Dude , when I was in college, I said this to a douche( I thought) and he said..” did you just quote Megadeth?” Instantly became cool with each other lol
@40kedge NIIICE, I'D REACT THE SAME WAY, I used to pre-judge everyone with short hair, until Layne Staley cut his hair, then I opened my mind a little more.
The guitar work in megadeth is insane. Practically reinvented the genre. The guitarist for lamb of god said that "it brought jazz to thrash metal" and that's just so delightfully accurate.
a LOT of tunes from the 80's still have relevance because the same political hacks are still in charge.. The dead kennedy's dedicated songs to Diane Feinstein back in the early 80's. Those songs are still relevant because she is STILL holds that seat of power from when those songs were written.. 40 years ago..
How is 1986 the early 80s? Even their first album came out in 1984, which was the mid 80s. For some reason, I've seen several comments from people who say stuff is from the early 80s, when it's mid or late 80s. I've never seen it mistaken the other way.
Heavy metal is some of the most complex and intelligent music genres out there. Lots of people thought this was just a bunch of noise and stupid lyrics but many heavy metal bands put a lot of thought and effort into making some really intelligent music. A lot of what they play is very classically based in the arrangements and progressions as well.
Megadeth is an iconic band in the metal scene. They have influenced countless metal bands. They have a deep discography with tons of great songs. My absolute favorites are tornado of souls, hangar 18, in my darkest hour and wake up dead. The music for In my darkest hour was written after the death of metallica bassist Cliff Burton. The lyrics are about a bad relationship.
For so many of us, our first introduction to Megadeth, the video in heavy rotation on Headbanger’s Ball. So sooo good. I was hooked on them immediately 😌🙏
This single's video was indeed impactful. Although many Thrash videos aired (primarily) from Midnight to 3 AM on MTV's Saturday night show "Headbanger's Ball", none had yet become one of the weekday Top Ten requested videos until this release. I believe this rose to #1 on MTV's daily Top Ten, but I may be mistaken about that. Metallica had still not released a video as a sort of boycott of MTV, so the "accepted wisdom of the day" was that they would have broken this Pop Music barrier first had they done so. That notion is also supported by the explosive success of their first MTV video a bit later, "One". There is more to be said, but this answers your expressed curiosity about the video's impact at the time.
one of the cool bits of trivia of how this song came to be was that it was originally going to be like 8 minutes long. but the band's producer at the time was like "guys you've got a great anthem here if we can cut it down" and he was the only guy outside of the band that dave trusted with music decisions and rolled with it and a true icon of 80s thrash was born
80's metal...so many bands addressed social and political issues. Two very interesting bands to look into are Nuclear Assault and Sacred Reich. Those guys dug deep lyrically
Great reaction. I'm listening to Megadeth since 1991 and i'm glad to see your experience. My two suggestions: - The conjuring as an art peace, probalbly for your musical (and workout) desire. - Tornado of Souls for Mustaine's expression to the end of a relation. (with one of the best Solos) Love to all of you!
Dave has some writing credits on Metallica's first album "Kill 'Em All" with a few songs on the second album "Ride The Lightning". Dave has claimed that he worked on one other song but that claim was denied by Metallica, and to be honest, I can't hear the influence. Dave's early work is very distinct and very focused on the tritones.
Timeless classic. MTV News used the bass line for their intro. What i like about this song is that it's political without being divisive. Everyone can get behind this one.
Great reaction guys. Another song I would suggest from Megadeth is Good Morning/Black Friday. Probably Megadeth's greatest song in my opinion. The riffs in that song are on another level.
For great riffs, I prefer Wake Up Dead or My Last Words. I mean, Good Mourning has a great melody, but overall I think Black Friday isn't one of their best songs. It's Good, but they have better.
Eye of the Beholder by Metallica will blow your mind. It is a very prophetic song about the amount of censorship today in society. Who can dictate what you say. 🤘🎸🤘
My jaw dropped the first time I listened to this and realized the bassline was the intro to MTV News. Dave said MTV knew just where to cut it off so they didnt have to pay him for using it.
This is my favorite Megadeth song they played it in plymouth indiana a couple months back for like a forty year anniversary of the album i drove nine hrs each way to see them worth every second and penny
This was my first foray into Megadeth seeing it on MTV heavy metal half hour back in like 1986 maybe when I first started really getting into heavy metal
