I just took your advice on filming like a vacation I want to remember forever and I loved how my recent vlog came out! Definitely my favorite video I’ve created!
Be careful with auto white balance since it can cause weird color shifts between cuts or even during one shot and can cause footage to not match up right. Having it set to daylight will probably be fine for most outdoor scenes, and even for indoor scenes if you're ok with them having a warm look
Thanks Victor for such a helpful video for travel filming. I had recently taken my Sony A7iv with a 24-105 lens, GoPro Hero 11, and iPhone 12pro max on a trip to Switzerland and a tour of Patagonia and South America. Great tips Victor, I like the tip of don't stress out about your shots and enjoy your vacation. Family does get stressed out sometimes if they need to "perform". Thanks a lot for all your tips! You're an incredibly talented filmmaker. I wanted to ask you something, though. Yours are some of the very few videos I've seen shot with Sony cameras (and specifically the FX30 and A7) that don't scream "DIGITAL". I don't know why people are not talking about this more, because it's very obvious to me that no matter how good the image quality is on these cameras and how many times people (over)use the word "cinematic", 90% of the videos I watch featuring the last batch of Sony hybrid and cinema cams don't look like film, at least to me. It's not that they look "cheap" by any means. As I said, the image quality, colors and sharpness are super professional looking but, for lack of a better expression, the look "too real" and don't trigger the feeling of "this is a movie" that I get with other cameras. And I'm talking about cameras because I know there's a ton of different elements that contribute in making something feel like a movie, but in this particular case, you rely a lot on natural light and "simple" techniques and it still feels different from other videos I've seen shot with the FX30 the A7 and similar where even using pro lighting, it looks more like a commercial or a corporate video, but never like an actual film. What would you say it's that key element that makes your videos look different?
Thanks! I know what you mean about that digital feel. I think a huge part of it is exposure and making sure you're softening up the highlights and shadows in post so it uses the full dynamic range! I've shown my entire workflow in terms of filming and editing and I'm not quite sure what else I'm doing different! could be the grading!
@@VictorLaforteza Watching those videos as I type this. You really know how to squeeze the last drop of filmlike quality from these cameras. Thanks again!

Furthermore a great Video and an inspiration for me to film with different perspectives and wider of course. Yeah, I find setting up some intention for what you want to shoot really alleviate the pressure to get all the shots (photos and videos). Hope you enjoyed your recent trip brother!
Great video man! But look: The overheating on the A7 iv is kinda like a myth to me. I'm a BMX filmmaker and I filmed the last month's under very hot temperatures for hour's. The a7 iv did not overheat a single time since I got it and I film about 80% of the time in 4k 60p 10bit... (I though try to keep the flip screen flipped out all the time so the heat can spread very nicely)
I think we got good a good batch tbh. I was shooting some scenes on a tripod and it was under the sun in Thailand and it was super HOT to touch that I had to cool it down but I didn't see the high temp sign at all. Maybe it was there for 10-15 mins but yeah... a bunch of people report that it overheats quick but some like ours are almost like tanks!
Two things: The A7IV has a low overheat threshold setting. Remove it. Tip 2. My A7IV also remains cooler if I flip out the screen out. As that is where the main heat sink is for that camera. So you are correct!

Going to Japan and the Philippines in August. I'm hoping to get to at least half of your level of videography in 2 months lol. Wish me luck! Quick question, do you edit while you travel or do you do it all at home? If so, what computer do you bring with you on your travels?
Japan and Philippines are going to be awesome!!! Excited for you. Love the white sand and turquoise waters in PH. I edit my videos at home. I bring my 16" macbook pro m1 pro just in case I need to do some client work but for these youtube videos, I usually try and do them at home!
@@VictorLaforteza Thanks! I'm bringing a tinier version of your rig: ZV-E10, E 11mm f1.8, and my Crane M2S. Seeing your wide angle shots made me feel good about my 11mm purchase lol. It really does showcase the setting nicely. Loved the 7/11 static low light shot. Will be doing a lot of that in Tokyo and Manila. Last question, what mic were you using during your vlog shots? sounds really nice even on the street.
@@JohnMichael-gd2lh YES!! wide angles are so nice. I used a DJI mic! you can see it attached on my camera sling bag strap! Still trying to make it the best I can with audio so this was like one of my first few times pulling off something decent
Great video, thank you for explaining so well! As far as the settings go, do you use SteadyShot when using gimbal? Seeing the wide shot, it doesn’t look like there’s any crap.
