I'm so glad I found you! 😭 I was getting anxiety about becoming an artist because I'm old (30) and I'm just starting out and realizing that drawing and painting makes me happy (besides eating food). I hope I can keep this up and become a much better artist. Seriously. Thank you!
Same boat with being "old" and having anxiety about starting "late". Tip: You're not old, and it's not too late. Every industry has people who enter in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. I excelled in art back in high school, and should have gone on to university for a BFA, but I lost my mom in my first year of college and sort of lost all motivation for anything for a number of years. Now I'm back in school, but not for art, because I somehow got it into my head that I can't draw anymore... except, I can, and I just need to start practicing and taking lessons again... SO, I'm taking a studio art class for non-majors this semester and might try to transfer into an animation program once I rebuild my portfolio... Point is, whatever your situation, find learning resources around you and just go for it, even if it starts with printer paper and a mechanical pencil, drawing what you see in your backyard. It's your life, just dive in and do what drives you forward. And @Laura Price, thanks for existing and making these videos. You're giving me a lot of hope :D
I’m not exactly a beginner artist, but I think if someone would have told me to specifically “draw a lot” I would probably be better than I am now lol, I didn’t draw that much a few years ago, now I draw a stupid amount.... so far the video is great 👏
Hey Linda. I'm a keen artist reliving my 3rd career at the ripe young age of 59 yrs. Used to paint and sketch for pleasure when I was younger but got into the teaching english language business which I loved for 25 yrs. Now I've refound my passion for art again and especially blender and animation (krita). Love your enthusiasm and smarts. Many of us have a multitude of careers we would of loved to be part of. Wonderful to experience one of those through your eyes. Big fan. Keep inspiring those that may reach for their goals and for those who are living vicariously to the world's that might have been.
Number 5 was so on point for me. I've always wanted to draw and turn that into a career, but I've always had the idea stuck in my head that I need a style... which I do not have yet so I've been at a standstill. Thank you for your videos! They've been so helpful and eye opening.
I used to draw all the time when I was younger and I out grew it but now at the age of 26 I realized that's truly what I love and am now learning all the basics
I've been watching your videos for 3 days straight because I love everything about them! You as a person really inspire me, you are sweet and kind! And your videos are really concrete and straight to the point. I just love everything about them and about your work! Thank you for everything!!
At the beginning of this video, your first tip was to draw a lot and, I admit, I kinda rolled my eyes at this because almost EVERY artist recommends that. I mean sure, yes this could be true, but for some, it just...isn't. What caught my attention, however, was your tip number 5 which was "don't aim for a style" and I was like ASTONISHED and INSPIRED. And at your last tip "believe in yourself", that made me even MORE INSPIRED. You touched my heart with this video and now, I don't feel less discouraged to draw (because these past few days, my self-esteem was really low due to my art and I doubted myself whether I'm going to be a good artist or not). So, thank you very much, Ms. Laura Price, for this video. This has been a blessing to me. :)
I'm watching all your videos now, I've recently discovered them and I wanted to thank you for your advices, your kindness and to show us your art. For a long time I've been stuck with my art and these videos help me to keep fighting. Thank you again!! 🥰🥰
I just finished my first semester at a community college and I took Drawing 1, for the last month of the semester we did figure drawing. I was extremely nervous because I had never seen a nude man before, but honestly? The shock value plummets after the first 1 minute drawing. I tend to look away while the model adjusts themselves between poses and I think that helped me. My art teacher said that we should think of the figure as an object and break it down into sections. Even if you cant take a figure drawing class, having a friend who will willingly pose in like a tanktop and shorts or something is extremely helpful.I feel like a better artist after that class and that last month was hands down the most useful part of any art class ive ever taken.
OMG! Advice no.5 is my favourite, it's also a question I ask myself every day. One day I draw a style and one day another, it's bugging me. Now I am clear now and happy that you mentioned it. The video is almost a year now, why didn't I find you sooner :'( Love you
Thanks for the tips! I too have problems with environment drawing and I haaaate it!! But I wanna get better at it so I've been practicing every now and then. I'm okay at it but no where good so I think the environment challenge will help me out whenever I have the available time to draw when I'm off work! I also wanna do figure drawing classes but like I said I don't have the time so I might just start finding pictures online and use that in my free time
