A hell of a lot of Megadeth's themes and lyrics refer to the cold war - ever since the 60s Cuban missile crisis and throughout the 80s and 90s, there was a huge cultural fear of atomic annihilation which influenced everything from music to video games like Fallout.
Even their band name references this. As a 'Megadeath' means a million deaths due to a nuclear war.

Absolutely! I saw this line up twice at the El Dorado Saloon. A small club in Sacramento, CA. Gar was this big tall dude. I think people used call him a praying mantis on the drums. Megadeth was badass in small venues too. Chris was a ripping guitar player. Back then, Dave was playing a lot of leads, but he was putting more effort into singing, so Chris took over more leads and of they were playing multiple solos in their songs, so both would do this live too.

You gotta take into account that while we had no major conflicts going on at this time, we were smack dab in the middle of the Cold War, and had the ever ominous possibility of nukes falling from the sky. I was only 8 or 9 when Mt St Helens erupted and I thought it was the start of WW3.

As for the song Peace Sells, it's mainly about the stereotypes and how metal heads were treated back in the 80's as being lazy, not working and metal being anti religion. As the song progresses it points out actual main issues of government power and over reach and that all they care about is conflict whether its within its own country or with other countries. As I stated in previous comment war is big business..... look how Bush profited from the oil business after 9/11 when Desert Storm was a go 🤘😎🤘

Still have my autographed cassette of them on the Peace Sells cassette. Dave's a grumpy guy but had him laughing when I got him to sign a pic from a Rock mag. He nudged the bass player and they both started laughing and Mustaine told me the whole story behind that photo shoot. He told me that all he could think about that day was to hurry the fuck up on the photo shoot. I asked him what he had in his hands in the pic and he said a cognac and a carrot in the other hand.

While there was no big war going on at the time, there were a lot of smaller conflicts. You had USSR still in Afghanistan, the IRA in Great Britain, the US was in the middle of the Iran-Contra scandal, and had terror attacks in Europe. I just this song was about the war industrial complex.

The Cold War -- tension between the US and Soviet Union from like 1947-1991 when the Soviet Union dissolved. There was no actual war but conflict. Huge arms race as each of the other superpowers were continually working on nuclear weapons. There was always a threat. There was also the conflict in East and West Germany separated by the Berlin Wall. The Scorpions song Winds Of Change is about both and the video depicts it.

Early to mid-eighties saw a peak in the Cold War with the threat of nuclear war at probably its highest point since the Cuban crisis of the 1960's. While nobody was all that worried by it on a daily basis the media played on it a lot with dramas like Threads (here in the UK) and the like showing what would happen in the event of the red button being pressed. So while there was no real conflicts as such the events, and worries, of the time gave rise to songs like this as well as Set the World Afire as far as Megadeth were concerned.

This album was released when I turned 18, the hilarious irony is that those "hippys" who grew up as teens and young adults during the late 60's were now the parents of the metal heads, these lyrics reflect the hypocrisy of being told by "free lovers" go to church, cut your hair respect your elders, go to rehab, go to collage, conform conform conform, the "metal head" anthem became "truth over money" we were able to see through the lies of image, and our parents were beginning to realize they stopped believing in peace too.

Parent Music Resource Center, founded by Tipper Gore and others to clean up rock music and “protect the children”. Because parents apparently couldn’t stop their children from going to record stores and seeing album covers and buying music that this group thought was objectionable. There was no internet. Their was no music sharing services. The music the group was against wasn’t being played on the radio. So the only way the children could get it was to buy it. I remember buying a Jane’s Addiction album with a solid white cover because the PMRC banned the cover art.

I was a child in the 80s, and the Cold War (albeit cold and not hot) was something we thought about every day. Soviet submarines would stalk our shores, playing hide and seek with our coast guards, and huge military exercises would take place. There were some close calls too, almost triggering WW3. Then, we had several minor conflicts, like the Falklands War, Grenada, Afghanistan, Iran-Iraq war, and the first Intifada in Israel. Plenty to worry about ;)

Here's a fun fact: The name megadeth is actually a measurement of how many people are killed in a nuclear blast. 1,000,000 deaths= 1 megadeath. Dave just removed the A and boom! He had a name for his band

    • @LudusAurea
      @LudusAurea Год назад +1

It was removed because there was a legal conflict with another megadeath but Dave won in the end, no ones ever heard of that other band.

It's crazy but on the one hand we want peace. But in order to get it, we need to fight for peace.

I love this song and Symphony of Destruction
I saw them live with FFDP back in August, it was so amazing to see them live
Especially since I grew up listening to Megadeth, Metallica, KISS and ect
(My mom's a metal head lmao)
But react to Symphony Of Destruction its definitely an amazing song! :)