I usually turn it off but I also had some good shots with it accidentally left on.. so I don't really know which one is the best... lol most of the shots in this video is off though to give you a reference!
@@VictorLaforteza appreciate the quick response! I have a Sony 20mm f1.8 and was thinking it might not be wide enough with steady shot on, but I’ll just shoot with it off. I have Sony A7iv and RS3 Mini, first time shooting with it. Thanks again
My issue with this is that my journey stops being about travelling and begins to feel like just another chapter of work. There is a phrase I heard recently - to make your video look more authentic you have to make it a lot less authentic in the moment. You have to stop, find a frame, set it up, ask your friend to stay there, run back and forth a bunch of times and so on. Your chill walk through a jungle becomes a sweaty tiring mess. Your heavenly swim by the waterfall becomes a chore as you get out of the water for 12th time to redo a shot. Your movies are awesome and they look great but I just can't stop thinking about the BTS of them so these are few of my words for anyone's watching.
Totally get it... But the whole video is about shooting intentionally and not having to shoot so many times to get the perfect shot. There’s a segment here where I talk about letting go of the perfect shot and learning to accept the first time is good enough or just completely skip it.
Hoping to be able to visit Japan in November with my girlfriend, it's a dream for both of us and I want to capture those moments for us to be able to remember and revisit or show to friends and family, thus the reason i am watching your video haha, so thank you for this
Man, watching the small videos really hit hard in terms of reminiscing some travel memories. It's amazing how we can relive it with simple shots! Hope you guys get to Japan. IT'S AMAZING!
@@VictorLaforteza By the way, I finally got my dream come true. My friend sold me his A7siii through terms. Coming from ZV-E10 and A6400. What lens do you suggest I get? I have limited budget as I know the FE lenses are extremely expensive compared to APS-C lenses. I always use the Sony 35mm and Sigma 16mm on my A6400.
What are your tips on culling? I came back from a 4D3N road trip and although the clips were great but going through everything I shot makes it daunting. I'm going to Singapore in August and I'm thinking of implementing your tips from this video!
I definitely had this issue before but letting go of the idea that you're gonna miss editing a good shot is the way to go. You can revisit your catalogue and see if there's any new ideas for editing that pop up at a later date! Awesome! excited for your tip in Singapore. Only been to their airport. Definitely one of the best!
Great job Victor! and thanks for sharing. Maybe something that can be also considered is sound. Especially if it will be used as a meaningful component of the film. Having a small camera mic or sound recorder would make a great difference.
This is great, thanks Victor! Yes, I've got a two week trip in Queensland and shooting a wedding. Then we will be in Europe for 9 weeks, so pumped! Been buying some bits and pieces for travelling, including the Wandrd bags you mentioned in another video. Just making one last decision: keep my Sigma 24-70 2.8 or sell and get the Sony 24-70 2.8 GM ii, thoughts?
Amazing! glad to hear, the joys of travelling is back!! As for the lens, I'm in the same boat. I want to sell the my sigma 28-70 2.8 and Sony 24mm 1.4 for the sony 24-70 2.8 GMii. The only reason is to condense my lenses and get that breathing compensation! If you do have the extra funds, I suggest getting the best of the best since you're going to use it for work anyways. If not, the sigma 24-70 is about 90% of the Sony already.
I like the idea. Thanks for sharing! For me, nothing about a zoom lens is "super light weight," and taking a gimbal with you while traveling sounds annoying and heavy. For traveling, I take my Sony A7iii with the Sony 24mm f/2.8 G lens. I also take a Godox TT350s smaller flash for portraits. That's an actual lightweight setup. When I do dolly in movement shots for video, I just do it handheld and stabilize it in Resolve later. Looks great. Having just one lens means I can throw the camera in and out of my backpack and I have to think a bit on how I want to frame shots. It keeps things simple. I also use my iPhone 13 Mini a ton! The stabilization is better than the Sony A7iii, and after doing a video I can easily share it with the people I'm traveling with. I lightly edit the photos/videos and it looks great. Next time I travel I'm leaving the camera at home and I'm going to challenge myself to only use the iPhone.
