Sturgill is my new addiction, I just can’t quit! I am thoroughly hooked!!
That's some of the very best guitar playing I've ever heard.
Good god, this is country music for the first time in 25 years!
+Victor Edwards At the same time, a well rounded artist that can draw in both new and old regarding preference taste. Ear candy, if you will.
I agree with you I agree with you I agree with you but I don't hear him on the radio round here I'm up here in Maine
Longer than that, just my opinion.
Jamey Johnson
No doubt him and Tyler Childress are bringing it back.Notice no skinny jeans lol
Someone should write a book. " How Sturgill Simpson single handedly saved country music " God Bless Kentucky & God Bless Sturgill Simpson !!!!
No sir you forgot Cody Jinks and Jamie Johnson
@@b.csplatbriancross7062
Creed Fisher,
Mickey Lamantia
Whitey Morgan and the 78s
Cody Jinks
Casper Mcwade
Billy Strings
Jamey Johnson
(Just to name a few) a lot of singers and bands are starting to save country music, most of which are located in the Texas Country music scene :)
@@b.csplatbriancross7062 you're crazy Cody Jinks is cringe as hell
Can we just take a moment to appreciate KEXP? Their videos sound amazing and look the part. They’re the best at what they do.
'Audiotree' is also a good one to watch... 😉
Agreed! Amazing production.
Lefty would enjoy his music
WOW ! Thank You KEXP ! They are the Best!! What a moment they captured....
Too much censorship.
Legit American Roots Music. Killer playing and singing and writing. Simultaneously simple and complex.
There are a lot of Country artists who should be embarrassed by their success after hearing this guy. The Real Deal.
yuppp, that's why they don't embrace him ;)
Great comment
You said it partner.
Agreed except for you calling them "artist" more like posers
Absolutely this man is pure talent.
This LEGEND....needs to make a Return!!!!
The tele player's string control using slide is next level
If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes you wouldn't've been able to convince me that wasn't a pedal steel. I'm impressed.
Let's hear a little more of Sturgill and Jamey Johnson on the radio and I just might get a little respect back for Nashville! This is where goosebumps come from. Nothing but emotion! Mr. Simpson is always taking me to a place, whether it's his song or a cover! Thanks for sharing this. The world needs to know Sturgill Simpson!
I am with you Darrel,,,,,stumbled upon Sturgill few months ago when he opened for Dwight Yoakam,,,,,he and Jamey are just a couple of the handful of artists that might be able to fill the shoes of the GREATS!
DO NOT FORGET CODY JINKS!!!
@@tradguy71 don't forget Cody Jinks!!!
This is my favorite Sturgill line up, Lil Joe is such a phenomenal player
i wished he recorded "i never go around mirrors" this cover is so damn good!
That Telecaster player is Laur Joamets from Estonia. He is a wizard.
stratman2k That's some Jedi level Tele-steel.
stratman2k I could see him in a wizard hat.
stratman2k He's is excellent!
+ernesto 67 Wait, a white dude playing traditional American folk music is somehow a slap in the face to those people from whose tradition the very same folk music was born? I'm neither fascists, nor racist, but I am a white Southern man and I don't feel like I've been slapped in the face at all. In fact, I take it as quite the compliment that a man from so very far away would see the value and worthiness in the music of my ancestors. Thank you, Laur, you do it as well any of the legends. Bravo!
Mitch hedberg on the telecaster.
I don't know where this guy is from but there's no doubt that he's the real deal. I listen to country music stations every day. I don't understand why Mr. Simpson is not given more air play. He's better than most other artists being played today.
Because Nashville only wants to push a bunch of sellout's that will play the music they make them play which is none the less , straight up garbage
he's more or less from Versailles, KY
also..at about 9:20 or so he tells ya his onionin of the Nashville music scene
Ill say it for what it is... the music industry cant figure out how to market him to urban blacks
well… he’s never found it necessary to play “the game”…but he’s not gone away… just climbing his own route … may take time but he WILL have his day…
Also Laur….
