I like the design with the EVF in the corner ! I would have bought a A7CR, if the EVF had much higher resolution and higher magnification, Sony could have made the camera a bit higher or the backside screen a bit lower, about the screen, I do not like it is fully articulating, it also makes the camera thicker. There should have been a joystick and a mechanical first curtain shutter. I will keep mine Sony A7RIV and A7RIVA.
I've seen a lot of reviewers state that the price difference between these 2 is in the 200-400 range. I'm confused -- I thought MSRP was US $3,000 for the R and $2,200 for the CII. In other countries is the R priced significantly lower, or the CII priced significantly higher? Or do the reviewers just have their numbers wrong??
I have an a6700 and an a74 but now I have an A7cr which has practically made those obsolete. The a74 with a telephoto lens is great but no fun due to weight. I don’t care about the view finder, one SD slit or lower frame rate and I do handheld moving wildlife. The A7cr is fine to use with large lenses like gm 70-200, gm 100-400z Early on I’ve gotten really great results.
Appreciate the insight. Currently have an A74 but stuck on whether I want to add an A6700 to my kit or trade it in for the A7CR. Would just use it like an A6700 for the most part anyways.
The A7CR would be tempting to me given its lower price point than the A7RV were it not for the fact that the A7CR doesn’t have a joystick for moving the autofocus point. I really rely on the joystick, so I’ll stick with my A7R3 until it falls apart and then look at one of Sony’s full size cameras for an upgrade.
I also have the A7R3, my first FF digital camera. I absolutely love it. I also have the A7CR along with the a6700. Funny things is I think the a6700 is the best compact camera Sony made. It has an excellent feel, grip, a better EVF if you can believe, the AI chip and IBIS. Also takes excellent photos. I would like to get the A7R5, but that is a BIG camera compared to the A7R3. But the camera that really surprised me is the ZV-E1. Despite its 12mp sensor, it is simply magical. Don't know why but it is.
@@bondgabebond4907I can't forgive Sony for making the a6700 1/4000th only. (the mechanical shutter matters a lot, full electronic shutter breaks everything else and has horrible rolling shutter despite what the users say, they're coping) if it had 1/8000 or at least 1/6400 it would be simply great... but a6700 is just a video camera with a shutter mechanism.
I know this comment is a Year after this video but a lot has changed. So I use the Smallrig Baseplate for both A7CR & A7CII and now I do not have to deal with the Front Dial which I want that is not on the A7C and my pinky is not dangling underneath the camera. I also got a thumb grip which helps in handling the ergonomics of the small devices better. Imagine the Carl Zeiss Sonnar FE 30mm f/2.8 ZA T Lens or Viltrox or Tamron 20mm Lenses or even the Sony G 24mm, 40mm and 50mm or even the Nifty Fifty f/1.8 for small portability for the type of photography that you and I do. I also have the A7RV and love it. Waiting for the A1 II if it is coming. I have been doing a little 6K but hardly any 8k. It would be something if Sony starts another trend and the camera can do video formats HD, 4K, 6K & 8K. Cheers!
Just how much smaller is the A7CR with the Smallrig grip compared to the A7RV? It seems it's only 150 grams lighter and not much smaller in dimensions?
@@rsandilands I will do a video on that. I did one on the size but with the EVF's compared with both cameras. I have showed the grip on the A7CR but never thought of the difference between the grips. If they are the same size in width, angle or height. Cheers!
I think these cameras make sense when paired with small lenses like Sony's recent 24, 40, or 50mm. They don't make much sense with GM lenses because they are unbalanced.
I think there's a lack of small af lenses in fullframe formet, giving a clear edge to apsc counterparts for street and daily photography unfortunately.
Upgrading a7iii because I need 10 bit video for some work, Doing a mix of professional and leisure work. Super on the fence about which would suit me better
Très bonne video, Pierre. Merci. I own an A7RV and was looking at something smaller and lighter to bring with me on travels and street photography. When I found out the prices, I had to reevaluate. I finally decided to pre-order the A7CII. The price is high but not quite as bad as the A7CR.
You get a compact cam to rig it up for filming and still be able to grab it for the next family hangout. a7IV bulky EVF is useless for rigged up filming - cages get complicated and bulky. On a sidenote, midplaced EVFs are the only leftover from DSLR days, and maybe it's time to move them to the left. There is no reason at all to place EVFs in the middle. Results in aweful ergonomics. That said resoluition could be better - on the EVF and screen.
