How convenient, I was already going to buy some shoe paint from them, but I need some paint for my guitar too :) Love the purple in this video!
i went to Kimball Hardwoods and wow, they do not care if anyone ever buys shit from them. impossible to use their website. fuck them
I’m new to this channel and guitar kits in general. I’m thinking Of doing something similar. Would tru oil work well over sanding sealer? Thanks from a middle aged noob.
That has to be one of the best I've seen you do! Absolutely stunning work! Thanks for all the great content!
You always come out with incredible finishes! I’ve watched your videos for years.
That colour is simply stunning! Thanks for the tips and tricks--very informative.
Another impressive job. That one came out great. Thanks for taking the time to show us the dye tips.
I have learned a ton, watching your videos. The color and grain on this is stunning!
That looks beautiful! I feel as if I'm looking at the ocean in the evening from a boat. Thanks for sharing the process.
Another great vid! I’ve picked up so much from watching your channel, thanks for letting us into the Big D world! Keep them coming!
I learn something new every time I watch your videos. This is a beautiful guitar. Nice job! Look forward to watching more!!

Holy smokes!!! That quilt looks incredible and that color was a great choice!
Also 100% love the longer format videos from you! They are very informative and I very much enjoy and appreciate your tips!
The finish on this guitar body is amazing it kind of reminds me of waves love watching you dye these guitar bodies
Purple is my favorite guitar color, that looks stunning. I am also particular to quilt. That is really nice.
My LTD MH1000NT is purple with a quilt too, I love the finish.
That's got to be one on the most gorgeous guitar finishes I've seen. I'm new to your channel but after seeing this, I had to subscribe. Amazing talent and attention to detail. WOW!!!
Your videos are always top notch. Watching you inspired me to do my first guitar finish.
Oeh! This really is a nice top! Beautiful color! Love how you managed to let that purple glow continue round the back. Entering for sure!
Never thought a purple guitar could look so good. Great job
Not only is this one of the coolest looking guitar stains, the hat is awesome too! Great Job!
Such an amazing color and figure on that body... Great job!
Thank you for all the help with your tips. I'm still new to doing this and you are a lifesaver!
Oh my goodness! Absolutely beautiful. That is definitely purple and I just love it! my gosh that's beautiful! I like watching your videos. I have e learned a lot, thank you. My goodness, BEAUTIFUL! Thank you, Pam
BIGD! My 2 favorite woods together in one build... has to be awesome! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise and especially the use of Angelus dyes; I've only gotten and used the black and tan... but that purple does look fantastic... makes me want to get all the colors.
Beautiful build! I’m sitting on three t-style bodies right now and am convinced to use the Angelus dyes because of your use in your videos.
I loved the color! It's my favorite color so this would be the guitar of my dreams. good job, you do an incredible job
I have been watching your videos for a about year now, and they are never repetitive or boring. You are a great inspiration keep up the great work.
I can vouch for Derek's catalog of videos!! Very extensive and extremely informative. Personally, I've learned a TON from watching these videos.
Learning how to finish guitars and your videos are so far the most straight forward I’ve found
Just watched this vid again (3rd time), all I can say is WOW! Yes purple is also my favorite color. But this body is just so beautiful! You have done a great job! Thanks again for sharing!
Stunning work on the quilted Maple Teli. I've learned a lot about staining figure woods from you. Love to have something like that to ad to my partscastor's. Thanks for your helpful videos!
Great video. Finishing tips & techniques in this and other videos have been very helpful. Your enthusiasm for the content is notable! Thanks.
Wow that is a beautiful body love the color and the pop your videos have been a big inspiration to me have learned so much
Awesome work as always. I'm hoping to do my first ever self built guitar very soon, and everything you have shared with us through your videos has been a wonderful help and inspiration. Thanks for everything you have shared :).
That's a real work of art, and now some lucky person can make musical art on it, and your craftsmanship will leave a mark for many people to be grateful for. I especially like the way the natural grain of the poplar shows through.
been watching your channel for a while now. learned alot from you that I was able to use it when I refiinish my guitar! always a great vid Man!
Looks awesome! Great choice on not feathering more black around the edges. I don’t currently have a Telecaster in my collection, and I have been watching quite a few of these videos to come up with finishing ideas for some other guitar projects I have been working on. It is awesome that you are sharing your experience with others and are inspiring some of us. Thank you! Please have an excellent and awesome day! 🙂
I love the fact that you are cranking out the videos and producing your art. Love it BigD! Happier outside SHC
Perfect tutorial, Quality wood and a perfect finish. All of your videos are great education for anyone wanting to learn how to finish wood and guitars in general, Thank You from Australia.
You've convinced me to build with poplar next, nice tutorial!
Wow.....That turned out amazing!!.....one of the best looking pcs of maple I've seen!!
As an enthusiast, I love learning every aspect of the guitar. I also am fascinated by the mysterious alchemy between the build, the sound, and the expression. Nice to watch someone doing something that most would not dare do in such a confident and relaxed manner.
