    as a measurement technician and PC nerd that alsom happens to be a photographer and camera nerd, I can only get a smile when I hear that camera heat dissipation testing is getting a team such as Gamers Nexus to help get the proper methodology and good testing practices.
    I am nothing BUT hyped for that !

      A script of some sort is needed. Even cue cards. Otherwise you will sound very unscripted and bounce all over the place, taking too much time in the video. Being a natural talking with an outline to keep you on track is a wonderful gift. Kinda like adlibbing yet staying on track.

    Just a note, the front dial is a massive improvement on the A7C which doesn't have one, and as an A7C owner that's one of the camera's biggest drawbacks for me. Very excited for this!

      @D3LANYO22 9 месяцев назад +2

      made me flow so much better when I set up my back dail to be aperture, with the native iso button and the main dail for shutter made me think all the buttons on the other camera are redundant given I wasn't changing setting too often for portraits and when shooting videos

  • @DominikMBlock
    @DominikMBlock 9 месяцев назад +52

    I really like the new studio setup with the notes and the new table! + the 3rd detail camera shot.
    Although I don't like the camera 2 setup with the "guest chair". It kinda throws me off, because nobody is sitting there so I don't know where to look.
    I get to see more of the room, but the framing is so different to the talking head cam that it feels very "empty". Maybe change the position if you don't have a guest so it matches better.
    Keep it up!

    • @DominikMBlock
      @DominikMBlock 9 месяцев назад +6

      finished the video. Seeing the empty chair made me exspect you got a guest, but you didn't. Maybe I'm the only one, but I would have prefered a table with a fake plant or something else instead.
      (of course if you have a guest you could use the chair)

    • @therealdante
      @therealdante 9 месяцев назад +3

      Yes, absolutely jarring. Overall, I like the new studio space (though I think I prefer the deeper, more complex shot of the old place, but might just take some getting used to), but that angle was so weird and threw me off every time. The composition is just so awkward without a guest here, the TV is just not in the right position for the "Let's pixel peep together" - which is probably why it ended up not being used for it - and I feel my eyes have to dart around, finding what to look at, every time. Nothing but love for Gerald though, I am sure it will be worked out as the new setup evolves.

    Im a Canon R5C user, switched from Sony a few years ago (last Sony I had was A7RII, shot stills and 4K video with it) and it seems like they've improved so many things! I'm considering one of these compact cameras as an everyday carry. Although the specs seem quite similar to the R5C, I'm looking for something with less bulk. Thanks for the review!

  • @themartinhawkins

    I would very much enjoy the very nerdy camera heating tests with Steve and crew. One thing I'd be interested in is how much having a monitor connected to the HDMI ports affects things. At least for me if I'm running cameras for a long time (2+ hours) it's for streaming with HDMI capture cards and that's where cameras tend to overheat for me.

    I would love to see some thermal testing with GN. Living in Arizona, it's really tough to figure out what's going to be able to meet needs. Obviously I don't expect to be able to record outside here with the camera body in direct sunlight very long, but we routinely have ambient temperatures in the shade of 110+ and even at night, it can easily still be over 100 for several hours.

    Gerald, excellent reviews as always. I love the new studio and you are managing it way better than I would (I struggle with one camera!). I just ordered the A74 (arrives tomorrow), (had the A7C but sold it for the A74) thinking I was going use that as my primary hybrid camera and would look at the A7Cii as the backup camera (I like the lightweight for travel!). Now, one of the things I shoot is the Sony 200-600mm lens for wildlife and that small A7C was just too small when using it. Now, on my Tamron 28-75mm (the largest thing I use with it), I was fine. I now have some options to think about! Keep the A74 and get the A7Cii for travel. Or, send back the A74, get the Sony A7RV for my primary (because of educators discount I can get the A7RV for $3300) and then the A7Cii as the travel/B camera. Or, crazy, probably, but get both the A7Cii and the A7Cr?

    Finally. I've been waiting to upgrade from the a7c, the added slomo and breathing comp are going to be great. I also like that they moved the port up, the USB and HDMI were too close together and kinda fiddly. Also hopefully it has the streaming prompt once you plug it in, which I really wanted.

    One’s mileage may vary, but you may want to consider having a static logo on the screen when it’s not being reference. It definitely pulled my focus a few times. Again, YMMV

    Another great review and loving the new studio setup too! I really like the idea of the A7Cii but for me, I own two A7iV (plus a third as a backup) for shooting weddings, I can't see a time where I would really benefit from what it offers. Doesn't stop me wanting one though, it's new and shiny, of course I want one! Or, do I want the A7CR as that's different with its mega sensor.... I don't need either, but I want both!

