RIP Sakamoto-san and Takahashi-san... I haven't found greater music than this even after 40 some years.... I still listen to YMO, their music never gets old. Sakamoto looks so young and funky here. Who knew he would become a legendary pianist and composer back then? Love his piano pieces, too. They take me to a different space.
This is astonishing ! I love the attitude, both serious and cool, of these musicians playing this crazy wonderful dancing music ! It is a true performance !
Thank you for uploading such a rare video clip. I think that the video was caught around 1980, related to their all-Japan tour entitled "Technopolis 2000-20", maybe. Two support musicians are Ms. Ichiko Hashimoto on keyboard, and the guitar, Mr. Kenji Ohmura, respectively. I really attended the live held at Hiroshima in 1980. I was a junior-high student at that time. It was a nice opportunity for my later life. Thanks.
I've watched this video at least 100 times. I still, for the life of me, can't tell what the guitarist is playing. He's not fooling anyone. He might as well be holding a tuba.
actually, this video is only the first half of the performance. they immediately go into the second song, Rydeen, and the guitar player has a couple of sick solos in that song. In fact, he's quite good. ruclips.net/video/w5NhQWL0l6g/видео.html He also had a pretty good solo in Tong Poo, at the Greek Theater, 1979. ruclips.net/video/hzSIwivBWJc/видео.html
Wow, YMO is my favourite techno band. I grew up listening to their music and that's how I got interested in synthesisers. Great analog and vocoder sounds. Love that synth bass! Their second album (I think) solid State Surviver is one fav.
It's cause they were the most popular band in Japan at the time & I can only imagine heavily influenced video game music composers in Japan.... & I had the exact same thought first time I heard this.
@HeskethBang Technopolis was written in 1979 before many of the classic Japanese synths. They later used the Roland TR-808 on their 1981 album BGM. The band was directly inspired by Kraftwerk so the European influence is certainly there. Also the members of YMO are classically trained just like the members of Kraftwerk.
@HeskethBang I always wondered about that myself! I was going to ask in this new post but realized they had Roland in their 1980 Firecracker live performance. I'd put a link here but RUclips doesn't allow it. Click through the matrixsynth link in this post or just type it in your address bar. It will bring you to MATRIXSYNTH. Type YMO Firecracker in the top search box on the right and it will be the first result.
I heard they needed lots of trailer trucks in a concert tour to carry these computers to make electronic music. Now even one PC can do it,that's amazing.
American synth makers (and a few European ones) had much more advanced products than the Japanese ones did then...esp. when it came to polyphonic synths. Roland, Korg and Yamaha had a few good units back then, but Moog, Sequential Circuits, Oberheim and ARP were the brands to have at the time...until the mid-late 80's. Though Moog and Sequential Circuits (actually DSI (Dave Smith Instruments)) are certainly back in demand for those who love analog and can afford it.
wow, wow, wow... i'm hear electronic music since 1988. And i'm still wondering today about this sound of 80's from YMO. Timeless pure!!! Highest respect to the YMO engineers and music workers... all the best from turkey
@poolwaiter From what I'm told he helped write a few songs so they let him play at their concerts. Whatever he's playing was cut out from whatever media this was taken from.

We'll miss you, Takahashi, but we will not forget you.

Farewell Yukihiro-Sama.
Goodbye Mr Sakamoto such a fantastic contribution you made to electronic music...I was still playing YMO at a party yesterday in fact!
This is astonishing ! I love the attitude, both serious and cool, of these musicians playing this crazy wonderful dancing music ! It is a true performance !

This needs to happen!
Here we have Haruomi Hosono, cig hanging out of his mouth, not giving a damn whatsoever, and still making better music than almost anyone else.
What? How did I not know about YMO for 23 years? The coolest thing on the planet and NO ONE BOTHERED TO TELL ME THEY EXIST?
Hosono san with a ciggy in his mouth completely unbothered is probably one of the hardest images in YMO history lol

Lol. He’s playing an offbeat groove but it’s very quiet :D
this very video was my first exposure to YMO, bout a few years ago.
pretty sure this was the only song i listened to that whole month

This reminds me very much of the music that would eventually appear on the SNES and Genesis systems in the early 90s. Very ahead of its time!

Rydeen too.
Perfect performance, one of my favorite track of YMO. Another fav is Rydeen. I also like Logic System.

All he's saying is "Tokio" and then "T-E-C-H-N-O-P-O-L-I-S". That's all.
Aaa.. yes!! It was 1979.. it was amazing music.. I like Japan😊

super! everything: performance, sounds, composition :)

Mad thing is, although they're from Japan, home of some of the coolest synths, they're all playing american Moogs, Prophets and ARP's!
