Summary: 1. Every sequence should have a beginning a middle and an end - 3 to 5 shots 2. Every shot should either be instilling a question in the viewers mind, or it should be answering questions. The questions are who, what, why? 3. End with a strong resolution to the sequence. 4. Show don’t tell, leave a little mystery, a bit of something that the viewer can figure out themselves.
Show, don’t tell. Probably one of the best advise for any kind of visual storytelling. Thanks for this video, I learnt something very important today 🤝❤️
Out of the sea of content around storytelling this is hands down the best one. The clear lessons, the Hitchcock, the ability to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk. Superb 👌
We (other youtubers) are sooo lucky to have you in this space. More tutorials please 🙏 And thank you for sharing this information with the rest of us 👊
Jesse puts soooooo much work into every video, I can't even imagine all the moving lights around, positioning cameras, framing, etc etc etc.... And the scripting, because even the video about storytelling has storytelling in it... Incredible!
This content is solid gold... instructive and inspirational at the same time. I love how you lead with your own example, break it down with humor and personality and keep the audience watching. Don't mind me... gonna just sit down and watch this again!
Thanks, really helping me understand more about story telling ive been so obsessed with what gear to get but now im just gonna use what ever and try get a good story. thanks
I enjoyed the last part. Making daily vlogs is hard, but i hope to accomplish two things from it - consistency, and skill. I want to be a better story teller. Thanks man.
I've never framed filming sequences as proposing a question for the audience and its genius, honestly feel like an idiot for not seeing that. Again an awesome video man!
Wow!!! Your filmmaking is amazing. Studying this. Trying to add more cinematic styling to my videos and vlogs. Thanks for the inspiration and information.
I love this, Jesse! There is a lot of information provided on your video for sequencing. I also love that you mentioned the time it took to make this video, as you were not expecting it to take that long. That is an inside look into storytelling and is relevant to many newcomers, which is learning to understand that filming the video sequences can take a lot of time and not get discouraged by it. I struggle with this a lot. I never started my channel for many reasons, but one of them is timing and sequencing. I have what you call an archive of videos I have recorded in the past two years waiting for me to build up enough courage and confidence to put my stuff out there for the world to see. Maybe one day I'll use this format to tell my story, so for now, ill do what I have always done with videos like yours and add them to my video library. Thank you, Jesse!
your sequences are on another level. And I feel like you explain everything so much better than other youtubers.....and simultaneously demonstrate it by showing.
This is absolute genius. I bet half the people or more that stumble upon this have no clue how difficult this is and he makes it seem like a cake walk.
I love it! Quote of the day: every shot needs to answer a question or ask a question… Actually, that goes for every scene, and every act, and if you get really Noble, The whole film asks a question
I absolutely loved this video man! And I loved those clips of Alfred Hitchcock sprinkled in every now and then. I seriously still don’t understand why you don’t have a million subscribers yet! GRRRRR!
The whole concept of making each sequence (or shot) either ask a question or answer one that was asked earlier is a huge light bulb for me - thanks, man! 👍🏻
This was some great advice. I knew about the importance of presenting questions to the viewer to help move the piece along, but I forgot hoe important that is at the level of the sequence. What a great lesson, especially how you showed it within the video. Thanks so much.
Learned so much from this video 💯! One of your best ones yet! Can’t wait to start implementing this! Stop spoon-feeding and leave space for your audience to wonder. Create intrigue! So much gold here 🤯 Seriously Thank You man!!!
Definitely appreciate the TIME & DEDICATION you bring to the table for the industry of video creation this is another GIANT of a video I would say CLEARLY communicates what needs to be done as it relates to creating better videos and actually TELLING A STORY without actually telling the story. Great Job Jesse. I've been a follower since idk....... I started following you lol
Okay - so i have to say i bought your moment course, i just recently bought Chris Hau's course as well. i didn't realize what i was looking for in both courses was this video. I don't know how to explain it but this so perfectly explains why you make a sequence not how. I feel like so many creators teach you how to make a sequence - hell i've even seen that Hitchcock clip million times. This was so well done that this 9 minute video could be sold like a course.
Expert level storytelling. Each clip seems to match perfectly with the dialogue. I appreciate so much about this video beyond the subject matter. Kudos!
Brilliantly broken down. I know all of this stuff from years of studying it, but it's SO easy to forget when you're actually out creating content. Easier said than done I suppose. So this video was a great reminder to keep it top of mind!
That Cristof sequence was so dope. The music. The final reveal. Dang. Great vid man. Excited to see what forced change forces you into. I have a feeling it’ll be huge for you.
Dear RUclips algorithm. Please show this channel some more love. This is probably one of the most underrated channels on RUclips. This is awesome. To 1mill subs and more!
Not to take away from the incredible info you're giving, but can we spare a moment for how easy old mate Alfred explained context in storytelling? Get it Alfie!!
Such a great way to break down this process. To me, you are truly one of the best out there doing this Jesse. I always get excited when I see you have something new up. Best of luck on the buildout of the new space.
When You put Your videos/sequeces together it makes so much sense. You are a great storyteller. I wonder whether you have to be born with that skill or can you learn it thorugh practice.
Jesse my MAN! You just slapped me in the face with knowledge and ripped my videos making process. your mindset is GOLD! You’re a legend my friend, thank you 🙏 all you share has shaped my life. I hope I can meet you one day and just buy you a hot dog or something 🙌 thank you
Absolutely loved your definition, practical breakdown of what a sequence is. The was a seemingly nice flow especially when mentioning your “sponsor”. It didn’t fill like an interruption but like an add detail toward your subject regarding on how to properly sequence our content. Well done for sure!!!#LEGiT #Sequencing
This was super helpful. In my earlier videos I know I did EXACTLY what you said. "Hey I'm going to do this..." then shows me doing it. Watching your videos and others in the squad let me on to this and I think I am improving at it. Thanks for the tips and good luck in the new space.
wow, really enjoyed that! I feel like I learnt a lot in only 9 minutes! I struggle with shooting footage of me actually making things that seems to lose peoples interest quite quickly when the products are so amazing! I can now see why that is 😍👍

Holy cow, this is a whole new level of storytelling skill. The show don’t tell as it’s best.
Out of the sea of content around storytelling this is hands down the best one. The clear lessons, the Hitchcock, the ability to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk. Superb 👌
Thanks Pat!
I just love how clean your stuff looks.

Wow!!! Your filmmaking is amazing. Studying this. Trying to add more cinematic styling to my videos and vlogs. Thanks for the inspiration and information.
Thank you!
This video is so good. It’s so meta too. Sequences inside of sequences talking about the importance of sequences.
I love this, Jesse!

Expert level storytelling. Each clip seems to match perfectly with the dialogue. I appreciate so much about this video beyond the subject matter. Kudos!

When you said "Hi Dave!" at 5:33, I thought you were greeting me and just broke the fourth wall.
All Daves are Dave.

This is undoubtedly your best video 🙂 It explains and applies the theory so, so well 😊 What a joy to watch.

Commenting again now after watching the whole vid- I found great value in this. Thank you. Got me thinking how I can improve my vids 🙏
You’re already killing it Laura! You’ve got a natural sense for this that comes through in your videos.
Great video, I love both sequences featured in the video, but the shipping container one is so good. Thanks!
This is the best story telling how to video I have watched, ever. thanks so. much!
Dragging myself out of a creative rut this year, and your videos always help get my gears turning. Big thanks to you and the rest of the team!
So abstract, yet so powerful.
