    It'll be what I upgrade to years from now. I crop so much due to primarily using primes, I'll definitely benefit quite a bit from the larger MP count. For the mean time I'm really happy with the A7C.

    I'm right on the verge of placing an order. For me it's just a very pragmatic decision. I currently shoot an A7RV and an A6700, depending on what I'm doing. A6700 for travel and casual, and A7RV for more serious. I can sell both those cameras and just stick with A7CR for either case. So many file sizes to choose from. BTW, I rented the camera, and I love that grip. I normally have a SmallRig grip on all my cameras, (big hands), but this one just feels so much better to me.

      Coming at this from the opposite field. Own FX3 for videography (and endorse it heavily). If I want a purely stills camera something like the CR would be on my short list. The GMii trio outperform the megapixels on the FX by a lot. Would love to see them resolve 61.

    Great point about APSc mode. For street photography, having 2 focal ranges available at all times with a prime is a perfect expansion while not being a full zoom lens/range

    One thing to note (that I regretfully just figured out) is that you cannot use the ne Denoise feature in LR when shooting FF but storing them as 26MP M RAW. I tend to shoot higher ISO with fast shutter speeds and everything I shot in that format is unable to use that Denoise feature. 😔

  • @nicholassmith7723
    @nicholassmith7723 11 месяцев назад +1

    I think the question is how are you delivering your images? The crop mode from 33mp I'd still plenty of resolution for social media or prints. Most billboards were shot with less than 24mp not that long ago. The larger your prints, the larger the viewing distance. So I don't see the added resolution as a benefit, but the added dynamic range definitely is a benefit for anyone.

    I've been shooting the A7RV for over 6 months. I actually went through the same thought process choosing between the A7IV. In the end, I'm happy I went with the A7RV though I don't need the extra MP (TBH, I think 45-50 is the sweet spot) it's nice to have (I used to use a A7RIII). BTW, I feel the 26MP files (I shoot most of the time - medium compressed) maybe a bit sharper due to pixel binning.

E.g. shooting at iso 320 at 1/320 shutter speed and f4 still looks slightly noisy and muddy. Wld a 61mp a7cr with the same settings yield a cleaner/sharper image at low Isos (because I know at high Isos the 61mp wld be noiser for sure)? Grateful for your advice as I can't seem to find a straightforward answer! (:

It seems like I would be able to have a full frame and effectively a crop sensor camera in one. I bought the A7CR even though I own an A7RV but used to also own the A7IV and A7C and I’m wondering if the lower resolution sensor on the CII has better performance in low light and indoors. Really love the concept of this camera and even sold my x100v to pursue the A7cr. As a canon shooter heavily invested in canon glass I keep asking myself if this is now the right choice, as running 2 systems is not ideal. Even contemplating changing to Sony. Shame t-hey didn’t put the a7r5 screen on and just beef up the resolution of the evf/lcd. As a portable interchangeable FF travel/street setup it’s hard to beat. Taking into account the flexibility of the crop, having a 24 and 40 gives great scope in a small package. Just wish canon did something similar, but can’t see that happening any time soon. Been using EOs r5 with the pancake 28mm and although great it’s still to bulking and not very incognito. A great video and nice to see your thoughts on this setup. Will I wont I that is the question now 🫣🙂🤔

  • @MrPedalpaddle

    With 33 mp cropped to APS-C you get 14 mp. Less than 26, sure, but it ain’t nothin’. For many uses, like social media posts, 14 mp shots from the a7C2 will be fine, especially if lossless RAW is used. I’m also downsizing from 42 mp a7r3 to A7c2 but experimenting with my APS-C lenses, I think I’ll be fine. (Just looking back at camera reviews from 2010 when 14 mp was regarded as unnecessarily large!)

      How are your finding the crop mode on 14mp?

