I would probably choose this over the A7C. S35 is underrated and for most personal projects and even some professional this will get you started. Sony is smart with this release because it’s an affordable way into their system for those of us who can’t afford or don’t need anything like the FX6 starting out. I would have even bypass the FX3 for an upgrade from this to the higher end cinema lines.
Dang that price blew me away! So stoked Sony is going this way. This is going to open up a lot of doors to aspiring filmmakers who can’t afford those higher end cameras!
I think what this camera represents is breaking more barriers for videographers in terms of gear ; at $1800, this thing is such an accessible avenue to having amazing videos without having to feel like you need to take a loan out for your camera , and it’s amazing for a b/c camera . The s35 truthfully doesn’t bother me much, coming from things like a pocket 4K/6K and the c200, sure there’s a difference, but it’s a great place to start for a cinema camera ( i ordered it 😅)

This is very exciting. As I'm moving up in the ranks of filmmaking, buying a camera becomes all the more complicated. Now that I've used ARRI's, it's very hard to justify buying a mid-range camera like the Komodo or an FX9, if I can just get the big guns onto a project via rental. But this seems like it's perfect to own, as it's significantly more affordable, but still has a stellar image, and it pairs nicely with the lenses I already own!
Super 35 have its pros and cons to work with but when you can work around it, then you have a superb camera. Fx30 for $1,800 is very affordable and gives so much to new filmmakers. Not sure what else can you ask for from Sony as I would love to have this camera back in 2016. Could have done so much with it and be able to buy new lenses at hte same time. Great camera overall!

Personally I'm excited about the FX30. I think Sony really filled in a gap that was lacking in this price range. The FX3 is just not justifiable in terms of cost for someone like myself. I wanted a dedicated video camera and this will meet my needs and then some. The crop isn't a huge deal for me personally as it will be good for my wildlife hobbyist interests. Time to save up or get a decent paying job hahaha! Well done Sony!

If I wasn't on micro 4/3 for 8 years (so i have couple of cameras, tons of lenses...) I would totally get the FX30 with the new sony aps c lenses : the size to quality ratio is incredible.
Hi! As a little background, I'm a satisfied Lumix m4/3 user but before the anouncement of the new S5ii I thought Panasonic was going to be stuck forever with its archaic focus system so after 6 years of using my lumix m4/3 camera I decided to switch to Sony for the superb autofocus. I chose the fx30 as it was the almost perfect camera. It had all good things from the fx3 but for a much more affordable price with the aps-c sensor. So I ordered it after having watched a ton of reviews and tests, where people on youtube claimed that it was all around an almost perfect camera. I received it and checked it out, made all the settings right and did some testing to see how/if I could work with it to replace/improve on my former Lumix camera. I found some flaws however that don't seem very small, I could enumerate them but maybe it's not required for this comment. The biggest of the flaws was its REALLY BAD IBIS system :(( I'm thoroughly dissatisfied with it and I'm wondering what to do?! I can't use the camera with such an IBIS as I shoot events and my former camera was very good for handling walking and movement, unlike the sony which sensor makes erratic movements and sensor shifts that render the video footage useless (Now having watched a ton of more videos I see that all sony mirrorless cameras, even the most expensive ones, behave like this concerning their IBIS) :(( I don't want to buy and shoot with a gimbal, as it would be another complication for my setup and Catalyst products seem to be an innovative way to deal with this issue, however the shutter speed must be really high in order to overcome the motion blur during stabilization. I tried with shutter speed of 200 and the footage came out still muddy. Maybe at above 250 it starts to work. This workflow of stabilizing each clip in Catalyst however seems very inefficient and time and energy consuming. So my final question after this whole dissapointment is: IS THERE A WAY TO STABILIZE SONY FOOTAGE without so much hassle? I have informed myself about a few possible solutions, mostly adding weight to the camera, but for event videography I don't want to add a ton of weight and go around with it all day long and as a result it doesn't help that much either. So I don't see as a solution these options as gimbals, having a heavy rig or extensive stabilization and render times in post. I tried handles with moderate success but the sensor shifts still persist and make the videos unpleasent the least. WILL EVERYBODY JUST STOP PROMOTING CAMERAS THAT HASN'T TESTED personally and properly. If any of the audience knows some solution for the Sony IBIS problem, I'll be happy to hear it. If I don't find any, it would be a pity, but I'd have to sell this otherwise potentionally good all around camera. Thank you.