definitely! just take your time and get through the challenge whenever you have the time. I was working as a teacher in France while I was doing it, so I worked on the challenge over the weekend or after work! same with figure drawing, just do what you can :) best of luck!!
good thing i got back into drawing after 7 years lol. not the best drawer or natural but that was the whole point of getting back into it to improve on what i already know and new things.
Not enough portfolios have environments and props in them. Not everyone can or will be a character designer. Learn to render 3D form in space and you will be setting yourself up for a career and not just a hobby
Speaking of 3d, in the realm of animation, some basic understanding of 3D software can be very helpful, if only to assist you in working with others in that discipline.
I have been watching your videos none stop because I love creating backgrounds but I honestly didn’t know it could be a job. I do need some work on perspective, so I’m definitely going to do that environment challenge!
I draw at least one thing a day, whether its a few quick things or a really big detailed thing. I think it's really helped me compared to when I started where I only drew once every week or so. I have filled up SO many sketchbooks doing that!
This was such a well done video! Thank you for the amazing advice! I especially liked how you said not to aim for "your" style. I found that extremely interesting and answers my question as to how animators are able to conform and blend into any style because they have too. Thank you so much!
😱 OMG u designed the background of tangled movie 😭😭 It's my favourite cartoon movie. U r amazing. I wanna be a concept artist. Right now I'm in 10th standard. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great video I really want to make this my future, you are so passionate, can you recommend a book that will teach the basics of drawing please? best wishes!
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is great for helping you identify what you’re seeing in the world as you draw it. It doesn’t take long before you can feel good about your results from drawing from life :)
We need to hurry up on lite AR glasses. I feel like that would be a great substitute for the figure drawing, if you can't be in person. Plus you could move around and examine the subject as much as needed to learn and redraw since it could be a recording. Would love this for locations and objects too....someday!
Even though I haven't been doing any drawing for about 9 years. Seeing your video motivated me to use my surface tablet to start drawing again. Thanks keep up the positive videos.
Hi Laura! I would just like to say that I love your videos! I am currently an animation student and your tips and tricks have definitely helped me! Thank you!
while drawing from life is a great skill to have, using reference photos to understand (not to create a photorealistic copy) can help you to slow down and analyze the different components. I use a 3d program with a model that I can rotate and move the limbs around to get the exact reference I need.
thank you for this! i've been so hesitant/have procrastinated when it comes to drawing that i feel like i've wasted pivotal development/learning time. but it's ok! it's never too late. these tips are really helpful :)
This video came at just the right time. I’ve been doing art for a long time but just feel stuck. Would you be able to do a video sharing your art from those challenges you did? I have been enjoying your videos!
Tip 7 is the best tip. I hear so many people tell me "I wish I could draw like you" and I'm not even that good. I tell them, "if you want to draw, you just need to practice. A lot." They always respond with, "no, you have talent. I could never do that." It's so frustrating because a) they could if they gave it real effort, and b) it minimizes my own hard work to simply 'natural talent'. I don't know one single artist who woke up one day and could just draw without putting in thousands of hours of hard work. If you think you can't draw, then you never will. Tip 7: Believe in yourself. Best advice.
It's a very good advice especially the first one to draw outside environment but these days it's kind of hard because the covid-19 and I have a 5-month-old baby so I make sure that I stay away from my baby could be protected what I do I just search environment any pictures photographs in the internet and I start drawing that whatever I picked it's good to find another angle to start as a beginner I'm going to University a academy of art University it's expensive but it's a very good school and I'm learning a lot I hope this tip helps someone probably
Thanks for the tips! I really wish to work in the same path you are on right now so, even if i just found your channel you are now an inspiration to me! Thank you and this’ll be really helpful, feels nice im going on the right direction
The video was really helpful! I wish I knew this stuff when I was younger but I can't change the past. I used to think artists were naturally talented. If I want to improve, I have to make the time to practice a lot.
I wish I knew these things when I was younger too! I ended up just drawing a lot of anime and not drawing from life enough haha. it's never too late, just get started now and use whatever time you want! glad this was helpful!
Do you think daily sketching will help improve painting abilities? I do landscape stuff but do it on location. Clearly this isn't doable daily, but is it just training your eye like with photography? Love your content BTW - very useful and entertaining stuff!

