Summary:
Recorded just over a year after Santana played its historic Woodstock Music & Art Fair performance, the band was fast becoming one of the biggest in the world. They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman."
A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the storied venue had just begun to experiment with staging contemporary concerts on their grounds. Staging a rock concert in a classical venue had yet to be done, so of course the concept of doing so excited Graham. He brought the full-scale Fillmore East production team in, including the Joshua Light Show, and booked a great lineup. This first concert featured B.B King, Jefferson Airplane and The Who, and drew the largest crowd that Tanglewood had ever seen by far.
Buoyed by the event's success, Tanglewood and Graham agreed to stage three similar dates in 1970. The last of these is this show, when Santana headlined after The Voices of East Harlem and the legendary Miles Davis had played (you can hear Mile's set here).
This historic and beautifully recorded performance features a smoking performance by Santana in the last year of their classic lineup, before a young Neal Schon joined the band. We think you'll agree it's an incredible performance by a great band in their prime.
Loved Santana since 1970, the drums really penetrate the soul.
Love the drummer!
The best Latin rock music ever played in this planet
I!!!!!
Oh God , the best always
santana
Santana has always had his own unique sound. You will always know it's him.
And thus began the greatest decade in the history of rock music.
Am I alone in thinking that Carlos Santana has the most recognizable electric guitar style of anyone ??!!!###
Yeah me and my dad can recognize that guitar from a country away
Am beginning to like this as much as ..Soul Sacrifice.. The sound from this concert , over 50 years ago , is insane . The tone from Carlos sends shivers!
53 ans.... si loin et pourtant tellement proche
It's more of a symphony, all the pieces in the band and no ego. Everyone just enjoying playing together
Carlos is a master. This is a fantastic album and right now in America there are a lot of racist clowns. Carlos put together a lineup of diversity and it is awesome. Right now we need people like Carlos to bring us together and stop the hate....
Dave Brown and Carlos Santana , bass player and guitar player perfect together.
Beautiful! These guys were the original Santana gang, from Santana I, II & III; if I am not mistaken. What an era!
Started listening to this badass music at the young age of 9...listened to their 1st three albums repeatedly through “headphones” -their music is so distinct, unique & INTENSE...I absolutely LOVE how all the percussionists work so well together, all playing their own “layer” of the music, and how it all works together so magically synchronistic & undoubtedly INTENSE!! There is nothing that compares to this music, Santana made their own meaning of AUTHENTIC music, pure *authentic Santana*. So diggin watching these old videos & My fave -Michael Shrieve, beat the GOOD SHIT out of those drums of his, yes InDeeD!,!!! 👍👍💜💜❌❌💋💋❗️❗️🙏🌞
Latin Percussion: .Mike Carrabello on congas (Puerto Rico) , Jose “Chepito” Areas on timbalas (Nicaragua), and young drummer Michael Shrieve (EE.UU). Percussionists
why are we naming ethnicities? carabello has grandparents on one side from puerto rico. carabello and schrieve born in america. all american nationality.
What a crew those 3,,,,they had the latin/rock percussive groove of the early 70"s down packed.
Right after this Gregg Rollie [Keyboards and voice] funded JOURNEY
@@garnetsfriend they are Latinos like me born here. We are proud of our Latin American heritage. We honor our families who came here to the USA.

I love how the organist is working the drawbars to create those shifting tonalities. Such a tasty sound.
Gregg Rollie! The very best…
no props, dub, tracks all live instruments
For me the best time of Santana was in his beginnings, Carlos mixed blues rock with touches of jazz and Latin rock, the use of feedback and the long sustain that would be his personal mark, with a Gibson SG special with two P-90s and amps that appear to be Randall Comander IImod with EL34 tubes that I later changed for the early Mesa / Boogie Mark I, this is the second lineup of the band in the early 70's....
Without saying a word. They say everything. Woaww!🎺🎶👍
I really enjoy seeing Carlos orchestrate all the musicians and then play off the vibe. Seen this band about 6-7 times. Everyone is so connected. This group of artist were really nice to listen to
Santana never had a better bass player than the late great David Brown!
BluesLicks101 dougie rauch, dave margen, pablo telez, alphonso Johnson.
Yeah, it's hard to say who was the best. So many great ones along the way.
There was no better bass player for his band in the beginning guy Dave Brown had not known that he had passed undoubtedly the glue
BluesLicks101 indeed !
Luís Alves what in the world are yo
Now,that's what I call a jam session! Awesome!
It'll never be this good again.
Todo, una perfección armónica
Even Mike Shrieve fell under Carlos' spell at 4:16 !
David Brown rest in peace!!
My three favourite musicians in the one band - Santana, Rolie & Shrieve