I agree I think if A7CII was out when I bought my A7IV I probably would look at it more, I still use big telephoto lenses though so I might still want the ever so slightly bigger form factor of the A7IV(and I use it with the battery grip too). but a compact full frame will be pretty nice to pack a more limited size travel setup...
I shoot for pleasure,(not professional), and just bought my first full frame camera (the fantastic A7 iv) after 20 yrs in the point and shoot world. I am still in the return window for my A7 iv and was really liking the A7c as it was cheaper and perhaps all I needed…But now I really really really like the A7C ii which is still cheaper than the A7iv and has enhancements. I like the idea of the smaller size, the new touch menus with icons, and the enhanced IBIS of the A7C ii, (7 stops A7C ii vs 5.5 A7 iv for stabilized lenses). Does the IBIS on the A7C ii make a difference in recording video hand held in real world shooting? Separately, I appreciate what you said last at 15:05 (don’t just fall for the marketing, think about what yu are limited on with your current camera, save your money for a better lens, take a course, etc)…Get out and shoot, do something different and try something new.
@@kevinfernandez2269 thanks for the reply, but I’m thinking about trying to get the A7C ii not another A7 iv! Still, Best Buy here in the United States would charge me a 15% restocking fee (~$400) if I were to return the camera like that, so for where I am now I wouldn’t benefit from returning my A7 iv and getting a used one from MPB. Also, the A7 iv was a hefty investment for me, so I got the $175 warranty/insurance from Best buy. If I do a one for one trade on price (A7C ii) or buy something a little more expensive I’d keep the warranty and Best Buy would waive the restocking fee.
Agree completely... some of the other reviewers seem to just be advertisement for the A7cII and A7cR. Once again, the tiny viewfinder is very offensive. Thanks, Pierre, for being brave and NOT recommending these cameras. PS. The prices set are ridiculous... way too expensive.
It seems that there are too many compromises in the overall UI as highlighted in the video. For example, would it have been reasonable to skip the entry level EVF and instead go with a really high quality three inch monitor that could be used even when it is bright outside.
I know it’s been awhile since you published this video but I now own these cameras along with my A1 and full size A7RV.. I use them primarily for travel and like their smaller size. Also the new compact G f/2.8 G zooms have helped control the weight in my carry bag. Sony is trying to make lighter gear. I really support that. Thank you the video and take care.
Much prefer the full size full frame e mounts camera. The gm lenses just got light in weight but not really smaller in size. These a7c body are too small. For me at least.
I would consider buying A7CR when it goes on sale Christmas of 2024 like the current sale on the A7RV my dilemma is should I trade in my A7IV for A7CR when it goes on sale I do love the compact form and weight reduction especially for vacations and street photography
I went through this dilemma myself recently... and I ended up buying the A7Cii. The A7CR has a higher resolution, but there are negative tradeoffs for someone needing a true Hybrid camera (for video and photo). Full disclosure: I already own the A7IV and A7RV, but I required a Hybrid Body in a Compact form-factor that I can quickly switch between photo shooting and integrating into a cinema rig. The A7Cii does (as you've said) have a lower overall quality EVF and integrated touch screen, but when I'm shooting video, I use my own EVF and my own monitor (depending on whether I'm shooting from the hip, or shooting from the shoulder, or shooting on a gimbal). As you also said, the camera doesn't matter nearly as much as your knowledge and skills, followed by the glass you put in front of it. Where the camera body matters more in that "ratio" is when shooting video... and when it comes to low light video performance, I've found that the A7Cii is clearly (and noticeably) better than the A7CR. These Compact bodies are also far better when it comes to incorporating them into the heart of a modular cinema rig system. They're better than the A7IV and the A7RV (which are both, overall, better camera bodies for photography given their superior integrated monitors and EVF units). For my growing love of street photography, I'm currently challenging myself to use the A7Cii as my primary, but I will confess I'm still carrying either the A7IV or the A7RV with me (with a second focal length on it). Why do I need a compact body? Well, I have to climb mountains with my gear... and my gear includes at least 2 separate drones (usually a Mavic 3 Cine and either a Cinewhoop or an FPV) and both weight and size really matter. Carrying an A7IV and A7RV (for A and B units) not only takes up a significant amount more room in my pack, it adds a noticeable amount of weight. If, however, you're going single body, or looking for a secondary (B) camera, or you don't have to sherpa your gear 20-30km in a day on foot... buy a full-sized body. As you said, Pierre, nobody really NEEDS the AI Autofocus (though it can be quite good, I won't deny)... so everyone should prioritise what matters more to them.