    Your content is always great man. I have to say I think the new setup (especially the wide TV angle) immediately made it look like you were on a green screen and like the TV side was part of a set extension, and the flat framing of that shot looks very much like a low budget public television talkshow broadcast. Side angle was great. And functionally, it's very cool. Just commenting in the interest of giving test reactions! :)

    Great video Gerald! My one comment is that, as a hybrid Sony shooter, I find it so annoying that they keep releasing cameras that feel slightly incomplete (cropped/binned 4K, rolling shutter, 4.2.2 in some modes, 4.2.0 in others, etc) instead of just completing the camera, even at higher price points (A7RV). I also find it inexcusable that they don’t update firmware on already released cameras. That tells me that they see their customers as a dollar sign, rather than as a community. Hoping someone from Sony reads this ✌🏼

    That front dial/scroll wheel on the grip is not carried over from the A7C, thats new and very welcome. I use the A7C when out and about/ traveling more than my A7Riv, the biggest miss is that front dial on the grip, really pleased to see it on the examples you have in this video.
    10 bit video woohoo!
    I can see the upgrade being a no-brainer from the A7C to the A7C II but not so sure about the A7CR. I use my A7Riv when I need the reliability and reassurance of the two card slots. The A7CR gives that up so I would pass on it.
    ...Nice new set - very Late Late Show ;-) - Nice humble opening too - keep it going mate

  • @evilZardoz
    @evilZardoz 9 месяцев назад

    Love the style and format of the video!
    Currently using the A7C alongside my extensive Canon setup with a 35 GM as my "Sony experiment"; Canon sensors have issues with vertical bloom when using mechanical shutters, exposing blue LEDs as purple and some of their lenses produce a bit more flare when I have backlit situations whereas Sony excels in these areas. Seriously considering the A7C II for the IBIS improvements as I don't shoot with the viewfinder and the UVC HDMI support but will have to look into whether the sensor will be a better option vs the A7C for dynamic range and low noise at high ISO (6400-12800). Additional grip option is a great feature if I want to shoot with this more seriously with Canon lenses via a Metabones adapter as they become front heavy.
    Is there any improvement in anti-flicker when shooting under LED lights with PWM dimming with the A7 IV/C II vs. the A7 III/A7C? I am encountering more and more of these situations as time goes on, especially when shooting live music.
    The primary benefit of the A7C form factor is I can take it with me a lot more easily than the Canon (their new GM lenses are also smaller and lighter than the Canon RF L variants) and as such, it's less imposing for my subjects - and the silver colour adds to that deprecation of "seriousness" when doing street photography.
    Now if only there was an 85 1.2 GM....

    I literally just picked up a second a7iv and now I'm out of the country and can't return it to get the a7cii. That being said, the 7iv is amazing and I don't regret having it, but I would have preferred the weight savings and smaller body size of the new release. I also never use redundant shooting so having only one card slot would not be a big deal for me.

    I am wondering if the A7c II has this "product shot" feature ? Thanks Gerald

    I do like that now Sony and Canon have grip extensions, I wish the other camera makers would follow suit. I also think it'd be really neat if they made an battery that was physically longer (i.e. extended height and capacity) to make use of the extra space that otherwise goes to waste under the battery door, if you're likely to just keep the grip on all the time anyway

    Gerald...thanks for your review -- solid as always and the new set looks great. The GM IIs are worth it especially if you're carrying a camera all day with the lens for say weddings or even sporting events. Your body will thank you!

    This makes me excited for the a7 V and maybe we can get an a7s IV in the next twelve months?
    That new 16-35 is exciting. I’ve come to really rely on the aperture ring on the lens. Love that for video.

    How the 4k 60p in crop factor mode on the a7cII compare to 4k 60p on a FX30/a6700 when regarding low light? are they virtually the same or a FF sensor is still better even in crop mode?

    Solid as always Gerald. At this point, a new camera comes out.... I see what Gerald thinks... then I buy or don't buy. A7Cii is gonna be my new A-Cam (and only camera). Stoked for the smaller setup out in the mountains.

    Seems like the viewfinder resolution is the same as the A6700 for both these new cameras? I'd been hoping for improved a7CR viewfinder, at least.

      And the difference in quality with a6700 w/apsc lenses vs a7c2 w/ff lenses for hobby photographers. Honestly a draw of apsc for me has always been the reach at a lower price point (wildlife on vacation) and its smaller (I'm a small person who ends up using my phone bc it's with me) . I also love shooting portraits

    Excellent review! One question: How many megapixels does the a7cr has in the APS-C mode has? And , how many megapixels does the a7cII has in the APS-C mode?

    Great Review Gerald, but not a fan of the second angle as it causes us to have to "re-find" you when you switch angles; essentially because you're in a totally different position in the frame. IMO I rather have you cut between zoom in/outs as that keeps you in the same position in the frame and it's easy to keep track of you and watch you without difficulty.

    Is the dynamic range is dependent on the sensor or the computation processes happening in the camera?

    Impressive review! I’m amazed why other reviewers test recording and heat of video while recording either nothing or a static scene. Doesn’t video compression work based on what changes from frame to frame? if NOTHING changes, how hard could the camera processor be working and what impact does that have on file size and therefore data rate? Could you do a video on that?
