travel filmmaking is so oversaturated nowadays its really hard to stand out. However Brandon always sticks to his roots and makes something so unique everytime.
I agree with over saturated. But specially cause in all those videos... there is no story at all. Brandon Li's films are great... but even though they tend to be the same again... But unarguably for now the best I have seen.
Extremely useful video! Brandon, you’re very cool! Here are the timecodes: 00:31 - PROBLEM #1, Not enough motion 01:15 - Timelapse 01:23 - Drone 01:30 - Handheld gimbal 01:37 - Shoot from a moving vehicle 01:51 - Look for life around the building 02:40 - PROBLEM #2, No story 02:58 - Film a defined beginning & end 03:42 - Arrange clips from day to night 04:14 - Add voiceover or narration 04:40 - Alan Watts 05:04 - Add your own voice 05:23 - PROBLEM #3, Over-shooting 06:02 - Shoot only when the light is best 06:52 - PROBLEM #4, Too much gear 07:14 - Bring only enough gear for what you’re specifically shooting Thanks for a great video ;)
You have great advices for myself. I'm getting on a vacation with my family to Hong Kong and I can't wait to film the entire 5 days trip. But you are right, its a family vacation. Spending time together with family during the vacation is more important than film them with a camera. Thanks!
Brandon~ We appreciate your insight, expertise, delivery and lack of pretension. Thanks for investing in us with your channel. Superb content and class. Safe travels! ~ Melody and Vincent
This is hands down the best video I’ve seen with tips for impromptu travel videos. You’re not always going to have a script or plan but how do you find the balance to create an amazing video. Thank you!
You are by far my most favorite travel filmmaker. This is hands down the best video I have seen from you and I plan to watch this again and again. Great work super helpful. Shortest 8 minute video on youtube.
This is the single video that gave me the best tips on RUclips ever. So much noise out there, it's nice to see one that really helps and i'm looking forward to try everything on my next trip. Thank you, Brandon!
These tips are AMAZING for my cinematic vanlife channel! Thank you so much Brandon, you're one of the main reasons I'm pushing my filmmaking further every day. Peace & blessings my friend.
Thanks for the tip, especially the thinking more about how to capture motion around buildings. I also like to add for building shots window reflections, water reflections, time lapse of blurred people around a building, clocks and fountains! Amazing you hit 100k, didnt feel that long ago when I was following your channel and it was just over 10k!!! Congrats!
I know I definitely overshoot and that if I do make a travel video it is very basic and typical. However these tips have brought some ideas to mind - but for the mean time I want to focus more on different ways to edit and learn to get better shots.
Great tips, I especially appreciate no3, I'm very aware of when I'm shooting too much vs taking things in, the tip is a great mental compromise to get the best of both.
Congrats on your 100K subscribers and thank you for the incredible amount of great information you share with any of us who want to one day be able to shoot half as decent as you.
Congrats on 100K+ well done and well deserved. Hope one day I can hit that land mark. Thank you for the AWESOME knowledge and tips .... learning so much
yeah i used to do that mistake when i spent too much time filming and not enjoy the moment! i guess it all comes with experience filming while during vacation.
I'm going to Northern Ireland tomorrow for a week and the idea is to create a short travelmovie with a narrated story. I will write the script today, but the challenge for me is to make the shots, since I will be all by myself in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for the tips and especially about the movement shots!
Thank you Brandon! You give the best and most practical advice as always :) i definitely appreciate that you so openly share with us all these tips.. for that you have gained 1 more youtube subsciber in me! Keep up the great work, hope ur channel grows even more because you deserve it!
Fantastic tips.. I'm a beginner and these tips sound like an awesome checklist.. Appreciate you sharing..and congratulations on a 100k.. Wish you a million soon
Brandon, thank you for sharing. I highly appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos by adding example shoots for each point you make. It really helps me to understand and memorize the key take-aways.
Thanks a ton. You've covered those problems which I didn't even realise I encountered. Had subscribed when your subscriber count was at 65k. Congratulations on reaching 100k. But you definitely are light years ahead of those who have more subscribers. Math doesn't matter. 👍