Hi. Am also with the same dilemma. Just sold the A7Riii and looking at A7Cii and A7CR. The A7CR is better for photos, but is the A7Cii better for video?
@@magnusasmussen9452 I'll answer both of your questions here. The A7Cii has a wider native ISO range than the A7CR, and for low light with f/2.8 lenses, it's actually possible to exceed the maximum native ISO of the A7CR, but I've never had a situation where I need to exceed the native max ISO of the A7Cii in any low light scenario. For this reason, I can say confidently that the A7Cii outperforms the A7CR in low light shooting (photo AND video) For reference, the native ISO range for the A7Cii is 100-51,200 where the A7CR is 100-32,000 When you go into expanded ISO ranges, the image can quickly become so noisy that no amount of careful (or AI assisted) noise reduction will save you. In terms of video, the A7CR supports full-frame 4K 60fps shooting, while the A7Cii only supports 4K 60fps in APS-C (crop) mode. If you're only shooting in ideal lighting, and shooting 60fps 4K without cropping matters to you, the A7CR would be the better choice there. It's an unfortunate compromise, but since I shoot photos and videos often in low light conditions, the A7Cii is the better overall choice for me.
@@magnusasmussen9452 That's not what I said... I said that the A7Cii performs better for photo and video in low light conditions, but if you're more interested in shooting 4K 60fps, then you will prefer the A7CR
Hey Pierre great video. So to through a curved ball into the ring. 😊 As a purely minimalist travel and street camera and seeing your experience with the Leica Q’s what would you pick up and take with you. A7cr and 24mm or the Leica Q. I have the Canon R5 and RF glass which is awesome but can be to bulky when travelling with work. Hence looking for something more compact, tried the x110v but disappointed with the results. The rf28mm is great on the R5, which is the most minimalist I can get. Love to know your thoughts. Logic says to save money and use the R5 but always nice to have a second body.
Pierre, how do you feel about your RX1RII vs the A7C2 with a compact lens? I have the RX1RII and I love everything except for the bad autofocus + really bad battery. But the size is unbeatable
You make some excellent points. I think these "C" cameras are targeted at customers like me: I'm not a professional photographer, just a hobbyist photographer looking for a camera that is light and flexible enough, for photo & video, to take just about anywhere. The full frame sensor, autofocus capabilities, and other features give me more than what a cell phone camera could. Also, I'm not looking for dual card slots, and the EVF is good enough for the times when I do need it (certainly there are times). I had a 6700 and enjoyed it so-so, but the A7C made photography fun for me, in a whole different way, without feeling limited to ASPC or overburdened by a heavier camera, that starts feeling like carrying a burden if you're not a pro photographer. I haven't loved a camera as much as the A7C since I can remember. The A7C II addresses a number of "wish to haves" compared to the A7C enough to becomes a good birthday present for me this year 😅🎉 It's a camera that makes me want to go out and take pictures and videos in a way that no other camera has for me. And finally, are people missing the genius of Sony for making this camera good enough for use with lenses designed for ASPC, knowing it has a dedicated ASPC mode? It makes me wish I hadn't sold all my ASPC lenses years ago.
Hi Reyjes, I was in the same position. I bought A7C II 3M ago and it makes me go out and shoot! The best combo I found so far was to pair it with sony 40F2.5. The live got a new hit and that's what it is about 🙂. I just find, that the only lens from APSC which I sucessfully use is the sony 24F1.8. Good light!
I don't see these cameras as "replacements" simply because Sony is targeting hobby/travel market not pros. Most pros will _really_ want (or require) dual card slots. Beyond that, these are very compelling cameras.
BONNE VIDÉO PIERRE MERCI!! So I am confused. Why do you say about the A7Cii that you would never use the 7K oversampling ? Isn’t that an advantage? Also how would you turn it off if you didn’t want to use it? ANYBODY CAN ANSWER IF PIERRE DOESN’T !! I am about to buy this camera so I want to understand this…
I can always tell the difference between my photos taken with Sony and Nikon cameras. Many times tried to get the same colors from Sony I'm getting from Nikon, never got the same results. Every camera has it's own signature look. So I'm not sure whether I want to buy A7Cii. The size and weight are attractive, but I'm afraid the colors will be the same as before.
