I can't believe that 4K recording is still subsampled or line skipped and not 8K oversampled like in the Nikon Z8 (8.3K oversampled 4K60p) or in the R5 (4K Fine oversampled from 8K up to 30p). The only oversampled 4K mode in the a1 II is the cropped APS-C mode. A flagship should be able to record full-width 8K oversampled 4K60p or at the very least 30p! Some Nikon Z8 Firmware updates brought more new features than this new Sony a1 ii. I‘m underwhelmed.
Hi Jason, a great balanced video. Like nearly all RUclipsr's who got early access you've not let this cloud your subtle but clear advice. A thought to Sony; I am an A1 owner who suffers from GAS, can afford to upgrade and would normally would but this is my thought process. Trade in my A1 for a new one, likely cost $4.5K, or keep my A1 and buy the Nikon Z8 and potentially migrate to N-Raw, ProRes Raw (10 or 12-bit, 8K 60 fps and great photos with the ability to capture events when not present. Add to that the continuous Firmware updates that keep the camera competitive. Sony, users should not even be thinking as I am after this release but I am. So, my decision is as follows, I will either buy the Z8 or wait for Nikon's next release knowing it will compete but be more cost effective with better video features and clever photo functionality. To Nikon, it's the Z8, not the Z9, its to big so don't cripple the Z8 otherwise my likely migration won't happen.
I’m not ready for a big boy camera but I also don’t want to be one of those people who just buy a camera knowing nothing about it. So I’m here haha. Learning just in case

One thing I do not understand is why Sony does not add an auto level in their Alpha cameras? As a real estate photographer, I would gladly take a bit of a crop to not have to level every single shot on site.
Great cam, but I’ll stick with A7RV. I mainly use my iPhone 16 Pro Max for vlogging, so RV is a perfect companion for me. However, if you’re considering any professional work then the A ii is a no brainer!
Aswsone video! Enjoy your updates. How is the iso noise on the A1 while recording video in s-log3 cine? The original A1 had dual iso at 800 and 4000. Is it just tha same?
Ok so I have a A7iii. I'm thinking about upgrading for better portraits and street photography. Do you think I should wait for the next one or is there a better one out now for that purpose? Im looking for one i can have for about 5 years and still keep up with whatever comes out in that time.

Since the release of Sony FX3 and follow-up by Sony A9 III, I was expecting that the Sony A1 Mark II will get A9's features with FX3's body and will label this camera as GOAT. What shame.
so the a1's will be removed from the shelves, the a1 ii takes its place and the a1 become worth even more when used. will become desirable like the meta quest 3 over the 3s :)

I LOOOVE my original A1. Definitely not worth upgrading. Skipping a generation and will go for mark III whenever that comes out ,2027,2028+ for a bigger leap in technology. If you own neither today and have the money sure I would go for the mark II
A nightmare for most of the A1 users (non paid by Sony). A lot of malfunctions admitted by SONY. Are you ready to send your body more than 3 times to repair because sensor, error systems and more?
Sony is now where Canon was in 2017. Canon is now the one innovating and putting out fully complete cameras. Sony is using the Apple model of innovation and marketing. Sucks to see.
As everyone else is saying, Sony forgot to add the period in the product name. Amateur mistake. Sony Alpha 1 Version 1.1 The a6700, a7R V, and a7 IV all have features and got updates for basic stuff that their flagship a1 owners are willfully neglected on. Sony knew this was going to be a bare minimum iterative update and have the balls to call it a Mk. II
The only boundaries they’re pushing is the small tweaks and high price-yeah, I feel like Sony is peeing on my leg and telling me it’s raining-I’m feeling trolled by Sony and it’s a No Thanks from me…😂.
@@puckhead1221 I had the og a1, and my advice is sell it and move to other brands. For that kind of money you should expect better after-sales services. Or be cheaper if that's how little Sony offers.
While the upgrade may not be substantial, the Sony a1 and a1 II remain the most powerful contenders in the realm of 135 full-frame mirrorless cameras when it comes to high resolution and high-speed photography. Capable of capturing two sets of 30 50-megapixel raw images per second, along with dual high-speed card support for rapid bursts, these cameras place immense demands on autofocus systems, image processors, and CMOS performance, making them unrivaled in the market. In comparison, the equally high-resolution Canon R5 II may boast the ability to shoot 30 Raw frames per second on paper, but it features only one fast card slot and one slower slot, lagging behind the processing speed of the previous generation a1. With the upgrade to 4.0 fast cards in the a1 II, its speed surpasses even that of Canon. Of course, this becomes an exception if your work doesn't necessitate dual card backups. As for the Nikon Z9, capable of shooting only 20 Raw frames, there currently isn't a competitor in the market that can match the high-speed, high-resolution photography capabilities of the original a1, let alone its improved second generation. Regarding the issue of not internally recording Raw, generally speaking, recording in Raw captures far more data than H.265 Log, yet different models will inevitably experience some degree of dynamic range loss when recording in Raw. For instance, the Z6 III's Raw dynamic range is not even as good as N-Log, with S-Log3 proving to be more stable and mature in comparison. Truth be told, unless shooting for cinema purposes, S-Log3 is more than sufficient for most documentary, wedding, and everyday filming needs. Currently, S-Log3 stands as the best-balanced solution in terms of storage capacity, dynamic range, and color science. In terms of initial impressions on the second generation, as of November 19th, Sony's a1 continues to lead similar products, standing out as the second high-resolution, high-speed, and lightweight 135 full-frame mirrorless camera in the market. While the upgrade in the second generation may be limited, it further solidifies Sony's current resource advantage. Prior to the use of the new generation double-layer CMOS in the a1 III, the a1 II, as a high-tech representative of Sony's camera manufacturing prowess over the past two to three years, has widened the gap with its competitors. However, it must be emphasized that this gap is not insurmountable. To truly outpace competitors and leave Canon and Nikon in the dust, a completely new generation of CMOS and image processors is still needed. Nevertheless, for Sony, already equipped with technologies like double-layer CMOS, curved CMOS, and global shutter CMOS, this might just be a matter of time. The prospect of leaving Canon and Nikon behind in outer space might just be a matter of the next decade.
I feel bad for those people looking for MAJOR upgrades with the A1iii. I'm new to the Sony ecosystem and after doing all my research for a camera, I knew this one would be only a smidge better of an upgrade but with high optimism on my end. Still great, but as Jason said, if you aren't looking for pre-capture...ehh, basically. Sony needs to do a bit more with new products and especially with updates to old ones! It has me slightly worried that I picked the wrong brand to get into; longevity wise..