Yeah depends on what’s tolerable with your setup! I looooove lightweight setups! kinda missing the 24mm. I do agree, I think at one point I’m gonna try just bringing my phone and a power bank! That’s gonna be more worry free travel and easier to capture photos with it! Snap and go kinda thing
Awesome video. I'm curious - in the Bangkok footage, are you using Log or standard color profile? Thanks P.S. I live in bangkok and you showed many of my favorite places in the city!
Bangkok is so fun!!!! 90% of them are in slog3! some are shot in s-cinetone to get some low ISO shots for the bright day light (i didnt bring an ND filter so I had to compensate somewhere)
This is something I'm actually working on! I just use the in camera audio. I feel like I'd just add them in post if things didn't work out with the built in mic but maybe a shotgun mic would be great. It just makes the camera a bit more bulky.
Great content - thanks for sharing! I was wondering do you ever get nervous, or get into trouble when flying a drone in foreign/busier cities? I know just in the US it can get hairy with needing a license and stuff, so I can only imagine it being just as difficult in other countries as well.
I don't bring drones anymore! It just takes too much time and getting permits is a pain for little gain.. (unless it's a professional shoot) everything drone shot was from storyblocks! but when I brought them before, I always get nervous even if I have proper permits especially with FPV.
to me what makes something feel like a movie scene is the emotion, not the cinematography. You achieve good cinematography, but in film, a story, with a character, and emotion is necessary
I completely agree! This was more like to get that high quality video but to immerse the video with more story character and emotional journey is the true "cinema"!!
I usually do! an ND 16 is enough for me but if you like convenience a quality VND would work. This trip I actually forgot my ND so I had to compensate by using the lower extended ISO for SLOG3
I am buying the Sony A7IV to go with my Nikon Z9 and a few other cameras that I have in my rental fleet. I am starting a company in Panama City Beach, Florida called Camera Leader to rent cameras and lenses to peeps like you.
What VND filter do you currently use? Your last video about NDs was the haida 2 in 1. Is that still your go to? also would that be enough on a sunny day. Thank you
Mr. know-it-all, I shot everything in slog3 and it doesn't change if you convert it to rec.709 in post. Let's see you shoot iso 100 on slog3. 5:39 there's a little ASSIST SLOG3? the PP8 on the bottom right?
I think diffraction played a big part of it looking softer. The A7IV 4k is super sharp and being on f/8-f/22 introduce diffraction which makes the lens softer. Not a good thing for photography but it seems like it works pretty good with video! Balancing out the super sharp 4k
@@VictorLaforteza thanks! I thought that faster lenses have move soft image. If I open the aperture I will get more light and more soft image but I see it's completely opposite.
@@gutandrew Well both are correct! at wide open it would be still sharp on the subject but everything else would be pleasingly soft vs diffraction, it makes everything soft that sometimes it ruins some shots! @3:09 talking head is at f/3.5 and then shot before that is f/16

The sigma 16mm 1.4 is a really good lens for the FX30!! if you need a wide angle it's a must have. Another good one is the Sony 11mm 1.8!
Thanks for this video! So much great advice. We love Thailand so much and you captured it's beauty perfectly. Our next travel plans are still up in the air. We left Thailand a few weeks ago and are in Bali at the moment. But who know's where we'll end up after this. Just subscribed. :) Safe travels!
Thanks!! Thailand definitely has a place in our hearts as well. Good food, amazing hospitality, and beautiful places!! Hope you guys are enjoying Bali. We miss it so much! Safe travels to you guys too!! Holla at us if you guys ever go to Taiwan :)
@@VictorLaforteza For sure will! It's on the list for sure, but it's a LOOONG list 😅😂
Appreciate the time and effort you put into this!
Great job Victor. Inspiring stuff. Which light equipment did you use to create the background round shaped light?
Thanks! It’s a projector mount from nanlite!
Nice! Question, I noticed you mention you have film lut packs, but you didn’t mention anything about filming in Slog yourself, do you film in log?
always in SLOG3 :)
@@VictorLaforteza victor! Thank you so much! I’m new to the “log scene” if you have a video on filming in log and how you use your luts I’ll be checking it out!! Thanks man! 💪😎
@@TheBrandonLeeCook sweet! there's quite a bit of tutorials on my channel so feel free to check those out :)
This place is so beautiful
I am going to buy A7IV for videos and this video is clearly helpful for me, Is this a right choice for cinematic videos my budget is not more than $2,500 for body, Thanks mate :)
Anytime! Excited for you to get your camera! 🙌🏽
I use A7C 24-70 lens and only shoot on automatic lol i'm looking to up my travel videos but I'm no good at it and bringing a lot of gears is not my cup of tea....thanks for the video. I like your angle skills 🙂
Wow I loved that! Will definitely try some of the tipps out on our long trip this summer. Du you mind me asking the name of the first song you used?
