For an 80s guy from northeast city who listened to everything but country, Sturgill and a few others transcend the traditional perceptions of "country" music for people like myself... and have cemented themselves as brilliant story-tellers and pure craftsmen of guitar playing. No genre can contain this legend. Great interview
Me exactly. Other than Johnny Cash I hated country. My son in law got me into Ryan Bingham and that led me to Sturgil and Colter Wall. Who else should I be listening to?
"- this young man came up to me after a show and said, “after all this time, I think it’s great that you never sold out.” I didn’t have the heart to tell him that nobody had ever asked me to." - Ray Wylie Hubbard
Honestly it has been 20 years since I have wanted to actually buy an album, this guy is so talented he makes me want to buy his albums. The songs are so epic.
So refreshing to see a musician blend country, rock, psychedelic, and soul music all in one. I just saw his show a couple days ago and it was probably my favorite concert I’ve ever been too
After seeing him live a couple days ago for the first time with my step dad (who introduced me to music) I can say I never have seen a live performance that has matched that level of energy and quality. It was a special night. I won’t ever forget it. I knew it was gonna be good but that was a mind blowing experience.
I hear ya. I only learned about this guy last October and have been going through some things so it feels very poetic to be able to see him for the first time in Chicago on October. Didn't anticipate a tour ever again, let alone a new album, so suffice it to say I'm pretty amped
I had always casually listened to Sturgill, but it wasn’t until my mom passed away in 2021 that I really dove in. He really helped me get through some of the toughest moments of my life. Thank you
This guy is unapologetically authentic and there's something so admirable in that. The new album is also some of his best work. Looking forward to seeing him perform the new songs live.
We just flew from so cal to Oregon to see him in Bend. Best money ever spent! They played for almost 3 hours straight! Came on at 7pm on the dot. Amazing group of musicians! Spend the money YOLO ❤ it was magical.
This is awesome and so informative. Thank you, Sturgill for letting us get to know you. I would love to meet you when you come to Salt Lake next month. I'm not a musician but I think him and I are real similar. I look foward to years of Johnny Blue Skies!
Man I cannot get enough of Sturgils music so much talent and debth to His songs. It's a journey and ride rolling along with his music thanks for keeping the music coming, please come out to Tucson. You are the best
okay I didn't know there was a new record. I am 2 songs and this thing already rocks. absolutely stunning mix. what more do you want...first and foremost, good songs. executed by good players, in a good studio with good gear, engineered and mixed by good guys. would not change a thing.
If you really wanna hear someone that sounds like a young Waylen.... Give his son Shooter Jennings a listen. He has done a modern spin on some of his dad's old tunes plus he has a ton of great original songs that actually sound like country!
@@ssconverrespectfully disagree as I don't think shooter sounds at all like his dad and doesn't have much of a voice, which really surprised me as both parents can sing.
Honestly thought he retired until my friend drove two hours north to see him live last week in OKC. So my man is still going and I've only "known" him for a little more than a decade.
The most impressive thing about this man is he could be the one the biggest artists/musicians on the planet and easily become an all time legend but he has no desire for any of that. For die hard fans like myself its what i love about him and also hate about him. Just listen to his old band Sunday Valley if you want proof.
Few people can do that without selling their soul. It used to be a going concern for many artists not to sell out, compromise, trade their soul for loot. These days it seems to be a badge of honor to turn yourself into a shill for all those damn vacuous, tawdry, vapid corporations.
The first time I discovered Sturgill was when he was interviewed and played with John Prine. John has a lot of talented young musicians around him, because they recognized his greatness if a songwriter and beautiful soul. Tyler Childers and Kacey Musgraves were also his disciples.
First, what is that tshirt? I love what he brings in his music and how he approaches everything. Just so special to me and many of the rest of us here.
T-shirt says something like, " It used to he 'Wine, Women, and Song' - Now it's Beer, The Ol' Lady, and TV!" My all time favorite beer-joint, Joe and Adeline's Beer Garden, used to have similar posters and calendars on the wall 🤣😍 Or, "Everyone should believe in Something - I believe I'll have another round!" I agree whole-heartedly with you!!! He is unlike anyone else!!!
I’ve always loved your music man. Really dig how you got into acting and you were great in Killers of the Flower Moon. The Righteous Gemstones character was funny as shit too.
Thank you for staying true to the art that is real music. Do you dad, there’s many that count on those of you left. We hate the mainstream and selling your soul for fame and fortune. I keep telling people the analog world was the only real stuffs and that digital is an illusion and will never beat it. Best to you sir. Love an old soul……

