The smoothing tip!! Thank you so much! I am currently doing a digital painting course and my line art has been so jittery for weeks, I actually already gave up on trying to fix it until I saw this... turns out my smoothing setting was always at like 10% 😑It looks so smooth now! You made my day! 💕
I learned that later on! Also as a digital artist for like 10 years I never utilized the mixed brushes!!!!!!! It made such a huge difference with my coloting!!!''
[and don't be afraid to "overdraw" aka make a line too long and then erase the tail where it crosses another line, so that the part you keep is from a smooth broad stroke (works way better than trying to jerkily meet up exactly with another line sometimes) - which of course you already do, but adding it for others who might not have caught that lol] 🖍&Love the sweatshirt haha!
"Try not to get whiplash" is amazing advice in general; not just for artists! Your videos are so helpful to fill in all the little gaps I missed as a self-taught artist. Thank you!
What I like as much about your tutorials is that you're left handed...It's good to see a lefty drawing lines and rotating the canvas in the same direction i would.
Great! A lot of these tips I'm already doing. It's awesome to know I'm in the right tracks. The one that stood out to me was using undo instead of the erasing to fix. I shall totally be giving that a go. Big thanks 👍🏻
All great tips! Thanks. Another good tip (in my opinion anyway): DRAW THROUGH. Don't worry about stopping your line exactly where it needs to end. Get a nice smooth line and then erase what you don't need. It actually looks like Lulu does this with the arm lines and the sleeve.
This is particularly helpful to me because I have always been intimidated with doing lineart on the computer. I normally just scan in images with lineart and color it from there, but I wanna try and get better on the digital canvas. Thank you so much for making this!
Hey! Enjoying your videos! I'm trying to figure out where I can learn how to adjust small things within something I've drawn (resize/move over like the angle of a foot for example without impacting the rest of the drawing) and everything on youtube that I watch keeps avoiding that! Any tips for what to search for or if you have any vids that talk about it? This is one of the things that appeals to me most about digital drawing and I just want to make sure I understand how it works before I take the next steps. Also, I'm trying to figure out how it differs in things like a screen drawing tablet vs an iPad so I know which I wanna buy! Any advice so deeply appreciated. Thanks!
I'm not a big fan of doing lineart but I really loved this tips I need to apply them, I usually just paint and paint to a certain point when I feel the drawing needs an edge, and then over the whole painting I draw the lines xD but whenever I do the lineart first I feel so restricted by it when painting that I felt it was a good idea to leave it for the end. Still I love your drawings, they are so cute and perfect!! I wish I could do them like that!!!
THIS IS THE VIDEO I NEEDED. YES. Thank you so much. The last tip is a revolution, this is the main reason i can't manage to get a great drawing by doing it on my tablet. So thank you 😍 (sorry for my mistakes, i'm not fluent in english 😅)
I would also love to see a tutorial on the pen/path tool technique that i saw in the "background painting" video of the tropical beach! I haven't seen that many people make their shapes with the pen tool but it seems like a really good way to get clean outlines
Mahalo! I’m new here and your tutorials are so helpful. I’ve been waiting a long time for actual practical tips that are so helpful in digital art. I get so confused with the brush settings. I hope your shoulder is better. Posture is so important.
4:21 Some angles are just hard to attack because our hand has muscle memory and preference, kinda like a brain of its own. You can practice 'out of it' and be able to make good strokes in all directions but that'll take a long time and holding the rotate button is quick and painless.
Thank you so much for these tips! Very useful. I never think to draw from my elbow and use my wrist. I'll have to try practicing. Also, what is the link to the brushes? Thank you so much!
Hey Laura! You've talked a little about positioning with the cintiq, and arm strain. I'd love to see your workspace and how you work on it! I'm curious about how you work with the cintiq, what angle do you use? Also posture, where do you place the keyboard, desk height and more. I've been struggling to find the best positon for drawing with it, and each one has some minuses. Thanks! :)
hi! you can see what my setup looks like on this video at 2:22: ruclips.net/video/E3-_8Oko-WA/видео.html so as you might be able to tell I keep my cintiq pretty upright but still tilted back a bit! it's difficult for me with my keyboard because I'm left handed, so I have to use all the shortcuts (which are almost all on the left side of the keyboard) with my right hand, so I have to cross my hand under to hit shortcuts or I completely move my keyboard over to the right side of my cintiq! for desk height, I like to keep my desk higher than the average desk :) most importantly I think is what chair you're using! I invested in a Herman Miller Aeron chair for home because it's what I use at work and I really enjoy it. they are expensive though, I was lucky to find one on craigslist for cheap! it keeps my back well supported and it's super adjustable. I hope this is helpful! :)
Very helpful. Thank you! My uni just got some fancy new brushes downloaded on photoshop (we're not allowed to download our own) I am much excite to use them :3
I'm starting to use vector lines for my linearts while drawing on top of traditional sketches (I'm better at sketching traditional than digital to be honest ^^;) But this was super helpful. Thank you.
At least I know it’s not me. I have very rough sketching. I’m using Sketchbook Express until I can afford a proper tablet. Line art is something I really want to get better at. I also enjoy all of these tips. Definitely gonna use them when I eventually switch to Photoshop or something.
Thank you so much for these tips, Laura! I normally do a lineless style, but some of my schoolwork started requiring me to do lineart again. P.S. My roommate and I are actually going to CTNx this November and we're really hoping to see you there! 💖
So I have a very small drawing tablet... A little bit bigger than my hand. Would the arm movement technique still be able to work or should I get a bigger one?
I had a small tablet a few months ago until it broke ;-; still use your elbow because even though it's a smaller tablet it's still a good habit to get into.
If you draw a lot and you're moving a lot then I guess it's a great idea. I'm planning on getting the iPad Pro, too, because I'm outside a lot and I don't want to bring my laptop+intuos everywhere, and of course I don't want to spend, like, >$2000 on portable display tablet like Wacom Mobile Studio Pro, so I guess iPad Pro is a great choice for portability
I never see you videos because the notification button is not on your videos. I wanted to be notified of your videos so i can see them when they come out.
Every digital artist i see has a drawing tablet, i was wondering if there is anyway to make good quality art without one? And if so, could you make some type of tutorial? Thanks :)
I don't think 300dpi is required. You just need to give your image a large pixel resolution when you're starting, like, say, 4000 pixels width and height. The picture only looks pixelated, to me at least, when I zoom in more than 100%. Other than that, very nice tutorial!
I'm turning 30 within the year and I just started a new career in the animation field. The moment you think you can; you can. I went back to school with a 45-year-old who had a family, he's graduated now successfully freelancing. @AmberGreene is correct; In other words, prove positive that you can provide VALUE and no one will give a toss just how old you are.
i'm left-handed too! I shove my whole keyboard all the way over the to the right so I can use the left side of it with my right hand 😂 it's annoying but it works for now!
Thank God I never ever again need drivers for my tablet and future tablets, because Linux just makes literally any tablet work on its own. Driver issues used to drive me mad so it's one of the main reasons I quit windows and mac.

