There can never be enough tutorials as we all learn differently and even when watching someone go over the basics again there's a chance we might see something we didn't know before so my hope is that you'll continue documenting your journey into Blender.
I've been using blender as a supplemental tool to other 3d softwares for over a year and this is one of the best tutorials I've seen. I actually learned several new skills here and am very grateful for this video and your style of teaching. Thank you.
I've watched several tutorials on section methods and none of them mentioned that you can click on different areas of a face to control the direction of the face loop selection. It's super simple and very useful! Thanks for the tip!
Thanks, this is a great tutorial. There's so many video's out there that claim to be for beginners that are almost impossible to understand when they're just realing off their morse code of 'left click, ctrl A, press S, drag out, ctrl M'.....it's important when learning to understand what the short cut keys are actually short cutting to and the majority of the time, they totally leave out the multi and path selections. I had no idea how they were selecting a ton of edges together to apply a bevel, now I know thanks to you. ps, you have the ideal voice and articulations for tutorials.
There's also Select Linked which is neat. Select a face/edge/vert and hit L on the keyboard - it selects all the attached faces/edges/verts. Or you can hover the cursor over a face, hit L and it'll select the linked faces. Also, you can set constraints to select link materials, uvs etc
Wow!!! I downloaded Blender 2.93.5 about seven and a half weeks ago. Lately I've been having difficulty selecting face loops to go in the correct direction. You can probably imagine how much time I've spent following the most intricate of loops to make sure I get every last face!!! Just WOW, thank you soooooo much for this simple explanation!! You have a new subscriber on this alone, thanks again :-)
Thanks alot!, you eased me the stress of selecting faces one by one with shift, as alt + left click keeps giving me vertical loop selection, thanks alot 😇
For horizontal loop selections (including inside faces in xray mode, very handy) do this. Hover the selection cross to the left or right of the middle of a vertical line (in Edit / Face Mode), with the ALT+SHIFT down (first selection just ALT needed), until you have all of the horizontal faces selected you need. (Blender 3.3 tested)
So great to see you using Blender. Welcome to the club. I know the many shortkeys are a challenge but you will get there. I have one more for you, to reset the 3D cursor press Shift+C That resets the cursor to the world origin and also brings all the objects in the view.
Thankyou so much bru, it's been 2days I was learning to creat a room , by watching tutorial on u tube but I was stuck on face selection...but FINNAL I learned 💙
Great video thanks for posting. I come from a 3dmax and Maya background and have finally decided to give Blender a try. I'm really digging the selection options in Blender. The loop selection is pretty intuitive now that I know it matters what region of the face you're selecting. The one thing that's disappointing is not having an option to change selection culling. Having to toggle xray everytime I make a selection is driving me crazy since 99% of the time I want to select both front and back faces.
glad to see you doing this. 2.8 got my attention as well. really a game studio could dump costly and manipulative autodesk and go totally blender and save tons of money and have way less hassles. the smart studios will do this. better sculpting and udim support are coming soon along with many other features as this just keeps going. 20year max maya guy here. im finding blender more fun to work in.
6:30 this technique is amazing, I knew it was possible to do, but I couldn't remember how, now I have it in my mind, thanks for sharing your knowledge ❤
omg thank you. All I want blender for is to take an STL miniature and delete out the weapon they are holding (etc). That x-ray selection is exactly what I needed,
If you can't find any tool or shortcut in Blender, you can press F3 ( Operator search menu) to look for whatever you are looking for. They've upgraded that menu a lot more with the V4 release and it basically everywhere.
This is really a great tutorial, I have been try to hop in blender and learning my way around , this video helped me learning some really cool techniques along with the shortcuts, (been fan of your work on substance )
thanks for this i applied for a 3d modeling job and they made me do a office chair with like a matress with grooves which i dont know if i should spend time sculpting with mouse or just do edit mode but in the end it just gave me a hard time on selection those selection and just redo it and ended up putting meshes instead of a whole mesh
To all 3D tutorial content creators on RUclips: *You don't need to set up the whole scene from start every time you want to show something. It's okay to start out with the assets you need to show that specific thing.* Thus, skipping to 1:30 - just to get to the point.
I did stop with Blender for a while. I started trying other 3D apps as well such as C4D. I am starting to use Blender again. I ended up really liking C4D for mograph tools and found it easier than the geometry nodes in blender.
very helpful, your voice is calming, I watched this video because I have an issue, it seems that blender doesn't completely deselect all, in the outliner you will find the mesh icon of the last selected and deselected object is still grayed(Active) and when I go to the shader mode to try select materials and then "select linked by material" the last deselcted object changes its material as if it was selected, also this confuses me while modeling because I have one object selected while the changes happen to the other object with the grayed icon in the outliner.
It's the simple things that matter! Thanks! What I'm trying to figure out is how to keep my selections from disappearing when I click off the object. I would like to be able to be able to click off, all be it accidentally, and not lose all my selecting work. Great to see you still pay attention to your comments after 4 years! I'm heavily shadow banned so I guess if I don't hear from such an attentive person I am banned here too.
Glad it helped! I need to get back into Blender and do an update to this video. Yeah, from what I understand, clicking off the object is causing a deselect.
I am sorry, I am not sure on 2.7. I haven't used that version. The x-ray mode should be there. The shortcut is ALT + Z in the latest versions. It might still be the same in 2.7.

@@stratabegood Still working on it!!! 😎

Thanks! Same here. Former modonaught
SUPER clear and practical, you don't play with the viewers :) thank you!!!
1:10 also you can press Alt+G and it'll reset all coordinates of the selected objects. Same works with R for rotation and S for scale.
Bohdan Lvov Also the F3 to find reset command for transform.

Great video, thank you! (coming from 3DS Max) - I notice you've not done any more Blender videos, did your journey end or are you still with Blender?
I did stop with Blender for a while. I started trying other 3D apps as well such as C4D. I am starting to use Blender again. I ended up really liking C4D for mograph tools and found it easier than the geometry nodes in blender.
This is incredibly helpfull, very good video. Thank you

It's the simple things that matter! Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. No worries. With a little concentration I'm able to not click off.
this was a very helpful tutorial! Is there a possible way to only select the front side and not the back on 2.70? Is there a way to turn off xray?
I am sorry, I am not sure on 2.7. I haven't used that version. The x-ray mode should be there. The shortcut is ALT + Z in the latest versions. It might still be the same in 2.7.
