Bought the Sony A9iii after watching your video. I got scared during the introduction, thinking you're regretting it, and it's past my return window. I really should stop watching videos about this camera. I'm hoping to learn more about the fact that it's a new system for me after shooting SOny A1, A7iv, Fuji GFX 100s, and Sony A7r4, I thought going back to a 24mp camera was a sacrifice. I bought the A9iii because I was commissioned to shoot for a modelling agency and need the smaller jpeg files for runway shows and the speed and lighting setup. Overall, nice video! Thanks, Jake!
Thank you so much for this review. I was debadting between the two cameras since A9 III's introduction as I do have the need for the Silent Electronic Shutter (Blackout free is a nice bonus) to operate with flash for event photography. Based on the price and the new Global shutter I thought I would choose the A9 III; however, after shooting the A7R V for a year now I have come to appriciate the benifit of the high megapixel sensor delivers without the need of swapping out lenses in a pinch with it's cropping ability. As you pointed out in your review the base ISO for A9 III starts at ISO 250 which is not ideal for my need to use/cary a variable ND filter, add another filter infront of the good quality lenses all the time to shoot Run & Gun outdoor events. At the end, I was able to aquire a used A1 at lesser cost than a new A9 III that still has 2+ years of local/international transferable warranty. I am very satisfied with its performance over the A7R V especially my A7R V's LCD screen is 99% in the fully closed position. Thanks again for this comparison review.
Fantastic to hear about you getting an A1 for a deal! Enjoy and you’re welcome. I’m kind of surprised I got this out before most the other camera channels
Interesting to read, I am looking at it the other way around, love the a9 electronic shutter with the burst sound, this keeps me control the burst very nicely. Rented an a7R5, and guess what: it does not have that feature (had to switch the electronic shutter off). Really weird 🧐
Great video. A1 for me all day. I like having the extra resolution so that you can still get a crisp image when cropping. Also 20-30fps is plenty when shooting stills. The only thing I wish the A1 had is the ability to track different subject types e.g. car, train etc. Other than that, it’s solid.

use the A1 for work from architecture/interiors as 50MP has sufficient resolution for detail crop. The higher resolution enables you to edit easier and remove artifacts. For most sports these crazy FPS are plenty, in fact i reckon most pros do not use 30fps as this becomes too many photos to go through. 15fps is plenty. I am not sure even if A1 MK2 came out a big enough reason to upgrade camera based on work needs.
Hi Jake. Thanks for the comparison. The only thing that might sway me to the A9 is that the global shutter gets rid of LED flicker. A bain of my life when filming concerts. Then again, if the chopper shot at 14:06 was on the A1, it does a great job, almost global shutter straightness on the rotor blades.
... just for your information and as a topic for the live stream, Jake: CineD tested the a9 III and the camera performed very well. So you were right in your review. 😉
I have exactly the same, will wait for the a1 II for the additional eye AF modes and all the other improvements- right now the a9 is such a fantastic device, enjoy it every time I pick it up!
So these are two cameras I’ve been contemplating getting. I have a Sony a7 IV with primarily all Sony lenses. I do mainly sports photography, swimming, football, basketball. The 10 fps from the a7 IV isn’t cutting it. I have also looked at a used Sony a9 II as well but they currently don’t get firmware updates anymore. Right now I’m seeing used Sony a1 for $5,249-$5,799 with used Sony a9 III going for $5,829… I plan on keeping my a7 IV because I plan on running a 2 camera setup.
This is a great comparison review, your side by side photos/videos are the best I've seen to date. Thank you very much for making this video, appreciate all the hard work, time and effort you put into it, as I said, I think this is really the best comparison review I've seen comparing the A1 and A9III.
Thanks Josh! yeah I was surprised by the difference in colors too. I definitely could have matched them up with better color grading but in a comparison I prefer to let it be so people can see as much differences as possible
@@JakeSloan For sure! I always just adjust contrast and saturation to get them close but leave the colors alone so everyone can see the difference. I noticed a big color difference in your jacket. Which camera do you think is more accurate to real life?
@@JakeSloan Thanks! before I would use only Nikon D850, sold it along with all lenses and I've been waiting to go mirrorless, now i have the chance to change family. Mostly I shoot landscape and wildlife, but a picture to family & friedns every now and then doesnt hurt.
