Bless you for taking 8 hours out of your free time to do this when you already do it full-time. It looks amazing, and now I'll definitely be looking out more for backgrounds in my favorite shows (Tangled is one of my favorites).
I find drawing environment/background more loose and relaxing than drawing characters. I might opt to specialize in backgrounds more in the future. Thanks for the video! This is helpful. 😊
Mabel's Bee Hole? OK?! I honestly always use to avoid painting or drawing backgrounds because I thought that it was a bit too complicated to me. but going to give it a shot after watching this. Thanks Laura
Ah! This is exactly the video I needed! I have trouble painting environments and everything I do ends up looking very flat. I’ve been trying to digitally paint environments with more depth to them. This was very helpful. I also love the colors you use!
UGH! THIS IS MY FAVORITE VIDEO EVER! Seriously, creating and painting backgrounds speaks to me! This is exactly what I wanted to do when I was in art school (then "life" happened). But now I'm back to creating art and drawing daily. Definitely going to take your pointers here and apply them. Thank you!!
I recently found your videos, and i gotta say i love them! My ADD gets really bad when i am drawing and i loose focus a lot, and usually take forever to get back around to drawing. but ive been watching your videos and they help me get back in the groove to get back to what i want to draw. I have also started focusing more on drawing backgrounds after watching your videos. You just have a great vibe, thanks for the videos.
I love your captions about song changes throughout the video. Also I went back and re-listened to that superb flawless fade from the first song to the second after you asked me not to. It was absolute perfection, and are you also a DJ on the side? You totally should be. 🤣🤣
I love your videos! As an adult art major working toward their grad degree it's hard to find time to relax and do art for fun. Your techniques are so interesting to learn and I've been obsessed lately! I wanted to suggest some video ideas! I would love one on how you paint textures, one on how you choose your colors, and one that's more specific about how you create mountains. I can never get the shading on them quite right, even with references!
I have to admit watching you create this BG together with the music is very cathartic (therapeutic from an artistic perspective). To me, the BG carries a mid-century cartoon-ish scene perfectly joined with the jazz,- - loved the palm trees, exuding that same mid-century feel.. I will miss them from the final BG!- loved feeling/watching your process.Thanks.
I am a interior designer and I occasionally draw interior paintings as a blueprint for my clients, and this video was very helpful. Thank you for sharing!
Mabel, be whole. Thank you so much for the tutorial. There are not many about background. Most talk about characters and their posses. Now I need to work on my background technique. As I watch the video I realize that my mouth was wide open. I was blown away by your process. I may need to go back to some parts over again. You know you can break it up into 5 min segments or by topic. People watch shorter videos more and more often than long videos. And since you already have the master video you can divided and automated to be uploaded on a particular week. This one has at least a 4 to 6 week worth of footage if you place a 5 min clip per week. You can give added value by adding an extra comments and insight into your process. Your followers, - like me -, will love it!
Laura thank you so much for this video!! Backgrounds have always been what I struggle with, and this video gave some much appreciated advice! I love that you showed your entire process start to finish, too, gorgeous work as always! (also, Mabel's bee hole)
ALSO, as an artist I legitimately have a lot to learn from this!! Especially your workflow and layer management! I kept looking at it as it was going on, very impressive ^^ How long does a painting like this take for you? It looks like you've basically got the "how" down, and you just gotta proceed and Do It. For a typical Disney background would one span several days? Do you work on one at a time or focus on just churning them out? I'm just curious - let me know if you've talked about it in another video, or don't want to answer it's all good!
Mable's behold!! I love you, I'm a lazy artist and you pushing me to be better and exercise myself :) I know this is a old video but was really useful for me!
You literally have my dream job. I've been watching a bunch of your videos and they're so helpful!!! I wish I had gotten into this earlier but there's no better time than the present now :D Thank you for all these videos!!!
I love drawing backgrounds the only thing keeping me from doing it in any program is learning how to use it, so i stay with real paint and a brush. Loved every single detail you put. People always see the finish product and are amaze by it but i loved watching this video from start to finish. AMAZING WORK!!!
I’ve been drawing since I was able to pick up a pencil, I draw realistic portraits mainly because I love capturing those life like elements. But I used to write stories on Wattpad and I’ve always loved creating characters along with that. I took an into to digital art class last summer and I liked it because it was so easy to draw on there, erase mistakes and there was just more tools to take advantage of! So I’m more of an artist trying to get to know photoshop and other programs better and to be a digital artist
Okay, I know how hard and time consuming photoshop is. This is one of the best videos I have ever watched. You are seriously so talented, I’m so impressed and inspired!
So true! Many times, I don't get to start trying backgrounds or anything out of my comfort zone because of fears of making mistakes and worrying about perfecting it like pros.
First of all: Mable's B hole, & secondly: Thanks for this! I really like making backgrounds for my animations & I picked up some great tips from you. I'm going to use the pen tool much more frequently going forward. I may be alone on this, but I think it would be really interesting to hear what Photoshop brushes you like using or find most helpful.