@@donalone nope, it doesn't. The easiest thing to fix is Sony's overly warm white balance. Then DXO has cross camera profiles, so you can apply Nikon profile to Sony raw file. That's as close as you can get. Still often the images are very different, especially when it comes to blue colors. Nikon blues are spectacular.
@@ElementaryWatson-123 Thanks for the reply. I guess I misunderstood what you said. I thought you would consider A7CII to match the color with your current Sony. Yup it will be hard to match other brand cameras.
Honestly, I love the A7cii, of travellling around the photo and video is amazing and the Ai autofocus is no joke. If I was ready to shell out for a A7cr I would just save a little more for the A7rV
Thank you for the video. I have larger full frame cameras like the A7RV and A1. Sold my A7 IV and A7C. Now I still want one smaller camera to take instead or as a backup. Based on what I sold those two cameras for i can basically buy either the A7C II or A7CR but have decided to try the A6700 first which is quite a bit less expensive. By the time these will be delivered I will have shot with the A6700 for two full months and know if I need either for travel or compromise and stay APS-C. I am thinking 33 Mpixels is really enough but the 61 Mpixel and it’s 26 Mpixel APS- C mode provide great flexibility. So I will see with the A6700 what frame rate I really tend to use since I don’t expect to use these for BIF like my A1s.
@@randomvert3723 like the A6700 a lot and have some great lenses for it. The Viltrox 27/1.2 and 75/1.2 don’t make it small but give me great image quality. The third is the small and light 70-350mm zoom. The other lenses are easy to carry and give very fine quality as well. So I do use it and my a7CR as my travel kit.
Pricing is too close to the A74, the only reasons for buying the A7c over an A74 is price and size, the A7cIi is obviously being priced in line with the A7V for when that’s released, which doesn’t bode well for the price of that.
Hi. Not my first research, but need shorter answer. Shooting only for work real estate photos and videos (realtors talking and general). Would someone rather suggest a7c ii or other Sony hybrid, but not 7RV (too expensive). Thank you for your time.
Really enjoyed your viewpoints. I've decided on the A7CR as the difference in image quality both photos and videos are just too obvious for me. And yeah, the AR V is a dream, but a huge, pro one at that ;)
Hey Pierre, I was looking at these 2 camera to ‘upgrade’ from my a7sIII. Love the a7sIII but want a little bit more resolution, and those 2 look great for travelling. You briefly mentioned you also had the a7sIII, was wondering what you thoughts of comparing these 2 to the a7sIII, or if you would still pick a7sIII?
I was hoping a7cii will cost closer to FX30. Now Zve1 seems better than a7cii But for new camera enthusiasts like me S5ii seems better and it costs less that FX30 is my country.
I wish the Panasonic S5II was around when I started getting into photography. There are a lot of features in Canon, Sony, Fujifilm cameras Panasonic cameras already had for years. pre burst, 6k open gate for video, shutter angle, are just a few I can think of off the top of my head. And for the cost of one Sony A7CR, you can buy two S5II or one S5II and a great lens to get started.
@@marcgilles4520 A7cR is a joke because if you are a professional get the A7R5 because it's an investment. And if you are a hobbyist why the hell would you need a 61mp sensor. Get one of the hybrid ones.
@@TooMuch__2 I agree 100%. Who is the target demographic for the A7CR? I was thinking maybe as a backup for a A7R5 user? But at that price they would be better off with the A74. Maybe a vlogger, who also wants higher megapixels? I would still go with an A74, 🤷♂
hey, I have a question for you because I heard that the Sony a7c ii is "more plastic" than the first version a7c, something like the zv e1. Does this only apply to the black version or is the silver version also made of the same material as the black one?
Thank you Pierre for your review on these wonderful cameras. One thing to note is once you start using the Ai tracking, It will drain batteries faster.
Pierre, Great and very honest review of the new A7cs. I have a question. I do have an A7RV and love it. I also just got rid of 2 LeicaM6s but kept the lenses. The leica lenses have been fantastic on my A7Rs and though I have a full battery of Sony e lenses, The manual Leica lenses are pretty good...to the question... do I get an A7C2 or A7Rc vs. a Leica M11? Please let me know your suggestions since I am sitting on funds from the 2 Leica M6s.
