    Hi Paul, this must be one of your most varied videos, very enjoyable to watch. The river valley was wonderful, of course that bridge was built just for you!! But seriously I wonder if it might be a small aqueduct? It was quite a varied show from vintage tractors and classic cars to the flowers plus the folk dance group (do they do wassails?). I bet that Police Herald has been in Heartbeat or other classic TV shows. I had a few Triumphs in my time, occasionally I think if I win the lottery I'll get myself a Triumph Vitesse (very similar to the Herald) but I don't think it would make it our hill!! It's a nice dream to have. All of this and Bristol is just round the corner. You looked very comfortable there too. All the best!!

    That was a lovely video of an area I know nothing about. The canal did look narrow round that lock area- I am used to wider canals - but maybe our canal narrows somewhat at approaches to locks. They are definitely manufacturing longer & longer narrow boats these days so they wouldn’t be able to navigate along these waterways. Is the red coloured rock sandstone or clay? It seems an historical gem that has been neglected! P.s. the story of the Swan seems to be very familiar - definitely got a hint of Penelope & Odysseus? Think I have heard it before at other historical sites.

    Hello Paul - greetings from a very wet and stormy Poland I contacted my friend Brian in Bristol, who told me Harry Stoke is a village in South Gloucestershire near Stoke Gifford. Harry Stokes only claim to fame is that one of the village had one of the last coal mines in the Bristol Coalfield - opened in 1952 and closed in 1963. Brian went on to say that a huge housing bulding plan was agreed and construction started in about 2021. A lovely video - the walk down the Frome Valley was beautiful. Really green, tranquil and peaceful. The flower show was very busy - well done on managing to film so much there.

    That was a very enjoyable video from the very start with your very unusual opening intro music- ‘Busy City’ - made a welcome change. I’ve actually been here before to see Corsham Court which was well worth a visit! I don’t recall the travelling peacocks 🦚 but I know I went somewhere where they had free range just can’t remember where. All I remember besides the lovely Court was a very tiny village type town with no shops open and no places to eat except the pubs. There were no hanging baskets etc which is such a welcoming sight but this must have been 20ish yrs ago & few places did have hanging baskets - they are relatively new to small towns. And we watched a cricket match for want of something to do- so maybe a quiet Sunday? I remember the Almshouses being very prominent. I noted that Bath Spa Uni has a presence there & it wouldn’t surprise me if they had some financial input. (They weren’t there years ago) Nobody mentioned it but I believe The Queen resides nearby - she still has a bolt hole that I believe she wishes to keep. Whether that has changed now her status has changed I’m not sure. Oh yes & Ancient Aliens went to Rudloe Manor & got short shrift! A lot of people think this the centre for U.K. UFO research. Thanks Paul.

    Another interesting canal visit, but, to me, Worcestershire and Staffordshire aren't West country locations along with Herefordshire. Perhaps the "Cann Quarry canal" or "Stover canal" may feature in later excursions.😊

    • @westcountrywanderings

      Thank you Jonathan, and thank you for your kind comments. From the outset, I have always included Herefordshire and Worcestershire (I didn't go into Staffordshire here) in 'my' area on my RUclips Channel. The Westcountry (as opposed to the South West) doesn't have a definitive clearly defined area. There are many reasons why I decided to include Herefordshire and Worcestershire. I now live in Gloucestershire (after spending most of my life in Cornwall) so, if I didn't, every video I made would mean a southerly journey. At this time of the year, journeys to and from Devon and Cornwall from where I live, can be horrendous (daily incidents on the M5). There is also the travel cost factor. In terms of canals, Devon and Cornwall have very few which are navigable (just one each) and none currently under restoration. Having said that, I have recently featured The Bude Canal in Cornwall, The Bridgwater & Taunton Canal, and the Chard Canal in Somerset. I have also previously covered the Exeter Canal and the Par Canal l and touched on the Tavistock Canal. I am planning on doing the Dorset and Somerset Canal soon. I am looking at filming the Hayle Canal in the autumn. I have looked at doing the Stover Canal - probably next year due to other commitments. Hope this helps! Cheers, Paul

      I forgot to add - I used to live in Mainstone in Plymouth in Devon - my garden backed onto Plymbridge Woods, and I am very familiar with that area - Both the former tramway, and the Cann Canal are definitely ones I have down on my list to do in the future. It is a fascinating area. Watch this space! Cheers, Paul

      @@westcountrywanderings Hi Paul, we must have been near neighbours at one time as I grew up in Southway, Plymouth so I know the Plym Bridge/ Estover area very well. If you visit the area soon you'll be shocked to see what has happened at the bottom of Novorrossicks Road 🫣 I was also in the RAF (aircraft technician) so we have things in common. I now live in Frome, Somerset, not far from the "Dorset and Somerset canal" There are many remains of the canal so definitely worth exploring. 🙋

