I trained under Ricardo "Rey" Diogo in Venice, CA years ago who was under Carlson. An absolute killer, good man, and fostered a very effective and welcoming training environment.
I train everyday at a royce gracie school and he pops up every now and then and does seminars as well. We are taught in a very traditional way, very self defense driven the way grand master helio would teach. I love GJJ!
My pops and the hood showed me how to box throughout my life. I actually learned how to box as a kid from my father. First combat sport training for me and typical Mexican dads teachings.
Raymond Rocco I agree. I’m a Jiu Jitsu guy but I boxed too. I’m certainly no expert at boxing but I know how to throw a punch. Just knowing how to actually throw a punch is important and should most certainly not be overlooked.
Total respect for the gracies, I am a purple belt in Gracie jiu jitsu 3 gens below Rickson and they have a big impact on me and my team especially keeping the self defense aspects of jiu jitsu at the forefront of day to day training.
Nikolaij Brouiller this is 100% what Relson is all about too. While Relson doesn’t discourage competing ( he competed for years and had many successful teams for a long time) he does rank self defense number one as far as importance is concerned. 98 % of people arent going to be world champs and do Jiu Jitsu for fun, a good work out and self defense. In that sense the Gracies are EXTREMELY relevant today. Maybe they don’t have as much success as they used to on the competition circuit ( although that’s debatable cause the best team on the planet IS technically under Renzo) but to the average guy who doesn’t have aspirations of being a world champ and only wants to protect themselves, it’s very helpful and still relevant today. I’m a black belt under Relson and my WHOLE black belt test WITH Relson ( i tested and was promoted by him personally) was ALL self defense, there was no sport grappling AT ALL. His reasoning was “well you are a brown belt who has been training a long time, I fully confident you know how to roll and grapple and can at least hold your own, I’m not concerned about that. I need to know you know ALL the self defense stuff and can teach it other people”.

I've trained with Pedro Sauer (20 years ago in SLC, Utah), and at 10th Planet in LA, also with Rener.... but still, this video taught me things I didn't know. The way you broke it down sounds like a great strategy of learning ,fighting then teaching and then orchestrating,.that's a great way of explaining it cause naturally as you get older your body can't do what a younger can,they have a great chain of heirarchy
Royce has a studio in Harbor City, CA. I go to Gracie University in Torrane, CA. Thier class schedules fits my schedule. And they teach strictly self defense. I'm not into sports but its alot of fun and a good workout but I also like to put the gloves on, which changes everything when the punches are flying, which for me is the most impotant training. And two days out of six days at the Gracie University is sparring with gloves. Which Gracies teach self defence?
At Kama Jiu Jitsu do you require your students to train in a gi in order to get promoted stripes/belts? Ive run into a problem where ive been training for 3 going on 4 years and because ive decided to stop training in the gi my professor hasn’t given me a blue belt yet . I train regularly 2-3 times a week sometimes 4 times a week. Im at a point where i really want to compete, but ethically and personally wouldn’t be right if i registered in a tournament as a white belt, not sure if i can register independently and just tell them im a different belt and if i did that would i be stepping on the toes of my academy. Unfortunately its the only academy in my area. Was just curious if you have heard of anything like this happening before? Which personally I don’t care about what color belt i wear , i know my skill level, and i have never given it a 2nd thought until deciding i want to get into the competition circuit.

I trained with Carley Gracie and then Charles Gracie, both in private garages decades ago. Then later on I trained at Ralph Gracie under Kurt. Kurt's such a great guy and great instructor.
Ryan, you look pretty relaxed. I train in a Rodrigio Vaghi affiliate academy, and have always loved the importance of BJJ lineage, and especially those with strong Gracie roots.
I do agree dude. It sucks balls how you cannot do so many judo techniques now in the name of Olympic/ijf rules. The whole sport thing is gay af. I will say though that the times I have watched bjj comps, it just looks like footsie.
This is why lineage has always been important in the martial arts. It is the strongest indicator as to whether your school is actually teaching the art as it was originally intended. In the Japanese arts you look to trace your lineage back to certain teachers and BJJ is no different. The US approach to commercialising/monetising everything is probably the chief reason, if one exists, that we now talk about `watered down’ Jiu Jitsu. Of course interpretation can be a great thing but at what cost? If something wasn’t broken to begin with then why all the meddling? Of course these are bigger questions than I can answer, but it’s essentially what is taking place.

Proud of my schools lineage. Grandmaster Helio, Master Royler, Professor Will - me. My understanding is Royler still teaches regularly(ish) with his traveling schedule. When he visited Australia he was teaching every scheduled class at my Academy ontop of a 3 (almost 4) hour seminar
off topic question but i was wondering how a training and rolling session looks like in a more self defence orientated school? for example do you do more takedowns? or when rolling do you sometimes use gloves to be able to simulate a real fight? my school sadly focusses only on competition so i have no clue how a normal training day is at a school like yours. btw sorry if my english doesn't make alot of sence.
It's not so much that we will roll with gloves, or work on takedowns as part of our rolling (too many great opportunities to really injure each other, see also: judo). But, we will drill stand-up defense to clinch, or back-take with gloves and an uke that's swinging with maybe %50-60 intent to strike. And those drills can get pretty heated, pretty quickly, especially when the class is watching (ego ain't your amigo, kids). Takedowns are part of almost every basics class, as we drill the real world "this is what might happen when" scenarios for ~1/3 of class time. Again, those are drills with little to no resistance initially. If the partners are very familiar with the defenses being worked, then a professor might give us the green light to add resistance or pressure. As for groundwork, next time you're working mount escape, have your partner just try to touch your head during your escape. Now, take that sensation and apply it to other positions, and you'll get a feel for how we approach self-defense instruction while on the ground.
They come from Renzo which learned from Carlos Gracie Jr. (Gracie Barra founder). Carlos Gracie Jr. was Rolls Gracie pupil back in the day. Rolls was the his blood brother but he was mainly raised by Hélio Gracies.
It’s “possible,” but sometimes it’s difficult to get an appointment with them unless you know them. Rickson in particular, is extremely difficult to get an appointment with these days.
I’m not a fan of the Gracie Ego and “Cult” like belief and following, however I must admit the best team/individuals in Jiu Jitsu today come from Renzo Gracie’s gym here in NYC. I don’t know in Renzo is a key piece of the instruction of Jiu Jitsu there today, however I must say as a person that loves Jiu Jitsu living in NYC, if I can train anywhere at anytime, it would be there, and it will be when I do choose to go back.
Renzo was the best gracie, he was a real mma fighter, most gracie were just ibbjf fighters and trainers, few were real mma guys carlos and Renzo were real deal tough guys