I think that may be the best slide playing I have heard.
This guy is the real deal, and needs more exposure. I bought his albums and they're great!
You were proven right
Even more so now since his last few projects. Unbelievable
I Never Go Around Mirrors is my all-time fave sad country song. Takes the cake in my eyes. So grateful Sturg covered it up in the PNW at KEXP
He's an excellent guitar player. Love his music. Get goose pump just listening to him.
This is so beautifully produced! And Sturgill is a superstar.
this is my first and only review. I took the time to log in drunk at midnight.... best combo of sturgi/interview. BEST EVER
Behold the New Millennium's God of Outlaw Psych. Gram Parsons would be so stoked.
And Sideman Laur is the sheeee-it, brother....RESPECT!!!
He and Chris Stapleton are hands down the most talented performers regardless of genre in the world today. Both are not only incredible singers but amazing song writers and entertaining performers. This coming from someone who refuses to listen to "country music" or at least what it has become since Cash, Waylon, Willie etc. Hope they both continue for years to come.
I know its been said but that lead player is a GOD
Crazy how Sturgill is probably unknown among most country fans, but they can all tell you who Rascal Flatts (or some other related crap) is. This band is 100000000x better than 99% of most modern day "country."
I agree Sir,These guys make music..not some computer generated "country crap" like most do in Nashville these days.
Damn skippy! I thought I got transported back to '76 for a minute. I hope he keeps at it, and inspires more *real* singer/songwriters of the real country to get out there. We need about 4-5 of these New Outlaws. It's real, it's raw - it ain't about the money, it's about the heart. About time, and thank God!
AMEN BROTHER! THERES A BUNCH OF REALLY GOOD UNDERGROUND COUNTRY OUT THERE.. JUST GOTTA KNOW WHERE TO LOOK - CHECK OUT BB PALMER - HES OUT OF AL, DIFF. SOUND BUT COUNTRY ALL IN ALL
Keith Moreity It's a shame what Nashville has done to modern day "country" music!!!
was expecting a comment like this- modern country aint bad this country aint bad its just a matter a taste, totally different styles, whatever floats your boat, just enjoy the music..
that is some brilliant slide playing
Just heard Sturgill for the first time this last weekend. He's fantastic. We need more artists like him and Jamey Johnson and less of all the pop country stuff.
And Cody Jinks!!!!!!!!!!
Wow! We need more of this! I quit listening to mainstream country music years ago because it wasn’t country music. This is so refreshing!!
Probably not the standard cup of tea for most KEXP fans but he (and the band) is fantastic and a rare traditional country voice. Good on you, KEXP, for sharing this. Someone keep an eye on that drummer, he's a madman lol
MADMAN to be sure! ,,,, that's funny shit!
This interviewer is a thundering dolt! And what's with the constant skin scratching deal....see an epidermic doc and have that issue addressed.
As for Sturgill and his band WOW! Quality goods through and through!
what a breath of fresh air on the Country/Roots scene.
keep up the great work Sturgill ( the way that you did with Metamodern Sounds In Country Music,,,, a SUPERB ALBUM!)
400OTD
Amazing! Thanks for sharing something out of your usual style.. Great old school outlaw country. The guitarist is amazing
Strangely, I just discovered SS only a couple of months ago. I am thoroughly obsessed!
Me too, I'm very disappointed in myself!!😂
The slide part on I Never Go Around Mirrors, played by Mr. Jaur Joamets, is so beautiful. That's the closest I've ever heard a slide guitarist sound like a pedal steel without using a B-Bender.
Laur
Wow, my 8 year old daughter just turned me onto Sturgill..."daddy, listen to this, it has guitars". I'm raising her right!
holy hell i need me a daughter
kuhchicken I hope my daughter is that way. I'm doing all I can to show her real music and not the bullshit on the radio. she's only 3 so we'll see in time.