I don’t think I could give up resolution. As much as I love global shutter, resolution in photos is very important to me. If I was a sports photog, the A9iii would be the champ.
I agree 100% will wait for upgrade to the A1 I have the sony A7s and the A1. A7s rocks for auroras. I have been testing the A1 for Auroras. Shooting it in the 8K. Now just waiting for a super killer display. Thanks for the videos and information you provide.
Great review. I'm an amateur with an a7rv, which I love. However, I really enjoy wildlife photography and the a7rv just doesn't have it for wildlife in motion. I just picked up a used a1 and, although I prefer the a7rv ergonomically, the focus abilities and speed of the a1 make it the clear winner for wildlife, esp. w/ the higher resolution compared to the a9iii.
I actually watched your video review of the A9 III before making my decision to purchase one. I found it very well thought out and presented. I also watched the Northrup’s, Matt Granger, Jan Wegener’s, Peta Pixels. You name it I probably watched them. I shot with an A7 IV for 3 years. Prior to that an a6000 for 8 years. So I have been ensconced in Sony’s ecosystem for a long time. I thought of the A1 a lot before getting this A9 III and also thought about waiting for the A1 Mark II but after witnessing a friend of mine who bought the A9 III and saw what it could do, I was blown away. Mainly by the outstanding AF. So I got the A9 III and the A7RV for the resolution and sold my A7 IV. I also recently acquired the 300 GM and both Sony TCs because I wanted better IQ. I have not been disappointed. I shoot mainly handheld that’s why the image stabilization was really important for me. Especially for video. I’m surprised that Sony did not drop the price of their current A1 as it is over 3 years old and people like Nikon are releasing cameras like the Z8 at 4k which has really been a popular seller. Like you, I feel when Sony releases an A1 Mark II it will be something. But as to when that happens? Nobody knows. My friend even thinks they won’t. As the current A1 is still popular. At least they should do a form factor and tech refresh. Anyways, thanks for your excellent videos. They helped me make up my mind. 👍🏻
In my case I have just got the A9iii, but not to replace my A1, but as second body. They are both fantastic cameras and ideal for wildlife photography which covers most of my shooting. For me what I miss most from the A1 when using the A9iii is the 50mp to allow plenty of crop, although using Topaz AI to upscale photos after editing has reduced this problem. The main thing which makes the A9iii better for me is the Pre-capture. On virtually every photo shoot I get pictures with the A9iii I would just of miss if using the A1, as with wildlife action often occurs without warming particularly with birds. The 120fps of the A9iii I have not found necessary to use so far, although I am sure it will come in useful occasionally - however I have my A9iii by default set-up shooting at 30fps then the buffer allows for a generous 12 seconds continuous burst. I will certainly be keeping my A1 until a mark 2 version comes out and continue using it when I want maximum resolution.
Couple of notes from my using it at an event: one kind of funny one, using silent mode is a bit dangerous when using anything over low speed shooting. You forget that 30 or 60 even is still really fast. But more seriously, shooting well planned bursts at nearly 8k 12 bit color is really under discussed. you can only get 1ish seconds (4seconds real time) of slow mo burst but it really turns into some great footage. Two, the noise actually is not bad at all, the pictures have turned out great in extremely low light, as has the video. Three, I do miss the resolution of the a7R V, i'm so used to shooting slightly wide for room to crop, and 25mp is pretty noticeable. And I think, finally, the autofocus felt actually a good leap ahead of even the a7R V. I really can't wait for a1ii, I will keep the a9iii with plans to shift to a1ii when it comes out.
@@JakeSloan Yeah it would be hard to choose if I already had an a1 but I think it's better value than a new a1, would have to find a great deal on a used one to choose it over this.
So on the fence, I shoot dog sports, like agility, lure coursing as well as birds. I currently have an a9 (24mp) and I am finding the newer Nikon and Canon cameras give more detail in the fur, so I am considering the a1 for the mp's to get that detail. However, the a9iii is really more suited to sports photography and it has less MP's so files are not going to be huge. I am a bit worried about 50mp files and 6000-8000 pictures from a 2 or 3 day event. Just to make things more confusing, the Nikon z8 can now accept sony glass using an adaper and it is a lot less than the a9iii or a1.
