Summary:
Recorded just over a year after Santana played its historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair performance, the band was fast becoming one of the biggest in the world. They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman."
A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the storied venue had just begun to experiment with staging contemporary concerts on their grounds. Staging a rock concert in a classical venue had yet to be done, so of course the concept of doing so excited Graham. He brought the full-scale Fillmore East production team in, including the Joshua Light Show, and booked a great lineup. This first concert featured B.B King, Jefferson Airplane and The Who, and drew the largest crowd that Tanglewood had ever seen by far.
Buoyed by the event's success, Tanglewood and Graham agreed to stage three similar dates in 1970. The last of these is this show, when Santana headlined after The Voices of East Harlem and the legendary Miles Davis had played (you can hear Mile's set here).
This historic and beautifully recorded performance features a smoking performance by Santana in the last year of their classic lineup, before a young Neal Schon joined the band. We think you'll agree it's an incredible performance by a great band in their prime. Видеоклипы

No pyrotechnics, no audio visual screens or special effects, just pure unadulterated music, played by musicians with passion and energy. This is how it is done kiddies.
OMG. NO kiddie today can touch this. VIRTUOSITY>
You also gotta mention the time, psychedelic being the new hype, hippie movement, music is the only thing keeping it together. The war n stuff. They all just got high n let the music guide them. But they also had the skills to chase the music. They had the skill and energy and talent to follow the music.

Greg Rollie started the band.. he is awesome with Santana. Love them both!
That’s what should make America Great!!! These days It is much better than the earlier generations, but it is changing for good! ❤❤❤❤❤

Of all the music videos I say I never get tired of watching, this is the neverest of them all.
Can't up vote this enough.
The transition from Savor to Jingo was incredible
There was no band like this before Santana, and no band will ever replace them. A unique band with superb musicians. Plus Carlos was always happy to take a backstep on stage and let the other band members shine. Carlos is and always has been one of the best musicians in rock music. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this.
He brought out the best in those that had small parts in the ensemble as well as larger ones. It was always about the love of great music!
You could see it in his eyes looking at another band member saying like... this is your time... play your heart out and give it your all! I miss music like this, that involved so many people on so many instruments. So many different parts... all working together perfectly. Awesome!

C'était les pionniers , After their , After Carlos they re many top group , his brother's group very nice MALO ,jorge Santana , ans very nice group CHANGO , CHANGO was a great great band. CHANGO psychedelic latino z great band
This is amazing... They were all cobected and felt free an they knoldgebt and their feelings. With true instruments, no autotune, just complicity wanted to break free
Fifty-three years later - still goosebumps!! Outstanding performance!
yes!!!goosebumps!
Oh, if we knew then what we were letting this world become, we would have sent Santana on a world peace mission ….

yes I have seen them numerous times.. and they are coming back this way again in August. just when I thought it might not happen after he took the Vegas residency gig I got a notification he was coming August 25th .. This particular song is so amazing when they do it and his wife just kicks ass! goosebumps is right when you hear all those instruments and artists blending so perfectly together.. man this generation thinks they know shit ,when the current musicians can pull off this sound without no help from computers and all that crap they use to make them sound like someone else I will be impressed, very few "old souls" in these young people today🎶🎼🎵🎼🎼🎶🎶🎵🎼🎵🎼
A mexican,a nicaraguan,a puerto rican and americans.. Thats why I Love this group.SANTANA is my ambassador of MUSIC✌❤
Poo ooooooooooopoop kk p
Music is universal to me. I don’t care what country you come from. World music! And I agree, he is an ambassador of music. Not too many can play a PRS guitar, although I think earlier was a fender( not sure)
@Jimmy Garcia I am blessed to have a neighbor from Puerto Rico, and 1 from Vietnam. And yes, Mexicans have given us so much. And yes, we all came from somewhere else unless native Americans.
Carlos is always magical. The bands he puts together are forces of Nature. I always feel spi r itually improved. That's my church.

These guys are just unbelievable. I can't think of anyone in the current era that even comes near to their talent.

Unreal!!! this is healing music...this world needs more Santana.
It feeds your soul! I drive uber and love when he comes on when I have a rider but as soon as they get out I blast it!

The drummer was so young at the time, he had Mad-Skillz way beyond his years.

The whole percussion section is incredible!

The only thing better than listening to Santana is watching them play.
Black, white and brown all working together, moving like an express train, without an ounce of pretension, just enjoying the moment.