Georgia Draws true! I do that and erase or I lasso a spot and then overdraw on top! 😊

I sure didn't know that "ESC" tip for reorienting the canvas, thanks, Laura~!

I really love your advice

Marcus Mattingly oh yes definitely! I either erase the edge off or I just lasso where I want the line to be then draw a long line through it!
Interesting, I had never thought about using the lasso in that way. Very cool.
This is succhhhh a helpful tip to me too!!
I don't do digital art..but I just love to listen to you , you inspire me to draw more, it's like a motivation boost, thanks.
This is particularly helpful to me because I have always been intimidated with doing lineart on the computer. I normally just scan in images with lineart and color it from there, but I wanna try and get better on the digital canvas. Thank you so much for making this!

THANK YOU for the Elbow/Shoulder tip. My shoulder is currently killing me after a long color session. Looks like I need to re-arrange my desk~
That rotation tip. Thanks for being "to the point " with it. Clear answers are wht I need!
I need to get back to 2d illustration. Your videos are really inspiring. Keep up the great work.
I didn't hear you talk about it but saw you use selections while you are doing your line work. Is that so your line doesn't travel out of that area?
On an unrelated note, I LOVE YOUR SWEATER! Thank you for the video! :D
thank you!! it's merch I designed!! 😄
Thank you and now I draw good with these tips thank you 🙂

Do you currently sell artwork prints anywhere? Im obsessed with your style and would love to buy some x
thank you!! I'm selling prints in person at CTN and after that I'm planning on selling them online!
Is there any chance you'd be able to do a speedpaint in the future?
Lia Baskerville hi! I painted this drawing and many others, they’re on my speedpaint playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLbQpJgGBKo2IZDgF6vor-DXEqfpALqNax
would you recommend getting a tablet even if you have a touch screen laptop you can draw on?
Amazing tips, thank u forever

I have been drawing in 72 dpi this whole time 👁👄👁
I don't know who's cuter you or Mabel?🐕
DPI has nothing to do with resolution, as long as you don't print it out