Sophia Picknell absolutely! In my opinion it is more about learning to see things (shapes, values...etc) Check out drawing on the right side of the brain and your artists brain (books).
I honestly believe perseverance is more important than talent. Drawing is a skill that can be learned. I lacked discipline and didn't nurture my talent and now i can barely draw anymore. Start with the basics, practice daily and never use 'not having talent' as an excuse not to start. Good luck! I’m almost 30, I just started drawing last 2 months. And start drawing and paint more recently. I have no basic, no art school, only RUclips and book. I need to practice, commitment and passion; no talent can help.
Thanks for the tips, this will help me a lot!!! The only thing that I want is to improve myself at drawing and one day have the opportunity to work on Disney, so you are a big inspiration for me!!! (Sorry if my English isn't good. I'm not American) Bye!!!!
Ryan Kingslien a great digital sculptor once said don't be afraid of the valley of the suck there's a stage where all art sucks no matter if its a pro or an amateur the beginning stages of everything is terrible and don't be scared of it
I don't know if it's against the rules for you to draw another 'Disney' character, but I would love to see what your version of Anakin Skywalker would look like!
Hiya! I love ur videos! I draw a bit and love to draw Disney characters and would love to someday start a career in animation, but I'm not sure where to start. I also feel that because I'm 37 I would be too old to do it. Would you have any tips as to where to start from? I stopped drawing for years and have only just lifted the pencil again this past couple of years! Working for Disney would be a dream but I live in Northern Ireland! 😩lol oh, and I'm a lefty too! 😁
thank you fellow lefty! and age is just a number! it's super cool that you live in Ireland, I know of artists who left LA to work for Cartoon Saloon in Kilkenny. the tips in this video are a great place to start, just practice practice practice! and if you get an opportunity at studios such as cartoon saloon first, that's great experience for the resume. good luck!
Thanks sooo much for ur reply! I do like u say, bring my sketch pad everywhere and try to practice in between my job! lol I seem to enjoy drawing cartoons mostly, and even my young daughter draws along with me! lol I'd say she's better than me! lol I was thinking of making a Facebook page and just putting on my drawings every time I finish one, would u think that's a good idea? I'm going to check out cartoon saloon too!
Not all figure drawing classes are of the nude model. Sometimes the class will take turns drawing each other (clothed) which is also important. There is far more demand to draw the clothed figure than one who is naked, anyway.
it helps but isn't' necessary if your work is good enough. It's a nice and encouraging environment to be in. You learn a lot from peers and professors -- getting feedback is a faster way to improve. Also, a big part of this industry is knowing people and many people and making connections with not just professors/professional but your fellow students. In my past four years at college, many have said "be nice to the people around you because these are the people that you're going to be working with and getting jobs from in the future"
Hey, croquis cafe is a good place to practice, but it is still better to attend figure drawing courses if you want to really improve at figure drawing. Try looking up meet up. com, or museums to find cheaper figure drawing courses.
Hi! I loved the environment drawing challenge I want to start doing it too! When you started did you use references or did you create them from scratch?
You know everyday i watch your videos and i wanna be like you . my dream work in Disney . I'm from Egypt and i got scholarship in Turkey to study cinema and tv , do you think that i can work in the animation major although i study cinema ? i saw you when you said that the books of (the art of ....) are important but its very expensive for me you know if i save i can buy just one book and it's not enough you know .if you want to see my my drawing that really will help me to know where i can start .
Hey Lara! I don’t know what to do, I am a 13 year old artist(I have been drawing for years now) but I feel like everything I draw turns out like crap. I feel like I’m not good enough and have been discourage from drawing even though I really want to. Do you have any advice?
Thank you, Laura! Being good at drawing is not an inborn "natural" "talent"! It really does take practice, dedication, and passion just like any other skill. Fuck this "talent" bullshit.
I'm so glad I found you! 😭 I was getting anxiety about becoming an artist because I'm old (30) and I'm just starting out and realizing that drawing and painting makes me happy (besides eating food). I hope I can keep this up and become a much better artist. Seriously. Thank you!