If you haven't seen Sturgill live, catch the Why Not? Tour... 3 hours long and one of the best shows I've ever seen ❤
So easy to root for people who are themselves. Sturgill is a real dude. He'll never sell out to the machine
Make art not friends!!!
What does that even mean?
He sold out for covid and started supporting the war machine but hopefully his fans have taught him to be better now
"- this young man came up to me after a show and said, “after all this time, I think it’s great that you never sold out.”
I didn’t have the heart to tell him that nobody had ever asked me to." - Ray Wylie Hubbard
Actually he’s Johnny Blue Skies now not himself 😅😂
I just wish Sturgill and Billy Strings would get together and make an album. The World really could use it!!!
Now that would be epic
Maybe Sturgill, Billy, and Jason Isbell.
@@dwellingswing1whoa now - we want to leave reality intact
Add Cody Jinks to that bill.
Way past reality asking for sturgil to do anything with anyone
I don't give a flying f*ck what he calls himself, I'm just so damn happy to hear him singing again!!
Amen!!!
Hells yeah
Same, he’s so good underrated by Nashville.
Shhh, please don’t spook him! I’m worried we might not hear much from him if we make too big a deal out of this 😂
Truer words were never spoken
Pleeeease.....
Like a feral cat you are trying lure out from under the porch.
❤️❤️❤️😂
So correct!!

This man shreds for 3.5 hours-nonstop, I saw him twice in the last two months.. JBS /Sturg never disappoints. Walk away with my mind blown every time.
This was so good. Sturgill has been an emotional support vessel for me. Seeing him in Chicago. Second time...can't wait.
enjoy the ride, my friend
I hear ya. I only learned about this guy last October and have been going through some things so it feels very poetic to be able to see him for the first time in Chicago on October. Didn't anticipate a tour ever again, let alone a new album, so suffice it to say I'm pretty amped
Emotional support vessel… that’s how I’m describing him from now on!
See you there!
So are we! Can't wait ❤
I think one of the biggest blessings of my life is that I get to see him live in November with my mom. His music is a gift. He is a gift
This was so great. I've loved Sturgills music since I first heard it in 2015. The guy is so real and rare.
The new album is fantastic
Best voice in music today.
Has pipes like Waylon
I had always casually listened to Sturgill, but it wasn’t until my mom passed away in 2021 that I really dove in. He really helped me get through some of the toughest moments of my life. Thank you
Same my wife of 20yrs passed for cancer in 2022. And what a find of talent 🎉
Ugh I love this man more than words can say. He’s gotten me through so much. Bless your voice, bless your brain, bless your soul 🫶🤘
Well said, friend!! Abso-freakin-lutely!!!
Instant classic. Soulful and pure...
Soooo much soul and purity
his new album is stellar
my first exposure to music was on one of those TV/Stereo Consoles too then I got a 8 track/turntable/radio combo of my own for christmas.
Fantastic interview. Love the new album.
And God, I hope he had a great rest of that press day high as giraffe balls.
Great interview. Glad to hear some of the backstory on the new album. Even more glad to hear that he seems committed to making more music.
My buddy Dave is the bartender that started calling him that. You can check him out at Rosebuds in Lexington, KY. Everyone loves Dave.
Great comment. We all wanted to know. Cool.
That was as satisfying as listening to a sturgill album
Well done!!
I love Sturgill Simpsons music & guitar picking.
This has made my entire year. To know he is writing and singing again. He is so incredibly talented and I absolutely love him!!!
Amazing musician, I’ve been listening to him since 2014. Can’t wait to see you in Huntington WV. I had to work when you came to NC.
Turtles freed me and Sturgill led me to see John prine at radio city.
What a healer.
I can’t wait to see him at ACL. I literally jumped on those tickets day 1. Life fulfilled.
Bless you Sturgill. Cheers from the South Carolina Lowcountry.
New album is a masterpiece
Music is so good! And I thought I was prepared for this interview…But man…I had no idea! I think you totally rocked! Love Sturg and Johnny Blue Skies
This guy is unapologetically authentic and there's something so admirable in that. The new album is also some of his best work. Looking forward to seeing him perform the new songs live.
Sturgill with the truth and big shout out to production and cinematography on this.
Probably the only artist I would spend my money, time and energy to see live!
That's saying something
I have tickets to see him for the first time next month. To say that I am excited is an understatement.
We just flew from so cal to Oregon to see him in Bend. Best money ever spent! They played for almost 3 hours straight! Came on at 7pm on the dot. Amazing group of musicians! Spend the money YOLO ❤ it was magical.
"it's not about charts or sales" cannot even express how much I love hearing that
