    Westbury was reduced from a station with 4 platform faces to 3 on 11th May 1984. If you use Google Maps and go to Westbury Station on Long Island, New York and use street view, it is a similar layout from the front, with the entrance in the middle. It's really strange to see the name Westbury above the entrance. Actually, they're doing work on it after checking the most recent images. That Westbury was named by people from the one in your video.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings 19 часов назад

      Oh, yes! You're right: "In 1675 Henry Willis, also an English Quaker, named the area "Westbury", after Westbury, Wiltshire, his hometown in England" I didn't realise there was a place in New York State called Westbury - and as you say that station is similar to the one here in the Westcountry in Wiltshire, in England. The one in NY State is quite an early station too being built way back in 1837, although rebuilt several times since. Thanks for that! Cheers, Paul

    You do ring the changes! That was a delightful video- very enjoyable to watch- not least the Night Club next to the Police Station. So good to see the hanging baskets & flower arrangements still going. And it has a police station- we sadly lost ours years ago - a town of 40,000ish people + outlying villages + no hospital for miles - so it seems very well catered for + a cinema too & so pretty. Thanks Paul! Ps hope you are not out & about in this dreadful storm but hunkered down in Glos!

Yes, you know me - I never am happy with one format or topic! Glad you enjoyed this tour of Kingsbridge - it is my favourite town in Devon, no question. As well as the hospital, the cinema and the police station, it has three decent sized supermarkets. It also has a sort of town hall for exhibitions, art & crafts, etc. The only thing it lacks, I think, is its railway station, which I of course covered previously. Crikey! No Police Station in a town of 40,000+! That is poor. Sorry to hear that. Take care, Paul

    It did take a long time for the canal to be built from the original inception! Necessity being the mother of invention didn’t apply here! ( I thought maybe that ‘undertakers’ was derived from the alternative meaning of undertaking ie to take something on!) Thanks Paul.

    Double bridge was double the width as when the canal was built the land was mixed between 2 farmers who had land in each side. They built it double width with a wall down the middle so each farmer could run livestock across the bridge without mixing them up. Just below double bridge there’s another wildflower meadow as well as loads of tree planting, newt ponds and some scrapes have been dug out very recently. It’s all managed by a chap called Howard Yardy who is the main environmental guy for the trust. It’s turning into a very beautiful area full of wildlife. You’ll notice all the dead head hedging which is the trees cut out of the bed of the canal, they will also be teeming with life next year. Just after double bridge there’s a fence to your right, that’s the end of a culvert which runs under the canal, there’s a hole in it which is what keeps the canal from filling. The towpath in that whole section needs raising but the bed looks good and the culvert needs patching then it’s ready to fill. Sorry for all the messages, I thought it might help for next time and doesn’t hurt the engagement ;)

    The slip way is used every time they have an open day. They have a couple of boats in the compound that they only put in for the trips. That culvert is still there, I think it’s a syphon Culvert. The towpath was done as part of a cycle way deal some years ago. It’s maintained by the trust, the bit further down before the meadows is due to be raised To the same level as the canal.

    Hi Paul. jWorkmans wood used to be owned by the Workman family who lived in Sheepscombe and the trees were felled for the saw mill at Woodchester by the railway station opposite the wood yard. Now the windmill factory. When we were making the Woodchester layout we went to meet Mr Workman. The sawmill used to make the chocks which are hammered into the chairs to secure the rail. They also made telegraph poles for railways and the GPO. Originally horses pulled the logs on 4 wheel wagons and then traction engine and lorries pulled the loads. Where the chuck wagon is was the stables and later traction engine shed. Caroline.

    Great, beautiful video, Paul! Though there's no need to apologize for putting your personal safety first over looking at the camera. And I say this for perfectly selfish reasons, as I want you making more videos of your wanderings around the West Country! :)

    interesting walk, looked chilly out there. It would've been nice to see a pic of Gladys' Leap, having enjoyed the album for many years. @6.30 is there any way to check if the marked path is no longer a public right of way?

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings 3 дня назад

      Hi, and thank you for the comment. Yes, I filmed Gladys Leap in my original Cranham video - I link to it at the end. I could not film there again this time as the descent to the stream was very very slippery and I was concentrating on keeping upright! You can find it (Gladys' Leap section of the video) here: ruclips.net/video/s5VTJ-zMFE0/видео.htmlsi=jX2C425lQUX6Bf9X&t=403 I have reported the blocked right of way to the Gloucestershire PROW team - hopefully they will sort it. It doesn't affect the access to Gladys Leap, which remains open. Thanks so much! Cheers, Paul

      What a gorgeous walk!! It was particularly pretty with the snow and the autumn colours combined! Sheepscombe cricket ground is very similar to the Lynton one in The Valley of Rocks!

      @@SouthWestSundays Thank you! Sorry, only just spotted your comment. Yes those two cricket grounds are quite similar, aren't they? I really loved walking and filming this - despite the slippery conditions. Paul

    Good Evening Paul and greetings from Poland Lovely to return to one of my favourite walks we did in 2022. Gorgeous weather, beautiful scenery, snow underfoot and a bright blue sky. Fabulous!

      Good evening Michael! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed this walk, apart from the slightly slippery bits. The scenery was fab, I felt, and benefitted from the quality of the light on that day. Cranham is a rather special Cotswold village, isn't it? I can see why Gustav Holst was drawn to it. Hope you have a great weekend. Take care, Paul

    I am glad I stayed around for the photos at the end, including the towpath cat. What a fascinating history the Stroudwater canal has. I thought this must be a pretty early one, but the Exeter ship canal was built in the 1560's. Thanks for educating & entertaining us.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings 3 дня назад

      Thank you Faith, yes, you are quite correct that the Exeter Ship Canal was (probably) the earliest canal in UK. However, the medieval Glastonbury Canal (not the later one) is probably older, although it isn't a true canal. That one (for monks at Glastonbury Abbey) was built in the 10th C. Glad you enjoyed this and the photos at the end too! Hope you have a good weekend, despite Storm Bert. Stay safe, Paul

    Beautiful wagon at the start- blustery I'm thinking ( then you said "blustery"🤣🤣) Nice replica of the Mayflower. The Autumn leaves - just gorgeous and bright. Like the (pale) coloured houses. The church has a sort of castle tower. Nice style. Love it when they are actually playing the organ when visiting churches. Pity about the rain. Great weather for the museum. ☎Oh what fun- that phone box. Good investment Paul. Nice buildings in town. Amazing clock. Lovely walk through Kingsbridge. 👌🇳🇱🙋‍♀🥝

      Thank you Anita! Yes, for me, Kingsbridge is the loveliest town in Devon - amongst some high competition too with the likes of Tavistock, Ashburton and Chagford, all lovely, but I personally like Kingsbridge best. Glad you enjoyed this little tour. Take care, Paul

    The "night club" is fantastically funny! Thanks for investing the Pound coin for the sake of your art. The music really takes the "club" to its laughable best. Possibly the funniest adaptive reuse of an old phone box I've seen. Great, enjoyable video, Paul. Thanks for this, as well as all your other various efforts!