The A9 is looking like the grown up version of my A7iv. I like that the ergonomics are the same. Ironic that you love that flip out screen, just like the one I had on my old A77, 15 years ago! I think I just persuaded myself that the A9 rather than A1, unless an updated version comes out before my next camera purchase in 3 months time. Would be interested in the overheating performance. I can get overheating on my A7 after less than an hour if it is warm (I am in Australia as you know, but going to Antarctica in November).
oh wow, that should be fun to take the camera on! I have had the a1 overheat on me a couple times in warm weather and I was pushing it pretty hard, I haven't had a chance to test the A9III in that regard. Cheers
@@JakeSloan Actually, I will also revisit the FX3 as it is 2/3 the price of the A9 iii. Regarding the Antarctic. Have you ever made a video on the best way to expose for snow and have the wildlife exposure manageable? Both for S-Cinetone and Slog-3.
Yes because the A9III also has a higher base iso. Nothing in those shots was to show image quality differences only differences in the auto focus in extreme lighting.
Peta pixel says a9 has the dynamic range, noise and low light of an apsc camera because of the global shutter and the missing dual iso which makes this camera a no no to me for this kind of money.
If I can afford an A9iii, i would pick it up right away. I want to go Global Shutter now for events because I used entirely E-shutter. Being silent and shooting away without anyone noticing is huge for me. And also great for the videograpehrs because they dont have to hear the "click" noise like crazy. Even though I can't afford an a9iii, for sure the GS sensor will come to sony's other cameras which then i will pick up!
@@JakeSloan oh yes, judging from Sony's past roadmaps. Waiting out for the future a7V, a7RVI and FX3-ii that will likely have global shutters. Sony has to go Global Shutter on these cameras because they have maxed out the Rolling Shutter models already.
I would love to see the A1 ii come out with a global shutter. Regardless of any Dynamic Range reduction. I would take that any day. a 60 fps 50 MP global shutter sensor would be INSANE. It would instantly be the best wildlife and sports camera. making the a9 iii the budget sports / highspeed camera. Which is where the totem pole should be :)
Huge, you can still run into flicker if you shutter speed is higher and a multiple of the the flicker frequency but it's much easier to avoid with the a9III
Bottom line then is if you are willing to wait on the a9 ii then you may be rewarded. A1 being the top line model should incoporate the AI processor, global shutter and 8k filming making it a cinemstographers choice of camera.
I'm so stuck on what to get. I have a A7RV and an A7SIII. I shoot a lot of sports so I want to finally have a high speed camera. I got the A7RV as my A7III was dying and I really like the high resolution which is why I want the A1. But I also really, really don't want to spend that much on a camera that must be getting a successor soon. I'm thinking of getting the A9III and making that my main sports camera with the A7RV as my second camera. Then getting the A1 Mark II as my main and demote the A9III to second camera and retire the A7RV to my portrait only camera. Or I get the A1 then the A1 Mark II and use those as my two sports cameras. I don't know what I'm doing. I did get to try the A9III at the reveal event and I did just try the A1 recently shooting minor league baseball and it was great so I may just go with that. My main concern is having autofocus that still lands me the shots I need when the action gets too crazy to keep up with.
yea it sucks cause of course indoor baskeball sometimes is when u need antiflicker and want precapture.. but yep u gotta turn precapture off to turn it on.. also precapture turns off AF proirity as well. u can only use AF release @@JakeSloan
No mention of this issue in any reviews I have watched and I am very thankful that you are mentioning it as that would be one of the important feature I thought would be implemented into the system if I was to buy the A9 III. With your current experiences, have you ended up with images with flicker effect in the pre capture mode? Are they bad/visible or un usable?
no real world issue yet.. but i have not shot in venue yet where i would experience it bad. you can look at my video i have on my page of me setting the a9iii for first use. i was experince some color change from electronic score board. had to turn on antiflicker to see if it change it. i did. but also had to turn off precapture.. will test it more @@Jeo-What

So yes I’ll work on a review!
As someone who does severe weather / lightning photography and video shooting I must say that the A9III is looking a lot better than the A1 for my use cases. Finally we can capture lightning bolts in their full glory, without any rolling shutter artifacts!

I have exactly the same, will wait for the a1 II for the additional eye AF modes and all the other improvements- right now the a9 is such a fantastic device, enjoy it every time I pick it up!
