This video is spot on. I was set on getting a Q3. Came to my senses and picked up the A7CR with the same exact 24mm f2.8 sony lens. So happy with that decision. The only thing I've been after still is the Leica color science and you just solved that for me. Sony all day.

@@spencertclements Yes - I own this lens and pair it with my A7C quite often. It's a great lens, the only thing that bothers me, is that it's pretty long and does not fit easily into any pocket for everyday use.
That's why I just bought a Samyang 35mm 2.8. Even the Sony 24mm 2.8 is pretty long. The samyang is the shortest and least heavy 🙂... also it didnt cost too much.

I swapped my EOS R6 with RF24-70 2.8 for a Leica Q2. I couldn't be happier as the camera is so much handier and lighter when traveling. I like the video, but for me there are two more pros to the Leica: the depth-of-field scale on the lens, which is missing on the Sony lens, and the simplicity of the body, whereas the Sony is the usual collection of dials and buttons.
Now, personally I think the Q is overpriced for what it is because as you say, other than the Leica colors, it really doesn’t result in images you can’t capture with tons of other cameras.

I used to have a Leica Q2 alongside my A7RIV. I sold both and picked up the A7RV and A7CR instead. I love this set-up. I have the menus, custom and function buttons near identical. For professional work, I use the A7RV with my GM zooms or fast primes. For travel or discrete cityscape and street shooting, I take the A7CR with a couple of my compact Sigma I-series primes. Wait for the next time if it‘s pouring rain. I know a wildlife photographer having even two a1 bodies and took them for outdoor shooting. During a little bit of rain, after 15 minutes, the a1 stopped working - the camera was advertised as flag ship, being rain and dust proof, remember? The camera was still under warranty and Sony Service Austria claimed she dumped the camera into water - what she didn’t do of course - and Sony wanted her to pay € 3500 to fix that a1. The old adage is still true: „Buy a Sony, buy yourself a lot of problems!“ - specially if it comes to support, service and warranty. - The first shooting I had with my Leica SL2-S and APO-Summicron-SL 2.0/75 - the day I picked it up - was an outdoor event and it was double-pouring rain. Guess what: zero issues. That’s a camera.

@@ItsMeHammie Well, looks like you had more luck with your A7C as my fellow photography friend with her a1. FYC, the water entered the body of her a1 by the shutter button. I envy the Sony shooters for the AF, but not for the lousy customer service mentality they have.

Agreed! That was my justification when I was thinking about a Q3 for walkabouts. I ended up getting this exact combination (A7CR + 24mm G lens) but with the added benefit of my whole collection of other Sony lenses. I still love the idea of the Q3, but I personally can't justify it for my own use case. Also, I'd be more willing to get reckless with my Sony camera than I would with the Q3. It'll be like how I treat my dress watches when I get anywhere near a body of water - even though they're technically rated for the splash, I'd hate for a piece of seaweed to gently brush the bracelet, leaving a scratch half the width of a strand of hair that you can only see under microscope lol.

As a Q3 owner of 6 months, and having watched soooo many Q3 videos before investing, this is video great! I shoot Sony A7r4 and A7s3 as well. Just spent 3 weeks on the streets in India with the Q3 as my stills camera. I’m 53 and am a professional, so the Q3 was a treat, and a bit of a “coming of age”. There are many things I missed, auto focus was a the big one. But for the first time I tried to learn manual focus and how to do it properly and that was fun. The Q3 is flawed. But damn it is a lovely camera to use when you get in the groove. Thanks for the great video mate.

I own both the RX1R 24MP and RX1Rmkii 42MP and the Zeiss Sonar T lens and sensor combo produces very detailed images with super micro contrast (helped no doubt by the lack of anti aliasing filter on the RX1R and variable AA filter on the mkii). The Leica's local contrast is something that other manufacturers haven't gone for - instead going for local definition (can't have em both - laws of physics and all of that). For that reason, they will not looks the same but you can get close. With my Leica, I took a picture of a steam engine at a station and have that as my lock screen on my phone and several people have seen it and said 'That looks good ... [pause for a couple of seconds whilst looking at the image more closely] ... No, that actually is good.'
Leica glass is what makes the images. The sensor is only secondary and the body basically holds it all together whilst it stops stray light getting in. Leica designed glass is what you need - some mobile phone company had that for a while and many people where impressed.