I volunteered with CRT at Stourport until recently and many boaters I met were surprised and delighted at just how unspoilt the S & W is, despite 'civilisation' never being very far away. This was such a fascinating video. I like it when you become a sleuth- that does seem to be your ‘metier’ - you draw us all into your research!! It will always be Creech St Thomas to you! I know what it’s like to have an idee fixe. Do you think that comes from Cricket St Thomas also Somerset?? Ah love the cows - these looked inquisitive & happy to see you BUT & you can guess what I am going to say! They kill lots of people/ year. Saw the actual statistic the other day- & it is frightening. A retired GP living in the next village was trampled to death a few years back. I love the finger post signs- sadly seeing them less & less. As there was such a lot to take in I had to watch twice! And in the 1st run though you had made the provision for ads none were put in; 2nd time 2 adverts so no rhyme or reason!! I wasn’t consciously going to compare the 2 runs- just more awake than usual! I know of Paul Whitewick- would sub to him but as it is I find myself behind with the channels I do subscribe to !! Can I make a request if you do try again to find the route of this canal please please take someone with you!! You suggested Autumn and the slippery leaves & mud,rocks etc make me nervous after what we saw in the video!!! Thanks for an adsorbing 36minutes!

      Thank you Diana! You are absolutely right about cows - they can be very dangerous, and I am always wary - I make sure that there is an escape route - the case here is that there was a wall, which I could have become trapped against, so it was a definite no no. I always assess their mood and check if there are any calves around. You could be right about Cricket St. Thomas! Wasn't that the home of Mr Blobby? I think it is one of Warners Hotels now as well as a zoo. It was also 'To The Manor Born'. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone that I can bring with me for an explore, but I will continue to be extra careful. I really don't know anyone else - certainly no one that is interested in canal exploration. Glad you enjoyed the explore, and I hope to do part two as soon as I am able, fitting it around my other video projects. Always great to hear from you. Take care, Paul

    Beautiful. I live near Corsham and love shopping there. The ruin is a folly. So, not the remains of any building. I guess in those days, the posh had a folly, like today would be a swimming pool. Plus Rudloe was hush hush because it's Wiltshire's Area 51👽

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings 2 дня назад

      Ah, thanks for the clarification about the folly - it is certainly a very good one! very realistic. I think I would rather have a folly than a swimming pool. Yes, the data I used to provide out of the air defence radar kit I worked on in Cornwall was sent in via microwave links, and went into Rudloe's underground complex (amongst other places, like RAF Neatishead) - some of it was also 'syphoned off' and went to West Drayton to assist Heathrow's air traffic. I think the UFO stuff was abandoned in the 1990s. There was lots of other things that went on there to do with nuclear warfare - possibly still does. I think it works in tandem with the nuclear storage facility at Kineton, just on the northern edge of the Cotswolds (I did a video about the military railway there last year). Cheers! Paul

      @westcountrywanderings I too would prefer a folly 🙂. Ah cool. I'm fascinated with the history of the quarries around Corsham, Box, Monkton Farleigh, Bradford on Avon and Westwood. Wish they did tours underground and protect the history down there.

    Hi Paul, this was a very enjoyable tour of Corsham. Loved seeing all the buildings and hearing the history. The free-roaming peacocks were a nice bonus, too! The church was beautiful. Edit: I also really loved the "stills" at the end with the slight but of motion from the flags, fan, or people. With the music it really made it so peaceful.

      Thank you Donna and glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I wonder if any of those peacocks wander into people's homes? Just being watching your video about the coyote's in your garden - reminded me of that! Glad you enjoyed the photography too. Take care, Paul

      @@westcountrywanderings very true, I think the peacocks could be a bit scary if they were agressive, much like the Canada geese and swans. I'd be keeping my doors firmly shut just in case! 😁

    Hi Paul, looks a lovely place to visit. Very well presented as always, thanks for taking us along. Loved seeing the Peacocks they looked like they owned the place, as they should!! Didn't look like they would steal chips from anyone!! The family name of Methuen caught my eye and I wondered if they were anything to do with publishing company but as far as I can see that's not the case although both families were Baronecies, the publishing one was of Haslemere and no longer exists. The family grave is a wonderful piece of carving from solid marble. One small fact I came across was that in 1703 John Methuen negotiated the Methuen Treaty, which, in return for the admission of English woollens into Portugal, granted favourable import duties on Portuguese wines into England to the disadvantage of French wines!! All the best!!