Thank you Sturgill for continuing to gift us with your truly unique unquestionably legendary talent. ❤
Great interview, thank you for sharing it.
Excellent interview! Keep doing your thing, Sturgill!
He reminds me of what country/music used to be, he has that old soul feel.
Excellent interview.
The new album is amazing I am glad he put out some new music
The first Time I listened to the new album I loved it instantly.
This is awesome and so informative. Thank you, Sturgill for letting us get to know you. I would love to meet you when you come to Salt Lake next month. I'm not a musician but I think him and I are real similar. I look foward to years of Johnny Blue Skies!
This is the best thing I've ever watched on RUclips. Really great questions. I feel sorry for people who don't supplement their lives with Sturgil
Sailors Guide is one of the best albums and has some of the coolest album artwork.
I love his music. Beautiful lyrics and the blending of genres amazes me. Love love love the new album.❤
Man I cannot get enough of Sturgils music so much talent and debth to His songs. It's a journey and ride rolling along with his music thanks for keeping the music coming, please come out to Tucson. You are the best
I’m still appreciative of dood ..
I LOVE DOOD SO MUCH
"Sam" is amazing.
He left the varnish off his words…. Feared no beast or man
No compliment the man ,he has done something with music that I have ever seen and it's real
okay I didn't know there was a new record. I am 2 songs and this thing already rocks. absolutely stunning mix. what more do you want...first and foremost, good songs. executed by good players, in a good studio with good gear, engineered and mixed by good guys. would not change a thing.
Seeing him this Friday night in Nashville at Bridgestone arena!!!
Same! Will be my third of the tour. Huntsville, STL, now Nash. Very blessed
A damn classic. The sounds are pure. Gives me peace
The album is so good. 🔥
The new album is amazing! 🔥🔥
I have so much love for this man’s art.
Great interview, the background music was tough to listen to while trying to focus on his responses though.
Amazing interview! ❤
Best artist in 40 years! Cant wait to see him in Detroit.
We’ll be there as well. First time seeing him.
Who was the best 41 years ago?!
Hyperbole is okay when you’re enthusiastic about an artist. 😊
Good to see a neighbor representing back home the way he does. All love from laurel county
Sturgill fan from way back when. Bring Sunday Valley back please
Possibly his best album. Sturgill speaks to the soul of mankind.
...if only there were any evidence of mankind having souls...
He's a real one.
he's the real deal. inspiring to say the least
I enjoyed this interview - thanks.
4th grade = Van Halen concert
5th grade = knew what he came to do 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ indeed
Can’t wait for the new tour. Gonna be special.
Sturgill was the last show I saw before the big cough - March 2020…. I cannot wait to see him in October.
Proud to be from KY 💙
He's so talented!
Late for the sky Jackson Browne. One of my favorite albums of all time. Late for the sky my favorite song. I love a man that gets Jackson Browne.
this is absolutely fantastic! thank you.
Fantastic! Thank you.
Great interview with one of the greats of this era. How is the John Prine Porsche doin Sturgill?
Sturgill always reminds me of a young Waylon Jennings. Just love him and wish he got more airtime. Modern Country sucks sooooo hard.
The first time I heard Sturgill on the radio I actually thought it was Waylon! I said dang when did Waylon cover Nirvana lol.
If you really wanna hear someone that sounds like a young Waylen.... Give his son Shooter Jennings a listen. He has done a modern spin on some of his dad's old tunes plus he has a ton of great original songs that actually sound like country!

His voice ❤
Lovely interview.
I wish I could remember my childhood
Absolutely enjoy everything I have heard from him
My first 45 was Steely Dan first album was Kansas Point of No Return
Good go hear a musician talk as if he truly understands music and structure
First, what is that tshirt?
I love what he brings in his music and how he approaches everything. Just so special to me and many of the rest of us here.

I agree whole-heartedly with you!!! He is unlike anyone else!!!
I LOVE U STURGILL!!❤❤❤
I met Sturgill at an open mic in Salt Lake City at an Irish Bar in 2008 or early 2009.
Holy smokes, he saw Danny Gatton? Mad respect, keep on truckin' Johnny Blue Skies.
He didn't say he ever saw Danny Gatton, only that he admired his playing.
Oh wow!!! Dave from Lynaghs? That’s special! Looking forward to the Rupp Show in September!!!
One of the only true artists of this generation in my opinion
So awesome!!!! Thank you!!!!
His soul goes deep. Real Deep...
Best album yet by Sturgill
One of my first records was The Monkees also! Awesome!
Dude killed it Chicago!!!

You can't pigeon-hole Johnny Blue Skies. Very talented and down to earth gentleman.
❤the heart don't lie..it's a passion that will either die..or ignite
Great album! Back to front!
