      As a non-professional photographer, I did regret picking up the A7Cii. For the price of the body and the the tamron 28-200 f2.8-5.6 lens I have, I could've gotten an A6700 with the tamron 17-70 f2.8 plus either 3 sigma f1.4 primes, or a viltrox pro f1.2 and a sigma f1.4

  • @Thirsty_Fox
    @Thirsty_Fox 3 месяца назад +36

    Very helpful comparison. Summary for my use: a6700 for general use, a7IV (hopefully soon A7V) for client/event/wedding. With the full-frame, I get about one stop better noise and about one stop of extra aperture (shallower depth of field) which allows for the f/2.8 zooms to be a bit more useful, plus dual card slots. However, it's all bigger, heavier, and more expensive. For general use, I prefer the size, weight, and cost of the a6700 -- the performance is incredible, especially the autofocus and dynamic range. Fast primes like the Sigma 56 f/1.4 or Viltrox 27 f/1.2 produce incredible images, even in low light. I don't want to risk my expensive client-focused gear for personal use and the difference in quality is negligible. For travel especially, I prefer to get more in-focus so something like the tiny Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 works a treat. Dynamic range is on-par with many full-frame cameras, mostly older ones but even some new ones that have traded off DR for sensor readout (such as the Z6iii). So for me, it's about perfect and works as a backup or second camera for client work, too. I just wish it had the a7RV tilt+flippy mechanism. And a second card slot, even a micro SD for jpegs or something.
    I hope Sony comes out with the a7V soon because the lack of 4k60 without crop and AI autofocus are missed. I also find the photo colour science of the a6700 and aCII to be quite a bit improved over the a7IV so I'm hopeful that gets updated as well.

    Here in the Philippines, I find the compactness a significant advantage. The public places here are a bit allergic to professional looking cameras (typically large bodies and evfs are in the middle). Thus I remember being called out and asked for a permit using an a7IV, even for the sake of photoshooting my family lunch and not even commercial purpose. They keep implying that the place holds the right to ask permit and deny the use of pro cameras for privacy reasons.
    Now, I borrowed an a7c from a friend and been to almost all public places shooting random strangers and places without ever being approached by security.
    Well I guess for the disadvantage of ergonomics, I'll go for compact this time (a7cii / a7cr) for that reason alone of not dealing with any weird prohibitions while retaining the power of full frames.

      That’s why now for travel I use X100Vi, and an X100V before that. Ironically, when I use the Little X100Vi, people don’t cover their faces or get mad, instead they smile or give me a peace sign. In Europe, I get the mean eye even using my phone camera, but not the little silver camera. Weird but it’s what happens. I think people think I’m some eccentric harmless weird guy using an old film camera. Little do they know they are only half right. 😂

    Love your comparison. Appreciate the thoughts and effort you have put into this. I have commented in one of your video about this before and my response is still the same. A6700 is more than enough for most people. Don't get caught up in the "Go FF or go home". It is not at all necessary for most people who are not making a living out of camera but this does not mean it can't do professional work though...it is more than capable. If you do not shoot on both sensors and do a comparison like this then nobody is going to be able to tell if the picture is shot on which sensor size. (provided that good lenses are used).

    I bought both - returned the A6700, kept the A7Cii and recently bought a SECOND one! What gets lost in this review is the real world usability between the two cameras. The A6700 only provides 3 command wheels, while the A7Cii has 4. For people that like to assign Exposure Compensation to one of them, the A7Cii is the better option because it allows you to retain the 3 other parameters (ISO, Tv, Av). Another feature that is found in the A7Cii and not the A6700 is Flexible Exposure Mode. For anyone that shoots hybrid, this mode is a GAME CHANGER! It allows you to independently control your exposure separate from the stills settings - it essentially disables the mode dial on the top. I also found the EVF and screen to be better on the A7Cii compared to the A6700. Lastly, is the overall build quality - the A6700 feels very cheap in the hand vs. the A7Cii feels solid. Overall, they are both great cameras, but in the end, the A7Cii is well worth the premium compared to the A6700. If you are shooting mostly video, I'd go for the FX30 which is EXCELLENT!

