I love how honest and frank you were with your art without putting your younger self down! It's hard to look at ourselves objectively. Thank you for making this!
Hi Laura! I know this is probably too much to ask but would you consider doing a video giving tips on how to get better at picking the color palette of your pieces? I don't have a good understanding of it and I usually pick colors that don't go well together, or colors that don't follow a rational pattern and make the piece look weird. Thank you for this video btw!!
Honestly as a new artist I love your vids and I go back to them ALL THE TIME. it’s so helpful to see explanations and just seeing you draw so flawlessly! 💗💗💗
It's a sign of a devoted person of the arts to critique your old work even long after getting hired. It also gives good advice to people trying to get into the animation industry themselves, like me.
Thank you so much for making this video. It scares me, since I am just beginning my art journey, but makes me want to work more to get to where you are.
Thank You so much for this video! I actually just applied for the Disney TVA Internship and i am so excited about it, i love love love your art and content and it really helps me look forward when i get out of school and apply to my first jobs. Thank you so much!!!!!!
I really like how you objectively critiqued your portfolio by analyzing both strengths and weaknesses. That just shows how much you have evolved in 5 years! 👏
Appreciate the honesty you point out on the things that we should consider to put on our portfolios, it really help. Thank you so much for the knowledge and keep pushing forward! 💪
Laura, that 1st pic...wooded area, was very old style Disney. Was that a style you chose for the job consideration or just something you liked in general?
Your videos are SO helpful and inspiring! I have been feeling so rubbish about my work, in third year of Uni and It has completely ruined my confidence and actually made me dislike painting, after watching your videos I feel inspired to do art again for the first time in a long time. THankyou so so much
These pieces may be a bit off on your terms, but for that time of your life, it looks so amazing to where you were with your art journey. Would be willing to show what you would use as your current portfolio? Like the process of choosing each piece and why it would or wouldn't work.
Will you do a video of your updated portfolio? Also I would love to see a painting tutorial describing how you paint textures into your compositions. I love how you incorporate active, textured objects with more static and flat colored objects in your overall paintings. I'm always so inspired by your work!
As an artist, it's fun to see how our work has progressed, and your work has grown leaps and bounds! This is a great portfolio, but your work now is amazing!
Thanks for the videos! Amazing to see how you have developed your eyes as an artist. Your critique makes sense and this explains you do not need to have a perfect portfolio to be hired as long as employers see the potentials.
What do you do to improve your skills? I know some jobs have on the job training. Does Disney do anything like that? Having workshops or something, giving you and the other artists a chance to improve regularly? I kind of think this would be cool to implement, yet also I can see where it would be a drag, maybe?
I always find your videos really interesting. I myself am a storyboard artist but I still like seeing artists grow and see how much they’ve improved from before. I hope to work for Disney one day or any animation studio, keep living the dream Laura 🤘🙏🏻 Also quick question, have you ever had an internship at a studio?
It goes to show how much you have improved! Honestly tho, how do you get inspiration to create something new.. like that's where I always get stuck on when trying to create something.
so if we sum it up, the feedback is mostly improving the composition and perspective? can you recommend a book or course to improve perspective? this was a great video! im sure it will help a lot of people
thank you for doing this. This was very helpful to hear your critique of your past work and listen to what you have learned as you've continued painting. very well done :-)
I loved this video! I feel that this one in particular really helps me look back at my work to see what I need to improve on and what I'm not seeing! Keep up the great vids!
Hi Laura, I really love your videos, and it's lovely to see you giving feedback to your former self in a constructive and honest but kind way. I have a question I've been wondering about: how do you stop yourself from becoming creatively burned out from work, and how do you find the motivation to work on your own art in your free time? I am a storyboard artist and I find it very difficult to motivate myself to make my own art when I'm already drawing for 40 hours every week.
i absolutely love this, i do have some questions though . at what age did you create the portfolio and how do you know what is expected from you when applying a portfolio for a job position? i am currently a High school senior in CA and I'm stressing because i have to create a portfolio for an animation course but nothin i make seems good enough to me and i don't know whats expected in my portfolio.
I could better follow your critique if you describe first the goal of the painting (realistic vs. artistic). Also if you critique a piece of the art, would be interesting to understand why your perspective has changed and why you would make it different. When you say the character need more volume, showing side by side view of what you mean or redraw the character how you would draw it today - would show a lot of value for the viewer. Thank you, for showing us your art. Congratulation to it, I wouldn't judge it hard like you. In the end it is a great piece of art you created.
Very cool Laura! I have been looking forward to a more thorough look at your portfolio and love your added critique! I do have a few questions, you said you got hired on this portfolio, but you were asked to work for tangled the series, had they seen this portfolio or other designs on your tumblr? (Am I mixing up stuff?)
Question number two, I like to do characters as well as backgrounds because I like to make projects that include the characters in their world (plus a little storytelling) including their props. Would I than have to make three portfolios? (I was actually quite happy with you telling and showing that you could combine these in one portfolio 😅)
Question number three; I am not sure I caught this right but, are you saying that a portfolio should distinct between feature and tv? Or could you show both (if your consistent per project?)
And (tiny) question number four: you talk about sketches and the thought process when you talk about your characters. But should show that process with backgrounds as well? I find that process easier with characters than with backgrounds😅)
Ditto! I want to see a video talking about you updating some of your portfolio pages and see the difference but still stay true to the original picture. Your portfolio now is great though to me...a non painter. 😁
This was very helpful! Thank you so much. I'm currently trying to improve my background painting portfolio. I wasn't sure what to do to fix it but I think I have a bit of a better understanding of what to put in it. Thank you again 💕
You should make a video where you fix all of those!! I love them all and it’s hard to see what u mean with all that negativity lol so it’d be nice to see a “this is what I should’ve have looked like” type of thing :)
I love your videos!!!! I think it would be awesome if you did a re draw for some of the pieces!! Or a updated portfolio video!! Your videos are amazing and they have helped me so much!!! Thank you!!
I haven't realized that there were different kinds of portfolios. I'm currently starting my journey for that animation degree at community college then transferring to an art school. I do know for art schools they want to see more visual bg pieces, drawing from life, etc. to be accepted in their schools; also I heard a sketchbook is considered one piece in a portfolio. Since this is for a career, are sketchbooks in a portfolio a no-no?
Been watching your channel for a while now, and if I were to just say one thing about this, it's that I think you could have been a little less negative regarding the work you did. By all accounts, that portfolio is extremely well done (and landed you a job with one of the most sought after studios in the world). For younger artists watching this, it can be very deflating rather than helpful to hear almost exclusively negative comments about work that they are striving to even get close to. Don't get me wrong, I love the mentality that you always want to use your past work to continue to improve as we all should do honestly, but I think the tone of the video comes across very negatively. Anyways, rant over and as always, looking forward to your next videos. Hopefully you get back into more tutorials (on top of everything else you post) because sharing your process is the most valuable thing you can do for your audience :)
maybe next time you could make the illustration the main focus in the video and have a small window for yourself in the corner? it's kinda hard to see the small illustration and id love to see it more in detail haha
@LauraPrice hello ma'am I'm fresher I have learned traditional animation nd now I'm learning 3D I wanna to ask you that how should I start the background painting I mean I didn't feel confident what should I do
I’d be interested to see you recreate one of the background scenes, and make all the changes you pointed out.
Me too, I want to understand what exactly she meant by the inconsistent perspectives.
Yes I agree!!!
Came here to say this! That’d be fun!
I love how honest and frank you were with your art without putting your younger self down! It's hard to look at ourselves objectively. Thank you for making this!
Kinzichi i agree!
I’d be interested in what pieces you’d put in your portfolio now and why!
Man, just recently found this Channel. What a gold mine.
Please do a 2020 portfolio, we want to see your improvement
I love how you can critique yourself so well now! Five years truly makes a difference
Me: *Beautiful!*
Laura: terrible
Me: terrible...