To be honest, both are great cameras but I feel like my Sony A7r4 is still doing a wonderful job. The autofocus is still as good as I needed...I think I will wait until A7r6 before consider upgrading :)
A7cii not support type A memory card. But All-i bit rate 600mb... which card best for cii ? I am little bit confused about a7iv or a7cii. Basically I am a wedding photographer. My need both photography and Cinematography.
I don't get Sony. Why they skimp on those LCD/EVFs? My 5d4 which is 2 years older than a7 iii has way better screen, better res, better brightness (usable outdoors).
I keep seeing conflicting specs for the a7RV. Some reviewers are saying it has a crop at 4k60 and others say that it is full frame(like this video and the B&H Photo videos). I don't see any official specs from Sony so which is it?
so not only this camera has only a single curtain, but it is also limited to 1/4000th of a second despite costing just 100 less euro than the A7m4. Pass. It's just a full frame A6700. And the a6700 is not good for high speed photography.
I think an A1 for action and an A7RC would be a really good combination for action and landscape, respectively. I use AI focus often for wildlife and I use focus stacking often for MACRO and landscape on my A7RV. The question for me is whether I’d sell my A7RIV and buy the A7CR as a backup for my A7RV. I doubt it because it is just too redundant.
Hi David May I ask you, since you use AI focus for wildlife, how’s the successful rate to track the fast moving animal object? I am very interested to get Sony’s AI focus for kids play. (Yes they are usually fast moving and unpredictable)
What are your thoughts between the A7IV and A7CII? I currently have an A7IV and need a second camera. I love the compactness of the A7CII for travel and everyday shooting, but I worry about the single card slot and possible overheating when compared to the A7IV. Please let me know your thoughts!
I am in a similar position, but ultimately can’t find a compelling enough reason to do the switch. You are getting a smaller form factor in the A 7C ii but giving up a higher resolution EVF, loosing a more ergonomic hand grip, and getting worse battery life. Also, you’re losing customizable buttons, (4 vs 2), and no autofocus/ zoom in joystick. I thought the size difference would be significant but I think more is made of this than what it actually is, (not a big difference). I actually appreciate the bigger A7 iv because of the better EVF, buttons, & ergonomic handgrip, both things the A7C models make compromises on. The better AI and auto focus seems like it would be an improvement, but the A7 iv is already getting an A+ in this category and I don’t think the A7C II’s improvement would translate into anything more than a marginal upgrade in real world shooting. For me, I’d have to pay a 15% restocking fee to Best Buy to do the trade, and while I’d like to have the latest and greatest I’m not seeing how after doing all that horsing around I would ultimately be happier, but good luck I see exactly why you might switch to the A7C ii.
is it worth selling my a7iii to get the a7cii? i feel like some drawbacks of the a7cii are making me not wanna sell, i would like to hear your guys' opinion
I have an a7III and the only reason the a7C line is appealing to me is because I want a smaller full frame camera for personal and travel use. The tech is improved, but there is nothing wrong with the a7III, and it can be used until it wears out in my opinion. It all depends on what you shoot, what your personal needs are and what you like. I think handling a camera before purchase at a local camera store is the best way to decide if you like it or not. Drawbacks in handling are personal.
@@diblaze77 Oh totally, ergonomics and handling are a huge thing, and for me, the a7III is perfect in terms of button layout and feel in hand, i prefer it over the a7IV but I have yet to try the a7c. The main reason I'm looking to get an a7cii is because it's an improved and smaller a7IV and in terms of performance, it beats the a7III. my main thing is video work and for that a7cii would work great on gimbals and even handheld. But again, the small size has its drawbacks such as missing buttons and joystick which I both use a LOT on my a7iii, plus the fact that it has only 1 sd slot. Other than that it's a perfect camera for me.
I would have gotten the A7cr or A7cii but I feel like Sony lenses are still too big for the camera bodies. I have the Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 on my a7iii and my camera still feels front-heavy. The only lens that works is the 24mm 40mm 50mm f2.8 G Sony's Prime but the focal range is limiting and I was hoping to take a zoom lens for travel. I wished the 16-35mm Sony GM II was going to be under 320g but being 680g; I'll prefer the bigger bodies like the A7RV for hand support.
I like the A7C cameras but I prefer a bigger size difference between bodies to compliment the biggest. I have the A1 as my main and a Canon G5X ii as a small walkabout.
I wanna upgrade from my 6600 and the 2 main reasons are better view finder/screen and a joystick, both of these kinda disappoint ne because they are awesome but not perfect
How do you configure your monitor such that things like burst speed and subject detection can be configured via touch like at 3:54? Is it only on the C models and not on the A7R V?
