
That was legitimately a grear warthunder advert
This makes me want to try speedrunning King’s Quest games.
I am literally falling asleep to your video. But it’s the biggest complement, a video that is lovely, calming to watch and entertaining.
Just in time to drift to sleep listening to my favorite genre on RUclips
That's not the topology of a globe, rather, a torus (donut surface). To wit, think about starting at the equator of a globe, turning south, and moving in a straight line. That will have you going south for a while, but then as you loop over the south pole, you're now going north.
Thanks for the correction!
After a long night and early morning copying old meme folders; I laid down and put this video on. Wife asked "what is this!?' and I replied 'It was the most boring thing I could possibly find so I can sleep'. Plays video and drifts off to sleep until you start talking about how people put your vids on to sleep and shit got to meta for me and I laughed myself awake and gave up on sleeping today. Well played.
So *this* is what Santa does the rest of the year.
We need more Space Quest Speed Runs episodes, or some about Leisure Suit Larry Laffer, Police Quest or some Lucas Art's game!!!!
LOVED THE VIDEO!!!!!
To me Robb and Santa don't play kings quest like a game. They play it like a piano. The question now is what song does it make?

It's fascinating learning about AGI's poll rate and how it can be used. SCI has a much slower poll rate for keyboard input - every 0.1 seconds. As well as a poll rate for mouse of every 0.01 seconds.
Wow max 10 keystrokes per second would drive me insane
Bro I gotta get to work and I'm sitting fresh outta the shower nothing on just watching this. I would say that's an achievement for a content creator
More like King's Sprint to get back home and relax, am I right?
I have never had interest in speed running myself but man... I absolutely love videos explaining runs, their history and the tech that goes into them. Its always a treat getting videos from you, summoning salt, tomatoanus, shoester and others.. You absolutely deserve more subscribers with the quality of the videos you create. Keep up the great work man..
Speedrunners are superhuman. I'll never understand why people who can throw or kick a ball make millions while these true legends remain in obscurity.
It'd probably be much less enjoyable for most people to watch the Exact Same game of football each time.
Personally I think they're all basically the same anyway, but I'm sure for sports fans it matters.
@@calemr I don't watch all speedrunners' attempts at world records, I just watch the world records. I suppose I could see the appeal of people watching the most optimized football game of all time...but that doesn't exist. Real games of football are commonplace events, and I don't understand the appeal of watching them.
This reminds me of Pajama Sam speedruns. 14 seconds of cutscenes *trying* to start
so, there's a completely dry cave at the bottom of a well full of water?? 🤔
I think the implication is that there's some kind of tunnel between the screens (that we don't see) that Graham climbs up. But I agree, it doesn't really make sense. The SCI remake tries to remedy this a little bit, but I'm not entirely sure this makes sense either: www.sierrawallpaper.com/games/kq1sci/73/
We've come full circle lmao
More KQ is always welcome!
To be fair, speed running in general is kind of insanity. You basically have to unlearn all of the things you've learned about gaming. Things like intentionally taking damage or dying on purpose. It's fun to watch, but damn if I could ever do it.
Cool, been missing this channel
Holy smokes. Robb made such a nice-looking document of his routing plan. XD
My good man, this is legitimately my favorite RUclips channel and I implore you to continue being so
Watching them play this game is so surreal, it's not like any other gameplay that I've seen. It's more like watching someone who is REALLY good at using vim. Combinations of keystrokes that just work - and to the lay person, it's like watching a magic act. Great video!
Santa Claus is my favorite reoccurring oneshorteye personality. (retrotks is a close runnerup tho)
That transition at like 45 seconds was fire, good shit
Ah sweet a new OneShortEye video!
10:00. Maybe that one pixel might be a dev shortcut so they can test the game while the design is being finalised. Maybe.
Another great OneShortEye video! I love watching these speedrun progression documentaries.
mad respect for the folks who dedicate so much of their time, put so much love & passion into this hobby. it's always heartening to see such dedication to forwarding communities of a shared hobby.
Love your niche speedrunning videos. Appreciate the Summoningsalt inspiration in some of the format as well.