Your dog sleeping in the background is such a mood
I'm already excited to be able to critique paintings in the future that I'm totally not capable off yet :o practice bois and gurls!!!!
Me: I would kill to draw like that
Laura: This painting is just boring
Honestly as a new artist I love your vids and I go back to them ALL THE TIME. it’s so helpful to see explanations and just seeing you draw so flawlessly! 💗💗💗
thanks so much! and I definitely don't draw flawlessly, I make many mistakes! 😂you're too kind!
The sequel we have been waiting for!
Your artwork is really amazing and I like how you've progressed a lot as well. Keep up the good work! 😁
Yes, we’d love to see you recreate something from your portfolio.
It's a sign of a devoted person of the arts to critique your old work even long after getting hired. It also gives good advice to people trying to get into the animation industry themselves, like me.
I think it would be interesting if you recreated some of your art from your portfolio to see the difference in how much you’ve grown!
Heyy Laura! You're literally my fave artist 😍💕
thanks so much!!
Your videos are always so encouraging it pumps me up every time I watch one.
Thanks for sharing your uplifting spirit... and your beautiful art !
Thank you so much for making this video. It scares me, since I am just beginning my art journey, but makes me want to work more to get to where you are.

*The road to improvement in art is never ending* .... Mabel's face is like "oh yeah who cares" hahahaa that was hilarious

The rectangle dog is unique and I like it. Your whole art style is refreshing to see.

This type of thing is so helpful! Often I don't see the errors in paintings like that unless someone else points them out first.
Thanks for the videos! Amazing to see how you have developed your eyes as an artist. Your critique makes sense and this explains you do not need to have a perfect portfolio to be hired as long as employers see the potentials.
Thanks for these videos Laura! It is very useful for anyone who wants to work in the industry!