We do not believe in the veracity of your claim. Little girls can't even hear Sturgill, they are deaf to his charms. Liar.
Nice work, dad!
I teared up a little to this. what a gem!
This is the real deal. Damn...takes me back to honest to good C&W from when I was a kid in the 60's.
When I play Sturgill for friends and family the reaction is always the same... "WOW!".... I enjoy this a great deal...
Good country is finally back!
ya if only they would play it
This man is the bomb. Psycadelic Outlaw Country Baddass......
This could be my favorite Sturgill concert. And the best band line up too.
the guitarist is out of this world! enjoyed this thoroughly, from start to grand ending!
Can’t stop coming back Lmao
That is some Jedi level Tele slide!
I saw them live at the Taft Theater in Cincinnati, and I swear dude made that Tele sound like a lap steel.
Sturgill You and Boys just keep taking it a step up every time. And this was five years ago.
Let's just say that someone couldn't understand what he was saying.... Your gonna feel what he's saying! These dudes are awesome! Thank you for that real country! That real country that should be on the radio! I love this stuff!
sturgill Simpson is absolutely amazing I'm not sure why he's not a big time star he definitely deserves to be..he'll make it an if they let him get away that would be crazy...he's one of the best love this guy😊the 👑 of country on day💿🎸🎼🎶🎧🎤🎹🎺🎻💰✌💙
Nashville can be a difficult place for new styles and talents, there is a long list of great country artist that were never accepted by the Nashville machine but great talent almost always shines through in the end.
It's amazing how an old sound can come along and sound new...and all the sudden make the new sounding artists sound dated.
Jamie Laszlo Most are following the money and the current trends - and these practices become traditions - and that results in 'artists' not straying very far from what's already been recently successful. The difference between good leaders like Sturgill and followers is that leaders learn a thing or two from history, while followers tend to repeat. That's my pet theory, anyhow.
Great insightful post. btw!
That’s deep
Such a pro with the start and finish of songs. It really shows the work put into these songs by the band.
Great musician. A new breed of singer/songwriter....love it.
I love when an artist comes along and plays just the right chords along with just the right lyrics and touches me in just the right place. SALUTE STURGILL SIMPSON, I love you,
The REAL deal. So great to hear authentic country music!
2020 strong still
Still one of most brillant performances ever!
He is one hell of a singer
Anything by Sturgill is gold!
Holy Shit!! All of them outstanding.
old timey sound never gets old to me. its about time
Hands down the best performer out right now. His band is tight as hell. It's refreshing to hear such a great voice pair d with the ability to write amazing songs.
best music today greets from holland
How Country music should have evolved. He's one of the only Country singers alive now a day that does the genre good.
not quite my friend! their a ton of of em.. they just dont get any radio play so know one knows ab em... BB Palmer, Jason Isbell, Andrew Combs.. just for starters, all good current country players and writers, who get little respect for their ability to rip you heart out, check them out - take care man.
Love the slide playing in this.
That voice is incredible. So is Sturgill's.
LOVE LOVE LOVE me so Sturgill! Saw him in Houston a few months ago for the first time live. Venue was great! Sturgill was awesome! Can't ask for much more!
KEXP... you have an annoying habit of jumping all over the place and cutting away from the soloist when he is ripping it up. You should find a nice angle that shows the hands of the soloist and try to stay on that during solos and interesting breaks. If you folks are in the music business, your editors should know enough about music to identify those sections of the performances. Just a friendly suggestion.
Why they even have cameras for a radio-based recording session is beyond me, that might explain the all-over-the-place video.
AndyRGuitarGuy You are correct, sir.
+AndyRGuitarGuy THIS! Always this. How am I supposed to steal all these kickass moves from Laur if I cannot see the kickass moves?!
AMEN!
Sturgill Simpson is not the only one you've got Chris Stapleton, Whitey Morgan and the 78s, Colter Wall, Benjamin Todd and many others.... Old school country music is back and it's awesome!!!
