The percussion players drive the song, Santana gets his little portions, shrieve with his drum solo, and even rolie gets a little organ solo while maintaining himself as a backing to the song. Can’t forget David brown also kind of holding up the song together on bass with the percussionists.

I felt that there was a strong social movements in the so so called chicano studies and Carlos Santana was our number one representative. As much as I like their performance at Woodstock, this one, about a year later, is even better! The band is really tight here and the drum solo is incredible. Thank goodness we have these videos to remember how great music was in those days.
And the solo he performed here didn't even come close to the one he performed at Woodstock 1969, and it was still brilliant! Shrieve and Mitch Mitchell are the two greatest drummers of all time, in my opinion.
I listen to this a hundred times and it never gets old..i actually get energy from this...Every single member playing here knows this is something special..something special indeed
this music is no less important than classical music, back in the time when audiences had the attention span to appreciate music more than 3 minutes long. So appreciate people that post this music. Thank you!

I was at Woodstock. Yes I’m that old. And I have watched it hundreds of times since on video and it never gets old. This performance is as good or better. Michael is off the hook. Unbelievable.
Reading the comments and listening for the 100th time this video and many versions of Soul Sacrifice makes this song one of my favorite of many songs. What an amazing group of musicians, creators and talented performers with sounds that make me want to dance all night.I am so glad I got to grow up listening to what many believe was, is and will be forever “ real music” played with passion, thank you Carlitos, thank you all.
Man ! These guys had a lot of gas in the tank ! This has to be the most high-octane performance I've ever seen ! The fans here were very fortunate to witness this historical performance ! Santana is legend 😁👌
If I witnessed this live, I would think I'd died and gone to heaven. So incredible and passionate. They don't make music like this anymore. It is a privilege to see such talented musicians. This version is even better than the recording and the drum solo is even better than Woodstock. Early Santana was the best and took Latin music to the mainstream. Love Santana always 🇦🇺
I did see it live. August 1970 I was 21. Today (Wednesday, 22 March 2023) I’m 74. A great night back then. Two years later (August 1972) I was in the Army at Fort Benning, GA. Great run on the road of life for me.
This conga player, played during the Santana concert, until his hands bled. He went back stage, taped his hands up, and continued playing. I saw the with my own eyes!
I used to jam with members and family of the band - actually it’s not unusual to get cuts and even have your fingers split along the fingerprint . Trap drummers can glance the cymbals - I have one cymbal that’s splattered with my blood and it’s still there after decades . We used to play for 8 hours - and if you’re in a band , you should be able to play at least 4 hours straight - don’t want to crap out after a measly couple of hours
@@BillyBallard-w3q I don’t have arthritis but my back is screwed up - surprisingly “ suddenly “ in my 60s but I did a lot of heavy work and I was a firefighter - so it takes a toll . I wish some enterprising physician or PT would make a health regimen for drummers - we really need one .
You haven't been to a music concert until you have been to a Santana concert. This 1970 version of the band is typical of the experience of real musicianship you get at a Santana concert. This version of Soul Sacrifice is the best I've seen and I have seen a few over the decades. Mike Shrieve is a weapon !
@@billbeckett6057 I caught all three concert nights on Santana's first ever tour to Sydney Australia in 1973 and a few more since. Never miss a tour down here !
Creo que esta es la mejor versión de Soul Sacrifice, qué banda tan espectacular. Grande José Chepito y bueno cada uno le puso el alma a esta presentación.
To my eyes, this is by far the best perfomance ever by a music group. No body knows how the fuck they top the set at woodstock. That solo of Mike Shrieve no words to describe.
The 70's ! America's best musical decade. It will never happen again. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, The Who , Santana, Sly and the Family Stone and the list goes on and on ! Motown ! Blues ! Jazz!....And no rap/ crap ! Imagine.....No rap !
I couldn't go half a century with a melted face. Congrats, Man. I was born in San Mateo, and used to live on N. Ellsworth, near Poplar, in San Mateo. When I get back, I'm definitely checking out Pacific Recorders, where Santana recorded many of their albums.
