There was a time were I preferred having a woman as therapist because gender has something to do with some of the reasons I go to therapy and I also thought, especially when it comes to talking about sexual abuse, I’d feel better talking to a woman. Back then at my school there was this male social worker and he completely changed my mind. It’s about the person, not the gender. I couldn’t find anyone yet where I feel as comfortable as in his sessions. I don’t know where I would have been back then without him.

I was the exact opposite, I didn't feel safe and heard until I had a make for the first time. I'll speak with women now, but as a black queer male, it's easier to talk to someone that checks off as many similarities to me as possible

I loved how Ted Lasso's therapist pushed back about the idea that a therapist only cares if they are paid enough to do so. IIRC, she asked Ted if he only cares about coaching because he's paid to be a coach, which of course is not why he cares. Therapists are professionals; that's what you are paying for.

I’m just a LCSW clinician 5 years out of being fully licensed and…this is hilarious and I agree with what you’re saying Jono. 😅😅😅
I’ve also found that, with the right therapist, and if, only if, the client wants to work on a relationship fracture (usually parental) it can be immensely healing to work with a therapist of that gender and have healing moments so someone can externalize and localize those moments to that person rather than ALL men, women, etc. and…I always support someone’s efforts to find a therapist that meets their parameters, especially as a woman. And adding class, race, etc. it’s important to not have the hierarchy so you can feel safe and do the work. This was hilarious ,

I'm a 37-year-old woman and I've only met with one female therapist for an intro and it was not ideal. The whole situation was hurtful and I felt exposed and uncomfortable. Looking back and immediately, I knew I should have never talked to her because she was the therapist of someone very close to me, but was weirdly both of their suggestions...
Anyway, I naturally have only a little more comfort with men because I've also had trauma from them, I think I've had more consistent insecurities with the women in my life... I just tense up when I'm talking to them and feel like I'm being judged which could be projection, in a vicious cycle of self-validation.
Sorry for the length but I love your opinion on male therapist because seriously if the guy was gay match made in heaven😂❤ Seriously.

That's a really good point about recent grads being up-to-date. Before I moved, I had a dentist who was pretty fresh out of school, and he was much, much better about communicating than any other dentist I've seen: he explained exactly what an issue was, what the standard of care for it was, and why. I think they're emphasizing that more in dental (and medical) school these days.

ROFLMAO this is great. I also love Taylor and this was my first introduction to the other two comedians. I really like the reality check you did and it was adorable to see you crack up like this. See, the "most women-like men" would be a reason for me to try for male therapist, cause the rep of men sucks more than ever (with the particularly messy ones having access to worldwide audience) in relativity to the awareness and information levels of the times they live(d) in. And any man I can find who helps to maintain my tiny bit of faith into that part of humanity, is currently a huge plus. :'D
That said though, when I was considering therapy after my ADHD diagnosis last year (which got lost in the limbo between my surgery recovery and my executive dysfunction and hate of phone calls) I was thinking of starting out with a woman. Just to lower the stakes a bit, cause there's already the neurodivergence hurdle that has to work out. Cause shockingly education on a condition doesn't mean a therapist "gets it".
The psychiatrist which evaluated, for example, apparently could diagnose it but did not get it (was a woman and headed towards retirement age group). She made standard therapeutic suggestions without realising they do neither fit me personally nor are some of the "standard things" actually ADHD ppl friendly or night owl circadian rhythm friendly.
And the most baffling part was a side comment of (I'm paraphrasing) "One wouldn't start the evaluation process unless one aimed to fix/heal/therapy it". And that left me speechless. Cause how about "In order to understand yourself", "in order to stop feeling imposter syndrome cause you KNOW you're like this but you don't have the authority to safely claim the label" or heck, even "to slap the paperwork into the faces of bureaucracy & the ppl around you who need a freaking official document to even CONSIDER your boundaries or needs, and to CONSIDER that you're telling the truth when you state that sth. doesn't work for you". 😮‍💨
I'm thankful the evaluation worked out but some things are not helpful in strengthening the ability of patients to seek help successfully.

I’ve had female therapists and I’ve had male therapists. Female therapists are good because they seem to know exactly what I’m feeling from a woman’s perspective and it’s really nice to feel seen in that way! I But I like that male therapists are often willing to put themselves in a woman’s shoes and try to understand. I’ve never felt like a second class citizen being around a male therapist. I think they are great at listening! Plus, one male therapist I had, I probably remember what he said the most out of all of them because he gave very practical advice. I agree completely with having an open mind when choosing a therapist. It actually reminds me of gynecologists too. I’ve had male and female, but weirdly enough, I actually prefer the men! They are weirdly better at giving the attention I need or maybe I just like that they are also just willing to listen and care and don’t use the fact that they’re men to discredit my feelings! Not to say that women have been crappy to me. Not at all. But they don’t really have to check their privilege in this case and be understanding. I think that’s why I like it. They seem to know that they NEED to listen because they haven’t experienced what I have experienced. I guess the humility attracts me!