Jose Chepito Areas is an amazing percussionist. He sure can get down on them timbales. As a drummer myself timbales are my favorite percussion instrument after the drums. A lot of Latin percussion instruments sound cool as hell. This is by far my favorite lineup and era of Santana. My uncle was from this era... grew up a teen in the early to mid 70s. When he was alive I always turned to him for music and Santana was always one of the bands he would turn me onto when I was growing up in the 90s. He passed away a few years ago and I was blessed with his entire record collection that he kept from his teenage years, and in the crate was literally every Santana record that was put out from the late 60s through the 70s. I feel so blessed to have his collection and even in death he continues to bless me w/ good music like Santana.
Awesome!
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing ❤
I saw them in Detroit when I was 16. They opened for the Rolling Stones. They rocked the house that night everyone's standing up dancing and singing the whole time they played. When the Stones came on everyone sat down. Santana wore us out. It was the best show I've ever seen.
Yeah I can imagine Mick saying damn we need to pay attention who we hired open up for us😂
@@danielmiller210 It happened before too, In a equal if not more epic performance . RUclips Rolling Stones followng James Brown Tami show . Stones had a front seat to the most Incredible perfomances by these two Perfomers and their bands.
Michael Shrieve was just 22 here. His drumming is one for the ages. One of the best. This line up of this band was the best I feel. They were raw and full of energy to make the big time. Their egos were still low. A bunch of friends making great music.
I think he was 21. Either way, he's just Awesome as hell. Play on young man... Let me dance. 🕺🏾
I was 22 in 1971 and Michael is a year older than me....to set the ages straight. I grew up playing drums at age 11 and in live bands at age 15 . In 1971 I graduated from college at UNC and I was just turning 23 in June of 1971. If it was a year earlier, that would put me at age 22 in 1970 and Michael at age 23. So, at Woodstock in 1969, exactly how old was Michael? I was 21 years old....and Michael was......? Do the math.
@@scottmoyer1357 a year here a year there does it matter? The "interplay" of this band was unequalled in those days. They are all on the same path playing there way up it to whatever bliss that came their way because of it. I can only say "beautiful" when I hear them.
@@jimlabos
It's true. This great group is very together. Their flow is family.
It was a very unique time between the early 1960s and mid 1970s for this type of music. I'm viewing it from the point of view of a San Fran Bay Arean though, bc I was there during those times.
@@swordoff7 I tried to get there but got stuck in Vancouver and then my sister got married and she wanted me there. Finally went there decades later. Loved that city and California. But yes very special times. Grateful to have lived during those wonderful decades.

Greg Rollie is one of the most underrated musicians EVER.

Him and santana made music.
Michael was the youngest and an excellent drummer
I like Greg's voice a lot, sets the tone for the classic songs he made and him playing the organ made it a nice touch.
Greg Rollie huge Bay Area landmark. Early Journey the best. This Santana phase no introduction needed
Now this is REAL MUSIC…..❤️❤️🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🙏🙏🙏🙏

Had the privilege of seeing the Santana band in Sydney in 1973. For some reason, security allowed me to watch front and center, from the stage apron. The house sound was blasting but from where I stood, I could hear they were playing barely above loungeroom levels. I could hear the musicians talking to each other. What a band!
Everyone just enjoying themselves, just bringing out each other’s talent, not outdoing each other, relaxed, no pressure, just equally loving the music...and it’s perfect.
Im British, i have never heard anything ever that is as powerful than this concert.

And just think, that was one song. Santana was a musical revolutionary. He's the one and only Latino to ever turn Latin music into rock and roll successfully that appeals to all audiences, and do it consistently throughout the decades, tweaking his sound as each musical era progressed. Pure genius.

Carlos Santana is one of music's great spirits, and he is a true warrior and a musical pioneer. I grew up listening to Santana and heard them in my hometown theater, which was the Capitol Theater in good ole' downtown Passaic, NJ. I heard the band in 1976 with the great Armando Perazza. Santana is incredible combination of Latin, funk, soul, jazz, rock, basically every musical style beautifully molded together to form a new style all it's own.
I also saw the Santana band at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic. The many nights I spent in that joint…
Lord! I was about 9 when this came out and I still LOVE IT!

What a great and unique band Santana are!
This is my jam! I remember playing this at top volume in my car after quitting the worst job I ever had. I had worked for the same company for many years, (it was minimum wage).
Never heard nothing like it, before or since,,, totally unique and incredibly amazing.
So much percussion! Love it!
This is yet another one of my favorite live recordings of this monumentally amazing group that brought the music of the 40' 50's Mambo - Cha cha up to the 60's & 70's pop charts. The "kings of mambo" smiled down on them when bringing down the house at Woodstock, then the Fillmore, and now here. The way they all played in such a tight unit was part of what made them so great aside from each of the musicians singular greatness adding to the mix.
When my mother first heard me playing this record she commented "that sounds like the music your dad & I danced to when we first met" at (El Zarape dance hall on Sunset and Alvarado in late 1940's L.A.)
Yeah man, now I realize, "este es la musica que me engendro'!.
Impossible to be cooler than this.
Powerful. Especially live. It washes over you. The drums, from all directions. I saw them around this time twice. You would think there would have been fights with all that power. But the joints were being passed around and everybody was mellow.
the definition of "mind-blowing jam".....you have come to the right place......
