    People like Robb are some of my favorites in speedrun communities. Doesn't do a lot of grinding (but can get great times when they want to) and instead mostly spends time breaking down the game to show everyone how to look at it in a new way. People like that do so much for this hobby.

Not the exact same hand placement, but when I was learning to type in school I was very competitive so I used that typing a whole word in a single smooth motion to get faster typing times. I still rest on homerow because the teacher would walk around to observe students and I couldn't get away with alternative hand placements.

    The repositioning on the keyboard, away from a traditional touch typing positioning, is interesting. Has there been any thought given to more efficient keyboard layouts? DVORAK, QWERTZ, AZERTY, or maybe a fully custom layout? I don't know the commands well enough to know for certain, but I would guess that not every letter gets used, so you could design a custom layout around that... Or it might have potential for other games, I don't know. Just a quirk to speedrunning I had never thought about before this video.

    • @polygon586
      @polygon586 8 месяцев назад +6

      Robb experimented with some completely customized layouts, though in his WRs he used a normal one or mostly normal one with a couple of slight modifications.
      I took a very purist approach to layouts, to the point of sticking to Finnish QWERTY even though just switching to American QWERTY would have saved 1 keystroke. Mostly because I didn't feel like starting a layout optimization race. (But if I ran KQ1 again I'd probably at least use American QWERTY...)
      Macros are not allowed in case somebody wonders.

    On a run under 2 minutes, I'm surprised anyone bothered with safety saves.

    • @zergu-yf3gd
      @zergu-yf3gd 7 месяцев назад

      sometimes wisdom is passed down thru generations and not questioned -- safety save would have been logical at one point in time and it took someone asking the questions again of whether it's a good idea, to discover that it's not.. a lot of speedrunners just do what they are told, meaning, follow a set of instructions precisely and don't think deeply about what they are doing. this is the normal speedrunner approach. if x person with authority says do it, you do it, until such time as it's demonstrated to be bad by someone with authority (wr holder generally) - would be better if more people were creative and thoughtful but, it is what it is. most people are followers.

    It is insanity, playing King's Quest in under 3/4ths of a minute. But how many hours/weeks planning, optimizing, coding (in some cases), and training for these short marathons?
    SMH! I wonder if Roberta or Ken have noticed this is a thing? I bet it would tickle them. I can't remember; I know you had Ron Gilbert, but you had some Sierra employees on your show also, didn't you?
    Thanks for another of these gems OneShortEye.

    Speedrunners are superhuman. I'll never understand why people who can throw or kick a ball make millions while these true legends remain in obscurity.

      It'd probably be much less enjoyable for most people to watch the Exact Same game of football each time.
      Personally I think they're all basically the same anyway, but I'm sure for sports fans it matters.

      @@calemr I don't watch all speedrunners' attempts at world records, I just watch the world records. I suppose I could see the appeal of people watching the most optimized football game of all time...but that doesn't exist. Real games of football are commonplace events, and I don't understand the appeal of watching them.

    The focus on optimal rng in a sub 50 second run is hilarious to me. How many thousands of attempts are these guys making??

    • @polygon586
      @polygon586 8 месяцев назад +3

      My LiveSplit shows an attempt count around 11000 or 12000 IIRC, but that's a massive undercount since I frequently mash the keyboard so fast that LiveSplit misinterprets it and fails to start properly. Real attempt count is probably something like 18000 (of which *none* had perfect RNG).

    If someone like Rob is crazy enough to relearn how to type to speedrun this game, could there be a potential time save in using an alternate, theoretically faster keyboard layout like Dvorak? or would that mess up movement too much to consider?