My sister Robin tried to get me to go to therapy because she wanted me to take the blame for the violence between myself and my other sister, Maxine.
I was the one being beat up and chased to my room, and eventually (after I went full no contact with her) stalked for 15 years.
While I was caring for our dying mother, I as visiting Robin and setting up a firewall on her computer, and she exploded at me, and kept screaming at me until I yelled back. Then she kicked me out for yelling at her.
We tried mediated counselling. Mediated counselling my arse - it was an abuse session. With the full support of the counsellor, Robin threw a yelling fit at me because of "what I'd done to Maxine". I was not allowed to speak so much as a single word in my own defence. That did not end well.
Long after my mother died (in 2001) I had a few sessions with a therapist. He ran through some CBT, teaching me how to not think about things. That didn't help at all - I needed to actually work through stuff. It was a complete waste of time and money.
My experience with therapists has be universally bad and utterly pointless.

I had been reluctant to switch to a male therapist when my therapist at the time went on maternity leave. However, I trusted my psychiatrist when she recommended him, as she knew me well. I was open towards him about my reservations but he was so understanding and created an environment where I felt comfortable to voice any discomfort and/or the wish for a switch. (I go to a big practice with many therapists and psychiatrists so it's relatively easy to switch once you're a patient) Might have been his approach or the progress made through years of therapy, but I was able to cry for the first time when discussing one of the traumatic events. Being able to finally access my feelings was so hard and exhausting but my physical reaction as my body/mind was trying to prevent that from happening really shocked me.

Personally i won't ever go back to a male therapist bc every time i have i end up just telling them what i think they want to hear instead of the truth and i get nervous when i have their undivided attention, whereas when I've worked with women it feels like girl talk. I can make jokes and get vulnerable. I so have more of an issue with women my mom's age and older. But I don't think there's anything wrong with the therapists, it's just not a good fit. I work best with a therapist i can see as a peer or mentor but not an authority figure or i interact with them the same way i would an actual authority figure. I have those in my life, what i need is someone i can be totally myself with who knows what they're talking about and isn't going to make me feel dumb or childish. It might also have something to do with how the other older (compared to my current one who is only ~10ish years older than me) therapists is that they were pretty non reactive, which as a neurodivergent person who's doesn't their whole life desperately trying to figure out how people are feeling so i know if i messed up a social situation or if I'm being manipulated (bc both those things happen a lot and i have trouble realizing it if no one points it out) I get really nervous if I can't read someone's expression. My current therapist is also neurodivergent and very open about expressing her emotions which let's me stop focusing on that, feel safe expressing my own emotions, and makes her feel like a friend rather than someone who is going to judge me

*Re: Therapist’s Age -* it’s not the education that’s the problem it’s life experience. I can’t imagine trying to explain divorce after 25yrs of marriage to a 28yo woman who’s about to go on her bachelorette party wkd. She couldn’t possibly understand or relate, nor should she. Let her find out the hard way like the rest of us. 😂

      @rayesafan9628 3 месяца назад

I get that, but he’s saying that this newbie might be better at diagnosing you than the seasoned divorced therapist.
It depends what you need. Do you need someone who can honestly say “I know what you’re going through”, or someone who can say with more accuracy “you’re actually suffering from this mental health issue. I know because I had to basically memorize the DSM-5 and I’ve read all the new research.”
I have a sister in law who is a social worker. Their work is professional and scientific. I’m sure her life experience has made her a better therapist, but most of all her education made her be able to know how to give therapy.
It depends if you want a friend who happens to be a therapist or a therapist who happens to be a friend.

In that last clip, I also would push back against the idea that your therapist is there to tell you what to do. Your therapist is there to listen and to help you. Sometimes they will offer you tools as part of that, but they aren't going to wag their finger at you and tell you what you need to do to get better. As Johno has said in the past, it's about leading people to find their own answers and their own methods to overcome the adversities in their lives.

Have a lady therapist and she’s great. Had another lady therapist and it’s like she’s never talked to a man before. Have talked to men who have their own unique views on things. Everyone’s different and every patient is different (even when you’re going in for the same reasons). The key is to find your fit!

I love this! Specially had to laugh at the last one. I also came in once with the idea that I needed a female therapist due to experiences I’ve had with men and I could not stand the comment from the man who did my intake session that it might be healing to do therapy with a male therapist. Some time went by and I had to try a couple more different practices to look for the right treatment. It took about 1,5-2 years. And now my last treatment was with a male therapist and he was amazing and yes it was healing ✨

I listen to stand up comics frequently because I'm an aspiring comedian, and I was listening to a bit from Rosebud Baker. I really wish you could talk about this one that I saw because it's very clear that this was her way of trying to cope with the trauma but no matter how she could have worded it, there's no way it feels like something to laugh at. It was about her sister dying... :(

