    Nice video and lovely shots. One point, though. I am a professional lighting camera operator and DOP, working largely for the BBC in the UK. If we shoot a night scene, indeed we do light it to get the right mood and aesthetics and to get to an acceptable illumination level. We do not expose it bright and then bring it down in post. It's almost impossible to judge the look of a scene that way. We light it and expose it to look right, with a LUT if shooting log. Of course, lot's of refinement can be done in grading, but exposure wise, we nail it at the shooting stage.The extra lighting means we can shoot at reasonably low ISO's and shadow noise is not a problem. If matching to ambient light, then of course we light only to a level to get the subject balanced to the background. At home I have both an FX30 and an A6700. They are remarkable cameras and lift APS-C to a new level.

      Thank you and thanks for sharing! This is good industry insight! I’d love to learn how to do it with hitting the right exposure at the shooting stage! I’ve tried numerous exposure levels even shooting at middle grey and couldn’t get a good clean shot with the fx30 / a6700. With the fx3, I definitely could but struggling still with the fx30 :(

    Thank you for this. I started off with photography with a Canon EOS250D (which is still an amazing beginners camera) and realized what kind of thing i wanted for my photography.
    It was Lowlight Photography and street for the most part. The 250D Is not good at all with lowlight and has no Clog in the camera. So finally being able to AFFORD an upgrade i see that the 6700 is almost good all around for a lot of situations and Sony's continuous Innovations on technology in their rigs make it a perfect camera for me at least

    One key asset is to have an ok monitor, but crucially with a luminence waveform display. That way you know exactly what levels you are recording. Histogram doesn't cut it. Zebras are a pretty reliable way of knowing when you are hitting burn out and really good at getting face tones exposed correctly.

    • @sbozinovic
      @sbozinovic 9 месяцев назад

      Although the waveform is a great tool, on a small monitors it isvery difficult to read it. Maybe the best exposure tool is the false color or ei color, recently. Nevertheless, in the absence of those tools, since the zebras can be manually set to whatever level you desire, they can be quite a qood asset to know the signal level, albeit partially. And, on the fast run and gun shoots I found them, and maybe false color if I have the time to switch it on and off, more useful then waveform... and quite easier to read.

    You might wanna do your CST through the actual cst in resolve. LUTs are quite destructive and should be mostly used for representing the final image. Resolve can also automatically turn your slog3 images to rec.709 without the use of luts

    • @VictorLaforteza

    first of all, thank you for this video. I picked up an a6700 recently and keep finding myself coming back to this video. one question I had was regarding the 'exposure workflow' section.. you mentioned that you film in shutter priority mode. do you have a video that goes over your settings for filming specifically? the way my camera is setup I have my '1' and '2' dials in manual mode and the only difference is if I'm shooting in 24p or 60p. I want to make sure I'm filming in the correct settings at all time, mostly for run and gun scenarios

    Agree with everyone else on here, you're too good at this bro! Lol at the 89.3%. But yes, low light on the FX30 has been good enough for my workflow. You know what I'd like to see a video of? How you nail your white balance in run and gun situations. I know you said you were leaving it at 5600k for travel situations. But are there other instances where you dial in your WB by eye? If so, do you have any tips? Been using AWB for the longest time and have recently been dabbling in setting it myself, but I still need more practice!

    • @VictorLaforteza
      @VictorLaforteza  Год назад +1

      Ouuuuu this will be a video on it's own for sure! Three things I look for with white balance are skin tones, white lights, or grey objects. I would suggest filming these on actual 5600k first and then familiarizing yourself with the camera screen and how they project proper colours. Once you know, it's a good reference as to what you should be seeing with adjusted white balance in post. You'll get a good sense of what needs to be cool or warm or what you can push and pull in post! I always recommend the color passport or a grey card but in run and gun, we simply dont have time especially if it's a time constrained documentary!

In an earlier video posted around a year ago you said that in low light you should set the metering tool to highlights only, and then keep the exposure within 0 to +1. Here you set it to +1.7. Another question. Are you not using the gamma assist tool anymore? Are you intead using the r709 Lut, and if so do you still set zebras to 70 +/- 5 then? Thanks for all your great work and inspiration.

    Hi Victor, great video! During your example 1, I saw you make a node for a CST, but it didn't look like you put the CST effect over the node, but just applied a LUT. Am I right about this? I have always dragged the CST effect on to the node, but should I only be applying a LUT instead? Thanks so much.

    • @VictorLaforteza
      @VictorLaforteza  Год назад

      It has a similar output since I used the official sony lut. Both works using the CST effect or Conversion LUTs (i.e. the Sony REC.709 conversion LUT). So really, it's up to you which one you want to use! CST effect is always neutral but some conversion luts can make your footage look like a certain camera.

    Hey, I'm a fan of your colourgrading videos. Do you think prores 422hq 10bit gives much more options in colourgrading than h264 10bit 422 ~ 200mbps. Like I'm a newbie to all this, have some practise but not much, and I want to know is this really a gamechanger (added to many cameras for last years, fuji xh2/s, lumix s5iix) or the difference is not that big and there is no big point in paying additional hundreds of bucks for it

    • @VictorLaforteza
      @VictorLaforteza  Год назад +1

      Two main considerations for it. First is that prores will give you smoother editing experience. Second is that it will be better but not by much especially if your deliverables are only for online!

    Hi. Bro id like to know. Ill be new to slog3. Ive seen your video about cine ei but that's a year ago. I wanted to ask about the rec 709. Is it passable to just use the rec 709 and be done with it. Not using the footage for professional work but only for my own. I'll be using it run and gun so i don't want to take time to color grade. And also i want a more filmic look so what can you recommend rec709 or the rec709(800)?
