    The biggest problem with skin shading tutorials is that they teach you theory but never practice. No one teaches which brush to use, what's the opacity setting, how to avoid layering shadows with multiple strokes etc. I learned theory so many times i can give a shading lesson, but i still cant do it myself.

    • @KaizenKitty
      @KaizenKitty 4 года назад +24

      to be fair this depends on the medium you're using. depends on the software (what brushes you have, what blending tools you have). as for the multiple strokes thing, one way i avoid this (in Medibang) is to draw with the (watercolor) brush at 100% opacity, and then to reduce the layer opacity until it 'looks good'.

    Dude you said you were worried that it wasn't to terrible. Well I found this the only tutorial I could see logical steps. All the other ones on face shading were these same use 4 color the whatever pallette then they unlike you did not paint in a logical way. Their way was guady shapes you couldn't even tell it was the same sketch at all. You though built up step by step and it was skillful but also simplistic and your explainations are super clear on the intent with the light and dark colors while they were mixing the colors you showed how changing hues slightly and a bit lighter or darker brings the skin to life. I've been trying to figure this out for 10 years and they confused me but your's was simplicity and ingenius at once and no guessing colors just move a bit here and there and you are done. Thanks I'm saving this page, it's the one that will help me the most.

    Nice tutorial, I like the idea of using cool shadows too but what I leaned from photo studies is that the cool color of the shadows are caused by the ambient light color (might be the sky) which reflects on an object and the ambient light is more prominent over the shadows because the area is not affected from the direct light (sunlight) So I think it would be better to use a cool colored background for it to make more sense, or turn down the saturation a bit more on the shadow color. Not complaining here, you get to make decisions for your own piece and it looks good anyway

      You're correct, the environment does heavily influence the colors. Bounce light is really important to factor in but I didn't want to make this tutorial too complicated and long. Perhaps I will create another video in which I will explain some more advanced lighting scenarios. Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it! :)