The reason we needed hardened therapists rather than one who's just up to date on the research is because we don't need the judgment. We need someone who isn't going to flinch or try to hospitalize us just because we're accidentally a little too truthful. I've had therapists who visibly recoil at the mention of my weight problems and I've had others who after hearing my easy childhood stories will tell me that I need someone more experienced. I don't need someone who's up to date on research, I need someone who can see the difference between me venting and me being a danger to others

I had the exact opposite reaction to the lady who said they wanted an old therapist. I was diagnosed as a kid with ADHD but after I stopped struggling in school my parents just decided to ignore it and that I was cured, fast forward to my first uni year and it was... rough, I am pretty smart so that was the only reason I was keeping my head above water for so long, after first semester I decided to see a uni psychiatrist, and probably due to a mix of me not feeling comfortable and we not being a good fit he misdiagnosed my problems as anxiety and gave me some light meds... they did not help, arguably according to my parents they only made me slower like it took me a tad too long to react. Second year I tried a young psychologist and I felt so much more seen and understood, after this summer I went to a new psychiatrist and am now trying to find the right dose of meds that actually do help

I chose my first therapist specifically bc he was a man and I knew that many of the issues I was facing centered on my romantic relationships, so I wanted to use the therapeutic alliance toward that end. He was a HUGE help to my life. We ended up focusing mostly on my undiagnosed anxiety, how critical of myself that I didn’t realize I was being, and yes, eventually the romantic issue I had been struggling with for four years. It really set me up for my next therapist where she and I could focus on more existential issues.

I’d echo that last comment. The two best matches as a therapist that I’ve ever had couldn’t be on paper farther away from each other: a white hippie old man from the Midwest, and a young African American woman from New England. They both took time to listen to me, they both had the expertise in trauma that I needed, and I ultimately got the care that was best for me. In between one and the other I met with several other therapists who technically on paper had more in common with one or the other, but that weren’t a good fit for me. Having an open mind about the demographics of your therapist is the best thing, because just like you are much more than the product of the obvious demographic data people can see at a glance, so are therapists. (All that of course if one of those demographics aren’t directly linked to a a particular trigger for you and would ultimately hinder your ability to connect and freely communicate)

I found early on I had to screen my therapists based on whether or not they were “faith-based”. Most therapists in the Midwest operate within their Christian religious structure. While I am a Christian, a lot of my trauma comes from the Christian cult I was raised in, and I find that there are certain trigger phrases/terminology and certain belief structures that most Christian therapists I have seen have that make me feel unsafe, regardless of whether I am actually unsafe.

The one about the good therapists being booked is so true. I did so much research only to get "oh we are not taking any patients". The only good ones I could find were not covered under my insurance and unfortunately that's a steep cost.
Not to diminish the work, for sure worth ir.

The therapist I saw in my 20s and 30s was a seasoned (read semi-retired) male. He was an excellent therapist overall. However, when I mentioned that I had been diagnosed with ADD he kind of brushed it off saying that I must not have a bad case, and that he had seen much worse cases where people couldn't even sit still. When I was diagnosed in the 80s, the thinking was that people with primarily inattentive type ADHD (which used to be called ADD) shouldn't be treated with medication, and that people grew out of having ADHD as they got older. It was also considered to be mostly a condition that boys had. Girl's weren't even included in ADHD studies. It is now known that ADHD often presents differently in girls than it does in boys. I don't know if this old school thinking colored his perception of my diagnosis. At the age of 40 I finally sought treatment for my ADHD and it has improved every aspect of my life tremendously.

I have seen some therapists in my life and unfortunately I guess I haven´t found the one I could get help from. I believe the „best” feedback I have ever got back from a therapist was „From the viewpoint of world revolution your problem is not big”. Sigh. Another, otherwise very nice therapist told me that as she does not have children, she can not understand my concern. Ok, if so, then so. One therapist made me fill questionnaries with questions like „Do you care what people think of you?” I asked if I can specify, that I care what some people (like my family, friends) think of me but she said no. So I replied no.This session ended quickly. So right now I feel that talking therapy may not be for me.

    Older therapist:
I can see a young therapist having trouble getting an older patient to open up. The world was different back when they were younger, so if they're talking about their childhood, they might need to stop every few minutes to translate. Try telling a young about rotary phones and dial-up internet if you lived through both.
Also, being up on the current research is a great thing. It's definitely the best part of getting a younger therapist. But a lot of people tend to think that experience matters. People tend to get better at things the more they do it. You had the most up to date training under your belt, but you now have years of experience in working with patients. And I bet you've been trying to keep up to date with the newest techniques and studies, too.

Most cut their teeth in public behavioral health - working for whatever federally mandated behavioral health service provider is responsible for any given area. Most states organize such services parallel to their health districts, forming a network of quasi-public organizations and hospitals providing adult and child & adolescent services that range from criminal justice assessments & case management to substance abuse services and individual therapy. They typically spend a few years working a wide range of programs while providing individual and group services in a variety of settings before moving on to other public/private organizations (Hospitals, DFCS, Courts, etc.). Many will open individual practices part time on the side before jumping to fulltime once its financially viable for them.