  • @paullafleur6112
    @paullafleur6112 Год назад +1

    I was wondering, when you shoot a cropped image on the A7CR, do you apply the crop in-camera before the shot? That is, do you set the camera to APSC crop-mode and then take the shot? Will the crop then be applied to the RAW file without an option to return to the FF image? I ask because I believe that the Leica Q cameras retain the FF RAW files without crop even when you took the image as a crop - so that in case you change you mind later, you can return to the FF image in post-processing. Is the A7CR crop reversible too?

    • @Martin-nu6ym

      The image will be stored as a cropped image. I program a button on the camera to allow me to switch between APSC/Full frame mode. That allows me to check the image in crop mode and switch back for the image if I still want the full frame aspect.

    I had to come back to this video to say, that you helped me realize that the CR is a better match for me than the CII. With my OG α7C, I shot about 60/40 pics/vids in the beginning, which led me to upgrade to the CII last year. Now I do about 80/20 p/v, and after reevaluating my shooting style, I'll be buying the α7CR. I've always been a "resolution snob" and just should've gotten it in the first place, but hey, we all make mistakes. Lol

    I've had one for just a couple of weeks. Good to hear a bit about how the Lossless Compression works, I need to experiment with that. Does it also help with noise? I was pretty surprised at how much noise I was getting even outdoors on an overcast day. Going from a much smaller MP video centric camera, that's something I need to improve.
    I went with the CR because in certain street shooting situations I tend to do some heavy cropping.

I’ll probably go with A7CR since I love compact cameras for travel and street photography plus 90% of the time I shoot photos and rarely videos. Just curious if you have any regrets on purchasing A7CR and not A7R5. You got a new sub keep up the great work 👊

    Another great episode. However I am a little confused. If you want to use your full frame prime in crop mode then probably 1,4 or 1,8 would make more sense than 2,8. This would justify spending so much more on A7R. If you keep using 2,8 then you might as well save on A7C II with 33 MP and use your sigma 28-70 2,8 all the way. Perhaps this 24 2,8 or any other 2,8 prime is something special, is it ?

    The logic that A7R’s increased mp means I can use a 35mm and basically skip needing to buy a 50mm prime as well as long as I’m happy with final image quality being comparative to the A7Cii is some pretty incredible logic. Seriously pretty sold after that, as someone who is getting back into photography after 5 years away, wants a beast of a camera, and has no lenses yet!

    Hi, thanks for the video! I'm also an A7cR user, I trade my a7c and order a7cr on the first day it release! I like the chop ability but hate the dynamic range so nallow. I'm not sure how you know the M size compressed raw hive higher dynamic range (source? thou I wish it's true). I think this camera is what I want, but the problem is the price not worth it. (no CFA, no light sensor from a7RV, etc, I wish they have at this price range). One another question I'm not sure about it is the apsc mode, I don't know the difference compare if I chop by myself. (I never use it on previous one since it's resolution)

  • @angelsjoker8190
    @angelsjoker8190 5 месяцев назад

    What does the RAW compression actually do¿ Does it just reduce resolution¿ So that instead of full 61MP you just get 20-30MP but apart from that, the quality stays the same. So you basically get a a7Cii and APS-C both at 20something MP plus the option to go 61MP FF if you need the resolution¿

  • @rlclark50
    @rlclark50 10 месяцев назад

    Hey @DylanBlackburn
    Love the channel, been following for a long time.
    There is one "hidden" feature on the a7Rv that is quite useful and I went an tested on the a7CR in the camera store and confirmed it works.
    If you shoot in Lossless Raw Medium (26mP oversampled from the full image frame, full angle of view) and then go into super-35 crop mode, it does not still use this medium oversampling mode. The camera automatically, without needing to go into the menus and select image quality, goes back to full resolution and then crops, giving you 26MP as well, but with the narrower angle of view. This is really handy as you can keep your file sizes smaller but work between super 35 and full frame with just one button and minimal image degradation.
    See this video (where I first learned about this on the a7Rv) for a better explanation: ruclips.net/video/elocWbGJ6mI/видео.htmlsi=oh6NFmI705ckpRay