At 01:54, just a clarification. The field-of-view remains the same whether you are using an APSC lens or a full frame lens. So, a 16mm APSC lens and a 16mm Full Frame lens would give you same field of view on FX30. It's when the sensor size changes that the field of view would change. Thanks for the review.
This cam looks promising. I'm thinking of upgrading from my mobile phone and finally buying my first proper camcorder. I was considering Fujifilm XS10 because of budget constraints but maybe waiting and saving for another few months for FX30 might be worth it.
When buying into a new system, consider longevity & an upgrade path. If you go with Fujifilm, there won't be an upgrade path. However, with Sony, there is a big upgrade path .. A74, A7s3 / FX3, FX6, FX9 Plus, all aforementioned cameras use the same mount!! As for Canon (though you didn't mention them), their issue is that their mounts are all over the place (so upgrade path is more complicated), and they blocked 3rd party lenses support on their RF mount! Dumb move.

I've been shooting with the Sony NEX VG20 E mount APSC video camera and have wanted to move up to the modern world. I like APSC, have my lenses already and wanted to stick with it so my only real choice was the A6600. I'm glad I waited because this will fit the bill nicely!

I've been considering switching to Fuji, and I still might, but this is definitely an appealing camera for this price point. I just hope Sony refreshes their APSC photo cameras as ideally I want to be able to use the same lenses for both of my cameras.

QUESTION: Do you know if you can activate the "crop mode" (1.62x) without entering 120fps? Say, shooting in the 4k 1.62x crop mode at regular frame-rates (24, 25, 30) with sync audio, just as a way to extend a prime lens' field of view? (Thank you for the great review).
You can use the zoom rocker while on a prime lens and it will punch into the image (at no quality loss; 6K downsampling will turn into 4K) ... I think it's 1.5x crop

Regarding the stabilization test of your video (I kind of liked you man, for your top handle idea) but in this video you seem to have made some trick which might not be very honest with your audience. You show a great shot of following your mate through the house which is supposed to convince us of the niceness of the stabilization of the camera. It seems to me however that this particular shot has been further manipulated to look so smooth, maybe you used catalyst browse or the stabilization feature of your video editor but that's not what you get out of this camera even with the so called "active" mode. I own this camera and I can guarantee you! As a proof your audience can look at the last minutes of your clip where you walk around with the camera facing you, in these last minutes people can observe how really the ibis is performing - very badly! I want to stay respectful and would gladly hear your answer and even would be glad to learn if there's some way to get usable walking footage of this camera. Otherwise I'll probably sell mine which is sad :(
I start thinking it was a marketing when I heard saying the image is clean even in low light? I got an fx30 and really 100 percent noise in the shadows specially on iso 2500 slog , but can fix abit in post
My main camera now is BMPCC4k and as a B I use my old and funky a6500! For the past few months, I have been wandering the streets thinking about another camera to replace my good-hearted Sony. The transition to full frame line would involve a change of the entire optics, and this one is assembled into the APS-C Sony (the entire Sigma prime line). Mark, will switching to FX30 and using it as Camery A and BPCC4k as B allow for visible qualitative progress? And I would also like to live in Texas, maybe not in such a big house, but for years I have been trying to get a visa to the USA, with no results. Peace Brother! ✌

i cant wait till i get mine, still have to wait till Aug till i get mine delivered, but on the upside my local camera store has a FX3 that they use as a rental but no one wants to rent it so their letting my rent it out till i get my FX30 delivered, so i'll shoot in crop mode like its a FX30 and learn.