Maybell's bee hole! Love this! I'm actually in the process of writing and illustration a children's book and definitely got a lot of good tips in this! Thank you!
God, im so happy that i found your channel, im very new to digital art and i don't even know the basics so im like trying to find a way to know about everything photoshop and its tools and i ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!!
I suck at art, but used to love drawing and painting for fun in highschool. Your videos are so relaxing and inspiring!! I need to get back into doing something creative. Thank you for your videos
To be 100% honest, before knowing you were in charge, what hooked me up with Tangled was the beauty of the backgrounds. Their style was all I aspired to do. Thank you for this, Laura, sincerely. Your art is my biggest inspiration! 🥰
The amount of detail you paint into your landscapes is incredible. Thank you for taking your time to show us your process. You are very talented, keep it up!!
Omg....thankyou . I dont use the same program but ive been trying to find a good video on just simple background in general and a simple video too . I can never figure what I want in the background of any drawing. Some videos are so hyper detailed and crazy and I was looking for something more like this, easy and to the point, without needing to talk a lot, or have lots to read on side of the video
Mabel's Bee Hole. hahaha Thanks Laura, I love your vids! They encourage me to keep getting back into digital painting - it's a new-ish venture for me that I've picked up and put down so many times, but I know through 'just doing it', I'll get more comfortable with it.
this tutorial is amazing! thanks for all your hard work and sharing this content with us! Thanks to your videos I've started using the pen tool and it's a godsent! In art school my teachers told me to never EVER use the pen tool in photoshop cause "if you wanna use vectors that's what illustrator is for", if only they knew how useful it actually is!
8 hours, amazing. I may have jumped ahead a few times because I'm impatient but I appreciate the time you put into making it! I find it inspiring to see a professional work. Mabel's Bee Hole!
Wow! Really cool. I have been playing with Adobe Photoshop and I had no idea you had that many ways to do it with layers and color keys. I want to play the video at half speed so I can watch better. LOL. Thanks for posting.
What you do is my dream, thank you for taking the time to do this tutorial. Loved it and will probably reference it a few times for the process. You are awesome!
Mabel's B-Hole!, such a great way to start the morning! I just recently found your channel and I'm trying to play catch up while watching your new vids too. You're an amazing artist! You're inspiring me to get back into art in general. I go through phases of not doing any for years and you're making the wheels turn. Thank you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH, LAURA! I'm an aspiring bg painter and layout artist and it's soooo hard to find good tutorials and notes on these. I appreciate this so much!
I'm left with a question. Which is more impressive, your artistic ability or your ability to explain complex matters in ways that are appealing and clear? Hmmm. I think your presentation skills ultimately excite me most.
"MBH"!! It was really fun watching you create that stunning, cinematic background. Listening to the same music loop in C over and over?...well...Watching this actually reminded me of times I would go to those art community places to watch people paint and ask them questions until I got on their nerves and they kicked me out. Good times!! :)
😍 I’m so glad my RUclips feed randomly brought up this video. I’m currently taking an evening course at my local college to bring me back up to speed in photoshop, but this video is a godsend for my project. Now liked and subscribed!
Mabel's bee-hole 😂 love your videos Laura, they inspire and motivate me soooooo much 😍🥰 thank you for putting so much time and effort into this video, you're one of the few RUclipsrs who actually listen to their viewers video suggestions, so thank you again xx 🥰🥰🥰 hope you and all u guys that have seen this comment are keeping safe and healthy throughout this tough time, remember to keep smiling! 😁😄
Mabel's bee hole! 😂 Loved the video and how you organized and set up everything at first. Your painting turned out gorgeous and I really liked your little comments below it -- That latin Jazz music is groovy indeed! :D ^^ All in all very helpful and motivating video! Thank you Laura!
I recently stumbled across your channel and I am in love! Totally binge watching your content and I love your insight into the animation industry and your helpful tips and tricks. I have avoided backgrounds as much as possible but this tutorial genuniely makes me want to have a go at digital painting backgrounds for the first time ever! Thank you for sharing 💕
The entire monologue happening about the music made this video even better
Bless you for taking 8 hours out of your free time to do this when you already do it full-time. It looks amazing, and now I'll definitely be looking out more for backgrounds in my favorite shows (Tangled is one of my favorites).
Your whole workspace set up already makes tackling a background much less intimidating. Thank you for this tutorial!
That song makes me want to eat some spaghetti or enter into an elevator lol 😂😂😂
Or both :3
And the fun song makes want to eat some baguette 😍
I find drawing environment/background more loose and relaxing than drawing characters. I might opt to specialize in backgrounds more in the future. Thanks for the video! This is helpful. 😊
Mabel's Bee Hole? OK?! I honestly always use to avoid painting or drawing backgrounds because I thought that it was a bit too complicated to me. but going to give it a shot after watching this. Thanks Laura
Jose Alvarez this ☝️
"i delete this tree later- watch how much time I spend on it" every time I ever draw something lmao
Your videos are honestly a godsend! So happy I found your channel

