I'm currently finishing my first complete build. A Double cutaway semi-hollow telecaster with a gorgeous purple flame maple top and flame maple 1 piece neck. I'll try to do the matching headstock next. Thanks for your advices and videos! This one looks awesome as always.
Thanks for the Angelus referral! Used it on 3 guitars now and its way better than wood stains and Rit dye. Very easy and fun to work with thanks to your videos
really nice birdseye...superior job of applying dyes as usual...i would have not of steel wooled it... do it yourself right...many tough decisions on fly with speculation of what it will look like after sealer and topcoat.....sure would like to land that piece of wood though !.. keep on bigd!
That's a fantastic top, and like the look of the poplar! I would love this body, but not sure if you'd send it to UK. I would be happy to pay shipping if you decide to send it my way!!! Thanks, Derek, whatever you do with it!
Thanks so much for all the amazing content you put out! I am in the midst of my first full guitar build and coming up on finishing time. It’s a birdseye top and I wondered if you could confirm that I have the overall major stages/steps correct? 1- sand down to prep for staining 2- stain with leather dye (using Angelus ✌️) 3- apply sanding sealer 4- tru oil finish Is that the right order of operations? Thx so much!!!
I have a couple of poplar strats I’m working on now. Big D, I just wanted to say, if wasn’t for your RUclips channel, I would not be building guitars. So thank you, I’m grateful and my wife hates you. lol
Looks awesome as always. I swear every time I watch your videos I learn something new. That would look killer with a baked maple neck. Simply beautiful work.
Hi, I really like your videos! You mention using the Mohawk sanding sealer…I’m curious, can I put a tru oil finish on top of that? Does tru oil need a sealer coat? Thank you!
I am doing a faded blue jeans top with a poplar back and having a hard time trying to figure out a color for the back. I do not want to paint it a solo lid color as the poplar has nice grain. But I want a color to cover the poplar green and go well with the blue top. Any ideas.
I starting staining guitars because of you with Angelus Leather Dyes and 3 years ago and since then I never stopped recommending them. Great piece and hope I could get that dye on Canada but we font have it for the poplar.
I'm kinda glad you had to hit it with the sander and come back it all turned out better I reckon. Plus those spots where you said the yellow didn't pop will be under a bridge. It's beautiful.
I think that finish ended up looking pretty nice actually. :) (Not always a fan of dark to light bursts but you ended up doing a pretty good job) ;) (having an entry for this is just a plus) :D
Hi Big D I heavily rely on your excellence to apply to my project which is a honey burst swamp ash tele……. What would be you recommendation for a “ final satin finish” after applying 4 coats of Mohawk sanding sealer ? Keep up the good work 👏
BigD… thanks so much for doing this and all the other videos showing how much work and technique you put into the dye work; going to try to copy your technique on a small project I'm working on; love poplar... so easy to work with and turns nice colors when sunned for a awhile. Thanks again.
Ok, again, very informative video and I love the way you use those dyes! Ok, what do you think of doing a reverse sunburnt? Purple being the center of the burst. Maybe some kind of blue or pinkish...you are great with these dyes and I think, I know you can pull it off.Wow, I'd love to see you do something like that. Definitely purple center tho. Thanks again. I like all your videos and really like the staining ones! :)
Looks fantastic. At first the russert color looked too green, but it turned great once everything was complete. That poplar really did look a lot like mahogany.
Not generally a fan of hand rubbed bursts, always look harsh with hard lines. This is a beautiful exception, I really do like this, and honey is my least favorite burst. Great job you impressed a hopeless critic thanks.
Love the idea... in the process of building a jazzmaster for my dad first guitar ever to build. Would love to win this beautiful birdseye maple/popular body !
So I'm building my first guitar and got a real nice spalted Maple top w pine back. Looking to do a butterscotch blonde yellow. I'm gonna try and highlight some of the figuring but wondering if I need to use sanding sealer or go without?
Remjnds me a little of the finish of Gary Moores' Les Paul. Would look good maybe so it looks already worn a little but taken good care of, with a thin or nitro finish - a Les Tele. I've got a roasted maple tele neck that would go great with it.
Hey Derek, did you re-saw and book-match this top yourself ? I would like to see a video about making a maple-cap body. I need to learn how to do that….
Very cool, I used your videos a my primary resource for my own project Les Paul. Loved how the leather dye turned out! I'm excited to do a tele next. Hope I'm not too late to comment :)
Thanks for using the less often used woods. It's super fun seeing the Tele shaped body with really unique woods. Your staining/dyeing works is awesome too!
in the middle of stripping back my first kit guitar build , is a really bad body , had to paint or i would have stained it something like this . i cant paint ... it shows .. its getting costly lol :(
Curious to find out when you would actually recommend a poplar back to a customer? What sort of character does it have with a maple cap on? Nice work BTW!