I am curently using a @6400, I was fixed on buying an FX3, now that I saw this video, nothing changed. The full-frame lowlight performance and the shallow DOF justify the price of the FX3. I am still saving money to buy the FX3( probably best choice for a medium budget filmmaker). And my honest impression on the footage seen on this video seems a little noisy and blocky.

Why is this video uploaded in only 1080p? Rookie mistake. Need to upscale to 4k to get youtube to allow you higher bit rates. At 1080, there is tons of banding on this video, that we cant tell if it is actually there or not. Come on son.

I pre ordered it. I have been wanting to get another camera and a buddy recommended this . Its more than I need and I do not really make films but I am excited to learn it and play with it. I have an a6600 so my current lens will all work.

Love the s35 format. Just picked up a C70 and its incredible. Cool thing is I am not missing full frame because Canon made a 0.71x speed booster so you can use full frame EF glass and the perfect combination is the 24-70mm F4 which ends up being a 17-75mm F2.8 after speed boosted. 16 stops of dynamic range with the DGO sensor, built in ND filters, false color, xlr inputs, Canon color science, and NETFLIX approved. I considered an FX3 but there is no competition when you compare the two. The C70 is on the FX6 level but way more portable with a sensor from the $11,000 C300 MK3.

That looks incredible! My main question is, can you use it to live stream as well? I use my current Sony to film, photograph, and live stream I just use a dummy battery so it can stay on longer.
I move from photography to videography. Can I ask how can I use shortcut for exposure compensation in video mode? I find it very inconvenient to dig deep into the menu for changing the exposure compensation value, espcially when it's recording a footage. Thanks!

this is the dilemma that I´m going through everyday.. To rent those better cameras or buy something smaller

I need a little help. I put my fx30 in video mode and I can't leave the iso in automatic. what am I wrong?
This cam looks promising. I'm thinking of upgrading from my mobile phone and finally buying my first proper camcorder. I was considering Fujifilm XS10 because of budget constraints but maybe waiting and saving for another few months for FX30 might be worth it.
When buying into a new system, consider longevity & an upgrade path. If you go with Fujifilm, there won't be an upgrade path. However, with Sony, there is a big upgrade path .. A74, A7s3 / FX3, FX6, FX9
Plus, all aforementioned cameras use the same mount!!
As for Canon (though you didn't mention them), their issue is that their mounts are all over the place (so upgrade path is more complicated), and they blocked 3rd party lenses support on their RF mount! Dumb move.

I have one on pre-order already to replace my trusty a6400, which will become my new B-Cam/dedicated photography camera. Stoked to rig out this camera with a cage and a monitor etc. and really make this my workhorse!

I've been shooting with the Sony NEX VG20 E mount APSC video camera and have wanted to move up to the modern world. I like APSC, have my lenses already and wanted to stick with it so my only real choice was the A6600. I'm glad I waited because this will fit the bill nicely!

I need a little help. Although I haven't used this camera before, it looks promising. You have been incredibly helpful in enhancing my cinematography skills in India. I primarily focus on shooting brand films and architecture videos, and I'm eager to start creating travel films as well. Should I consider purchasing an FX30? Currently, I rent equipment for my production setups, which include the FX3 and A7S3. Would the FX30 be a suitable addition for small commercial projects and travel films, serving as a compact camera kit?

I've been considering switching to Fuji, and I still might, but this is definitely an appealing camera for this price point. I just hope Sony refreshes their APSC photo cameras as ideally I want to be able to use the same lenses for both of my cameras.

yes, already for the 10bit video alone, but don't expect shooting photos on this though (it only has an electronic shutter which has a slowish readout speed..)