I think the a1II might be a ways off yet personally
So these are two cameras I’ve been contemplating getting. I have a Sony a7 IV with primarily all Sony lenses. I do mainly sports photography, swimming, football, basketball. The 10 fps from the a7 IV isn’t cutting it. I have also looked at a used Sony a9 II as well but they currently don’t get firmware updates anymore.
Right now I’m seeing used Sony a1 for $5,249-$5,799 with used Sony a9 III going for $5,829… I plan on keeping my a7 IV because I plan on running a 2 camera setup.
NICE
Definetly waiting for the A1 ii, there's a couple of things on the A9iii I'd like but there's nothing I really need enough to change from the A1
yep
Really great video and comparison it helps to choose wich one is the right
Glad it was helpful!
This is a great comparison review, your side by side photos/videos are the best I've seen to date. Thank you very much for making this video, appreciate all the hard work, time and effort you put into it, as I said, I think this is really the best comparison review I've seen comparing the A1 and A9III.
Thank you!
Great comparison Jake! It was interesting to see the differences in colors in video on the two cameras.
Now that the A1 II is out, which one is best for mostly landscape and wild life? if you had to choose only 1 camera for life.
if I only had to choose one between the A9III and the A1 II for landscape, wildlife and just about anything else I would definitely go for the A1 II.
Yeah same for me. The resolution of the a1 is just so dang good for so many things. Plus the 8k video doesn’t hurt 😉
@@JakeSloan The A1 was such a “WOW” camera when released. I suspect that’s why the A!ii hasn’t come yet. It had better be “WOW”.
Agreed I’m very curious to see what they manage to do to make it another “wow” camera. And also justify the likely 7,500.00+ price tag…
@@JakeSloan it will be 6500.00 and the other prices will fall.... if they want to stay competitive with other options out there.
Interesting. A9lll is a weird photo video camera hybrid. I'm keeping my A1. I like the screen better anyways.
agreed
I agree 100% will wait for upgrade to the A1 I have the sony A7s and the A1. A7s rocks for auroras. I have been testing the A1 for Auroras. Shooting it in the 8K. Now just waiting for a super killer display. Thanks for the videos and information you provide.
NICE, I've shot the aurora with the A1 a lot and it never fails to perform incredibly well in 8k
Nice aurora display in Fairbanks. Just arrived. Have two weeks to shoot here@@JakeSloan
Great review. I'm an amateur with an a7rv, which I love. However, I really enjoy wildlife photography and the a7rv just doesn't have it for wildlife in motion. I just picked up a used a1 and, although I prefer the a7rv ergonomically, the focus abilities and speed of the a1 make it the clear winner for wildlife, esp. w/ the higher resolution compared to the a9iii.
agreed and you have a great combo! I was shocked how well the A1 stands up to the A9III in focus capability still
I actually watched your video review of the A9 III before making my decision to purchase one. 👍🏻
Fantastic! I agree the A1 is still an incredibly powerful camera that they really dont need to release a new one
Hold for A1 2
agreed
This is the most well thought our "Sony channel" on RUclips, keep up the good work Jake!
Wow, thanks!
Thanks for doing this comparison. I’m sticking to my A1 for now. Happy shooting
you're welcome cheers!
thank you for the review, saved me some money 🙏🏼
Glad I could help!
Nice! I’d definitely love to have both if I could justify it but I just can’t at the moment
Agreed! And glad to hear your experience has been positive too
@@JakeSloan Yeah it would be hard to choose if I already had an a1 but I think it's better value than a new a1, would have to find a great deal on a used one to choose it over this.
I have 2 A1's so I'll probably hold out for the A1ii.
NICE
i so envy the lcd and the global shutter but keeping the A1 for now. im still very much happy with them.
likewise
So on the fence, I shoot dog sports, like agility, lure coursing as well as birds. I currently have an a9 (24mp) and I am finding the newer Nikon and Canon cameras give more detail in the fur, so I am considering the a1 for the mp's to get that detail. However, the a9iii is really more suited to sports photography and it has less MP's so files are not going to be huge. I am a bit worried about 50mp files and 6000-8000 pictures from a 2 or 3 day event. Just to make things more confusing, the Nikon z8 can now accept sony glass using an adaper and it is a lot less than the a9iii or a1.
yeah you want something with 24mp and a good lens
GREAT video, THANK YOU!. I will keep the A1, it is a beast of a camera! Waiting on the firmware update. Thanks again!