Funny that they were waiting to go on stage at Woodstock and bands were cancelling ahead of them so even so they were getting High while they were waiting, they had to go on stage 6 hours earlier and so they were still high....and this is what we got. Buzzed out Santana and It was great. Not what they meant to be but it is what it is.
One of the great great songs of the era. I was lucky enough to see them perform at a raceway in Nazareth, PA. It must have been 1970. There was a power outage shortly after they came on stage, so Michael Shrieve, who was still in his teens, played a 20 minute drum solo. I think his energy alone revved up the power again and the band finished a fabulous set. As those T-shirts say, "Yeah, I'm old, but I saw all the great bands." I hope some of today's teens can appreciate what they're looking at when they see this video.
I wish that Michael Shrieve could have gotten a huge award for that drum solo. Never heard anything like it before. Santana had such energy and my god, what a connection with the other members.
@@gracegarza3299 Yep - all the way to the "trash can ending" in the outro on that Am9 chord - "Soul Sacrifice" is one of the greatest of all Santana classic numbers.
Michael Shrieve remains, to this day, the best drummer I've ever enjoyed listening to. A rhythm god. There may be more technically skilled drummers, but they tend to lose the groove (a.k.a. the whole point) of a tune. Shrieve NEVER lost it. EVER. Stunningly in the pocket all the time. And that's just one guy- this was a whole band so in the pocket and so full of talent- Santana, Rolie making magic on the keys, Brown holding it down, and- of course- Chepito and Carabello never get enough credit for being an integral part of the rhythm band. Damn this is a great listen. :)
Tight playing, crazy intensity and a real crowd igniter, you cannot fail to find the groove and start dancing. The drum solo never fails to excite, the instrumental breaks are nearly a side show. The drummer is something else making more sound out of a relatively small kit than others do with much bigger and more complex sets. However the tune just becomes a musical incendiary when Carlos and Gregg start interplaying in the second half. Why can't modern day players match the skills these guys show?
Quand la musique était une affaire des vrais artistes et pas seulement une affaire d'argent. Pas de bruit inutile, des paroles offensantes, juste de la musique, la vraie.❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉 Que du bonheur.
This has to be one of the most intense, vibrant jams that ends with a hammer blow. The band is on fire, but I have to give to Michael Shrieve. One of the greatest drummers. Any band would kill to have him. Seen them many times going back to the late 70's. They never disappointed. Always jammed to the top of their game.
Be that as it may, I am now 70 and listening to this for 13 minutes erases the years between now and 1969 and the first time I was exposed to this song. I'm probably not making any sense but it sure feels right.
You are making perfect sense and there are a lot of us right there with you. This 1970 music seems galaxies away from where we are today in so many ways . Right now I'm an old guy anchored-in-place until the coronapocalypse is over. About a month before this Santana performance on 7-21-70 Chicago played that same stage in what I think was their finest moment.
I came because it's literally written on Michael Shrieve's wiki page in the first paragraph that he feels this solo was better than the one at woodstock.
Pure rock music at it is best, without strobe lighting, fireworks to make-up for less musical talent,no AI videos,,,just raw musical talent, being 18yrs old it was great to have experienced the late 60's/70s, now in my 70yrs , sad you youngsters will never experience the majic we old timers lived to see, so lets rock on you old FARTS

This is why we fell in love with Santana. Multi-racial, true musicians to the core, playing music like we never heard before, no words, just undeniable rythyms and beats that moved our souls. More than a "soul sacrifice" it is a "soul rebirth."
Carlos Santana and his band transcend boundaries with his musical spirit and we all tune into what Bill Gramham calls the joy of loving, the joy of giving.
susan paul.. I'm Hispanic and when I was a beginner drummer as a kid I wanted to be like Michael Shrieve the drummer... I always felt that his style of playing was my language instrumentally if it makes sense...cheers!!!!