I have to agree on the topic of EVF being too limiting to pay that much. I have a hard time using the low res screen to make sure that I have AF Locked, I tried the A7RV EVF and is really good, but, is it worth another $900 over the A7CR?.....that I think is the key question that I am struggling with ......
@@Pierretlambert noticed that you don't use the EVF and just focus using the screen , obviouly that seem to work well for you. That skill is perhaps something I would have to develop, I already have the A7IV, and love it, I tried the A7RV, and the sensor , in my option, produces a more pleasant image , in particular for portraits, I have preorder the CR at B&H , looks like it will be available starting on Oct 12th, enough time to make up my final decision once I see more reviews.
Much as I like the form factor of the 7cr, the EVF of the sony a7r5 is so much better. I do a lot of MF work & updated from the r4 to the r5 partially because of the EVF. Further the R5 screen & ibis is also better so the price difference is worth it. Yet I am glad that Sony is developing this form factor & maybe in its next variant improve some aspects without compromising on the light compact form. Incidentally my first sony camera was the a7r & that was 465 grams
Hi Pierre, very informative video it's good that the image quality is great from both cameras, it's an important decision to make when buying a new camera. And Sony always excels in image quality. Both the A7CR and the A7CR11 would be a great camera to buy for someone that doesn't have a Sony camera, and wants to upgrade from an old DSLR to a Sony Mirrorless camera. And a great idea Pierre to have a photo book from White Wall. Great presentation thanks for sharing this video. 😃
Dang im early. Love your content, also for street photography how do you find good scenery, the only city near me is atlanta, which is full of crackheads and the roads are crumbled
Video idea: Lens suggestions for the A7CR and A7Cii, I've looked and did not find many videos on RUclips. As much as I like the GM 24-70 or Sigma 24-70 ART lenses, I don't want to pair them with a A7Cii
Sony will tell you how environmental friendly they are, but they will force you to get a 20 new cameras in 3 years because of software limitations they have designed. What a stupid company ... Very sad to see where is this sony division heading.
I agree, neither A7Cii nor A7CR are good enough to compete in the market rightnow as we have plenty of decent choices like ZV-E1, A7iv, Canon R8 & R6ii and the In coming, Nikon Zf Deal Breaker [my personal reason] A7Cii - 4K60 crop ×1.5 A7CR - no flip&tilt screen as A7R5
The only way to get maximum output out of these overpriced compact cameras is to he GM or out equivalent lenses. And if u get the extended grip u might as well get a Sony A7RV or Sony A7IV🤷🏾♂️ To top it off only 1 slot 🤦🏾♂️
I just watched your RX1ii initial review. They fix everything you said was wrong with the RX1ii (improved grip, battery, auto focus, more megapixels) with interchangeable lenses for $300 less, but somehow you wouldn't recommend these 🤣 Photography channels have become so inconsistent and "trend following" it's insane. If you slap a small 35mm f2 on this, its a next gen, (far superior) RX1 with more options... but because Leica and a few other "trendy" companies have fixed lenses this isn't being compared to those. I'm glad I stopped paying attention to camera channels, the recommendations make zero sense these days because (mostly) everyone in the space is trend-hopping instead of being practical. No disrespect intended, I'm just thinking from the perspective of Sony, and what I'm seeing is camera critics are insatiable and change their expectations almost weekly.

There should have been a joystick and a mechanical first curtain shutter. I will keep mine Sony A7RIV and A7RIVA.
I feel like I got my A7C for a steal! For the amount they are asking I agree... better off with a regular A7 body.
Have an A6700 and thinking about getting an A7CR… can still use my APS-C lenses in crop mode with similar resolution
(the mechanical shutter matters a lot, full electronic shutter breaks everything else and has horrible rolling shutter despite what the users say, they're coping)
if it had 1/8000 or at least 1/6400 it would be simply great... but a6700 is just a video camera with a shutter mechanism.
Cheers!
@@randallbrander8157 As someone stuck between deciding on the A7CR vs A7RV, that would be great.
@@rsandilands Video will be coming shortly.
Which grip did u use ?
I think these cameras make sense when paired with small lenses like Sony's recent 24, 40, or 50mm. They don't make much sense with GM lenses because they are unbalanced.
Exactly
I fully agree. I own a A7RV and would NEVER swap it against its overpriced albeit smaller 60 MP cousin A7CR. The A7CII seems the better bet.