I was traveling around Japan, Korea, Germany, Austria, and Hungary just recently with my a7rv and 'way' too many lenses, many of which I hardly used. With many street shots, I tried to use AF in crowded places which was a bit difficult with my large Sony lenses so I started visiting Leica Stores along the way to get a feel for their cameras again, I've wanted a Leica since the 80s. Well, got back to the US and ordered a Q3 (also have my eye on an m), and I can't wait, I also have an x100VI. I'm going back to the basics and will be selling many of my Sony lenses, I'll keep the a7rv with 24-70 GMII/35 GM but everything else will be sold. Hello, Leica fanboy here. I own a Leica Q since 2016, it replaced my other camera gear (I had lots) and it has been my primary camera since. To note: I am colourblind and I also don't care about the technical details, i.e. colors rendered, lowest noise, etc etc. What matters for me is the ease of use and simplicity. i also don't want to worry about which lens to chose. the Q lens is not my favourite choice (35mm would), but I learned to use and it made me more creative. Of course technical feature like IQ matter, it just needs to be really good. The Q has been the best camera I've ever owned.

I sold all my Sony cameras and lenses and bought the Q3, then an M monochrome. I couldn't be happier. Sure, you can make an A7C (or other body) handle somewhat similar to a Q3, and get similar image quality. The pixel count is certainly available on the Sony, and the A7C is one of their most portable cameras. But that isn't the point.
Using a Leica is a different experience than handling a Sony, or most other digital cameras. With most of them, I feel more like a computer operator, forever scrolling through menus and tweaking custom functions. The Leica allows you to look and shoot. Then there's the quality of the glass and the color palette Leica uses. A different experience in just about every way.
It's the little things that count, the details, the experience, and when those are all added up, they justify the extra expense, which will soon be forgotten anyway.

I had this exact same dilemma last year after owning the Q3 for a few months. Is this worth it, could I maybe save a $2k? I rented an A7CR and the 24mm G lens just like you did. I played around with it and felt really familiar since I do all my professional work with Sonys. There's just something I didn't like about it though. The feel, the look, I felt unimpressed. I specifically chose something other than Sony to slow down, enjoy the process and make taking photos not feel like work after taking photos all day for work. What makes the Leica Q stand out are the optics. Period. No other lens compares. If you want to get a Q much cheaper, buy a Q first gen used. Stunning performance still today. Plus, I personally believe that having a 60 MP is more of a disadvantage compared to the original Q. Surely these are my personal views but the result of having used the Q extensively, being utterly satisfied and feeling no urge whatsoever to switch. For people than can’t afford several cameras, then yeah, the Sony is definitely a better choice just by its usability and multiple lens selection. Although given the size, I would anyway go for the much better A7RV, as it is not pocketable anyway.
Regarding the Leica, although the Lightroom profile is neat (kudos!), it won’t replace the micro-contrats that the Summilux got. The sharpness and details is just a tad over any other lenses, especially one that open that big.
And also, well you need Lightroom. Which is a pain. But you also need to transfer the file over your computer, go to the profile for each, then do your « corrections » which would get rid of the colors anyway (since, you don’t get the hardware micro-contrast).
So, I think all those videos comparing the twos are very good, but in effect very much not complete. It’s like the GFX vs Hasselblad.
At the end, I won’t want to get out with a Sony, but I would love to get out with a Leica, because this camera is probably better to use, less complicated, better built (hand built!), etc. I think it’s important to have fun.

Awesome comparison! I agree that the A7CR is pretty much as good and a much better performer than the Q3. I actually bought the the A7CR and loved it although 2 weeks after I bought the A7CR, Sony dropped the price of the A7RV down to $3499 and it was to hard to resist, so I exchanged it. I do miss the compact size on the A7CR though. Your pofile does really help to get close to the Leica color although as you mention it will be almost imposible to get it exactly. The leica leans more towards a majenta and the Sony to a Green/Yellow, You can see that clearly on the photo at 7:04 , the highlights on the background mountains have a more majenta look on the Leica than the Sony and the red brick on the house is much more red then the Sony. I think that in the end no one will really know what you shot the photo on as they are both really close in looks, after all the sensor on the Q3 is a sony sensor.