Musicians today, with all the high technology that lets them record, refine, never see each other as individuals record over earlier tracks, etc. have just lost a lot, I think. The energy BETWEEN the band members, feeding off each other, responding to each other, and the ability to do it LIVE and to perfection...amazing, and it will be hard to get back to these days. I love a lot of modern drummers, but Michael Shrieve's sound with the most basic of drum kits is something to behold.
Live shows like this are extinct, unfortunately. When you see a multitude in the thousands all grooving together to a song that pulls you in from second number 1and just the sheer amount of talent on that stage in perfect harmony and let's each musician have the opportunity to show their individual skills you turn a concert into a happening. In my opinion this lineup was the original and the best. That basic drum kit sure was all Michael needed to make a huge statement.Sadly there will never be the talent, the times, and the togetherness to pull off such magnificent performances like we thankfully are able to watch and say,"man I wish I could have been there"!Truthfully,I also get the physical reactions as though I AM there. What a thrill!
Epic drum solo by Michael Shrieve. I got chills as the crowd erupted in joy.

And the solo he performed here didn't even come close to the one he performed at Woodstock 1969, and it was still brilliant!
Shrieve and Mitch Mitchell are the two greatest drummers of all time, in my opinion.
I loved his concert in 1970, I came home from work and definitely listened to it; on the other side, another favorite was the group Chicago.
Holy shit. I've never seen this live version before today. Fucking amazing! That's a band that's firing on all cylinders.
Tremendoustremenfdous the only word needed
I saw them live at the olympa arena in Detroit. The power went out and the drummer solo for 30 min it was alsome
I listen to this a hundred times and it never gets old..i actually get energy from this...Every single member playing here knows this is something special..something special indeed
this music is no less important than classical music, back in the time when audiences had the attention span to appreciate music more than 3 minutes long. So appreciate people that post this music. Thank you!

Has to be the best live recording ever!!!
I was at Woodstock. Yes I’m that old. And I have watched it hundreds of times since on video and it never gets old. This performance is as good or better. Michael is off the hook. Unbelievable.
Carlos says they were overdosed by Jerry Garcia at Woodstock. Seems like they all were able to adjust their grams at this concert.
prob better because the dropped acid at woodstock,.,,
Reading the comments and listening for the 100th time this video and many versions of Soul Sacrifice makes this song one of my favorite of many songs. What an amazing group of musicians, creators and talented performers with sounds that make me want to dance all night.I am so glad I got to grow up listening to what many believe was, is and will be forever “ real music” played with passion, thank you Carlitos, thank you all.
One of the biggest rushes with Santana for me, is watching Carlos and Gregg interact. Total communion.
I am 81 now and still love that music. It brings back memories of early Fillmore days in SF and an oh-so-energetic Santana band.
NEVER get tired of watching michael shrieve...and the band is so completely keyed into each other. RIGHTEOUS!
Hello how are you doing?
It's nice meeting you here
OMFG!!! What did I just see?!?!?!! I just about bounced off of my couch!
INSANE!!!
I'm getting a boner
most of us grew up with this
Man ! These guys had a lot of gas in the tank ! This has to be the most high-octane performance I've ever seen ! The fans here were very fortunate to witness this historical performance ! Santana is legend 😁👌
Speed was way safer/better back then . Jus sayin……
Master of puppets live in Seattle has about 100,000X more energy than this. Still good though.
I saw them a week before this at the Fillmore East. My first concert at age 14! My mind was blown!
1970 was one of their best years because of this line up, but yk things didn’t glue on together and they had to go thru changes
Thank God for RUclips
your awsome and there are great
..lol
Sami, 100% agreed with you. Just an addition: it is not only Latin music, it is African culture made music.
Michael Carabello is a fantastic rhythm player, I’ve got a huge lady-crush on him, too. 🎉
Arthritis set in day after but worthy of effort by rythm condos man.!!!!!