My ex wife got me backstage at a concert in my hometown in Indiana, i got to meet him and take a picture, in 2001, or 2002. Of course she took the picture
Yeah absolutely Dave started this band after getting the boot from Metallica. While staying in an LA apartment building he met Dave Ellefson in the same building. Ellefson had moved to LA from the small Minnesota town of Jackson to pursue his dream of being in a band. Kinda crazy also that Megadeth auditioned MANY lead singers and Mustaine after being frustrated they couldn't find anyone who he thought was a good fit said I'll just have to do it then, and has remained their lead singer all through the years
Thrash metal is the most socially conscious form of metal. And behind punkrock, probably the most socially conscious genre that exists. Thrash bands are always political and more often than not, very keen on aggressively spreading a message of anti-corruption and usually anti-fascism. Most punk is left-wing or anarchist and a lot of thrash is too, but rather than two-wing rhetoric, the point of thrash is just general anger at the status quo and historical injustice (where you get Anthrax or BodyCount for example) and lashing out at any governments and corrupt leaders and generational disputes (Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies, Power Trip etc.). The other main point is being against religious authority (that's where you get Slayer or Suicidal Angels and all of Black Metal as a genre, starting with Venom) and being against war and militarism by making horrid descriptions laced with satire and parody (that's where you get bands like Sacred Reich, S.O.D. and Sodom...) Some of it is also just against the music industry. Mainly against censorship. A lot of 80's thrash metal artists recall trying to come up with the most messed up lyrics they could, just to push the boundaries of what you're allowed to say on a song. That mentality eventually leads to brutal death metal of course. Thrash is always political in some way, but it's always under so many layers of irony and parody that nobody can call the bands out on it, and that's the spirit of all punk metal (extreme metal) at the heart of it, even if some of the newer bands don't care about that or realise that was the case.
If you like messages in metal and Megadeth, I might suggest Hook In Mouth. It was written in response to Tipper Gore and the PMRC when they were trying to censor music in the 80s.
Slayer is another one of the big 4 amazing drumming.. side note Slayer is the only metal band signed to def jam label.. they was on that label in beginning with Run Dmc beastie boys and Slayer but yeah.. Seasons in the abyss amazing song and album
Metal IS "modern classical". The difference between the two is that classical is constrained by only being the music. Metal is what you get when you directly overlay the message on top. Rap is great for messaging for example, but it rarely (In my limited experience) hits the music, it is more....... beat orientated, like electronica or dance music, which serves a purpose, but it is confined to an "event" such as going clubbing or just dancing. Metal is the bridge between words and feeling, be that in thrash such as Megadeth, or symphonic like Nightwish. Listening to good metal (whatever that is for you), is like having an audiobook slammed into your head without missing a beat from the soundtrack.
If you want an intense straight up 'in your face' Megadeth song, then do Head Crusher. If you want to do their 'radio friendly' hit then do Symphony of Destruction.
Next suggestion for Megadeth do either Tornado of souls or Hangar 18. A list of songs that you should react Megadeth songs: The Conjuring Wake up dead Tornado of souls Five Magics Hangar 18 Take no prisoners Rust in Peace... Polaris. My favorite album by them is, So far...so good...so what. Since to mentioned classical music, in my opinion, The track 'In my darkest hour' is Mozart-esque, with its downward spiral into madness sound.
"WHAT'D YA MEAN I'M NOT KIND,....JUST NOT YOUR KIND!!!" MY FAVORITE VERSE
Dude , when I was in college, I said this to a douche( I thought) and he said..” did you just quote Megadeth?” Instantly became cool with each other lol
@40kedge NIIICE, I'D REACT THE SAME WAY, I used to pre-judge everyone with short hair, until Layne Staley cut his hair, then I opened my mind a little more.
Mine too
love the lyric so much , i had it put on a shirt
I definitely have that in common with you
The bass line at the beginning was MTV's news outro in the 80s. Iconic
For real?? 🤩
The guitar work in megadeth is insane. Practically reinvented the genre. The guitarist for lamb of god said that "it brought jazz to thrash metal" and that's just so delightfully accurate.
Dave head-hunted fusion-jazz musicians and landed two GOATS in guitarist Chris Poland and drummer Gar Samuelson.
@@lsu1992Chris Poland was STUPID good!
A song from the early 80s still has relevant lyrics today, 40 yrs later.... powerful