    Neat comparison.
But, it's all about the power of branding - something I learnt as a junior brand manager, many decades ago. Ha ha, no matter what you do it's still about the intangible, certain something, feel and aura that the "real" thing bestows (whatever the genre of operation and brand in question). All else is somehow just slightly inferior and, to some, it matters. Brands speak to us and help to reinforce our value set and aspirations.
Leica is just one of those absolutely iconic brands. Sony is a great brand too, but different. Sony can't ever really quite match the Leica look and feel (nor can Nikon or Canon). But equally, Leica can't quite match a Sony either. They are in some ways close in other respects just different. Probably you know who you are and which camera/brand you want!
Dare I say that in some respects a Leica might seem less desirable, if it were offered for less cost? Perhaps it wouldn't be so appealing if the same machine/glass combo were offered without the Leica name? Or maybe, if you only ever shot by yourself, never mixed with others, who might realise what 'tool' you choose for your image making? There are likely many pretty mediocre photographers who choose Leica, perhaps in the vain (mistaken) belief that it will somehow make them a better photographer. Image making excellence bears no particular allegiance to any one photo brand insofar as I can ascertain.
For sure there is something about rarity, scarcity, niche, special etc that helps support the inherent, but intangible, brand attributes (like a 'vulgar' gold Hasselblad from way back - who really ever needed one of those). Perhaps shooting a Leica is a form of snobbery, but I also know Leica owners who aren't snobs. One refers to his as the price premium for the 'red dot'. I have always been a sucker for 'brilliant engineering' and stuff that's well designed, elegant and just works. So naturally I admire Leica.
I drive a beautiful German sports car and wear an iconic all mechanical Swiss brand wristwatch. I love photography, travel, art, culture and believe (not lacking confidence) that I'm a good photographer too - so ought to be an ideal target Leica customer. I'm lucky that I can afford to buy a Leica, if I wanted one. But, oddly, I now shoot Sony (formerly of the Nikon parish - but that's another story). I never felt the need to standout, but inevitably I do when packing a range of Sony glass (some utterly brilliant BTW). I don't own a Sony a7CR, but have thought that I probably should get one. But, the better ergo of a Sony a7RV would IMO be a better choice for me and my needs. I'm currently down to 2 bodies (a7IV and FX3) wanted an a1, considered an a9iii (still miss my a9) but may hold out for an a1 revision with a7V rear screen etc (will it ever come - a bit like waiting for a mkii GM 85mm). I'd love to try an a7RC with my 35mm f1.4 (one of my fave lenses - subjects just 'pop').
If you can, I'd commend not wasting effort feeling envious of Leica and or their owners. Don't waste time knocking them either. Value what you have, can afford, and get out, go shoot more, develop your skill and eye to 'see' and make better images. Understanding light and basic composition will always help you more than brandishing or bragging about any given camera brand.

I’m a Sony shooter and love what they’re doing these days but putting a 2.36MP EVF in a high res kit like the CR is just plain silly. Almost insulting. Love this! Genius approach to a silly emotional topic many "Leica club members" have on this topic. Thanks for putting all the time and energy you did into this video. That said, I am not sure why you call it a "build" when all you did was change lenses and a lens hood on the Sony, which you obviously can't do on the Leica. But doing the "Leica look" in Darkroom in a post is kinda cheating since you can emulate any camera's "look." And you can do an infinite number of in-camera looks in the Fuj X100 VI or its entire X-Pro lineup in camera also if that is your jam One of the biggest differences is that the Leica JPEGs are vastly inferior to the Sony's (or even the Fuji X-Pro lineup). I own all these cameras but also have the Leica M2 Monochrom, and nothing can match it for B&W alone. The menu system on the Sony is a complex rabbit hole vs. Leica's purposefully minimalist approach. But if cost is one's basic criteria, your recommendation is fun. But the fact is you can get a used Q2 for way less than the Sony "build" so doing this on a used camera basis would be interesting. (Now find a place to hide because the Leica fanbois will come out of the woodwork and be haters :-) I am agnostic when it comes to camera religion. So... when in doubt on the topic, use an iPhone ProMax Plus and blow the quality of all the others away! haha

I'm a Sony fan, but the A7CXr is still a world away from the Q3. The bug one for me is that there is no fast 28 or (preferably) 35mm lens of comparable size to the 28 f/1.7 on the Q3. The f/2.8 28mm G is just too slow with too much DoF. Also, the top dial on the Sony is still PASM rather than shutter speeds. The Q3, with its top-mounted shutter speed, fast, compact 28mm with aperture rung and streamlined operation is a much nicer experience for the kind of shooting you want to do with a compact like this.

The aperture difference is more than low light performance, it's depth of field and transition from in focus to out of focus behaves far differently. While field of view is slightly wider than som other 28mm the effects of distortion are similar. This 24mm has a different curvature and distortion profile to the Q3 for objects near the edge of frame. Overall I prefer the image rendering of the Q3. Try some portrait comparisons and get a bit closer.

