Hilarious how it was their red-headed stepchild in the 90s when everyone wanted JCM900/1000 distortion. Now those are all but gone & these are golden again.
Today we’re gonna check out a mid eighties JCM800. These still have the classic Marshall tone, and can be had relatively cheap due to the bad reputation of late 80s 100W JCM800s. This one still has the earlier circuit though (original # filter caps) Cheers Johan
Johan Segeborn cool cool, I had one of these in the 90s. Still regretting selling it. There’s something very special about a 100w Marshall. Lookin forward to the video 🤘
Which of these 80s 800s one should try to find and how do you separate the better ones. At least inputs and 1 channel etc were some of the factors. Cheers!
Whenever I decide to buy a Marshall, I use your videos for a reference as I feel that they are the closest representation to what the amp actually sounds like in person. And so far it hasn't let me down yet
Absolutely brilliant playing Johan. You've gotta put your music out there for the world to appreciate. Very few musicians play purely instrumental music and even fewer do it as well as you do. I'll buy an album of yours if you put one out. Love the videos.
Had a 2203 jcm800 from 1981 or something. Still the best rock'n'roll amp i've ever owned. 2203 from early 80's will always be my personal favorite! Great video, absolutely loved it!
i love it, this one gave me the chills, one of my favorite Marshall tones, all that late 70's early eighties AC/DC /Judas Priest tone came rushing back!
Recently bought a 1986 2203 for $750, I don't think I'll ever get a better deal on equipment! Mine has the browned grilled cloth too. Sounds great as always my friend!
Just got a JCM 800 2203x today. Loving the amp. I noticed you have the preamp on 8. I noticed this is the sweet spot on this amp. At 10 I noticed it lose a bit of clarity. At 8 it sounds great!
Those wanting a lower-wattage 2203 should look into the Ceriatone 2202; it is a 20W version of the 2203, which uses a significantly more accurate translation of the 2203's circuit than the 2204 used. It also gives significantly more control of signal level throughout the circuit such that using a power attenuator would give complete control over volume and gain, thanks to the following standard features: * a standard gain knob, controlling gain at the beginning of the preamp * a rear-mounted gain knob, controlling gain at the end of the preamp * a switch to bypass the tone stack, increasing gain when engaged * a standard master volume knob, controlling volume before the phase inverter * a post-phase-inverter master volume knob, controlling volume after the phase inverter As such, the Ceriatone 2202 is not a clone; it is a genuine advance, however derivative it may be.
I was lucky enough to score a new Lead 12 in the mid '80s and a couple years ago found a perfect '85 4104 combo in the same color as this head... I love it!! Thanks for your wikked videos, I've learned so much bro!! 💣
I had three brand new ones here a couple weeks back to go through before a tour. Nice, beautiful right out of the factory box onto my bench! It'll be like crossing "the bridge of sighs" when RT plays them!
Johan Segeborn I just did three brand new JCM800's of his that are over 100 watts clean! Four Vintage-Modern's and two Bluesbraker heads! They leave for New York today! I've worked on his U.S. rigs since 2005.
Well done and thanks for sharing brothers! Enjoyable mix and Tones! Great format, I Do So Love Your Split Screen Mixes ! Be Well Simon, Be Well Johan!I
I'd love a comparison between the horizontal and vertical input 2203s. I have always heard that the horizontal are "worse" but this one sounds like an 800 to me!
Hey Johan, really great video as always, sounds killer. I have a 2204 81, I gigged it and found that you have to run the preamp high like you did here to negate the effect of the bright cap otherwise they can be trebly. 3.5 on the master is pub gig volume with preamp on 9. Sounds killer and still cleans up perfectly with the guitar volume. Funny I run my bass control on eight and it still sounds good. Cheers
Oh Hell yeah,,,lookie what topped up my RUclips Charts on Christmas day 2020. Johan absolutely going Full BEAST MODE. Johan Segeborn Rock! Lemme tell you man. The Top Two Rockers in the World today. Angus and You. Cheers
Next time don't forget to invite Brian Johnson to handle the vocals. Nice one Johan. Please another with is amps with those clean chords you do so well. Cheers and have a nice weekend.
I think that amp has always been underestimated for what it did for Slash's career and Guns und Roses. Believe me, you showcased that amp for what it is worth big-time. Saludos!
Johann the passive, showing us his aggressive side. The best I've heard that model sound. Usually it's that high gain hair metal crap, but this had that raw edge seventies tone.
I only had the good luck to play a JCM800 head once (50w or 100w I'm not sure) in 1989. It was in the basement of Chandler Guitars in Kew (a much missed guitar shop) and I was trying out a Fender Standard Delux. What was REALLY striking about it was the sheer amount of harmonic undertones and overtones which it gave out... distortion that was genuinely harmonic and musical... almost like many coloured bubbles. It was as hospitable as real ale; not aggressive but like a close ally; almost a warm friend. Plenty of Marshall cut-through but really sweet-sounding. I never plugged into anything better....
I have a 1982 JCM800 lead series head witch sounds exactly the same when plugged in the high input. This amp is great for fuzz pedals when plugged in the low input. Especially the Frantone Peachfuzz.
I have an 83 or 84...it has 5 caps...they went down to as few as 3 if i remember correctly...got it loaded with mullard xf3 double getters....its a monster..cant break 2 volume during practice
Brother! Can you please do a show on the two new Studio Series Marshalls? You’re the definitive Marshall expert in my book! Thanks for all the great work!
Jesus christ, Johan only has 59k subs?!? His videos literally have articles written about them on every guitar forum on the internet.
Thanks man :-)
Well He's got 75.5 subscribers now dude.. 😎🤟