I cannot wait to see what the firmware update brings to the A1!!
@@JakeSloan DITTO!!!!
At this late stage do you envision Sony releasing an update for the A1?
Something wrong.Time 6:09 A1 4K 60P vs A9III 4K 30p . Light is light to sensor. So, is normal that Sony A9III i brighter in this case?
Yes because the A9III also has a higher base iso. Nothing in those shots was to show image quality differences only differences in the auto focus in extreme lighting.
Peta pixel says a9 has the dynamic range, noise and low light of an apsc camera because of the global shutter and the missing dual iso which makes this camera a no no to me for this kind of money.
not in my experience in using it, I have used a lot of APSC cameras and they don't perform nearly as well as this in low light etc...
I think global shutter will be making it's way into most cameras over the next few years for sure
@@JakeSloan oh yes, judging from Sony's past roadmaps. Waiting out for the future a7V, a7RVI and FX3-ii that will likely have global shutters. Sony has to go Global Shutter on these cameras because they have maxed out the Rolling Shutter models already.
When it comes to video it goes to the a9iii but photography is 100% a1 all the rest is extras
I agree in most cases except that I use 8k more than 4k 30 on the A1, but on photos the A1 is a beast and still king imo
Which is where the totem pole should be :)
agreed!!
Main thing for me is no flicker in video.... Thats a game changer, right? In Japan literally half of all lights flicker (and the other half dont)
Huge, you can still run into flicker if you shutter speed is higher and a multiple of the the flicker frequency but it's much easier to avoid with the a9III
Good info! Helpful to my internal debate RE: A9III
Nice! Which one are you going with?
Bottom line then is if you are willing to wait on the a9 ii then you may be rewarded. A1 being the top line model should incoporate the AI processor, global shutter and 8k filming making it a cinemstographers choice of camera.
true
Just wondering if you have updated to the newest firmware and what are your real life experiences and discoveries with it.
I have and I love it, fortunately I had no problems updating
Sony will never give you everything on both cameras.
true no camera company will
Agree✔️
It would be a huge challenge getting a global shutter read on 50mp. You'd be paying 4x as much for the camera with both
I'm so stuck on what to get.
I think you really would be happy with either one, but for me the A1 is still the best for most stuff until the A1 II is released
problem with a9iii with indoor, and sports, if you want to use antiflicker, you cant with precapture turned on.. disappointing
Oh dang I didn’t know that!
yea it sucks cause of course indoor baskeball sometimes is when u need antiflicker and want precapture.. but yep u gotta turn precapture off to turn it on.. also precapture turns off AF proirity as well. u can only use AF release @@JakeSloan
No mention of this issue in any reviews I have watched and I am very thankful that you are mentioning it as that would be one of the important feature I thought would be implemented into the system if I was to buy the A9 III. With your current experiences, have you ended up with images with flicker effect in the pre capture mode? Are they bad/visible or un usable?
no real world issue yet.. but i have not shot in venue yet where i would experience it bad. you can look at my video i have on my page of me setting the a9iii for first use. i was experince some color change from electronic score board. had to turn on antiflicker to see if it change it. i did. but also had to turn off precapture.. will test it more
@@Jeo-What
Hello Jake. Great video. I am also holding out for the A1ii. Do mostly wildlife and landscape and like the 50 megapixels. Any chance of a review of the new 300mm gm? Would especially appreciate your opinion on using with teleconverters. Just hit subscribe.
Thanks! I have been thinking about putting together a review of it. I need to get my hands on one again to go further in depth with it. In my original a9iii review almost all the photos and footage were from the 300 with and without the 2x TC. Overall fantastic lens amazing optical quality and lightweight for its reach. So yes I’ll work on a review!
As someone who does severe weather / lightning photography and video shooting I must say that the A9III is looking a lot better than the A1 for my use cases. Finally we can capture lightning bolts in their full glory, without any rolling shutter artifacts!
Absolutely fantastic for that
@@JakeSloan Have you tried? I've yet to see any global shutter storm footage from that camera. Perhaps you have some for us? Would love to see it before making such a huge investment.
