My story telling problem seems okay for me but whenever I watch your videos. I’m like man there’s so many wrongs with my edit lol. Kidding aside thank you again Brandon for your help!
Workflow. Especially travel videos. When should I edit? Most of the time, I have all these cool shots and scenes, and what I envisioned at the time may have been forgotten by the time I get to the editing. Which means, I have a whole heap of useless footage. Surely there must be a more fluid way than literally using a pen and paper to write the script as I go along......
Exactly what you've tackled today. Coming from photography, i have some amazing 'shots' but i havent yet edited or posted anything as they dont tell a story, been suffering from this issue for a while, nice to see some tackle it so comprehensively
Yes, this is real content for filmmakers, thank you!!! This kind of tutorials are so much more important than seeing gear reviews or RUclips studio builds. I look forward to seeing more content like this!
Some time you don't need to tell a story, other it will tell by itself like the one you did last week about your trip to this hotel. However most of the time just enjoy the travel videos for whatever it is. See the fpv videos, it's just amazing views with cool music and great editing. Regardless good to see you busy making new videos while you are in your quarantine.
RUclips would be an even greater platform if more creators would focus on stuff like this instead of gear tests and comparisons. Thanks a million for this video! Going on a one week off-road motorcycle trip tomorrow and want to shoot my first video in 4 years to reactivate my channel. Will try to implement as much as I can from what you said.
these tutorial videos are gold, Brandon! too many gears video on RUclips it's turning into a marketing platform. Thanks for still being here giving us proper lessons.
I don't know how this video got past me but I just saw it. I've been following your work for years and have purchased your gimbal masterclass but this is the video I have gotten the most from. Thank you! I can't wait for things to go back to normal so I can see your art as it is meant to be. It breaks my heart to see your work be paused while you are at the top of your game. Love and respect. Thank you for being you.
Thanks - love the shot vs scene idea. I'm really struggling to even know where to start when picking up the camera, with so much focus on gimbal moves, cinematic blah blah blah, when it's really about how to start telling a story. This idea really helps, and the reactions shots idea is also priceless.
I decided to dedicate our first long lockdown to workshops, so I took many. The Unscripted Film School was way long the best educational content I ever attend. It modified totally my vision about filmmaking and the Storytelling Area was a real jewel. Brandon is great filmmaker, but if possible even a greater teacher! Go for it , you will never regret.
GETTING STARTED and a work flow....I began learning film making during shutdown..watching tons of videos.. THIS VIDEO is unbelievable... with out a doubt just what I have been looking for.. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
When I first started watching this, I was thinking "yeah, derr" this is standard and obvious but then I kept watching and it's such a great, simple and effective framework. I ended up watching it a couple of times to really sink it in! Thank you.
Yep i made this mistake for a long time. Most people don't care about cool shots, it needs to give information, tell a story or draw a reaction, or all three. Top info.
really useful lesson on what I would term as the essentials of a video narrative and not just the cliche theory but the essence of it. Thank you Brandon!
ive never really heard this topic discussed a lot (shot vs scene) and it's now on the top list of things i need to be mindful of while shooting. thank you so much for this video!!
Best video I’ve seen out of literally hundreds! I plan on watching daily to properly internalize. This video made it extremely simple for those of us who don’t even know where to start with filmmaking. Thanks, bro.
This is so helpful for me. Thanks so much Brandon. My biggest challenge is to really shape how and what direction my Channel is going to be. Especially I have not decided my niche/topic, so every content is little different and I also wanna do more cinematography and better filming as well instead of just doing sit down studio talk recently. Appreciate it!!
This has to be one of the clearest lessons I've watched that really made the concept easier to understand while keeping it interesting and concise. Definitely applying this to my next shoot (whenever that is haha) as I've definitely felt that a lot is missing from the videos I make. Thanks so much Brandon!!
BRO THIS IS PERFECT! I always found myself just shooting random "shots" and having a hard time editing. Now I know how to build a scene from a shot. 👍👍
appreciate the honestly with pure travel videos. they're cool and all for some commercial work but do get repetitive with lack of invested story. nice break down
You absolutely hit the nail on the head for me with your shot vs scene description. I am a photographer that over the last several years has moved more and more to video. My work is probably 80% video now. I think this description has been my biggest obstacle when I get back to edit and feel I am missing something. This is awesome. Thank you Brandon.
Very helpful video Brandon! It is true that many of us, coming from photography, often focus on very beautiful images which, however, are not enough on their own to tell a story when making films
Oh man, this is pure value! I've been doing photography for the past 1,5 years and dabbled into videography like 6 months ago. I still struggle with storytelling sometimes, so this was such a useful video man, thanks for this!
Hi Brandon...i have watched many many story tellimg videos to study how to do it. But you have given the most acceptable and real technique, with that Scene & Shot. Thank you so much...
This is awesome! I’m constantly trying to improve my videos so I’ll search for things I want to do better. So glad I found this video… these tips and knowledge will make my trail guides so much better! I’ll be rewatching again with my notepad.
Really enjoyed all these techniques! Please please please could you do more of these practical filming tutorials! Your filming techniques are priceless and I hope to learn them all!!
I want to start making videos but I struggle with the story side. But this makes the hurdle very low to start. Why didn't nobody tell me this 80 years ago? This makes it so doable/ approachable to start. Thank you Brandon 👍🏽
Great video mate! The ‘shot’ ‘scene’ section really helped. You didn’t say anything in particular that I hadn’t already thought about, but something about your presentation and how you said it really clicked! Thank you and keep inspiring!
This is one of the best pieces of advice I have seen on this matter! You are brilliant mate and described perfectly what I have been searching for for weeks now. Thank you so much! 🙏
Oh boy…I needed this video. Heading to Poland and then Ukraine for the second time in 2 months. My first trip, I got back and was underwhelmed by my footage. These tips are 🔥. Subbed and liked. And gonna look into your courses. Bravo mate.
I skipped a beat seeing a new post from you and for something that I was looking for! I follow your work passionately and hope someday that I have enough money to sign up for your course. 🙏
This is the video I needed today. Recently I've been literally thinking about storytelling in film and narrative video-making in general. Serendipitous!
So, so helpful Brandon. You’ve really got me thinking and I am going to try put this into action. You got me smiling when you said this is “better than trying to edit together random shots” - which has been the bain of my video making existence!!!
BOOM!!!! Fantastic Brandon, thank you. You’re absolutely right, the gear reviews are handy and I’m sure they help keep paying bills in lockdown but this is your gold dust content. Cheers mate!
Bravo Brandon, this is the content your subs want to see. Not only is it more entertaining but it also shows your skills as a filmmaker. Please make more of these informative videos. They will benefit the promotion of your course also :) Great stuff keep it up
Awesome video! I'm really wanting to work on this. I have a 1-2 minute collection of shots when I was up in a snowstorm in the mountains, both on the ground and with a drone, but the scene/story is about a 2/10. If I had only watched the first 2 minutes of this video beforehand, it would've been so much more cohesive and meaningful.
Thank you so much for sharing. Your advice will make me a great creator in the future. I make a recap note from this video and be the guidance from now on.
What is your biggest storytelling problem?
My story telling problem seems okay for me but whenever I watch your videos. I’m like man there’s so many wrongs with my edit lol. Kidding aside thank you again Brandon for your help!