QUESTION: Do you know if you can activate the "crop mode" (1.62x) without entering 120fps? Say, shooting in the 4k 1.62x crop mode at regular frame-rates (24, 25, 30) with sync audio, just as a way to extend a prime lens' field of view? (Thank you for the great review).
You can use the zoom rocker while on a prime lens and it will punch into the image (at no quality loss; 6K downsampling will turn into 4K) ... I think it's 1.5x crop

Regarding the stabilization test of your video (I kind of liked you man, for your top handle idea) but in this video you seem to have made some trick which might not be very honest with your audience. You show a great shot of following your mate through the house which is supposed to convince us of the niceness of the stabilization of the camera. It seems to me however that this particular shot has been further manipulated to look so smooth, maybe you used catalyst browse or the stabilization feature of your video editor but that's not what you get out of this camera even with the so called "active" mode. I own this camera and I can guarantee you! As a proof your audience can look at the last minutes of your clip where you walk around with the camera facing you, in these last minutes people can observe how really the ibis is performing - very badly! I want to stay respectful and would gladly hear your answer and even would be glad to learn if there's some way to get usable walking footage of this camera. Otherwise I'll probably sell mine which is sad :(

My main camera now is BMPCC4k and as a B I use my old and funky a6500!
For the past few months, I have been wandering the streets thinking about another camera to replace my good-hearted Sony.
The transition to full frame line would involve a change of the entire optics, and this one is assembled into the APS-C Sony (the entire Sigma prime line).
Mark, will switching to FX30 and using it as Camery A and BPCC4k as B allow for visible qualitative progress?
And I would also like to live in Texas, maybe not in such a big house, but for years I have been trying to get a visa to the USA, with no results.

i cant wait till i get mine, still have to wait till Aug till i get mine delivered, but on the upside my local camera store has a FX3 that they use as a rental but no one wants to rent it so their letting my rent it out till i get my FX30 delivered, so i'll shoot in crop mode like its a FX30 and learn.

I am curently using a @6400, I was fixed on buying an FX3, now that I saw this video, nothing changed. The full-frame lowlight performance and the shallow DOF justify the price of the FX3. I am still saving money to buy the FX3( probably best choice for a medium budget filmmaker). And my honest impression on the footage seen on this video seems a little noisy and blocky.

I was thinking of an upgrade this year from the alpha 7iii to the FX3. Now I’m confused lol. Is this better than the FX3? Seems that the full frame sensor will be better in low lights? I struggle with the price of the FX3 so I wonder what to do with this announcement. Wait until I can get the FX3 or have the FX30?

Ive been seeing footage and I still find some noise in a lot of shots. Think we are again have to learn how to expose on these new cameras using slog. +2.0 doesnt always fix things :/

@@Kandufilms Hands down. i would use the fx30 for a b-cam. Without question. I personally own a fx6 and yea i would it's lightweight and reliable. If your filming and have the money to spend i would spare no cost. The fx30 is nice but i personally ( because i own an fx6 ) wouldn't make it an A cam.

Why is this video uploaded in only 1080p? Rookie mistake. Need to upscale to 4k to get youtube to allow you higher bit rates. At 1080, there is tons of banding on this video, that we cant tell if it is actually there or not. Come on son.

Love the s35 format. Just picked up a C70 and its incredible. Cool thing is I am not missing full frame because Canon made a 0.71x speed booster so you can use full frame EF glass and the perfect combination is the 24-70mm F4 which ends up being a 17-75mm F2.8 after speed boosted. 16 stops of dynamic range with the DGO sensor, built in ND filters, false color, xlr inputs, Canon color science, and NETFLIX approved. I considered an FX3 but there is no competition when you compare the two. The C70 is on the FX6 level but way more portable with a sensor from the $11,000 C300 MK3.

Does the sony lens you used for the stabilization test have a stabilization switch( IBIS )? Is that GM lens?
That looks incredible! My main question is, can you use it to live stream as well? I use my current Sony to film, photograph, and live stream I just use a dummy battery so it can stay on longer.
I move from photography to videography. Can I ask how can I use shortcut for exposure compensation in video mode? I find it very inconvenient to dig deep into the menu for changing the exposure compensation value, espcially when it's recording a footage. Thanks!