Another great video. As the solo videographer for my company's channel I've learned a lot from your videos. Thanks so much for posting all the helpful practical insight. - Andrew
thank you for your amazing tips Brandon. What about tips to overcome photographer’s shyness? I’m always afraid to bother people around and that they can be really upset by me shooting them.
This is gold, thank you. Going to watch again. The best part of your advice videos is that I can immediatly go out and try something. Relaxing during the day, but recording at golden hour I will try tomorrow. Cheers - TIm.
0:31 problem 1: NOT ENOUGH MOTION 2:40 problem 2: NO STORY 5:23 problem 3: OVER-SHOOTING 6:52 problem 4: TOO MUCH GEAR Awesome video! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this wonderful tips! Just finished my trip yesterday though and it was awesome tour of Cebu. If only I have seen this video before, then I have taken a lot better shots and enjoyed the trip at the same time. ^_^
Thanks, for a great video. I'm a senior citizen, AKA old man, and shoot 90% of my videos durimg our travels. I use a cellphone and FCPX to edit. But most of the things I shoot are immobile, museums, buildings, etc. I try to make my movies interesting. But what found out in my late 60s was that if you are making movies--something has to move! That's why they're called movies! And that is a challenge.
Dude, your advice videos are so useful and I also love that you didn't make a huge deal about hitting 100k, humility is an underrated quality, especially with 'youtubers'.
Love the advice Brandon. In the process of making a video at the moment and want it to have story (lacking in my other travel videos). I decided to go with the voiceover option already, using my own voice. I really like the telephone idea. Also the advice about a start and end point, obvious things but something I didn't give much thought to until now.
Brandon, I truly love your videos. Your knowledge about film making is breath taking. Wondering if you could make a tutorial on the A6xxx video settings!
I love the fact that your tips are all actionable! I have only been making "cinematic travel montages" so far and I've wanted to incorporate storytelling into them but didn't really know how (other than a voiceover) so thank you very much for the three other tips :)
Thanks for these advices! One problem I always have I think is shoot too much. As your advice I started to realise sometimes we need to relax our self and plan our shooting. That way we can get more usable shots and when comes to the time to edit those footage will be far more easy. Thanks! Love your channel. Have you ever been to Malaysia? I hope one day can have the chance to meet you.
Congratz for the 100k landmark! HIGHLY DESERVED! Thank you for always providing us with great videos and tips, and for me who was in an editing lump, i feel remotivated after watching this!
i remember watching this video a couple of months ago and i love it how its still relevant. you discuss so many things that i wouldn't of every thought of when it comes to travel footage. its not just about the footage its about the experience. but this coming December I'll be traveling for video so i'll be doing video non stop. but i'll still try to remember to take in the experience thanks again for the tips Brandon
cheapo airlines are restricting carry-on luggage , so I'm limited to an 18-140 kit lens , and an ultra-wide zoom lens for my pair of Nikon D 7000 series DSLR's .My problem is I don't want to spend money on a state-of-the-art mic , as I'm a stills photographer at heart
I've been traveling a bunch over the years and got my kit down fairly small. 2 bags total and both can carry on with me. You need to look into tech that's built tough but made small. I've recently found my travel tripod being the Benro Aero4, breaks down and fits in the overhead. I've even traveled with an FS5 + A7rii combo using this setup. Good luck!
Now that I have the Nikon D 7200 DSLR , I might just be tempted to get out of my stills comfort zone , and try some video work for a change , thanks to this video

Always useful info. Thank you.

It seems so simple but it's so easy to forget. Movies do have to move. Your shot could be saved by something as minor as a flag waving in the wind.
Great advice . This is really helpful.
Awesome work mate, great value shooting points.
Dude, your advice videos are so useful and I also love that you didn't make a huge deal about hitting 100k, humility is an underrated quality, especially with 'youtubers'.

I truly love your videos.

Biggest travel problem is lugging shit around
...or... lugging family around...
@Mark LOL, true that :D
cheapo airlines are restricting carry-on luggage , so I'm limited to an 18-140 kit lens , and an ultra-wide zoom lens for my pair of Nikon D 7000 series DSLR's .My problem is I don't want to spend money on a state-of-the-art mic , as I'm a stills photographer at heart