I believe it!😢 3:30
You haven't been to a music concert until you have been to a Santana concert. This 1970 version of the band is typical of the experience of real musicianship you get at a Santana concert. This version of Soul Sacrifice is the best I've seen and I have seen a few over the decades. Mike Shrieve is a weapon !
Am 71 now. Oh how i miss these incredibile live music events! Real music, not the crap people are listening to now.
I was at this show! Missed Woodstock, but made it to Watkins Glen in 1973. Great shows!
@@billbeckett6057 I caught all three concert nights on Santana's first ever tour to Sydney Australia in 1973 and a few more since. Never miss a tour down here !
@@michaelknapp2750 I was at Altamont which was between Woodstock and this one. Not good times, Great times
@@chesterbrown6006 me too. in junior high. what stabbings?
Creo que esta es la mejor versión de Soul Sacrifice, qué banda tan espectacular. Grande José Chepito y bueno cada uno le puso el alma a esta presentación.
This guy is a real drummer
To my eyes, this is by far the best perfomance ever by a music group. No body knows how the fuck they top the set at woodstock. That solo of Mike Shrieve no words to describe.
Agree.
@@fredgranger9452 You know it's not CS but a scammer right?
And he's only 21.
Simply outstanding
The 70's ! America's best musical decade. It will never happen again. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, The Who , Santana, Sly and the Family Stone and the list goes on and on ! Motown ! Blues ! Jazz!....And no rap/ crap ! Imagine.....No rap !
led zeppelin deep purple the who are english bands
no rap. I wish. I want a melody, lyrics, and the pure talent. Thank you Santana.
rap is not music
The 60s were fabulous too!
The best decade ever!!! Top bands 🎸🎸🎸
There are no words for this, just the music. Soul Sacrifice.
I saw this. 4th row in front of congas. Of the more that 200 concerts in my lifetime, this was the best drum solo that I have ever seen!
Wow
I couldn't go half a century with a melted face. Congrats, Man.
I was born in San Mateo, and used to live on N. Ellsworth, near Poplar, in San Mateo.
When I get back, I'm definitely checking out Pacific Recorders, where Santana recorded many of their albums.
Oh my God, at 63 years of age I still get goosebumps every time I watch this performance. There is none better!!!
Well I am 69 ..and love them ..
I got both of you beat! I am 70 years old...... and I STILL love them!!!
@@debraweaver6308 I was 13 when that 1st album just blew me away... This was the "golden age"...
The greatest live performance by any band in rock history.
Only 63? Hell, I'm nearly 64! Oh... still blows my mind!
One of *THEE* greatest live rock performances of ALL TIME!
Even better than the Woodstock performance of a year earlier. And that was great.
They stole the show at Woodstock . Were unknown on east coast at the time
Not better than the woodstock performance, that performance was out of this world
Funny that they were waiting to go on stage at Woodstock and bands were cancelling ahead of them so even so they were getting High while they were waiting, they had to go on stage 6 hours earlier and so they were still high....and this is what we got. Buzzed out Santana and It was great. Not what they meant to be but it is what it is.
So freaking AWESOME 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏👏
Carlos presented him w an Award in the later years for being that Glue🎶♥️
@@gracegarza3299 Yep - all the way to the "trash can ending" in the outro on that Am9 chord - "Soul Sacrifice" is one of the greatest of all Santana classic numbers.
¹
It's just amazing that he's basically playing a Ringo kit, with only two toms. He gets so many different sounds out of the snare. A real artist.
@@gracegarza3299 He had the highest respect for Mike.
Forget Shrieve solo look at his whole song playing 100 miles per hour in 13 minutes just amazing. Greatest drum played ever.
Shrieve gets more sound out of fewer drums in his kit than anyone I’ve ever seen.
@@projoebiochem Yes ! This a real musician. that is the difference..
He is 72 years old this year..
I saw him in Rotterdam 2003. I think, that concert will be with me forever ❤️❤️❤️
Damn right!
You got them all. Mike did his own cd/lp. Amazing
6.8 million views and I myself have accounted for a few dozen or so - just can't get enough of this crew.