    • @Joh146
      @Joh146 3 месяца назад +3

      It may be that they prefer the A7C II, but I can't understand it. In my opinion, the A7C ii is a niche camera for those who want to travel with full-frame and compact, who only buy very compact lenses to use them like others use their Leica. But screwing large portrait or telephoto lenses onto it completely ruins the size and weight advantage of the system. And when it comes to real handling advantages, an A7 IV should be considerably easier to use.

    • @jeremyg9305
      @jeremyg9305 Месяц назад +2

      A6700 has separate settings for video and stills and also slow mo video though?? Also, 4 wheels would probably be a bigger difference back when the touch screen was unusable, but exposure compensation is super easy to set there and you get a bunch of extra control on the "hidden" exposure / flash screen.
      Do you use exposure comp a lot in full manual??

    • @RandumbTech
      @RandumbTech Месяц назад

      @@jeremyg9305 Yes, you can store different settings, but without Flexible Exposure Mode, the camera will behave based on what mode the top dial is in. If I am shooting aperture priority for stills and decide to flip over to video, it would also be in aperture priority mode and I'd have to then move the dial over to M. I'd have to do the same thing when switching back to stills. It's cumbersome. With Flexible Exposure Mode, it essentially disables the mode dial when shooting video. I do not use the touch screen on any of my cameras other than to set focus point so using it for exposure comp is not a realistic solution. I use exposure comp all the time when shooting in Flexible Exposure Mode. I never know which setting I'm going to lock (Av, Tv, ISO) and use the Exposure Comp to dial it in just right. I don't see many people talking about Flexible Exposure Mode - it's such a great feature!!

    • @jeremyg9305
      @jeremyg9305 Месяц назад +1

      @@RandumbTech Ohh, yes, that does seem like a reasonable addition. To clarify, that is like being in Manual mode, but being able to lock one setting and have the other in auto? I mean you can always have ISO in auto, so I guess you would be able to have shutter and aperture in auto and have exposure controlled that way - while being in manual mode?
      Is the gain just not having to flip to those other modes, but you still have to change things to auto? And if you went back to stills, and wanted to control that auto value, you'd still have to change it back to a set value right?

    Ironically, this video convinced me that I should get the full-size A7 (probably A7R) rather than anything else. I care about all the features that were better on the full-frame, and didn't care at all about all the others where the APS-C was better. I never shoot video, for example. For me, resolution, dynamic range, and low-light performance (along with not having a crop factor for wide lenses) are more important than the others.
    So.. Good video! Just took the opposite conclusion for myself :)

    • @Joh146
      @Joh146 3 месяца назад +1

      I would think about it again. The full-shape solution is hereditarily more expensive, heavier and larger. It has a lowlight advantage of one exposure level, which the denoising programs compensate for without any problems. In the wide angle you can get very far down (15 mm full format equivalence), many professional landscape photographers shoot with APS-c. The dynamic range of full-frame cameras has tended to decline in recent years, APS-c is very close. Full-frame is most important for professional portrait photographers, wedding photographers, concert photographers or deep sky photographers. I wouldn't switch to full-frame because of the advantages mentioned above, but I also like the range advantage with telephoto and the additional depth of field with macro.

    I fully agree with your review. I switched from Nikon 750 with good glass and I do not regret it. The Nikon always stayed home because of the weight and size of the set up. Most of the time I went out with my little Sony RX100 III instead.
    When I decided to go mirrorless, I considered the A7CII because it was full frame but the cost of the camera (and good lenses) made me decide to go back to APSC (I had a Nikon 7100 before). Yes, I miss the low light performance but it's so easy to get rid of the noise these days that I still value more the small size and light weight of my current set up. Now I bring everything in my trips and the RX100 also comes but as a nice back-up.

  • @drchtct
    @drchtct 3 месяца назад +17

    Keep in mind most users will get 1.4 APSC primes while they will get 1.8 FF primes as they are very similar in size. So when comparing ISO, a6700 has a 2/3 stop advantage which negates any a7c low light advantage. If you want the full ISO advantage you have to put massive 1.4 lenses on your small a7c, completely killing the point of the smaller body. The a7c also has the EFCS which degrades your bokeh quality. Add the huge crop at 4k60, I would say the a6700 is the better camera for everyone, not just non-professionals.