amazing! hope they help you out on your trip!! the song is Letting you go by De Lune
For holidays I have bought now the small ZVE1 and I really love it 😍 my bigger FX6 and the crane 3s would be a little bit too big for this 😂
100% and holidays you don't wanna carry an FX6 😂😂
@@VictorLaforteza definitely no 😂
Why am i watching this when i don’t even have $5k in the bank lol
Haha you don’t need all that gear. Tips apply even if just your phone.
Really nice footage Victor.
Thanks Joe! I appreciate you dropping by 🙏🏼
My issue with this is that my journey stops being about travelling and begins to feel like just another chapter of work.
Nice!!!!!!!!!, Which Picture Profile did you use? this is giving me vibes to pick my A7III back up and go shooting
Slog3 :) the a7iv would do good on slog2!
top notch production quality, what was the font name that you have used?
Thanks! it's bebas neue

@@VictorLaforteza hhaha thank you man
Maraming Salamat ulit Victor! Perfect timing before we travel. Ingat!
You're welcome bro! Safe travels to your next destination!!
Great video for a beginner like me, thanks!
Definitely one of the best!
victor you are so talented my bro
Thank you 🙌🏽🙌🏽
How do you take care of permits to shoot? Are all locations friendly to videographers?
Yup! You’re a tourist so people don’t mind. Just be mindful of no filming signs or if you’re unsure, you can ask any staff around.
doing a road trip from germany to france in september and I'm already thinking about what I can shoot there.
great video, helped a lot!
Amazing!! safe travels and enjoy your time there!
Great great hands on tutorial
Great job Victor! and thanks for sharing. Maybe something that can be also considered is sound. Especially if it will be used as a meaningful component of the film. Having a small camera mic or sound recorder would make a great difference.
Thank you dude! Absolutely sound is half the video!! Good audio /sound is crucial
just got back from a trip to indonesia with my own a7iv,, fortunately I was using most of these tips in my own way
Amazing!! I hope you had some great shots in Indonesia. Beautiful country.
great looking footrage!
Love the vid! I notice my AWB is super orange when filming with my Sony cameras (A7IV, FX3, ZV E1). You haven't had this issue?
hmm I haven't had super orange but a bit warm for sure! Easy fix especially for 10 bit footage. How's the ZVE1 btw?!
Aamzing tips love your style
Good tips Victor!
Good stuff as always, gonna try my hand at making one of these in London today!
Nice!!! Which part of London are you off to?!
@@VictorLaforteza First time so I'm sticking to Central, visiting Kensington area. Getting the feel of the city before heading off to Stockholm
@@NotLoopine Amazing!! hope you enjoy your trip!!
Awesome video. Motivating me to get started making videos
@@VictorLaforteza yeah bro!!! 🔥
Awesome video. I'm curious - in the Bangkok footage, are you using Log or standard color profile? Thanks
P.S. I live in bangkok and you showed many of my favorite places in the city!
Bangkok is so fun!!!! 90% of them are in slog3! some are shot in s-cinetone to get some low ISO shots for the bright day light (i didnt bring an ND filter so I had to compensate somewhere)
@@VictorLaforteza thanks for the reply
Great video! What is the opening song? Is it on spotify? Really diggin it.
Yeah I think so! We licensed through musicbed and the song is Letting You Go by De Lune. They're an amazing duo!
Hi Victor, great work as always! Which mic do you use to record audio from the surroundings?
This is something I'm actually working on! I just use the in camera audio. I feel like I'd just add them in post if things didn't work out with the built in mic but maybe a shotgun mic would be great. It just makes the camera a bit more bulky.
I didnt know they had Boots pharmacy shops outside of the UK
Great content - thanks for sharing! I was wondering do you ever get nervous, or get into trouble when flying a drone in foreign/busier cities? I know just in the US it can get hairy with needing a license and stuff, so I can only imagine it being just as difficult in other countries as well.
I don't bring drones anymore! It just takes too much time and getting permits is a pain for little gain.. (unless it's a professional shoot) everything drone shot was from storyblocks! but when I brought them before, I always get nervous even if I have proper permits especially with FPV.