This came out very beautiful. I’ve been following your videos that actually inpired me start my own guitar projects (and RUclips & Instagram channels). Just got my first Telecaster made out of pine ready. I have one extra neck (maple with corina fretboard) but no body that would be a perfect match with this body 😇 My goal is to build and study different woods and have no experience on poplar, yet... Thank you for great instructional guitar building videos. Keep on going!
Really beautiful color! Your work is astonishing.
Telecaster shape and that beautiful purple finish is just what i need. Love the video, bookmarked for any future experiment i might start myself
Wow that thing looks amazing! You sir do fine work.
Dude, that looks nice!
My current build is poplar and so far I like working with it. It's only my second scratch built guitar, so I haven't gone down the path of fancy exotic woods yet, but I will! Love your videos. I've learned a ton by watching and I know I'll always have more to learn, so I'll keep watching.
Absolutely beautiful
Wish I wasn't retired.
Amazing to see it develop into an work of art!
Man, that is just a beautiful job. I'd love to get my hands on it to build! Thanks for this video. Old guy coming back to playing after years away.
What a great colour! Who ever gets this is getting a stunning bit of kit.
Son is starting a Luthier class and we have been watching a lot of your videos for inspiration. Love the purple body!
I’ve learnt so much from watching your videos. Awesome colour on that body! Keep up the great work!
thanks dude!
Sir,I recently stumbled upon your site and I'm so glad I did. You make the projects look amazing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Oh, and just WOW this one is beautiful too
Awesome looking body! You have taught me so much about guitar building! I finally have started my very first build! My body is poplar and gonna keep it all poplar but I am doing a “used” look for the guitar. Put on the blue stain and sanded it off leaving a bit. Then applied another coat and sanded it with the 0000 steel wool. It looks awesome! Keep on doing the great videos as I am learning so very much! Thank you!!!!
I didn't know how much I actually needed this, I just keep coming back! I think I'm in love 😅
Looks incredible! Thanks for all the videos and tips. You truly are a master!
Absolutely love your channel. I recently tried my hand at a build, and I can't wait to do another.
This inspired me to use Angelus for my next build. Great color choice for that top. Very well done
I've been bingeing your videos since I started my own build.
Almost too much choice and I've like how you have tested different dyes and stains.
I'm going to be doing a PRS-style dragon breath in purple, crimson, orange - using stains - but following your tutorial.
Maybe both front and back - and a fade going up the back of the neck.
Might be biting off more than I can chew - but happy to give it a go, armed with a bag of tips and tricks that you've given me.
Your videos are the reason why I’ve began building guitars using kits. Your explanations and techniques convinced me I could do this. When my son is older, I want this to be our hobby we do together. Thanks for these videos!
Beautiful! Love the colour, and that figuring is stunning
This was a really cool video. I love the streak pattern, and the deep rich purple. Keep it up!
I'm getting into finishing and builds. I used to work for a cue builder and there's a lot of similarities. Really appreciate your style of teaching. Your John Deer outfit won me over. Kidding...Thanks again Warren
You explain thinks well would love to see that guitar up close! Every one does staining different and yours reminds me of the way I helped my father stain his cabinets!!
Looks incredible. I think I’m gonna try steel wool myself. Appreciate the videos, the hat and the 5.11 phone case. Keepin’ America alive brother ;D
Love the purple, my fave build of yours was the "Hulk" guitar, but this as just beat that. well done keep them beauties coming
Another awesome video! I have learned and awful lot from you and enjoy making my own creations based on lessons learned from you.
Love your videos! No idea who keeps disliking them. Not seen anyone else do this on youtube as much as you. Really great watches... nice and relaxing :)
Another unbelievable stain job on a telecaster body that I would totally rock that purple is amazingly beautiful thanks for another great video.
Run on Sentence...lol.. joking,, I agree with you.
Awsome pierce of Wood! I SEE all your videoes. Very helpful for an upstart hobby luthiere😊 Thanx a bunch. The guitar in cold colors I think will have a happy home herre in Norway😆 keep them goood videoes coming!
Learning so much fro you man! Looking to do a kit guitar but as a disabled vet money gets tight. Your vids are great and I feel more confident after every video. Impressive colors you pull off. Thanks for the knowledge.
I love telecasters with a good figured top. That’s something I don’t get to see as often as I wish. Great dye!
I am still gigging quite a bit. I play with you really good group of people we do a lot of southern rock and or call the original country blend five-part Harmony that's just absolutely incredible
Man you are so professional. Gorgeous guitar! Great Job!
I've never owned, but always wanted a purple guitar. I don't know why I never did. Such a fantastic co!or. Thank you!
Somehow I missed this one. Very generous of you to give away. My favorite color. Sigh. Someday I'll get there in time.
Thanks D!
Great choice of color - that purple is almost glowing
Another great video.
You have been the greatest inspiration in my guitar building journey.
Keep it coming friend.
