Skirting the Shabins

  • After spending last winter freezing our feet off, we decided to skirt or underpin the Shabins to hold in some heat and prevent the new water pipes from freezing. We obtained a bunch of FREE metal so we are using that to skirt them. We also put some gravel along the bottom of each panel to help drain the water that sheds off. Check it out!

    Great job it really don't matter if the metal is vertically or horizontally on there as long as your screw hits a stud and your washer flattens out

    • @OurSerenityHomestead
      @OurSerenityHomestead  3 года назад

      Yup. That's what I figure. However I can get the most coverage with the metal I had.

    Are you going to insulate or put reflectix on the inside of the skirting or will that be overkill? I am in the process of building a rack for my outdoor firepit...like yours, but I need to figure out how to put a roof on it. Insight?

    • @OurSerenityHomestead
      @OurSerenityHomestead  4 года назад

      I dont have to money to buy enough reflextix for the skirt... I wish I did. On the rack, maybe build a 2×4 rectangle enough to covee the tip then elevate it and put a short piece of roofing metal on it. Good luck!

    How easy is it to get free metal?

    • @OurSerenityHomestead
      @OurSerenityHomestead  8 месяцев назад

      I got alot of free metal from a guy who built large commercial chicken houses. I was always told that the answer is always NO if you don't ask. Therefore, I always ask. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    Looks great. Did you use large screws on the underpinning. I’m trying to figure out what I could use , my underpinning keeps getting blown off .

    • @OurSerenityHomestead
      @OurSerenityHomestead  2 года назад +1

      Thanks, to attach to the building I used 3" deck screws and to attach to each panel the standard 1.5" hex head metal screws. Works great.

    nice. try to keep things away from your siding, it traps moisture...then rots. Also consider some 6 mil sheeting on the ground under your home.

      Thanks.

      @@OurSerenityHomestead PS home depot has the black 6mil sheeting for cheep. Only put it where it wont get a lot of U.V/ sunlight ...like behind the skirted areas....also have some downslope from the skirt to about 10' away from the home. Even if that requires a mild ditch/swale the carries the water somewhere non objectionable.

    I was wondering if you don't mind saying how did you learn to do all that carpentry

    • @OurSerenityHomestead
      @OurSerenityHomestead  2 года назад

      I love to read. I learn quicker and more thoroughly by reading, (I know that is unusual). I have been building things my entire life. My Super Dad can build just about anything too so I guess that skill was just passed down. I love using my hands to make stuff.

    Nice job! I know the skirting on my travel trailer made a world of difference last winter. Will you have to insulate the walls of the crawl space at all?

    • @OurSerenityHomestead
      @OurSerenityHomestead  4 года назад

      Thanks Annmarie. I was hoping to line the skirting walls with reflectix insulation but I did not have enough and did not have the money to buy it. Maybe after taxes I can do it.

      @@OurSerenityHomestead I just thought you all were in a warmer climate and it wasnt needed LOL. Im going to do reflectix for floor insulation and also crawlspace walls. Seems like it would be better than fiberglass since we have field mice out here

    No offense what you're doing will serve the purpose, however you're installing it incorrectly. It's supposed to be running up the other way. Vertically... It would be much more work cutting it, and would probably take a good bit more metal, but anyway, what you have is free and you probably didn't have enough to do it the way I'm talking about.

    • @OurSerenityHomestead
      @OurSerenityHomestead  3 года назад

      No offense taken. Yes, it would be better the other way but this was what we had to do with the limited amounts we had. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