Return the A7Iv and buy it again used. I got mine for 2095 from MPB and it is like brand new!
I really appetite your honesty , Thankyou. My A7IV is still perfect for my photo needs and I love the way the body feels I'm my hands.
@@jamessobredo7847 you're welcome! I struggled a bit with this so happy it resonates!
It seems that there are too many compromises in the overall UI as highlighted in the video. For example, would it have been reasonable to skip the entry level EVF and instead go with a really high quality three inch monitor that could be used even when it is bright outside.
Agreed 100%. Although the price would reflect it. I find it's high enough as it is.
I would consider buying A7CR when it goes on sale Christmas of 2024 like the current sale on the A7RV my dilemma is should I trade in my A7IV for A7CR when it goes on sale I do love the compact form and weight reduction especially for vacations and street photography
thank you for calling out Sony for their lack of firmware updates
And how is the A7Cii clearly better at low light? And does that go for photos too?
@@magnusasmussen9452 I'll answer both of your questions here.
The A7Cii has a wider native ISO range than the A7CR, and for low light with f/2.8 lenses, it's actually possible to exceed the maximum native ISO of the A7CR, but I've never had a situation where I need to exceed the native max ISO of the A7Cii in any low light scenario.
For this reason, I can say confidently that the A7Cii outperforms the A7CR in low light shooting (photo AND video)
For reference, the native ISO range for the A7Cii is 100-51,200 where the A7CR is 100-32,000
When you go into expanded ISO ranges, the image can quickly become so noisy that no amount of careful (or AI assisted) noise reduction will save you.
@@LaKravenStudios Thanks a lot. So the A7Cii is better in video even with aps-c crop than A7CR in FF mode (both 60 fps).
Thanks again :)) :))
Hey man, since you have used the A7CII and you own the RX1RII, how do you feel about either?
The same image process engine should produce the same result?
Already have an A7C, and I don't have any reason to upgrade. The thing I need to upgrade is my skills, and A7C is 1000% enough atm :D
What's your point? Does this comment help anyone out, other than making yourself feel better about not upgrading?
How has the a6700 doing for u ?
@@randomvert3723 like the A6700 a lot and have some great lenses for it. The Viltrox 27/1.2 and 75/1.2 don’t make it small but give me great image quality. The third is the small and light 70-350mm zoom. The other lenses are easy to carry and give very fine quality as well. So I do use it and my a7CR as my travel kit.
A quite refreshing review for a change! Kill the hype push the process!
The A7CR does 4k60 with a 1.2 crop. Not as bad as the 1.5 crop on the A7CII but not full frame 4k60
Pricing is too close to the A74, the only reasons for buying the A7c over an A74 is price and size, the A7cIi is obviously being priced in line with the A7V for when that’s released, which doesn’t bode well for the price of that.
Actually just this Summer Sony ran a promotion, A7iv was $2099 and A7C was $1399. I'm sure Sony will do it again.
Hi. Not my first research, but need shorter answer. Shooting only for work real estate photos and videos (realtors talking and general). Would someone rather suggest a7c ii or other Sony hybrid, but not 7RV (too expensive). Thank you for your time.
A7Cii is mostly for the advanced amateur market IMO, someone who prefers portability over professional features like dual card slots.
Now Zve1 seems better than a7cii
But for new camera enthusiasts like me S5ii seems better and it costs less that FX30 is my country.

The ZVE1 is essentially an A7Cs (A7C body with A7siii internal lol)
EVF magnification is the key. It’s the same as a6700 now.
hey, I have a question for you because I heard that the Sony a7c ii is "more plastic" than the first version a7c, something like the zv e1. Does this only apply to the black version or is the silver version also made of the same material as the black one?
Great honest review and fantastic photos.
Merci en avance.
Hey! Good question! Get a Leica adapter and put them on the A7RV. The A7CR will just give you all smaller body that's it :)
They are not trying to replace, more like the B version of their counterparts.
To be honest, both are great cameras but I feel like my Sony A7r4 is still doing a wonderful job.
The autofocus is still as good as I needed...I think I will wait until A7r6 before consider upgrading :)
My nearest photo shop manager once told me to jump a new generation when I want to upgrade. Not a bad advice. I'd do the same as you.
A7Cii better autofocus

I don't get Sony. Why they skimp on those LCD/EVFs? My 5d4 which is 2 years older than a7 iii has way better screen, better res, better brightness (usable outdoors).