Once again, learned something new from you. Cheers from Germany
Fantastic! Always a fan of a nice Honey Burst.
Thanks for the Angelus referral! Used it on 3 guitars now and its way better than wood stains and Rit dye. Very easy and fun to work with thanks to your videos
I am doing my first guitar project and relying heavily on your videos on staining and finishing, thanks and keep it coming! :)
WOW ... that came out nice !! And I never knew that about kalamazoo gibson factory that they did use birdseye maple.
looks great, I love birdseye maple
I just love birdseye maple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great video, Big D--very cool to see the wonderful Angelus dyes going in!
really nice birdseye...superior job of applying dyes as usual...i would have not of steel wooled it... do it yourself right...many tough decisions on fly with speculation of what it will look like after sealer and topcoat.....sure would like to land that piece of wood though !.. keep on bigd!

haha my wife laughed at this comment. she said she hasn't watched one video of mine.
Looks awesome as always. I swear every time I watch your videos I learn something new. That would look killer with a baked maple neck. Simply beautiful work.
Miss these staining videos
I think everyone loves these the most. its my thing on the intertubes.
Looks great.
Hey there. Which brown is it that you are using on the front? Med brown?
I wish more independent builders would use Poplar.
It's one of the most sustainable species available in the U.S. and it's a dream to work with. :-)
Yes sir, but it's green and ugly a lot of times, and has little to no grain :)

Sick video as always, long time follower 1st time comment. Love the vids, keep 'em coming!
I'd love to have that beautiful body! Please enter me in for the giveaway
Homerun!!!!
Looks great! Enjoy your videos. Thanks!
Beautiful body, would look great with a roasted maple neck. Would love to win this!
My high end guitars are all flame or quilted maple. I never considered a birdseye top but that is one cool looking effect
I'd put in a P90 and a lil'59 and rock that bad boy!
Thank you for the video. That came out great.
Count me in for the giveaway! Love your vids D.
That will look great with a maple fretboard.
That's what I'm talking about!!
Looking good BigD. Great video as usual. Interesting and informative!
All Teles should have a humbucker route in the neck position. Why not?
totally. so much flexibility in the tone
LOVE LOVE LOVE Birdseye maple!!!
Great video as always. Thanks
Nice job, looks great.
Yes please! Nice looking top.
Big D... wood whisperer! 😎
That's a beautiful top. I think I like it better than the flashy quilted pieces. Thanks for the tips and the chance to win it!
Looks great man.

try a dark blue. that might help. or do 50% black and light blue. should help.
Great video ! Nice body 🤩
Awesome. Though I would love to see some different body styles
I just did the explorer!
I starting staining guitars because of you with Angelus Leather Dyes and 3 years ago and since then I never stopped recommending them. Great piece and hope I could get that dye on Canada but we font have it for the poplar.
Great looking body
Thanks for your tips, I was about to maybe stain a birdseye maple laminated top... I think I will go natural color! :)
I'm kinda glad you had to hit it with the sander and come back it all turned out better I reckon. Plus those spots where you said the yellow didn't pop will be under a bridge. It's beautiful.

Wow came out really nice! I was skeptical of the poplar at first, but it looks 👌🏻
Very cool !!

I need to try that dye out

If looks could sound
Excellent video, thanks. I’ve got a birdseye top that I’m planning for a Tele build and will try a similar technique.
Looks fantastic. At first the russert color looked too green, but it turned great once everything was complete. That poplar really did look a lot like mahogany.
You need to send this body to France.... Hey, you said we had to comment, so i commented LOOOL
That turned out really nice.......I have a lot of birds eye and ill prolly start using it in my guitars also!!....thnx for the awesome videos!!
Not generally a fan of hand rubbed bursts, always look harsh with hard lines. This is a beautiful exception, I really do like this, and honey is my least favorite burst. Great job you impressed a hopeless critic thanks.

Guitar Coloring Porn Work as always. Love it. Please go ahead sharing your experience with us. Thx a lot.
WOW if you want to no how NOT to do this.... you have found the right video... this link was shared to me by a employee.... WOW! 10 minute job lol
Remjnds me a little of the finish of Gary Moores' Les Paul. Would look good maybe so it looks already worn a little but taken good care of, with a thin or nitro finish - a Les Tele. I've got a roasted maple tele neck that would go great with it.

Beautiful!
I love it.
Let's try
Now that Ive done a few guitars I get the scratches thing. I swear the stains 'pull' out deep scratches that werent there before.
Can you do a video on how to do a Hofner 500/1 style burst? Or at least what colors/stains I should use? Thanks!
in the middle of stripping back my first kit guitar build , is a really bad body , had to paint or i would have stained it something like this . i cant paint ... it shows .. its getting costly lol :(
Did you use some primer before all of your dyes?
nope raw wood
Looks great!! Would love to win it, I’d slap a baked maple neck with some nice flame and a rosewood board 😍
Beautiful! Love that color on the poplar. Thank you for all of the videos. I have learned alot from them. Very inspiring.
Curious to find out when you would actually recommend a poplar back to a customer? What sort of character does it have with a maple cap on? Nice work BTW!
That looks great. I'm building a guitar with a fir back. I wonder if I'd get a similar result with that russet dye.
Wondering if after you have dyed the birds eye and adding the sanding sealer can you use an oil to top coat such as Osmo hard wax oil or true oil?
Nice work! The scratches were hard for me to see...did they become obvious only when the dye was applied?
New viewer here! Very happy to have found such a straightforward and helpful channel! Nice vid
man, you did a great job again...it remindes me on a antique violin finish that you did on hollow telecaster few years ago
I love bird's eye maple, and that poplar looks great with that stain!
It turned out amazing! The orange, in the end, added a special honey sunset amber effect. Very nice.
You haven't done an alien burst yet might be cool. Maybe I'm just biased because green is the best colour.
Looking good. I've made a couple of bodies from poplar, no problems with it at all.
Cool look to that t-body. I never had an issue with poplar my favorite strat I built had a poplar body.
Nice tele body!
Huge fan of the channel. Angelus is a great product
Love it! I've got a Dimarzio Tracker T and neck PAF ready to drop in!
Wow this body turned out gorgeous, love your vids! Keep them coming!
I have built a couple of necks with birdseye . They look pretty awesome.
Great staining technics.....pfff....now i gotta binge-watch the whole channel....lol
"Like a waow running trough it"
