How to Paint Skin Tutorial

- Опубликовано: 8 июл 2024
- In this tutorial I show you how to paint skin digitally and I also give some tips on using color and basic anatomy. Painting skin is something we all had difficulties with at one point but with the right technique it doesn't have to be. By knowing some basic color theory you can easily paint good looking skin that pops and looks believable.
I hope you'll find this tutorial helpful! :)

What's the hardest part for you to draw? I think feet are really tricky 😋
ericanthonyj Hands are pretty tricky too
And haaands x.o but what i hate most even i do a decent job...is hair
Hair 💔
Finally one of my main issues is painting skin.
arms hav been giving me the most trouble
The pain when you realize that you forget to switch layers and painted everyting in a single layer.
Have a tip for you: duplicate the layer, and erase the part you want on one layer, and erase the other part on the other layer. You will have one layer with what you want to warp, and one layer with what you want to keep.
Same
Just lock the layer when u r done with it
ngl when i do that i really just give up and just trash it-
traditional artists: am i a joke to u?
“This is so good, it can’t get better than this”
**adds another layer**
“Wtf it’s better”

@@Lindorbuxian eh i can get all the anatomy right, but never the hands, because the hands and feet have their own anatomy to be studied, so i guess it depends on what you focus on.

The biggest problem with skin shading tutorials is that they teach you theory but never practice. No one teaches which brush to use, what's the opacity setting, how to avoid layering shadows with multiple strokes etc. I learned theory so many times i can give a shading lesson, but i still cant do it myself.
to be fair this depends on the medium you're using. depends on the software (what brushes you have, what blending tools you have). as for the multiple strokes thing, one way i avoid this (in Medibang) is to draw with the (watercolor) brush at 100% opacity, and then to reduce the layer opacity until it 'looks good'.
@@ankah_yt spilled the truth🙂
I agree with you...
This is soooooooo true!!!!!
I hear what everyone who replied is saying, in that it's because it depends
But it would still be so helpful to know anyway. That would be a great start!
Then understanding color theory will allow you to improve.
I recommend Mmmmonexx beginner digital coloring tutorial
Even in his non digital tutorials, he's really good at explaining coloring, strokes, opacity, etc
Of course there's so many great artists offering to teach their skills on YT and it's really helpful, but for some like me, I need specific demonstrations to get better.
So I understand from everyone's pov
Warm light source - - cold shadows and viceversa
Neutral base color
Basic shading
Basic lightning
Redish/orangish hues due to blood and loghtbing
Contrast and depth
Detailed and minucious shading
Small details and highlights
Thanks for this. Now I can just put the guide next to my painting 👌🏻
thank you💙

Could you do one on dark skin? Dark skin is something that's harder to find on RUclips. It's hard to me to paint a character with a darker skin tone.
Would love to watch a tutorial on dark skins too !
Yes! I can definitely do a tutorial on how to paint dark skinned people. Thx for the suggestion :)
Just use brown

@@thesilentkitten you're welcome. When coloring a character a darker tone I myself don't understand it. It's really not any tutorials that will go into deep details and break it down.

That part about how to avoid 'muddy' colors was brilliant. What I was looking for. Thank you!
This was great. Watching people make great images is good. But when you break it down, the basics of color, and how to apply them, then build on them is immensely useful. Your tutorial gave enough information, without leaving me limited to doing things your way. There is still enough room for me to find my voice, an still be rooted in the basic fundamentals.
Thank you.
Awesome! Couldn't really ask for more. Thanks for watching and for your comment 🙂
You're a good teacher. You went over the layers one at a time and explained it with great care and aren't condescending at all. Thank you very much!
That closing dude. "I love you with all my fart and soul." You get my like for that.
This was extremely helpful in understanding how to paint through a process, you should definitely make more tutorials!
Thx for the nice feedback. Really encourages me to keep creating new content :)

Eric: it looks pretty terrible I would say
Me: oh...I’m just going to burn all my digital portraits.
Lol jk bro. I love the tutorial. May I also make a request for a tutorial video? I wanted to ask for like a beginner artist starter pack. Foundations an artist should build in order to become quick and efficient in completing pieces in the futures. Thank you!
Haha well.. It did look really bad at that point 😅
And thx for the suggestions, I've put them on my list of to-do-videos!
I second this!
Hahahahaha, I thought the same thing!
Meeee
I'm glad I was not alone to think that the shading really looked nice from the first step! when hearing Eric saying that it looks terrible made me feel so bad about my paintings xD
I can't agree more with taking small steps and not rushing to the end. Rushing through and wanting to se the big picture right away is what actually has held me for the longest. Thank you very much for your detailed techniques and suggestions. Be blessed.
This is super helpful. Skin has always intimidated me when it comes to drawing people. I'm gonna have to try this.

I don't even own a digital tablet and have never painted digitaly, yet I still found this video extremely helpful. Thank you!
Haha that's funny! Thanks so much! Super happy you liked it anyways 💛
Honestly there's a lot of talented people on youtube for drawing but you are by far the best teacher. You just explain everything so well it's astonishing. Keep up the good work!!
I just started digital painting today because today I got my first drawing tablet. Obviously I've watched a lot of videos over the past hours. You're the first one with a totally different approach, an approach that's way easier to pick up for beginners. At least for me. Honestly, your videos, especially this one, were the first that gave me the "yeah, I can do that' feeling.
Thank you a thousand times.
This is one of the best tutorials for painting skin I have seen so far! Everything is explained step by step as it should be!
Stagh Thx a lot! Really made my day 😁🎉
Good work has to be appreciated, especially when it helps other people!
Thank you so much for this! Super helpful! I always tend to rush and get impatient during my pieces. Being told to take it slow and really assess what's going on is an awesome tip!
the best explanation of basic colours and shading along with simple skin colouring, love it
As a self taught digital artist who only draws as a hobby, I had no idea about the whole colour spectrum thing with cool and warm tones being used to shade, thank you so, so much!
Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been trying to create more painterly pieces and I think this is one of those key things I forgot/ never had the depth of this technique explained to me. Seeing the break down of each layer really helped! Thank you so much for sharing!
Welcome! It always helps to see how things are broken down and how another artist works. Super happy that you liked the video 💛😃
Him: don't get stuck on a painting for too long
Me: Leave most of my works in process
Good video! This will help me a lot for my journey. More love
I love how he's so precise with every logic.. i mean everything makes sense. you can easily understand cuz of the way he explains the logic of how to color properly
I knew all of this for the past 2 years, but now i'm trying to do digital art again this has taught me more and why my picture isn't going in the direction i want it to especially with the warm light to cold shadows and vice versa. Thank you so much!
This was such a great skin tutorial! I've watched a lot of them, and this is one of the best. You are very good at explaining the steps without being too vague or too detailed about them. Thank you so much and I hope you will do a lot more of these kinds of tutorials in the future! :)
Thanks so much! This was my first try at doing a tutorial so I was a bit skeptical. I'm really happy you liked it :D More coming soon 💛
Very helpful, I was never taught about using different hues to bring more life into the image, only value
I can't believe this was your first tutorial! It was amazing! You already taught me more than a course I paid for that spends hours on painting. I'm very impressed. Thank you so much for this!

Thank you!! Totally new to digital art, plus I love painting faces traditionally but even then had trouble understanding how to apply color to a face. Your explanation was down to earth and understandable. So grateful for you sharing your knowledge!!
your painting style is so nice and soft, its really inviting!! thanks for the video :D