@@VictorLaforteza ah, makes sense! Thanks for answering so quick. Great work as always, brother.
Thank you for sharing. We hope you enjoy Thailand
We loved it there!!! Amazing food, culture, and impeccable hospitality.
The color grading though 👌
Thanks dude! long time no talk!! Hope you're doing great 🙌
to me what makes something feel like a movie scene is the emotion, not the cinematography. You achieve good cinematography, but in film, a story, with a character, and emotion is necessary
I completely agree! This was more like to get that high quality video but to immerse the video with more story character and emotional journey is the true "cinema"!!
The art of letting go. Great tip that I need to apply for myself 😅
Unless it’s a paid job… let it go!! Hahaha but yeah we tend to really find the best shot and ignore being in the moment. Less stress that way!
Would this be possible with a Fuji xt-3?
Been subbed for a while and like your content
Any camera pretty much. You just need to have good composition and exposure!
Which bag do you use to carry your camera and gimbal around during the day?
Wandrd Prvke!
I'm a 3D artist and this video inspired me so much that now I wanna recreate all the shots in 3D lol
What movies? This footage looks good, but I'd be interested to know what we're likening it to in cinema.
Nothing in particular, just inspired by natural lighting, decent location, and great composition found in various movies.
Hey victor, love the vids man thanks for sharing! Quick queston, do you use an ND fliter for those day time shots?
I usually do! an ND 16 is enough for me but if you like convenience a quality VND would work. This trip I actually forgot my ND so I had to compensate by using the lower extended ISO for SLOG3
@@VictorLaforteza ah!!! Got it, thanks so much!
I am buying the Sony A7IV to go with my Nikon Z9 and a few other cameras that I have in my rental fleet. I am starting a company in Panama City Beach, Florida called Camera Leader to rent cameras and lenses to peeps like you.
Welcome to Thailand! As I lived here I can say most of the time “I” overheat much earlier before the camera 😂
That was definitely the case for me as well 😂😂 nothing beats a cold drink and AC
hey victor! whats that lens flare transition thing you have going on? i really like it
It’s a film burn that I got from a free asset pack from artlist. They usually give it away during the holidays if you have a subscription
What VND filter do you currently use? Your last video about NDs was the haida 2 in 1. Is that still your go to? also would that be enough on a sunny day. Thank you
Yup! still my go to :) It's definitely enough for a sunny day!
Definitely planning to travel to NY
Dude what is your walking and talking setup? I’m struggling to make my footage as perfect as yours
DJI mic attached to my sling bag! You can see it in between the straps. Viltrox 16mm 1.8 lens for the lens :)
Mr. Cinematic: base iso changes when you’re not in slog 3 🙃
So base iso in rec.709 is not 800/3200 anymore
5:31
Mr. know-it-all, I shot everything in slog3 and it doesn't change if you convert it to rec.709 in post. Let's see you shoot iso 100 on slog3. 5:39 there's a little ASSIST SLOG3? the PP8 on the bottom right?
the travel video style I always want to watch. and achieve
Hey! how awesome content bro! like, suscribe and bell activated. Did you use some filter for your lenses? any microphone?
usually black pro mist 1/8 and I was using the DJI mic for this video :)
yeah ! totally agree ! thanks for sharing !
I just lie on the ground and hope the satellite captures my photos , my gear is worth millions
Great job Victor! How to get so nice and soft image even in 4k?
I think diffraction played a big part of it looking softer. The A7IV 4k is super sharp and being on f/8-f/22 introduce diffraction which makes the lens softer. Not a good thing for photography but it seems like it works pretty good with video! Balancing out the super sharp 4k
@@VictorLaforteza thanks! I thought that faster lenses have move soft image. If I open the aperture I will get more light and more soft image but I see it's completely opposite.
@@VictorLaforteza what aperture was at @3:09?
@@gutandrew Well both are correct! at wide open it would be still sharp on the subject but everything else would be pleasingly soft vs diffraction, it makes everything soft that sometimes it ruins some shots! @3:09 talking head is at f/3.5 and then shot before that is f/16
Great video!
Very cool! What parts of this could only have been done on a Sony mirrorless versus ProRes on iPhone pro and dehancer?
You can do everything with an iPhone! Any camera for that matter. Exposure and composition is key to making an interesting frame!
@@VictorLaforteza fair! What motivates to carry large mirrorless gear then? What’s the benefits over iPhone