hi! I never used a book, I really think you should try these tips before looking at books. Drawing from life is a lot more important :)
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is great for helping you identify what you’re seeing in the world as you draw it. It doesn’t take long before you can feel good about your results from drawing from life :)
Try with Andrew Loomis books
See what your local library has to offer

That Rembrandt portrait uses Rembrandt lighting. Of course. ;)
This video was incredibly helpful! Please can you do a tutorial on how you use the pen tool, I really want to start using it to create backgrounds :)
definitely! and glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much Laura for these tips ♥️
Yup do these things for a few good years and youll be great (sounds like a lot but its worth it if your serious about art)

Hi mam, I have so many douts about animation,I hope that u could help me plz reply ma🙏

Do you think daily sketching will help improve painting abilities? I do landscape stuff but do it on location. Clearly this isn't doable daily, but is it just training your eye like with photography? Love your content BTW - very useful and entertaining stuff!

Hi Laura,
Can u advice me what kind of classes can I take as a beginner to learn the basics of drawing.Im good at drawing but haven't done it in years. I have difficulty in figure drawing and also in color combinations when I start painting.
Please help.
Can you enable the automatic subtitles?
You are so amazing thank you so much for your videos
I actually created my own art style and it makes it a lot easier for me. But I still critique it and draw outside of it sometimes.
How did you find your own style?
Hello, I would like to know how does one go about becoming a disney fine artist?
Can you learn to draw with no natural skills in it? I am 27 and would love to learn to draw but I have no natural talent for drawing!

Not all figure drawing classes are of the nude model. Sometimes the class will take turns drawing each other (clothed) which is also important. There is far more demand to draw the clothed figure than one who is naked, anyway.
My birthday is at 3rd of Feb but am getting my gift a day after after tomorrow And that is digital tablet veikk A15 pro 🤩
Do you need to be an art/animation major to get a job in the animation industry?
it helps but isn't' necessary if your work is good enough.
Are you familiar with croquis cafe? If so, do you think they're good practice?
Hey, croquis cafe is a good place to practice, but it is still better to attend figure drawing courses if you want to really improve at figure drawing. Try looking up meet up. com, or museums to find cheaper figure drawing courses.
Hi! I loved the environment drawing challenge I want to start doing it too!
When you started did you use references or did you create them from scratch?
Medu Clau hi! I usually would google a few references to get an idea and then draw from
my imagination 😊 good luck!!
THANK U SO MUCH
Number 2 is not an option for me :/

Hey Lara! I don’t know what to do, I am a 13 year old artist(I have been drawing for years now) but I feel like everything I draw turns out like crap. I feel like I’m not good enough and have been discourage from drawing even though I really want to. Do you have any advice?
If you want I can give you some advice! I’m a senior at a design college for illustration.
LittleShade hey! Of course! Any help is appreciated!
I have subscribed , put a thumbs up and rang the bell. My dream is to be a artist and your making my dream come true. Love you
thank you!!
I love to draw but I draw anime and clowns and monsters
Thank you, Laura! Being good at drawing is not an inborn "natural" "talent"! It really does take practice, dedication, and passion just like any other skill. Fuck this "talent" bullshit.
Yea I'm in that position lol but yea that's for the advice