Damn.... This is amazing and it's new. Thank you PowerfulJRE for having this guy on your show. I can only hope he has a show in Florida soon.
PowerfulJRE brought me here. +1
This is heart and substance. Gets me 'unthinking' ...really perfect imo...and I love it.
I'm here because of Merle. This guy kicks ass. Sounds a lot like Waylon.
+Chris Pudsey For sure!!!
I was thinking exactly the same thing.
I get a strong waylon vibe from sturgill.. Which is a huge compliment obviously
Who knew Kenny Banya worked for KEXP? That's gold, Sturgill, gold!
In 30 years as a guitar player I have never seen such a handsome and capable Drummer. Does that sound weird? :) The whole band is extraordinary. Much Love from Switzerland.
That lead guitar is SLAYING it
Sturgill is the real deal! Thanks for sharing.
I listened to this guy for the first time yesterday. He's pretty sweet. Kind reminds me of Dwight Yoakam and Waylon Jennings. His guitar playing is really good
Love this thanks for posting
Keith Whitley, Dwight and a lot of Waylon Nice mixture of solid country music. It is about time. Thank you
Making lefty and Merle proud
You know it's good when shivers travel up your spine.
Love this set. Got both his albums - first album is the style of Waylon but second has some weird and wonderful tracks. He seems keen to avoid the country label, no doubt he doesn't want to be compared with Nashville (which he mentions on this recording - he just lives there). Perhaps he'd feel more at home in East Nashville or Austin.
He'll be on the Grammys on Sunday. Saw him live in D.C. Greatest show I've seen
Awesome, true country music at its best, music as it should be, great lyrics and exceptional voice, all what the country genre stands for.
"HOLLYWOOD DARLING,...HOLLYWOOD❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤Your a kind interviewer. THANK YOU FOR SHARING ❤
Holy Crap!!!! Outstanding. All of them!!
Laur can play a banjo part on electric guitar, amazing! (2nd song, Poor Rambler)
Thank you Struggle keep playing this way.
Love this guy!!
he is country he brought it back the way it should be...keep it up your great sturgill Simpson..love your sound
Never heard of this guy til today. Really good!
I was just like man, I bet this dude played KEXP, and boom here it is. Sturgill is amazing.
First time listen.No wonder J.P .loved you.beautiful!
Absolutely amazing.
Kentucky produces great musicians and Bourbon….something in the water there!
'Just take a lot of psychedelics and see what happens"! Sturgill is one of a kind!
Ol' Sturge was BLISTERED during this performance!
Talent like this comes along in a small handful, once in a generation.
Simply the best artist in the music business today (and I’m a metal fan).
Who in the hell are the people that do not like this? I am seriously asking..and why?
kareliaback I'd chalk it up to a genetic misfire of sorts. A mutagenic impediment, so to speak. ;-)
+kareliaback i like metal and techno...but this guy trancends all that divisionary bullshit. music should be spiritual in the non denominational way. listenin to strugil is better than church
I totally agree, ilike metal and techno too just bought tickets to Kraftwerk, here in Stockholm 31/7 this summer :D
ahhhhh! im sooo jelous
Easy answer is they weren't raised right, haters got to hate
That Estonian dude has some smooth licks! Thanks, Laur...
Love never leaves.
Sturgill Simpson: This boy has paid his dues and deserves all the attention he gets. No awards from the Country Music Association because he is not bowing to the old-heads, but he received a grownup people award, a Grammy for the best country album, 2017.
Remember Folks, "The 'Country' in country music is America." That's right, this is OUR music and Sturgill Simpson belongs to US.
I know I won’t miss your show when you come around
His resting face is; “fondly thinking of a wild experience that I shouldn’t share on the air.”
i hate to put a new name on this guy,but waylon jennings comes to mind.
honest, real, good ole country music.thank you SIR.
I was having a shitt- day, and THANK GOD ,great unterviewer,,great band❤