The difference is that on the a6700 you already buy lenses that calculate the crop in. On the a7cii you’d need to buy and carry multiple lenses e.g. a giant 24mm 1.4 to get what the 23mm f1.4 on APSC gets you in 4k60, and a 35mm f1.8 for the uncropped shots in 4k60. The A7cii has only a half mechanical shutter (EFC).
    If you use electronic shutter, the A7cii sensor is very slow, you may get deformation even for portrait, see Derrière la caméra's wedding video with the A7iv used in electronic shutter mode. The A6700 sensor is 3 times faster, which reduces this risk.

    While I agree the fact that a6700 is a great camera especially with the latest ultra cheap yet performing f1.7 and f1.8 lenses from Chinese manufacturers, the f1.2 primes are expensive,large and heavy and yet there are really really good f1.8 budget light primes in full frame world. So then the additional megapixels and more future full frame lenses makes A7c ii very appealing. You can also get the 15mp crop when needed. Better video heat performance in general too. Unless someone needs 4k 120, wild life photography with 70-350, I would like a7c ii a bit more thsn than a6700

    • @rsat9526
      @rsat9526 3 месяца назад +1

      These F1.2 APSC lens are tact sharp from F1.2 and it is also not just about DOF. It is the light amount you get too so comparing FF F1.8 to these lenses are not 100% fair. For APSC you also get the options to go light when needed with zoom lenses while on FF your zoom lenses are going to be huge and expensive with no alternative apart from using apsc lens and get less MP from the sensor. All in all, it is what the person wants from the camera and less of the technical details since modern camera these days are good enough for most scenarios anyway so I’d rather get cheaper gears that perform similarly to the much more expensive ones with things I don’t actually need but “want”.

It is approximately the same cost to purchase a 40mm f/2.5 which have almost two stops less light at widest aperture, meaning you can compensate your ISO by two stops and thus negating most of the advantages of the a7c ii for which you would pay double

As a long time APS-C user, have had a6400 since it came out and about to move to a6700, I did think briefly about the a7cII but this has proved to me it isn't worth it. So I just bought a Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art for my a6700 to get that 135mm-ish F2 look, and the lens itself weights 625g, bringing the combo to 1154g. I really don't see myself carrying this lens often, or switching to a FF camera (a7C II) and F1.4 lenses entirely, because the weight is putting a strain to my wrist quickly. F2 lenses would be the right choice, but then the advantages compared to APS-C F1.4 lenses are mostly gone. And in case of the 85mm F1.4 on APS-C: I'd need a 135mm F1.8 on FF, which would be dang heavy and expensive... So yes, FF is better, but it makes zero sense, at least for me...

      For zooms, not so one sided. You can of course use the FF, but you pay its price (also the size). I am using Tamron 17-70 f2.8 and previously used Sigma 18-50mm f2.8. Both are incredible lenses and love them equally, but I am not 100% they are the absolute best because probably FF lenses, especially GM would beat them.

    I think the problem with APS-C is that you really need fast aperture lenses to keep ISO low. 1600 is the highest I would go, personally 1000 would be the point I wouldn't want to go over.
    On my first camera, Canon's M50 II, ISO performance was really not great. I upgraded to an A7 II FF about a year later and it was quite a substantial difference, even though this camera is about 10 years old.
    On the other hand, APS-C gear is a lot more expensive. The Viltrox 27/1.2 is about 600€ in my region which is significantly less than any 1.2 lens for Sony FF.
    If you're doing mainly nature shots, you will nevertheless value the advantage of more MP (be it 33 or in my case 42 with the 7R III). Video however will for sure be easier to handle with the 6700 because Sony's stabilization for FF isn't really amazing as soon as you start to move the camera while shooting video.

    I do not understand why Sony cameras are unable to go beyond a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000. For reference, the Fujifilm cameras that I use commercially go up to a ridiculous 1/180.000s. This omission is practically relevant as it is quite common to require shutter speeds of 1/8000 and beyond, especially on bright lenses, not to mention when shooting backlit portraits. Sony cameras are such fantastic workhorses, yet there are such unexplainable shortcomings that could probably even be fixed in firmware.

Both cameras are great choices, I eventually went for the A7C II mostly for the low light performance for my youtube videos and I am extremely happy with its performance!