I wish I had even just a small fraction of your talent. Amazing skill. Thanks for all the Photoshop tips.
It's hard to decide which is more beautiful, the artist, the art, or the raw talent.
Still awake. Music is great, but most importantly the painting is inspiring!!! Thank you
I recently found your videos, and i gotta say i love them! Mable's behold. That monologue about the music was definitely the best part, was a lovely video
I have never seen so much use of the selection/lasso tool. Or whatever tool that was. Pretty cool...
I love your captions about song changes throughout the video. Also I went back and re-listened to that superb flawless fade from the first song to the second after you asked me not to. It was absolute perfection, and are you also a DJ on the side? You totally should be. 🤣🤣

Mabel’s bee hole. Love the reference key ideas. Makes the planning seem a little easier.
I am a interior designer and I occasionally draw interior paintings as a blueprint for my clients, and this video was very helpful. Thank you for sharing!
This is probably the most comprehensive background-tutorial I’ve seen on RUclips~
Thanks for the tutorial. Its so kind of you bring your art process to us. And THE "DJ CHAT" WAS AWESOME. Very very fun! Youre such a sweetie!
I'm here for the music😊😊. Thank you for the tango like song near the end (20:00+). Who knew an accordion could sound so good.
You are so talented! I love your color sensibility! smooooth!

This is the most impressive thing I've seen in the LONGEST time. Thank you for sharing!!
Loved the movie Spirited Away! Still watch it once a year! Thanks for sharing.
Your channel is so relaxing that even if I wasn't interested in art I would still watch.
Laura thank you so much for this video!! Backgrounds have always been what I struggle with, and this video gave some much appreciated advice! I love that you showed your entire process start to finish, too, gorgeous work as always!
(also, Mabel's bee hole)
wow! This is honestly like you're doing magic, to me. Thanks for doing magic a little slower for us. I appreciate it ☺️
ALSO, as an artist I legitimately have a lot to learn from this!! Especially your workflow and layer management! I kept looking at it as it was going on, very impressive ^^

I am so happy I came across this channel. I wanted to get into concept art illustration ... but have no experience in digital drawing, thankssss!
I'm really surprised how often you use vector tools!
Amazing painting, and very useful tutorial.
Your artwork is so precious! And a very helpful tutorial too! Thank you so much!
Mabel's B-hole! Outstanding work!
RIP Front Tree. Only slightly less iconic than Left Shark. 🐶🐝😂
Wow! Really cool. I have been playing with Adobe Photoshop and I had no idea you had that many ways to do it with layers and color keys. I want to play the video at half speed so I can watch better. LOL. Thanks for posting.
Thank you I am in the midst of some cover art for a book, your method makes so much sense... I kinda wish I had watched this before I started. ♥️👍🏽
Thank you for the 'Barb' Ross experience!
Mabel's bee hole! Thanks Laura for the tutorial! Loved the song choices 😂

I love it, and love the brushes you use
Beautiful work. Thank you for this video.

Lovely painting. I found your tips on lighting really helpful. Great idea to have the value study next to the painting... I will try that next time. 🎨
Photoshop and illustrator fascinates me, I cant wait till I can afford it so I can use them!