I can’t wait to see the successor of the a1 becoming the absolute beast
absolutely
Hmmmmm. I would like to see a comparison video of A6700 and A9iii
hahahaha that would be quite a comparison!
I'll compare them for you, about $4000 comparison
I noticed blue is more teal on the a9iii, is it different post or is that the output of the cam 😊
It’s the output of the camera and my rather terrible color grading skills lol
Colors are a preference, nothing wrong with slight teal on the sky, one reason I like the chrome filter on the fujis 😁
Yet another great video. Great shootout on these 2 cameras.
Thanks for watching
I got a7r5, a74, a73, so im prolly gonna get the a93
Wow nice!!
So for video 4k which one of them has better focus reaction and tracking?
The A9III does especially for wildlife in video mode
Exceptional review Jake!
Thank you
If I may ask : how does the Nikon Z8 compares with the A1 in AF and IQ?
I would love to test out a Z8 but unfortunately I do not have access to one here at the moment
I'd go with the Z8.
also a fantastic option right now
Solid comparison thank you!
Thanks for watching!
why are the pics on the a9iii darker in the photo quality comparison section?
Lighting changes rapidly in the winter here and the a9iii does have less dynamic range so I was trying not to loose highlight detail
I hope you are well friend.

A1 Mark 2 for me. Can't go back to 24mp...not now.
Yeah I’m in the same boat.
Thank you for the time, effort and patience you put into your work. It shows.
Keep'em coming & thx!
Thanks, will do!
Why does the A7RV have 8K but the A9III doesn’t?
The A9III only has a 24mp sensor, to film 8k you need a sensor with at least 33mp
A1 is the canon R5 A9III is the canon R3 sports camera very simple a a9III will not do your landscape pics like your a1 2 different tools for different WORK!!!
agreed, that's why I included a bunch of other shots like birds, action sports, helicopters etc...
Well, Canon R3 is on the level of Sony a9 mark I ;-)
Is Sony A9III still worth it in July 2024?
100% a fantastic camera is you need one with the specs it has. Definitely still one of the best mirrorless cameras on the market
i buy it A93 and 120fps=30fps on UHS-II v60, buy today Type-A 320GB Lexar wait it...
It will work but take more than 2x longer to clear the buffer
@@JakeSloan it's not working for me! only 30fps... test it...
И объясните уже в конце концов для чего этот LAN port и как им пользоваться?
I don’t use it but you can use it to send photos straight to a server or computer in high speed
Can you make Canon R3 vs Sony A9III?
I wish I could get my hands on the R3 to do that!
The correct answer is wait for the a1 markii.

I can't justify a super expensive camera - for now, anyway - but I love your reviews and spectacular scenes, night snow moon shot AB here and others. 🎉For the life of me, I get angry at your views when Philip Bloom gets a ton filming dreary London scapes. I will wait for the precapture on an A1 firmware upgrade... and maybe the new AF modes (insects etc), I hope.
I need the 60Mp of the a1.
I have an a9 and an a1... the a9 3 global shutter is nice the 120fps are definetly nice, but I find the a1's 30fps still enough for my bird photography. I don't havr hummingbirds here and for kingfishers 30 is good :)
That would be amazing to get pre capture on the a1!
Hi dose the A9iii have black out free shutter?
yes it does
8K...gessh! :)
lol RIGHT?
Keeping the A1
yep

8K at 10 bit . . . just what people need.
Not everyone but I use it a lot
I have both and have a need for both
I wish I could justify both! Congrats on that
Я почему-то всегда думал что на A1 global shutter 🤔
No but it does have a very good readout speed
sony actively making cameras that perfectly complement each other so you buy both 💀
example: A7IV/A6700 for photo and video respectively as well as portrait/landscape and wildlife/sports respectively, sony a9iii and a1 for the same stuff
yep!
@@JakeSloan the worst part about a7iv vs a6700 is that the a7iv actually has better autofocus and better sensor readout speed/higher mechanical shutter speed but because the a6700 is new every sponsorer is telling you the opposite

I do because the 8k is so good
I can't understand why the a93 doesn't have 240p in 1080, I will never buy one
yeah I couldn't really figure that out either
Most likely sensor is not optimised for 240Hz cycle. Other elements of camera could most likely handle 1080 240p with ease …

great points and the reality is the A1 is a beast and will be a beast of a camera for years to come
