My useless knowledge of the Smashing Pumpkins finally is useful. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was recorded almost entirely on a Marshall JMP-1 rack mount pre-amp, on the OD1 setting, but Siamese Dream did use a JCM-800. It was modded to use KT-88 output tubes. Billy dimed the master, and use the pre-amp to set the level, getting it just below the cusp of breakup. That being said, the jcm-800 sure does that sound justice.
Corgan's 800 and the big muff were definitely used on MCIS as well as Siamese. As was a universe of pedals and preamps and guitars. The JMP-1 was used, yes, but "almost entirely" is definitely not accurate. There was a mountain of gear used on that record and while the JMP-1 was no doubt a part of it, so were a lot of other things.
@@jamiewoodard4293 get you a Les Paul, a DS1 (yes, I know it was a super distortion feedbacker but the distortion circuit in that is a DS1) an Orange OR120 and an Ampeg V4 running 7027s and you’re set.

In the Meantime by Spacehog is such a "Good vibes" type of song. Another quality demo of a product worthy of the praise it gets considering it's history in 90's rock. And lol @ the suggestion about the Smashing Pumpkins. It's true though. I had one and would catch myself playing "Smashing Pumpkins-style" riffs often.
Thanks so much Josh! Yeah, I'm definitely guilty of it! Sometimes when you have that classic sound you've heard a million times at your fingertips, it's easy to just want to play those classic riffs vs finding your own voice. Appreciate the kind words and hope you're well.
Spacehog !!!!! I was in Middle school when that song came out, never forget having my FM radio wake me up at 6am and that song started from the beginning right then. I laid in bed and just listened to the whole thing and have loved it ever since!!!!
That's awesome! I know those AM alarm tunes all too well. I have such a strong association of "Been Caught Stealing" by Janes Addiction as the "Oh shit, gotta go to school" song. Good times. 👍
You played Hum! Dude great song choice, I was not expecting I'd like your hair long on here, usually it's stars if Hum ever gets mentioned. Anyways bro the tone for all the songs were on point man, great video, earned a sub and a like :)
Same for the big muff. I got an original "Civil war" grey/blue when they were new 1992 or 93 range. Traded it later towards a crappy MTB. :) Have had a tall font Green Russian big muff for quite some time after that first one. Cool you're still using your first two EH.
Pretty sure that was the combo most of those songs were recorded with. I know Billy Corgan used that exact combo for Gish and Siamese Dream. JCM800s were everywhere in the 90s, and they were pretty low gain so using a boost or a fuzz pedal was common back then. And the Big Muff was really popular back then.
Dang. I've had my big Big Muff in its box for a year, just because i don't have room on my board for it. You're inspiring me to _whip it out._ Sounds glorious. Crazy, how your clean tone is so clean, and the pedal does all that work. // This is one of those rare inspiring pedal videos where i don't have to spend any money! Wicked.
Great sounds! I have a 800 and almost always use the low input….and a 1978 OpAmp or 1981 transistor Big Muff. Both are great. The high input, with a pedal boosting it, is great for Thrash.
Hell yeah! New video! And it's another great winner with information and tones!! Thank you and hope all is well! I forgot to mention how badass that modded strat is.. love the red..🤘🏼

Great video, man. Love the 90s sounds in there. Totally agree with your sentiments on the wall of sound from fuzzes (just got a hizumitas and a shigeharu), and couldn’t have said it better when you said they make you play by their rules. It’s like you are playing the pedal in addition to playing the guitar. Cheers!
Solid video. I recently discovered the beauty that is the low input of my jcm 800 and using a TS9 to get my favorite tones. Don't even go back to my high input nowadays.
That hum clip sounds very close to the recorded tone. Think they were using clean hiwatt and orange amps with various fuzz/distortion pedals but what you did there was pretty darn close. Would love to hear some sounds from Downward is Heavenward too.
We don’t get to see all the other stuff they running through, you can bet it’s not guitar straight into amp. He worked hours on hours to get these sounds this perfect
Fireball Ministry! That's the tone dude. I've got a Way huge Swollen Pickle for Muff style "riff thickening" which is magic if you want a little more control than the Muff.
I believe I read somewhere that Ronnie Montrose was using a Ram’s Head or Triangle era muff with a Plexi back in the day. He had some pretty killer tone.
Wow, I never managed to enjoy the Big Muff... but I never tried it in the Low input. Now that I'm using my JCM800 combo on the low input as a pedal amp for small gigs, I may just have to get a new Big Muff on my board!
I had a muff like that but with the other knobs! Great pedal, but I sold it because I was after that Op Amp tone like the one Billy used. The ones like ours rock, and you're right, it does make you play by its rules! I too found it hard to bond with them live, as did BC, but man after watching this I might have to go ahead and get that more SP-esque model for doing Hum and Pumpkins covers...keep up the good work!
What a way to end the video with another pumpkins like song.... its actually called I'd like your hair long by HUM. They too came from Illinois like the Pumpkins, and they sounded pretty similar, but with an actually hardcore edge. Definitely check em out, they influence Deftones to make be quiet and drive.
90s kicks ass! Yeah crazy how on the low channel you got close to the machine head rhythm. I believe Gavin used Expandora distortion and rhythm definitely a big muff! Loving this channel more and more.

Amazing tones in this vid! Please do a mix breakdown of this because I find fuzzed out guitars are so hard to mix. They’re either uncontrollably inaudible or so scooped that they get lost in my mixes. But yours sound great!