My storytelling problem is i want an authentic performance or reactions from non-actors. how am I supposed to master that?
Still not be able to portray real emotions that people should remember like stories. and that's seems like a big problem.
Exactly what you've tackled today. Coming from photography, i have some amazing 'shots' but i havent yet edited or posted anything as they dont tell a story, been suffering from this issue for a while, nice to see some tackle it so comprehensively
2 minutes in and I already love it. I don't know why I never thought about the difference between shot and scene before myself.
Yes, this is real content for filmmakers, thank you!!!
This kind of tutorials are so much more important than seeing gear reviews or RUclips studio builds.
I look forward to seeing more content like this!
The shot vs scene concept is so simple yet so powerful!
This video was an eye opener for me. Finally a understandable of what a scene is versus a shot. As a photographer I can finally relate. Thanks
One of the best editing tutorials I’ve seen on RUclips.
we lot of learn from your videos bro .. thanks.... love from india....❤❤❤

THIS IS THE BEST LESSON ON FILM MAKING AVAILABLE ON RUclips :)

Hi Brandon, i just wanted to say thank you for giving so many tips for free. This is not usual and i appreciate it highly
Also by just doing videos over and over again, at one point you get the idea of naturally getting a story together. Really cool video! :)
i’ve been looking for a video exactly like this for ages!! you crushed it bro, so many good tips and points
Your Andalusia film is full of what you explained. The Passion that comes across is wonderful.
exactly the problem i have on editing travel videos. Too many shots but hard to put together so it makes sense. This is good advice
appreciate the honestly with pure travel videos. they're cool and all for some commercial work but do get repetitive with lack of invested story. nice break down
You make it sounds so simple! What happens before and after. That's all I needed. Cheers!

That was awesome Brandon. I’m going to use these ideas when shooting my guitar lesson videos.
You simply explained this well easy to understand what is a shot and a scene in creating a story.
Oh man, this is pure value! I've been doing photography for the past 1,5 years and dabbled into videography like 6 months ago. I still struggle with storytelling sometimes, so this was such a useful video man, thanks for this!

Probably the best tips i've ever heard here on RUclips about filmmaking.
Great explanation Brandon 👌 hope you are doing well and get to finally travel again.

Great advice! And a great reminder for me, even though I’ve been shooting b-roll for over 20 years.

Awesome video! I'm really wanting to work on this.