In my opinion, it’s the best sounding amp Marshall made. There’s a reason loads of guitar players still use the JCM800 2203 today still.
Cheers

Sounds great but maybe you could try with the master on about seven in the preamp down a little bit
Which of these 80s 800s one should try to find and how do you separate the better ones. At least inputs and 1 channel etc were some of the factors. Cheers!
As usual mate, top video. After I watched it I just couldn't help grab a guitar and belt some tunes out. Love your work man.
Yay for the yay-cm 800! Seriously, you had me at first riff. Killer stuff.
Thanks JB! :-)

@@JohanSegeborn You're Welcome! You have amazing tone man
The only amp I’ve ever gigged with since 1995. Love the single channel 800s
The Jcm 2203 is so agressive , you just have to open the window to mowe your lawn !
Hahaha! Then my Missus would finally find some appreciation for my amps ;-)
LoL... maybe get a free haircut too!?!
So true!
My little Bichon Frise watched this with me, now he is a PIT BULL.

Did someone say “Bichon Frise”!

johan... Sounding more ACDC than ACDC!
Awesome amp. You should test out the JCM 800 Studio... I'd love to hear that baby!
That’s very kind man! We’ll do the Studio first chance we get, here on the channel!
All the studio's! Can't wait
That's exactly what I was going to post here I am dying to hear him demo the new studio series classic jcm 800
John, i had two of those babies and hoped they would be a low wattage version of the 2203/4s. They are not...Not at all
@@JohanSegeborn Yes please do the studio! Do you have a 2555 to test? That's like a hot-rod version of the 800!

I have an 81 and it's my second favorite amp, right after the BF 67 Super Reverb. Huge tone and earth shaking.
Sounds like pure rock n roll to me! The mighty 2203. Best sounding Marshalls ever made period, end of story!

we truly appreciate all the hard work you put into these videos. Everything is super bad ass.
Sounds glorious! Johan, you're the best rythm guitarist ever! Keep on rockin' man!
Thanks my friend
That gave me an eargasm, that was splendid. The bass and drums sounded great together with the guitar.
Thanks Ron! So good to hear that!
really great video showing how nice the 2203 sounds without any need to boost it. natural overdrive is best
i love it, this one gave me the chills, one of my favorite Marshall tones, all that late 70's early eighties AC/DC /Judas Priest tone came rushing back!
TRUE LOVE for that drums you uses in tour videos... True love for that incredible sounds.
Thanks David, great to hear that!

Heeeellllll yeah.
Oh God what a sound you got right here, Johan !