Good video - but a silly premise. There are lots of camera and lens combinations that could do much the same job as a Q3. But they’re not a Q3. I have one, and also an R5. And to compare the 24mm 2.8 Sony with a 28mm 1.7 Leica makes no sense. Nothing wrong with an f2.8 lens - but it’s not an f 1.7 is it. Being stuck with one (superb) lens, simple menu system, built in frame lines to visually crop to 35mm and 50mm, a true macro lens, a pleasure to use. I had my Q2 for four years - used it for hundreds of shoots including maybe 50 weddings (alongside a Canon with an 85mm lens). you don’t just buy a Q for image quality. It’s just a lovely tool to use.

Unpopular opinion here. I took a Q3 to a wedding in Cabo a few weeks ago and shot it along side the GFX100S. Honestly, the quality absolutely blew me away. The files are robust, rich, and wildly flexible. The lens clarity is tack sharp but still has a lot of character BUT - the shooting of the thing was not what I had hoped. Having been a Fujifilm photographer for years I expected something like the X100 style camera. Something tiny that could still be really easily shot manually and what I got instead of a camera that felt like was designed for looks over use. Again, the quality of the file - unbelievable. But everything from where the thumbwheel is to even changing white balance, shooting modes, and the AF felt cumbersome and slow. Then I had a chat with Jason Vinson who's a good buddy who is absolutely blowing up this Sony camera for being incredible. Sitting here staring at a desk covered in Fujifilm equipment wondering if there's some kind of magic inside this little Sony I'm missing. This video made me absolutely believe there may be. Thanks for the honest review, and thanks for putting out real content with a clearly professional perspective.

Maybe I missed it, but I think the biggest differentiator in favor of the Q3 is its screens (plus the superb rendering of the Leica lens versus the very competent but clinical rendering of the Sony). The viewfinder in the Sony is so small that it borders unusable for things like critical manual focusing, and the Q3's back screen is much more pleasing (I prefer the tilt screen but can see how that option is subjective). Truthfully, if the Sony had a comparable viewfinder (and ideally, a joystick), I think it'd be a no-brainer. As things stand, have to wonder if the $2k or so premium is really not that crazy if you actually enjoy using the viewfinder and not instead vexed by it on the regular.

Brilliant! I prefer the Sony A7CR, all day. It is so much more flexible. I can use it as a walk-about-town camera or I can swap lenses with my A1 or A7RV and use it as a serious workhorse. Honestly, I’ve been thinking about just getting that lens and slapping it on one of my existing bodies and calling it a day. I do wish, however, that Sony made a compact 35mm. I think the 24 is a bit wide, and the 40 is a bit long.

nice vid! I paired my a7cr with the silver smallrig baseplate and sigma 24mm 3.5 to complete the vintage vibe. lovely images!

I personally tried exactly same option what you have in this video and Sold Sony A7CR & 24mm G as I was not getting skin tone I was looking for. I lost so many hours and finally hated Sony A7Cr so much that I had to take this decision! Handsdown Leica Q3 is the best and trust me, you will save ton of precious time trying to make other cameras look and deliver like Leica......

the f1.7 is irreplaceable tho. 28mm f1.7 wide open is dream like.

First I will say that Leica should make a "QM" camera with Leica mount, no optical viewfinder, but the very best EVF ! My "Leica" Camera are the Sony A7RIV with Zeiss, Voigtländer and Sony GM Lenses. I like the design of the Sony A7RC with the EVF in the corner, but the EVF is too small with too low resolution, it also miss a joystick, so maybe Sony will make the next model more perfect.

Evf and joystick are my two biggest issues with the A7CR as well

Batis 25mm F2 could be the sleeper option here, lens is sooo gooood.

That lens is indeed very good. I just dislike that it doesn’t have an aperture ring, focus hold, or mf switch. But optically it’s fantastic

Yeah duh didn't even cross my mind on any of those, probably because I don't use them but for sure some people like yourself obviously do 😂👍

Pretty cool, but there's no comparison between the f1.7 on the Q3 and the f2.8 on the Sony. When you're shooting that wide, you really need a faster lens to get any sort of bokeh/separation.

Great thing about the A7CR is you Can easily swap this out with a voigtlander or 24GM instead

    • @ab185
      @ab185 2 месяца назад +1

@@kylemeshna the 24GM is like 2/3 of the weight of the Q3 by itself and significantly larger than the Q3's lens, so you end up with a ~30% heavier setup that takes up much more space. I own a Q3, A7SIII, and A1 (along with 35mm f1.4 GM, 24mm f1.4 GM, 55mm Zeiss f1.8) and the Q3's overall package is hard to beat.

@@ab185 I've got a very similar setup (swap the a7siii with the fx3). You obviously understand the appeal of the Q3, so I don't think this video is really for you. This is more for the folks who complain about the Q3 being too expensive when I make a video talking about how much I like it haha.
