My grandfather introduced me to Jimmie Rodgers' music. My father introduced me to the music of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and Waylon Jennings. One day, I will introduce my son to the music of Sturgill Simpson.
I don't think I have ever seen any performance where there are so many obvious influences coming through in the performance. I know he is singing covers but singing a Nirvana song like he is George Jones. One minute I'm seeing Stevie Ray Vaughn and minute later it's Stevie Wonder, it's Neil Dimond then it's George Straight and Waylon Jennings then Otis Redding but in the end it's all Sturgill. Got to love it.
This Man is freaking AWESOME! had can do it all! Love his spin on covers, he does it his way. And his original are definitely beyond radio worthy....most underrated artist ever, like I said AWESOME!!!
He played our State Fair, we couldn’t get tickets so we went outside the fences and danced through his whole set…could barely see any flashes of the show, but it is still one of my all time favorite memories of a concert I’ve attended :))
What a beautiful memory. I actually got envious. I think dancing outside the fence with y'all would have been almost better than being inside. That is a wonderful image of pure love of music. Gave my kids goosebumps!
so many things that I love about Sturgill - his song writing, his honesty and openness, the blend and mix of sounds but a performance like this makes it clear just how amazing his voice is!
The worst thing Rona ever did to me (yet) was cancel that Simpson/Childers show I had tickets for earlier this year. I’m crushed. I might not get to see them together and I won’t get to see Sound and Fury.
@@nikopoa6555 Same. DC shutdown the week of his show in DC. I have a huge FOMO on that album and the tour itself. I know people who hated his album and left after he called them "Yeti Coolers" but that album was one of my favorites. The bluegrass album is a good cut, but Sound and Fury and the way he plays his older stuff during that tour is my favorite.
@@codyadkins9241 and @Niko Poa We saw them in Atlanta which was one of the last shows they did before canceling the tour. Tyler absolutely killed it, can't say a bad word about his performance. Sturgill I was less pumped on. As much as I love Sturgill, the Rock & Roll Sturgill is my least favorite variant. It was a good show, but there was a lot of jam banding business and it was SOOOOO loud, you could barely hear him. That said, I absolutely love the new bluegrass album, it's about all I've listened to since it came out, can't wait for the 2nd one!!!
My man, Waylon, Conway, even a bit of Elvis. I’ve been hooked since I first heard the brewery sessions. Hope to see you in CO sometime- FYI, Las Calonias in Grand Junction is a sweet outdoor venue.
Probably the best Sturgil Simpson live show to date period ! I've been listening ever since Sunday Valley days and man they had some killer shows so look em up . As for myself it just dont get no better and son keep em comin , the bluegrass album is killer as well . Sure hope your polywog is growin strong and true and may you and your family be blessed . Peace to all who come here cause it sure is some strange ass shit we livin in but and I do mean but when I listen to this I just dont pay it no attention , rock em brother !!!
When the music starts goin more on Breakers Roar and sturgill does a little foxy dance move, it just makes me smile! Such a great, great album! Played it in my car exclusively for over 6 months.
these guys are not singing or even playing music... they are EMBODYING the FEELING of music.. THIS is what separates them from 'good' to GREATNESS. just look at their timing. crescendo to decrescendo. they are 'lost in the sauce' as some call it... what a beautiful performance.. excellent album. excellent musicianship. such underrated, such authentic artists. if only you knew HALF the backstory to these lyrics.
I'm not a country fan, per say, kinda like rap. Only a few break into my lineup. I love rock n roll/ blues. SRV, Joe Bonamassa, up beat blues lol. Sturgil went to the top of everything!
Sturgill can do anything man, he’s like the Superman of music. The guy transcends country and could do just about anything except maybe rap and make it kill. Hell, he could probably rap too, lol
He did funk, soul and R&B (Original, not new school), I mean, he probably COULD rap. He just really doesn't have to. He can do it all, clearly. You said it, Superman, it's just intense to behold. Then after this he did the bluegrass album, which just completely kills. Then you hear him talk and he's just a real dude. Down to Earth, not at all pretentious. You only get one of these a generation, IF you're lucky, bless it.
That whole verse is my favorite on the album and most relatable, for me, of any verse I’ve ever heard. Crazy song writing that can only be written from experience!
36:18 Love the moment when the guy on sax is swinging his finger to gesture sturgill to turn around and face the mic, then sturgill has that face of "shit!" He is so immersed in the riff he almost forgot to sing the last line😂😂😂
Insanely talented artist and holy shit the band is TIGHT. I'd like to take this comment to give some props to the drummer and the horn section. They really nail it, make it sound and look so easy!
I found out about Sturgill Simpson from Andrew at The Western Side in his video highlighting today's traditional country western singers. I look forward to listening to this album. He reminds me of Waylon Jennings.
Well while I was stressed the heck out raising my son a rare as hell genius far better than Haggard Jones Cash Willie or Williams could ever be was making songs. I make no understatement when I say the guy is my all time favorite artist and I doubt anyone will take that place in my life time. Even his "God awful" sin album which I hate that freaking sound (it is sin, perfectly represents) is good. Bless the man and his God given talent. Seems to be gettin thru the rough part of life.
I showed this vid to a co-worker who never heard of Sturgill before. She commented he sounds a lot like Van Morrison. I never really thought of it but that's a fair and accurate comparison.

Criminally underrated artist.

I've never seen a more appropriate description of Sturgill, until now.
Agreed, but selfishly I appreciate it. Seems the more mainstream the artist becomes the less I enjoy.
I can't get enough Sturge. Let him sing country, rock, or bluegrass. It's all good.
I agree .. Can listen to him continuously . Gotta say he just does something to me..... And I love it
Even funk and electronic music like some tracks on Sound and Fury. This man is a Swiss Army knife of genre.