Those songs are still relevant because she is STILL holds that seat of power from when those songs were written.. 40 years ago..
Politicians never change, hence it will allways be relevant, sad but true.
Mid 80's (1986) actually.
I listen to it at least twice a day!
How is 1986 the early 80s? Even their first album came out in 1984, which was the mid 80s. For some reason, I've seen several comments from people who say stuff is from the early 80s, when it's mid or late 80s. I've never seen it mistaken the other way.
My next suggestion would be "Wake Up Dead". The breakdown will make you appreciate the musicianship even more. RIP Gar.
The riffage and solos in this song are ridiculously great.
Dude I recommend Wake up Dead all of the time everywhere! My favorite all time Megadeth song! That song is the definition of metal.
@@yeahboiii6640thrash metal. Also, the music vid is my fav
🙏🙏
Hook in mouth too !

Who's old enough to remember when they used that opening bass line for the Mtv promos?
Yes! That and Chromatic Death from SOD
Totally forgot about that one 👍

The unsung heroes of putting together an album, the producers the mixers. They’re the ones that get the great tracks out perfectly.
So truly happy to watch you two actuality liking this. Takes me back to when I first heard it( damn like in 1988?? Damn I’m old )
Love this song, i remember sitting in my bedroom in HIGH SCHOOL, BLASTING THIS, PLAYING "AIR GUITAR 🎸 AND BANGING MY HEAD!!!" 😂
For so many of us, our first introduction to Megadeth, the video in heavy rotation on Headbanger’s Ball.
So sooo good.
I was hooked on them immediately 😌🙏
That intro baseline was the theme that started MTV news way back when if you remember that far back like an old fossil like me.....
So many great Megadeth songs. Wake Up Dead, In My Darkest Hour, Tornado of Souls, Foreclosure of a Dream, Polaris. And so on ...
There is a video of where Dave Mustaine went on Rock and Roll Jeopardy and kicked everyone's ass. Super smart guy

The intro to this song was also used as the intro to MTV News with Kurt Loder

Heavy metal is so overlooked as far having meaning. Glad it’s getting a re-birth. Aggression is a real emotion 🤘🤘
From the same album is a song called "The Conjuring" and it is 🔥
The opening bass riff was for MTV news for several years (when MTV was still focused on music)
Great reaction.
I'm listening to Megadeth since 1991 and i'm glad to see your experience.

My fav band of all time !!! See them everytime they come to NJ or tri state area🤟🏽
The riffs are GREAT, AND IT'S GOT AN UNDENIABLE GROOVE to it!!! He's a GENIUS, BTW he's got writing credits on the first 2 or 3 METALLICA ALBUMS
Megadeth sells...but who's buying? LOL, no just kidding. I love Marty Friedman.

Just do the entire Peace Sells album. Great job.
MTV used the opening bass line from this for years advertising themselves.

Hey Phil and Sam, the actual title of the album that this song is on is "Peace Sells....(But, Who's Buying)"
THANK YOU for mentioning classical! I've said that for years. Metal is pretty deep. I love when people realize that it isn't just noise 😏
Chris Poland on Guitar only peace sells , jazz fusion background . And Gar Samuelson on Drums.
Nice reaction, best song imo from this album has to be “my last words” a killer with the guitar riffs

Megadeth is true Technical metal Music...those guys orchestrate their music like classical composers do
Hook in Mouth by MEGADETH is another awesome song of theirs
Metal can cover everything from war to comedy and everything in-between.
