It's just so wrong. I know our judicial system "isn't perfect," but this is just straight up lacking common sense and simple decency. I wonder if CPS was even involved to check on them? It should have been. But no mention of it.

That's because it's not mind numbing, it's very telling. The detective is listening for what he's not saying, establishing a baseline, gathering intelligence on his background, grafting his mannerisms and behavior through a quick Myers Briggs, and letting the culprit explain their story while asking paced questions involving time & place.
This allows many things, but ultimately it's about exposing holes in their alibi.

It’s very difficult to build a rapport with someone who you know did these terrible things. You have to show empathy to these people.
When I worked at the jail as a nurse, I always treated the inmates with respect and compassion because, firstly it was my job and to be honest, if there was ever a riot, I wanted those inmates to see me as a real person, just like I saw them.
The one inmate I still treated politely but honestly I was very repulsed by was a man who killed 2 young people and was on death row. He came to the jail for court appearances and left in about a week to go back to prison.

He established trust, gathered background info & potential motives & then cut to the chase. Such interrogations are crucial if we’re to better understand disparate/psychopathic types of individuals. It’s not just that he committed the crimes but how he got there. It’s fascinating stuff!

This is an almost flawless interrogation and definitely the cleanest interview I've ever seen. The Detectives entire interview flowed from the introduction to the end, seamlessly. This is a perfect example between big city (Phoenix) and small city Detectives. This Detective is clearly well educated and very experienced. You see these interrogations with small city Detectives that constantly stop, leave the office multiple times, fumble words and even get called out for their fabricated "knowledge". Not there fault, they just don't have the experience, education and support needed.

Experience in anything is gained by the ''doing'' and by then applying lessons learned as one improves. Using your terms..."'big city'' detectives have many more interview opportunities to hone their techniques versus ''small city'' ones and thus will be perhaps seen as less ''polished'' in their procedures. Just my input.

So if you're ever being questioned by cops for a witness statement or something and they tell you they HAVE to read you your rights, the smartest thing to do is lawyer up, even if you didn't do anything wrong.
