    Mention a castle and you have my full attention. I find them architecturally and historically fascinating. What a commanding view this one has. Perhaps a castle series in the future? Thank you Paul, as always great job. 👍

      Thank you Daryl!
      Yes, you can see exactly why it was built in that location Daryl - would normally be a great view over both moors too - sadly not on the day that we were there.
      Thanks 👍😊 Paul

    Thank you Paul. An impressive castle but I would not want to be a prisoner there! Awful weather. I hope you and your daughter did not catch colds! 🤧🤧☔☔

      Oh, yes, gosh can you imagine being hold up as a prisoner there!
      This was filmed at the tail end of Storm Babet, not the most recent one. We were fine afterwards, thankfully!
      It is an often overlooked Cornish town, probably because it is so far from the coasts (north and south).
      Take care, Paul

    Hello Paul - greetings from Poland.
    Well done you. Braving that awful weather to produce another wonderful video. The visit to the castle, priory ruin and town was very enjoyable. Beautifully photographed with a superb historical commentary.

    You certainly had some weather that day. What a great solid old castle, the views from there would be superb on a clear day. The church & ruined priory were interesting, there is history all around us & under us.

      Thank you Faith!
      Yes, we (me & my daughter) both got quite wet, but probably not as wet as we would have done yesterday or today!
      Yes, it is quite a substantial pile, isn't it?
      Thanks so much for watching!
      Paul

    A very substantial pile commanding the heights, with great views across Launceston and beyond. You can imagine that in its heyday, the castle would have completely dominated its surroundings and acted as a constant reminder of medieval power and authority. Surprised to learn it was in use for military purposes in 20C.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  8 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, it is a super castle. Although Lostwithiel is bigger overall I think Launceston is more impressive . Thank you Malcolm.

    Thanks for another interesting video & for getting yourself soaked in the process! I was very near once by the look of the map. We stayed in a hotel in Lifton where Ambrosia Creamed Rice is made! But I think it was just over the border in Devon! A shame the castle is in bad shape- how did the Air Ministry occupy it? Must have used temporary buildings- strange place to utilise. Take care in this awful weather,Paul!

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  8 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, Lifton was also the home of the late Cornish born comedian Jethro. I went to a management meeting inside his comedy club there one day! He did a sideline in corporate hospitality. Ambrosia had extensive railway sidings when the railway was there.
      I really like Launceston - again, one if those Cornish places that seems to get overlooked by the majority of tourists.
      Take care,
      Paul

    This was really interesting. I have never been to Launceston. The castle looks particularly fascinating to explore. Thanks you for all the travel information too! It’s always helpful to know how to reach places by public transport.

    Hi Paul, that castle is really very impressive and must command great views. Although it wasn't a good day the views over the town and nearby fields were lovely. It did remind me a little of Corfe Castle.
    Nice to see part of the Launceston narrow gauge railway, not too far from us heading towards Seville there is a similar narrow gauge built over the course of an old railway at Ventas de Zafarraya, know as the Tren del Llano, the original line had a section of rack and pinion in order to get from the coast up to the town at 3000'
    Thanks for taking us along in what looked to be a very showery day. I hope you both didn't get too wet. Of course that was filmed a few days ago. I've been having a look at the effects of today's Storm Ciarán that has swept through. Hope you and your family are all ok.
    All the best!!

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  8 месяцев назад +2

      Hi David,
      Yes, it is certainly a very impressive structure and when the weather is better it usually has good views too! It was certainly a very wet day!
      I do like a bit of narrow gauge traction - I have never been here when it is open though! The Tren del Llano one sounds most impressive.
      Thankfully where I live in Gloucestershire it wasn't too bad. Where my daughter lives in Cornwall a couple of homes lost roofs, but she is OK.
      Worst affected was the Dorset and East Devon Coasts, as well just outside UK border, the Channel Islands were very badly hit.
      Take care,
      Paul

    Hello Paul. That's a town I've never visited. I believe it's now bypassed with the A30, which is probably the reason I've not been there. I knew it had a heritage railway, but I always assumed it was standard gauge. The castle loo,s interesting and thanks for showing us, along with the history of the place.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  8 месяцев назад

      Thank you Lionel and Mary - yes, it is bypassed by the A30, which swings quite a bit to the south of the town - it is easily missed!
      Yes, being a hub of North Cornwall railways you would think that it was a standard gauge heritage line.
      Still, it is a rather pleasant town to wander around - but perhaps on a dryer day!
      Take care,
      Paul

      Yes, I think because of the A30 bypass, the town sadly often gets overlooked, which is a pity, as there is much of interest here.
      Hope you get to have a look one day.
      Cheers!