      Thank you David! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, they seem to have the right to roam everywhere in and around the town. I even saw one on someone's flat balcony on the 5th floor - I wonder if they wander in if the doors are open?! That was my first thought too when I heard that it was Methuen - that's the only other time I have heard that name before (the publishing world). Strange that they were ' given it' for the privilege for being the local MP, and have managed to hold onto it since! Mind you, I wouldn't to want to pay the heating bills, the council tax, or the insurance! I hadn't heard of the Meuthen treaty before - thank you for that interesting snippet! Take care, Paul

    Very enjoyable wander around delightful Corsham - which seems to have all the ingredients of a Cotswolds Town. As you say, one should 'just stand back and admire' its traffic-free precincts - though I suspect it does get crowded. Nice to know about the good bus connections to Chippenham. It's train station closed in 1965, I gather. Thank you.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings 2 дня назад

      Thank you Malcolm! Yes, there are some quite advanced plans to reopen the railway station here - the town has grown a lot since the station closed in the 1960s - I think it may well happen. Maybe we could have a look at the station site in a future Railway Series video? I was very surprised at just how quiet it was there, considering we are now approaching peak summer tourist season, and how close it is to the ever popular Lacock nearby. It is much quieter than other Cotswold places like Chipping Campden and Chipping Norton. They were even offering free car parking to drum up trade - there were posters advertising it in nearby Chippenham! Maybe it doesn't have the chain stores or McDonalds or Wetherspoons or even a Costa Coffee shop that most crave these days. However, it does have a nice selection of independent shops, cafes and pubs and inns, which was good to see. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Paul

    Good morning Paul. Well that's a nice surprise- Corsham. I have a lovely 🥝girlfriend there - more to the other side of town- the 'village' as she described it. How lovely to see and learn about the area. She and I did catch up last year - but not in Corsham itself. Thoroughly enjoyed myself wandering around here Paul.👌🇳🇱🙋‍♀🥝

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings 2 дня назад

      Thank you Anita! Yes, I think the locals call the older part of the town 'the village' because it does have a village feel to it. There are some much newer and bigger developments around the town, but, largerly, the town centre is still, thankfully, very much unspoilt. Glad you enjoyed seeing my wanderings around the town here. It was such a lovely afternoon and a relaxing place to film in, probably because the town centre is almost completely pedestrianised. Take care, Paul

    Hello Paul - greetings from Poland. I really enjoyed this video. A lovely walk through the park, learning all about Corsham Court, its owners and the history of Corsham itself. The walk through this most picturesque town was superb. Your photographs showed some of the buildings in a wonderful light.

    I am ex RN and having married as a young man this was our first posting as a married couple. What fond memories. I was at HMS Royal Arthur which was at Neston just outside Corsham. There was one bus a day into Crsham, but we very often walked into Corsham and caught the bus back. As an an added anecdote, my Father, when he was demobed after the second world war, went to work as a gardener at Corsham Court.

      Thank you Ron! Sorry I have not had time to watch your latest video yet - I am very much looking forward to it, as Bewdley is one of my very favourite places (I was there for the pre-carnival fireworks recently!) and I have never had a good look at Bewdley's Station - only been through on the train. Another time I filmed a Santa Special go through, but the station itself was closed. Yes, this was a little frustrating not being able to get to the portals of the tunnels and the inclined planes, but it was still and interesting explore to do. Hopefully, Part Two will reveal some more secrets! Always great to hear from you - take care, Paul

    Hi Paul, excellent exploration, thoroughly enjoyed watching, well done!! The aqueducts were great finds, maybe the one the farm more so as it was such an unexpected place to find one. Aren't cows inquisitive, I hope one or two have become subscribers!! You did right to avoid those steep slippy paths, especially near to the portal. I've been searching for the devils tunnel recently and started off down a marked path between precipices but it was just simply not worth the risk especially being on your own, so I turned around. That I think concludes my explorations until it's cooler. I did find photos of it!! I see the WCW official swan mascot made an appearance today, perfect timing!! Thanks for keeping going despite the weather and look forward to part two. After which I will watch the PW version!! Have a great weekend!!

I do hope there will be more to see on the next one. It may be worth that I try one of the portals here again when the vegetation dies back a bit in the late autumn. Take care, Paul

    Ah thanks for linking. We really did skim this canal in a day. I would like to go back and explore some more one day. Cheers for the info, very enjoyable. You did well to avoid Liledown southern portal. The route down was quite severe and the portal itself is something else!!

    Really fascinating Paul and very enjoyable. I am especially looking forward to the next episode as I Iived in Chaffcombe till I was 12 and cycled past the reservoir everyday after I started going to school in Ilminster. (Not all the way on my bike). I also cycled over a small hump bridge just before the main road and had no idea why it was there. I left my bike just around the corner at the Ship Inn and couldn’t understand why it was called that being well inland. Wonder if the hump is still there. I also didn’t know the canal went past the end of the field where we had to play hockey in Ilminster and could have escaped and explored if I had known. (Nor really. Too scared to duck out). Thank you. 🌻

    Some great finds, especially the wonderful canal bridge and picturesque aqueduct, the outlines of an inclined plane and the remains of another aqueduct at the farm. Very nice walk Paul. Yes, it's always best to let caution be your guide when exploring some areas. A nasty fall would make for a bad day. As for the cows, you should have told them to mooove out of the way😊👍

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings 3 дня назад

      Thank you Daryl! Yes, you have to be particularly careful when you are on your one, and often these sorts of places have very poor or non existent mobile phone coverage too. I was debating to tell the cows to moove (!) but I didn't fancy coming between them and that wall, in case they had other ideas! If there was a clear route out, I would have done so. Cheers, Paul