I appreciate your honesty. Great job!
Hi im from indo..
the a7c ii sensor can't be closed like a7iv? and is there a weather seal like a7iv?
and the memory can use cf express? 🙏
Yeah, thats a good question…Can one close the shutter on the A7C ii?
thanks for your honesty at the end of the video, respect!
That’s what I wanted to do with my A1, but I can’t because the a7CR has that stupid flappy screen and not a tilt screen like “R” bodies should have 😡
Hi David May I ask you, since you use AI focus for wildlife, how’s the successful rate to track the fast moving animal object? I am very interested to get Sony’s AI focus for kids play. (Yes they are usually fast moving and unpredictable)
What are your thoughts between the A7IV and A7CII? I currently have an A7IV and need a second camera. I love the compactness of the A7CII for travel and everyday shooting, but I worry about the single card slot and possible overheating when compared to the A7IV. Please let me know your thoughts!
4k60 1.5x Crop is a Big nono for me
Yeah they did… :/
Love your new studio!! Looks baller!
Thank you amigo
I just bought the Sony a7iv a week ago as my first camera ever. Should I send it back and get sony a7cii or keep it?
7:37 hi, another great video as always! Sorry, what did you shoot that beautiful landscape on? Thanks!
On a drone Mavic 2 Pro :)
This kind of EVF was acceptable in the NEX-6, ten years ago.
I think Cannon R8 would be a great choice
is it worth selling my a7iii to get the a7cii? i feel like some drawbacks of the a7cii are making me not wanna sell, i would like to hear your guys' opinion
I love seeing your photos and watching your videos
So the R sensor out resolves its EVF & LCD… 😂 .. I have the A7Cii and it’s fun. Tempted by R.. nervous about noise below 6400.
I appreciate your videos, especially for your honesty.
So disappointed. Pay panasonic for ibis patent licensing already. Digital stabilization is 2003 technology sony still uses

Your choice will come to size and need for "pro" usage.
The single memory cards slot is a dealbreaker for me.
Is this the same AF as the A7RV where you can save a face & it’s the highest grade AF I’ve ever seen in my life?
Thanks Pierre !
Merci pour tes vidéos Pierre : comme pour toi en tant que professionnel, je ne peux prendre le risque de n avoir qu’une seule sd-card…
what about the sony a7cr or sony a7riv
im using a7iii, and im annoyed by 30mins video limit, i want upgrade to a7cii, is this good?
that could be a worthwile upgrade yes if you don't use the two sd card slot :)
Appreciate your honesty!
welcome to another episode of "shit I can't buy", today featuring "I'm too poor". next episode we will be reviewing "selling kidneys"
the firmware shade is real 😂
Sony will tell you how environmental friendly they are, but they will force you to get a 20 new cameras in 3 years because of software limitations they have designed. What a stupid company ... Very sad to see where is this sony division heading.
No it’s not, it’s petty. The firmware is getting addressed when the a9iii debuts
They want to protect their cine cams. I’m holding out for Nikon still but it’s taking a while… at least Sony releases the damn camera
next video title: i was wrong! about the a7c2
lol next video: 2 hours of street photography with the A7CR and new 16-35mm :D
I agree, neither A7Cii nor A7CR are good enough to compete in the market rightnow as we have plenty of decent choices like ZV-E1, A7iv, Canon R8 & R6ii
and the In coming, Nikon Zf
Deal Breaker [my personal reason]
A7Cii - 4K60 crop ×1.5
A7CR - no flip&tilt screen as A7R5
This comment didn’t age well. 😅
No kidding not worth the price difference between the a7c. $1500 used like new off KEH or MPB.
SUPER. SOON I WILL MAKE MY REVIEW😏
love your videos
9:57 Polish power 💪
If what you get does not improve overtime… (firmware updates) nor interested. They don’t care about customers.
The only way to get maximum output out of these overpriced compact cameras is to he GM or out equivalent lenses. And if u get the extended grip u might as well get a Sony A7RV or Sony A7IV🤷🏾♂️ To top it off only 1 slot 🤦🏾♂️
Nice Camera but knowing Sony. They wouldn't provide any firmware like the A1.
Wouldn't get either one either, and the EVS is total garbage! I'll stick with the A7RV thanks.
Theyll be perfect when they get dual card dlots.
The name convention at Sony is as confusing as their menu