Wow absolutely stunning in both colour and grain 😍
That looks awesome! I have yet to see quilted maple on a guitar that I didn't like. This summer I'm planning on doing my first build, but I doubt I'll be comfortable enough to attempt using it on the first go around making a body from scratch. Something to look forward to, I guess, if I enjoy the first build as much as I hope I will. If it looks half as good as your finished product here when i do end up going quilted, I'm gonna be beyond happy with it.
Thanks for the video!
Bro, thanks sooo very much for these videos! When I watch you do these guitars I disappear with you and the guitar in this creative process! I'm working on a project for my son and bought a dozen colors from Angelus and we are doing his guitar together. I get a bit nervous but im realizing that its good energy and its an exciting expectation, not quite knowing what exactly will appear! Thankyou for your expertise and your examples to provide the roadmap to this fun process!!
Karl and Erik
That is a beautiful purple color with a great piece of wood.
Wow .. man i was wanting to do a guitar but could never get a guitar to look that good, I love the purple dye. Thanks, for reading. I'm inspired to try refinishing an old walnut guitar body I love
Such a fantastic 3D effect! Love your channel, gets me inspired to make myself another guitar :) Thank you!
That looks amazing, I've got a walnut neck I just made with the help of your vids that would look perfect with it!! Thanks for all the good info.
I just finished my first Les Paul build with your finishing techniques and I am absolutely on love with the hobby, I would love to add a telecaster to my guitar collection!
Awesome guitar, great job, I’ve learned a lot from your videos over the years thanks for the opportunity.
I love the quilting, great piece of wood. The color turned out great, too. The top is obviously beautiful but I also like the hint of purple in the black on the back.
Good Lord! That is hands down the best Tele body I have ever seen. Purple isn't usually my go to for choice in color but that REALLY turned out amazing. I agree with you about the 2K as well. Its almost as if you've done this before lol. The fact that its been routed for dual hum buckers is perfect. Ive been looking for a figured tele body with dual hum buckers and they are shockingly hard to find! Well done, good sir.
I originally commented before the end of the video. After watching in full, all I can say is OMG!!! Freaking beautiful!
Excellent instructional video, for dyeing a guitar or any wood project. Thank you!
That's a stunning top. The waves in the maple look so 3D.
Man, that is gorgeous! Nicely done!
Long time subscriber and can say I'm never disappointed dude. Thanks for the video
Hi Big D! I have been putting together Warmoth (finished) bodies and necks for several years. but have not ventured into the staining and finishing side of it until just now. I got a lot of satisfaction out of the construction of the guitar and exploring the options of different pickups, potentiometers, tone capacitors, guitar setup, etc. I have been watching your videos and you have given me the confidence to give finishing a shot. Your videos are AWESOME! You take your time and explain all of the salient points of what you are doing so well that it really hits home. You should have followed teaching as a profession because you are gifted. I picked up a nice unfinished flame maple body on eBay and i am building it for my grandson.
Thus far, I have the body completely stained and ready to finish. Please help me out on the application process of the sanding sealer. I see that you use spray on. I purchased a Minwax brush on product. If you are familiar with that product, how many coats do you apply, and do you sand between coats? How can I control the thickness of the coats as you did with the spray on product? I also got the Minwax fast drying Polyurethane. How long do you wait after the sanding sealer until applying the Polyurethane? Any clarification you can provide on this part of the process would be much appreciated!
Thanks for any advice you can pass on!
You do Rock!
Dan
Purple is the most Royal of colours,it puts me in a haze.
Purple is the "Prince" of colors!
dunboozin I guess you got caught in a purple haze *badum tss*
WOW That is one pretty guitar body, those colors look amazing on that bad boy.. i have a set of pickups already ready to go in it ..lol but seriously very nice man good work
Man that's some good stain... You can literally SEE how good it is. You can see how good it works, and blends, everything.
Thank you
@@bigdguitars would you suggest this if I wanted to do the back of a maple neck? I've got 2 coming that I think I want to darken up.. Like an ebony... Or a dark brown, roasted look. One has a maple fretboard... But I don't want to do the fretboard. Only the back of the neck. Can I tape off the sides of the fretboard and use this? The other has an ebony fretboard. But the 2 neck shafts are very light and I think I want them looking dark. ... Kind of like what you've got on the sides of this when you started. Will it wear off? What's good to put over it after the color, and keep it smooth? I want it pool cue smooth in the back, not glossy or shiny. But I don't want to lose the color. I'm not going to be gripping it like crazy.
@@bigdguitars and... VERY nice, lovely looking guitar... I'm usually not big on purple..or teles... (But I do have my own particular idea for version of a famous tele that I'm about to do) but holy hell this darker purple... looks freaking amazing.
WOW!!! Absolutely amazing! Kudos for the DTOM hat too.
That's an amazing top tele right there, you've done a great job with it! If I ever get a guitar from you, this is the one I wanna get :D thanks for the vid and giveaway!
Amazing work as always. Love the channel, and enjoy the videos. Thanks for all your knowledge and work. P.S, the hat is awesome!!!!!
Hitting it with steel wool is the trick. Learned a lot from your channel.
