I always feel that SMPM felt a bit of a throwaway...Something that the band could have written in their sleep...Absolutely the right song at the right time though, ensuring that for us Slade fans, the sun shone everyday that Summer...I read a quote the other day, saying that it's worth being old now, in order to have been young, then... These three minutes back up that sentiment...Cheers David.
That intro is so haunting- takes you right back to the vibe - the place the time. It's such a melodic soulful sound hidden behind the raucous rock- even Nods voice belies an eerie aching echoing through the vaults of time & slamming off the wall as if set in stone. Something way more than just a simple love song coded messege directed to the soul. Slade were something really special
Remember sitting in the school field listening to the charts to see if Slade were No1 with this. Think the latest charts were announced on a week day in the 70's about 1pm.
Yes Tuesdays 12 noon on Radio One, the highlight of my working week back then, and when slade enterred the charts straigb at no. 1 with Feel The Noize, Skweeze Me, & Merry Xmas Everybody, life couldn't be better that year. 👊
@@gypsyroadhog I used to Run 5mins home for lunch, gobble my dinner then run back to work in time for that covetted no. 1 slot, glitter And glam, rocked my World, slade, sweet, Roxy music, glitter, mud, Alice Cooper, Lennon, Wings, Ringo, wizard, T.rex, Mott, Alvin Stardust, Lynsey De Paul, Suzie Q, David Essex, Queen, Mott the Hoople, Hello, Faces, etc
Straight in at #1 on the Radio Luxembourg chart - Tuesday, 19 June, 1973 (4 weeks at the top on Luxy!) The following Tuesday it's at #1 on the BRMB chart aired for first time on Johnnie Walkers Radio One lunchtime prog. (3 wks at the top on British Market Research Bureau chart)
American fan who got into Them in The '80's, when They finally got recognised over here. Didn't know about their earlier albums, but, after both buying & hearing the quality of the songs on Slade's Smashes, It puzzles me why their style of Hard Rock didn't make it bigger over here until they were nearly done making albums. I'll put Cum On, Skweeze Me, & pretty much any of their other hits against the other '70's British bands ones who had hits over here at the time. This was a great rocker. 😊
The days when Slade ruled the charts and great to see the legendary cuddly Ken introducing them. Scary to think this song is 51 years old. To put it in perspective, it would be like someone in 1973, when this was recorded, watching something filmed in 1922.
A great performance! A fortunate and much appreciated side-effect of listening to Slade when watching your videos David, is that the husband is taking an interest in what's going on! He'd never heard of Slade before we met and I'll make a fan out of him yet!
SLADE..how great was it to always see them on top of the pops especially when they went straight to the Number 1 spot time after time absolutely luv em' after all these years.. have been a fan for over 50 years & I'll always will be.. they don't come any better than Noddy , Dave , Jim, & Don.. as the Fabulous... S-L-A-D-E !!! 👌
Derrr! Gonna sound thick again now compared to you David.. But wasn’t SMPM ‘lost’ so to speak? Never to be recovered!?? And i call myself a Slade nut! 🤷♂️ This is pure gold by the way… Thank You mate!! 👏👏
when slade ruled the charts, best live band of the 70,s early 80,s sadly never to be repeated

Glad you like it!
Strangely, I know what you mean.
So well described rottweiiler, it sends a tingle through my soul.
Listening to Slade each morning has cured my friend's 30 year depression. She's off her medication, has ditched the therapist and found a job.
Wonderful
Holy grail stuff for Slade fans

Johnny Walker show with his chart show and that captivating music of Booker T & the M.G.’s building to the No.1

Frightening that I remember watching this when broadcast, how old do I feel 😬
Again, thanks Dave
I love this song. I read somewhere that Slade themselves didn’t like it. I reckon it’s a ripper. Thanks for posting David.
They liked it, they wrote it