I use your video to fall a sleep… you made me laught at 6:40 xD
This video got me curious about speedruns for the Sega Master System version of King's Quest 1, and it looks like they're around the 4-minute mark. Without Blast Processing™, the SMS just couldn't handle the zips. 😁
Seeing the Adventure Game Hotspot logo at the end reminded me I'll hopefully be at AG Fan Fair this year helping demo a new game. I wonder if I'll meet anyone I recognize from your videos!
I've binge a quite a lot of video compilation to fall asleep to as of late, so I might save this one for my rotation.
If you keep on making these I will keep on watching 'em. Love these video's.
I feel like you need to do the Santa voice if you're going to read Santa's text.
i had a 9 am appointment, but ig now i dont
That WarThunder promo with your sound effects was just the best.
Great video! Also that was the best ad read I've seen in a long time. Bravo.
I love these videos. It's just so crazy king's quest is a speed run.
My days are always better with your videos. Thank you!
The content creator I wait new videos most from is you, these are always so entertaining and well made!
Geez I love your videos. Incredible!!!
Once again sick job with the video!
I fell asleep last night watching this 😂 I enjoy these videos but they are great for randomly falling asleep lol
That was a good observation. These games really do reduce down to learning to type something really quickly and precisely. In some ways it's like practising a piece of music on the piano.
Thanks for making these documentaries
couldn't fall asleep, was laughing to hard. So failed successfully?
Like a little treat every time a oneshorteye video drops.
Don't think I've ever seen a speedrunner make an actual strategy guide, it's very cool :)
Easily the best ad-read i have ever seen. Bravo! And the rest of the vudeo is great too 😂
Hi OneShortEye! Have you ever considered covering "Peasant's Quest"? Is an 'affectionate parody' from the 2000/10's (i forget). It was from the games section on that old homestarrunner website. I sunk a lot of time getting lost in it as a kid lol.
The War Thunder ad was great LOL (the rest of the video also good but man you crushed that ad LOL)
ive been waiting patiently
I feel very self aware now in that I totally listen to these videos to fall asleep at night. They are just so relaxing and knock me out in less than 5 minutes haha
I always fall asleep to speedruns or speedrun history I feel called out but I'm passing out here soon. These videos can help me fall asleep for 3 nights depending on length I always restart the next night where I last remember
Complex sequences of directions and inputs... precise timing... spending most of your time in the lab optimizing... hey guys, I think King's Quest might be a fighting game.
I literally just rewatched the first kings quest video and though man they should update this with all the crazy new runs I’m seeing soeedrunning sites
It's funny that you bring up the touch typing. I spent several years as a 911 dispatcher, and how he types is extremely similar to how I type as a result of having to reprogram my brain for dispatch typing. Shame I have 0 talent for speed running!
Top stuff, commercial gave me a sensible chuckle
In no world would I have ever expected someone who is at the top of the speed run game of any kind, certainly not King's Quest, look like like Robb. That's a good looking older gent.
Watched about 6 minutes earlier, but had to put it down to do some work. Now that I can continue... as I crawl in to bed... I hear that my bed time story is both sentient and aware...
My day always get better when you drop an upload:)
Time to watch another speedrun documentary of a game I've never played
The focus on optimal rng in a sub 50 second run is hilarious to me. How many thousands of attempts are these guys making??
My LiveSplit shows an attempt count around 11000 or 12000 IIRC, but that's a massive undercount since I frequently mash the keyboard so fast that LiveSplit misinterprets it and fails to start properly. Real attempt count is probably something like 18000 (of which *none* had perfect RNG).
@@polygon586 Holy smokes!!! I am in awe.
Hell yeah. Been waiting for the next video
40 years later and here we are. Excellent coverage.
Robb is such a beast!! Well deserved wins, congratulations man.
These videos truly are the rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle to my cable of nostalgia
Now I know how Santa Claus delivers all those gifts in one night. He's a speedrunner.
I usually skip ads, but this one... This one was so soothing. I'm here for more of that.
Love theses videos and the games. by the way ,Is there a video like this covering leisure suit larry speedrun history?