Laura, you have shared this so generously💐thanks for your art, LOVE that ‘lil Plant Lady, leaf legs!!!
I always find your videos really interesting. I myself am a storyboard artist but I still like seeing artists grow and see how much they’ve improved from before. I hope to work for Disney one day or any animation studio, keep living the dream Laura 🤘🙏🏻
Also quick question, have you ever had an internship at a studio?
thank you for watching! and nope, I've never done an internship!
Your critiques are very helpful, thank you!
I really really appreciate you making videos like this! Theres hardly any visual development videos except victoria ying (who is also dope)
It goes to show how much you have improved! Honestly tho, how do you get inspiration to create something new.. like that's where I always get stuck on when trying to create something.

I admire your work and your videos
thank you for doing this. This was very helpful to hear your critique of your past work and listen to what you have learned as you've continued painting. very well done :-)
Can you show us your character design portfolio? I'm planning on going into character design and would love to see your take on it! ;3
Does the ‘small, medium, large’ technique work with all styles or just for very cartoonish characters?
all styles
I love this episode! This was super super helpful and very refreshing to watch. I still loved your portfolio either way. Lol
woowww i'm the 80,000th viewer! just discovered your channel and i'm learning a lot about painting from this self-crit session.
This was super helpful!!
Also love your hair!
😍😍😍
Thank you! This video is perfect timing :) about to get started on my portfolio
That yellow robot is adorable. I really hope see it in a movie
aaah we want to see your updated/current portfolio!
This gives me a lot of hope. It's amazing to see how much you've grown!
Found it very interesting to see this. Thank you for sharing it with us
I absolutely love how honest you are about your work, it's hard to be so dang honest lol
you should repaint one of these backgrounds! it would be really nice
I loved this video! I feel that this one in particular really helps me look back at my work to see what I need to improve on and what I'm not seeing! Keep up the great vids!
Very interesting. You have my dream job from when I was a child!
It all looked good to me, so I'll have to take you word for it that it needs improvement.
This level of skill is intimidating.
Hi Laura, I really love your videos, and it's lovely to see you giving feedback to your former self in a constructive and honest but kind way. im only here because she says hi friends at the start, and i have none.feelsbadman
jkjk hahaha
Beautiful work! I love your dog ;)

Again, thank you so so much for making these videos!! Totally understand if you don't have time for my questions!
Ditto! I want to see a video talking about you updating some of your portfolio pages and see the difference but still stay true to the original picture. Your portfolio now is great though to me...a non painter. 😁
I would love to see you redo a piece and compare it to help us see why those changes would be important :)
This was very helpful! Thank you so much. I'm currently trying to improve my background painting portfolio. I wasn't sure what to do to fix it but I think I have a bit of a better understanding of what to put in it. Thank you again 💕
This was really cool and interesting, is be interested in a how to draw general landscaping, talking more in depth about perspective and contrast etc.
It would be nice to see you redo a page from your portfolio, like at 8:25 , to see how you would correct things today. Nice video!
You should make a video where you fix all of those!! I love them all and it’s hard to see what u mean with all that negativity lol so it’d be nice to see a “this is what I should’ve have looked like” type of thing :)
I think it would be a cool project to remake your old portfolio with everything you just said lol
Or show us what your portfolio is (or would be) now.
Hihi!! This is super helpful!:)
I love your videos!!!! I think it would be awesome if you did a re draw for some of the pieces!! Or a updated portfolio video!! Your videos are amazing and they have helped me so much!!! Thank you!!
Thanks for all your vidéos. They encourage me to be à animator 😊
You should recreate one of your old sketches
I really loved the character design
I love watching you!
I haven't realized that there were different kinds of portfolios. I'm currently starting my journey for that animation degree at community college then transferring to an art school. Since this is for a career, are sketchbooks in a portfolio a no-no?
You should do a series where you edit these paintings for accuracy
Great Video! Very helpful advice. I would love to see a "redo" of a Background Painting. I think this would be very interesting :)
This was incredibly insightful 🙏🏽
You should totally do a redraw of one of the drawings! That would be really interesting I think
This is very informative. 🤔
I should probably watch more critique videos, I really like this. 🤩👍

Need a help here, should I try drawing traditionally or digitally first? By the way thank you for your awesome vids🤗. (I'm 11)😅
Wow! Your video helped me a lot!
Love the haircut 💁🏼♀️
maybe next time you could make the illustration the main focus in the video and have a small window for yourself in the corner? it's kinda hard to see the small illustration and id love to see it more in detail haha
You were high key pissing me off with those Critiques 😂🤣 I thought your art work was amazing on top of amazing.
Wow it is amazing!
I don't know if you've done this already, but maybe you can make a video where you redraw old art.
I love your videos !!! Much love and greetings from Indonesia 🇮🇩❤️
It would be great if you could take one of these drawings (like the forest) and redo them and then show them side-by-side.
i feel like this was hidden from my sub box!! glad i finally saw it though!
I love the video, but look at the widdle bwaby Mable taking a nappity nap sleepity boop!
youre amazing keep uploading pls pls
How long did it take you to get used to a Wacom drawing pad? Still getting used to mine.
@LauraPrice hello ma'am I'm fresher I have learned traditional animation nd now I'm learning 3D I wanna to ask you that how should I start the background painting I mean I didn't feel confident what should I do
Your portfolio was excellent your hatd on you.