La mejor formación de Santana
Si mucho grande
takes my breath away listening to this great band.
These people were born in perfect time hence they found the 70s and it was the best time for art… So a Carlos Santana is a product of good time… Unfortunately we can’t the same about us…
Sad, but true. Lucky to grow up in late 60's and 70's! Richly blessed with excellent music, musicians , Art & poetry with a solid purpose. 👍
Chepito rocks
Music for My ears and soul
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Chepito es el creador del sonido Santana
Very driving! The beginning of tune had shades of an Allman Brothers sound, in my opinion. What powerful percussions! Amazing...Carlos' guitar is searing! Thank you for posting!!!
Of course the Allman's had that driving Bass & rhythm section as well
My favorite band of all time! Love u Greg, Michaels, cheputi, Carlos is the man!
MAGNIFICOS! Especialmente el baterista, el gran Michael Shrieve....maestro! / MAGNIFICENT! Especially the drummer, the great Michael Shrieve....master!
A greatest time for Carlos santana. It's amazing
That bass🚬🔊🔊🔊🎸
Gracias Chepito Áreas
Masterpiece of music
Chipito was an acquaintance of mine in the mid 1970s - got to play congas with him , on timbales at street festivals a couple of times . Man, that’s one loud experience!
I own the black Echotone conga that Carrabello generally has as his middle drum . Chiptoe had about 12 congas , and EchoTones in white , red , black.and swirl patterns . They have beautiful , low & smooth hardware , very comfortable on the hand .
I also have a set of timbales , I believe we’re his - but I can’t prove it - but I was there and knew him . I got to hang with them , not because I was a great player but I was just a white and a street player like them and , I guess had some “ fire “ in my playing that they appreciated . The way Chipito moved across the timbales was interesting- but traditional Latin players didn’t think much of Santana - it was rock not Latin and they played differently than more conservative trad Latin musics .
Chepito was fuckin amazing
Maestro inspirador
El fue el creador del sonido Santana
ES UN TEMA EXTRAORDINARIO,Y EN VIVO ES MUCHO MAS BRILLANTE Y EMOTIVO PARA VER Y ESCUCHAR.
Espectacular una persona de otro mundo
Esto es musica 😍
Can't wrap my brain around the fact that this performance was captured exactly half a century ago...
,
Not a SINGLE band touring today on the planet can compete with this...sorry Taylor Swift haha
I was 15 then ... Loved Santana!!! You know why? ...... Cuz a this!!!! 😌☺️💥🎼🎶🏔️📻❤️👌⚡🙏😎🤣🕊️ Oh God if Carlos and his buddies could have stayed right here!!! I stuck with Carlos until "Welcome" had to bail at that point. Every Music Lover gets their heart broke at some time... part of the game. 😥👋
You bailed at Welcome!?!? Dude, that is arguably his best album. Carlos is easily one of the greatest musicians and amazing song writers to ever live. Didja at least come back by Supernatural?
This is one of the great live albums of all time. Great musicians kicking ass.
I can just taste the delicious marijuana wafting in the air.
You could smell it during Santana's concerts in the early 70's
true!!
That Gibson sg was the best sounding guitar Carlos ever played ..p90 pickups and the amps were transistor Galindo Kruger I believe...he messed up playing Mesa boogie and Paul reed smith guitars...lost that raw powerful sound
It was indeed raw. Sometimes I feel the same way with regard to Jerry Garcia. They both had a huge raw sound in the beginning
Carlos used Gallien Krugers for Woodstock but right after that show at Altamont he switched to souped up Fender Twin reverbs with cheap speakers so they would distort. He an Neal Schon used three twins each in 1971.
Here is another WRONG AGAIN,PAUL REED SMITH GUITARS ARE ONE OF THE BEST GUITAR THAT YOU CAN BUY!THEY ARE VERY WELL MADE,MESA BOOGIE ARE SOME OF THE BEST GUITAR AMP A ROUND.BEFORE YOU MAKE A COMMENT KNOW YOUR GUITARS AND AMPS PLEASE?DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU MAKE A stupid comment like that.
Capaz de entrar éxtasis con la percusión !
Great bongo player. You can't appreciate this without the video! K
When Carlos first stunned the world in his early twenties he was the most talented young guitarist I have ever since heard.
Magistral la percusión. Santana por siempre.
Quarantine!!!
I'm 65 now, getting 66 this year. So it is concert is 54 years old and one of the best. People who didn't grew up this music have lost their life.0
¡Chepito!
Hands of steel coated with velvet. Karl
And just then....Drums and bass were born, and Santana was that it was good.
Tickets weren't more than 3 dollars for the lawn at Tanglewood. probably 5 bucks close up.
they were great back then !
+clemenza24 they still are!
One of Santana's best performances.. 2nd to Woodstock
A Clinic in Latin-rock Rhythm's. They absolutely "Killed-It" = phenomenal performance. What a band. oNe LovE from NYC
UNIQUE ROCK
This video can be a Damn good commercial for Hair products, that's some serious hair on the group members.
Ufff!
Never gets old. Raw talent and precious collaboration. A retrospect into an era of pure vision and inspiration.
Pure fire! It doesn't get any better than this!
3:09 la mejor parte de esta joya
Una maravilla
Hearing Bill Graham introduce them gave me chills...
Bill Graham the GREATEST : Fillmore East, Fillmore West, Winterland, Tanglewood and so on...Yes, he was the man!

Carlos Santana the best of all time!
Mike Carabello and Chepito. after that, there was no percussion department like it
ever hear of Mingo Lewis?
Mantenimiento, with all my respect, I don't agree with your affirmation, it is true that they were good, they sounded really together with an amazing and special energy, but, after that, there was a super amazing percussion rhythm session, masters of Afro-Cuban traditions lead by legendary Armando Peraza and Orestes Vilato and they sounded really good, Thanks to them, Santana`s band was elevated to a higher status called Art
@@joseavilaize Orestes Vilató, Fania all star timbalero, from the Ray Barreto and Típica ´73 bands was never part of the band. Just a hired gun
You need to check out the Jamiroquai rhythm section, my man..
Karl perazzo & Raul Rekow MORON!
wow, Gregg got a six packs! :) :)
Ok ok estoy deacuerdo

Firing on all cylinders!!! Bravo.
Can’t believe he thinks his PRS has better tone than that SG lol
why oh why did he ever stop playing that SG....
Not bad. But where's Neal Schon? You need those twin guitars to get that Santana 3 sound.
Gracias por el info carnal
banda com trabalho pra todos instrumentos showwww
That guitar tone! Must have been so ahead of the times!
Why does he fiddle with his knobs so much?😊