And don't forget the guy with the maracas!
Still gives me chills today to listen to Santana!
X 2
One in a thousand years.
I have watched the Woodstock version many times because it was epic. This version is even better!
Michael says so himself.
I like both for different reasons 🔥
Totally agree
Indeed!
WELL SANTANA LOOKS SOBER IN THIS ONE .
MAYBE?
Quand la musique était une affaire des vrais artistes et pas seulement une affaire d'argent. Pas de bruit inutile, des paroles offensantes, juste de la musique, la vraie.❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉 Que du bonheur.
One of the best things you will see on RUclips, good lord they were on fire!
Oh, to be that young again!! Santana at his very best... surrounded by the best musicians possible!
Easily one of the greatest live performances in rock history.
Not
Intense.....
Nah tripping on acid at Woodstock before they were big has to top this
Easily, hard to come up with another that can stand up to this, my previous was Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock, but they are way beyond that here.
.😊
All I can say is WOW! And the best part of this is NOT ONE DAMN phone in the air.
Well technically the best part is the music and performance.
Good One!! Best comment I've read yet!! LOL!!
None in 1970....

@@robford9933 Thank you, I guess I haven't stopped making sense.
I thought Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock was the best percussion song ever made. Then I randomly found this.Damn! Percussion heaven! Pure joy!!!
I agree! This is insane!
Tanglewood is a great venue!
I came because it's literally written on Michael Shrieve's wiki page in the first paragraph that he feels this solo was better than the one at woodstock.
Same song but actually better than the Woodstock one!
same here!!!
Michael Shrieve, one of the most underrated drummer of all time....
He isn't underrated amongst other drummers.. same as Butch Trucks from the Allman Brothers or that drummer from April Wine.
it is and still one the best drummers of all times....

One of the most amazing things about Santana's band is the percussionists play rhythms that also harmonize. The drums speak to the soul.
Yes, love the conga player Michael Carabello the best, he’s so fantastic to watch!
Truly the "soul" for rock n roll!
Most incredible drum solo ever! Mike Shrieve - fucking awesome man!!!!!

See them in concert. Wow!! 😊
susan paul.. I'm Hispanic and when I was a beginner drummer as a kid I wanted to be like Michael Shrieve the drummer... I always felt that his style of playing was my language instrumentally if it makes sense...cheers!!!!
That's deep :-)
If race doesn't matter, why would be a multiracial band be superior to one that is not?
Michael Shrieve!!! Genio de la batería!!! Súper músico!!
I'm guessing he was born with drum sticks in his hands. Amazing .
I agree
Used to be, he's not Carl Palmer anymore he must have arthritis or doesn't practice much anymore
Whatever you said only in English, Latin, French......etc. lol.
This why Michael Shrieve is one of the best drummers of all time.
Legendary !!!
He simply play the heck out of his drums.
Still the best performance I’ve ever heard in my life.
Still soul sacrificed ❤
Soul sacrifice. Tribal force. Spiritual possession. Irresistible rhythm. Unavoidable mess. Small death. Glorious rebirth.
Love watching Michael Shrieve play those drums!
The energy of this performance is like a drug!!! I feel like i havent aged at all!! Im only 66!!! Diggin this!!!!
Damn ! Me too ! 🤘🤘
Me the same.Greetings from Hamburg also😂 66
SANTANA'S MUSIC is a WONDERFUL DRUG 💯
Me too, from India. I am 67.
69 here!!! Same!!!
A wonderful band playing at their peak. Never been bettered.
Michael Freaking Shrieve!!!! 4 drums he's playing- 4 DRUMS!!! WHY IS HE NOT NAMED AS ONE OF THE BEST EVER?
Because he only used 3 drums.
Hes bad ass
Hate to break it to you, but he used four(kick, snare, rack and floor). He's killer, either way.
Four drums. Four. Snare, two toms, bass. Four.
And he practically keeps up the standard of the solo for the rest of the tune, what energy!!