My martial arts school has Kron Gracie curriculum. Sadly it is closed by Covid. It was a Mom & Pop operation. The only other place in my area, was a Gracie Baha. Let's just say my Purple Belt level instructor, could bet all the Blk belts at that school.
I would definitely add the Valente brothers in Miami as part of the Gracie "family" especially since they are continuing the heritage of self-defense-based jiu-jitsu.

Jean Jacques is one of the five Machado brothers that include the likes of Rigan and Carlos. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and he learned directly from the Gracies 40 years ago, as the Machados were connected to the Gracies through their mother who happened to be the sister of Carlos Gracie Jr's mother.
Ryan, I’m curious why you would frown upon adding wrestling or striking into gjj? If GJJ has “is not just ground work” but yet has been proven to be inferior in takedowns and striking, why not welcome wrestling/boxing/Muai Thai into the curriculum and exclude the time spent on striking/takedowns from GJJ?
People can add any skill set they want to make it what they want. All I’m saying, is that GJJ with striking and wrestling added is no longer GJJ, is all.

The Gracies are "still" relevant. They also charge more for BJJ (GJJ) lessons than most of their competitors do. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is patented, and schools that teach this system specifically must pay a Gracie family member a fee in order to be accredited by them.

Potential Video Subject: Does having such a strict curriculum produce the same jiujjtsu players? I feel like everyone would roll the same way especially at white and blue belt. Majdi Kamal Depends on what you are looking for. The Machados, as a rule, are more focused on competing. Not much Self Defense Done there. There students have little to no striking awareness on the ground as a result. They do not teach you how to close the distance against punches. The brothers all know the stuff, they just do not promote or teach the material.
It is not Jiu Jitsu, it is GRACIE JIU JITSU aka BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU. The distinction is necessary because the japanese Jiu Jitsu is called Jiu Jitsu and it is not the same art Mr.Helio Gracie created. So for as long as there is BJJ being learned or used anywhere in the World the GRACIE FAMILY is being represented.
I think this is misleading saying the Gracie family were the only ones teaching Jiu Jitsu in the U.S.A. There may not have been BJJ schools, but there have been a lot of Ju-Jitsu schools since the 1950s including off the top of my head Proff. Florendo Vistacion, Dr. Moses Powell, Dr. Philip Chenique, Proff. Wally Jay etc. who all ran Ju-Jitsu schools. The Gracie Family I believe should be credited with making Jiu Jitsu to the public eye and legitimizing the effectiveness of the art.

I think the introduction of other instructors is integral to the development of jiu Jitsu. If we look at one coach in particular, John Danaher, whose precision in nomenclature, in my mind, will propel learning methodology radically and the proof is in the students ( GSP, Tonon, Ryan Bros, etc). I'd like to know your thoughts on jiu Jitsu taxonomy vs the 'im going to show you a move, dont know what it is called, but here is what you do' approach. Are you specific in your use of terms labels and definitions?
Great talk, but just one little detail. I would NOT bunch the machados with the gracies, never. What the machados were teaching, spreading, and still do is the original sportive aspect of jiu jitsu. They have NEVER taught jiu jitsu for actual fighting. I should know, I trained with them in the 90's.

So while they were sourcing students in the garage days from Rorion (before the opening of the GRACIE Academy and “the split”) they weren’t teaching self defense? I thought they didn’t make that decision until AFTER Rorion told them their services were no longer needed.
The Gracie Family are the most relevant. For me, the Helio Gracie line is the most important, as they kept the original teaching. I am not at all in favor of sports, and the adjustments that have to be made to accommodate industry. This is coming from someone who does not do jiujitsu.
Good view points, but I'd have to disagree about the Machado's not being technically not family member. I'd say they are 100% and at that some of them were more skilled than some you mentioned.
Pretty much any Japanese martial art has many schools run by various families with there own slightly different style of judo, karate, jujitsu, etc. They usually expect the family to pass it on and try to keep it distinct. - Rusty
And they behaved like one. Helio, George and Carlos Gracie used to ambush rivals and hit them between the three with metal pipes or metal objects. It's documented that they did it at least 3 times. Once they were sentenced to jail, but they had highly influential friends (remember they taught JJ just to affluent members of Rio's society) and they were soon released. In that occasion the victim was a wrestler, a respected teacher of physical education, that wasn't very impressed by the Gracies skills, and respectfully challenge them. He beat Carlos Gracie and they didn't like it. The Gracies have a long story of not accepting when someone beats them. His name was Rufino dos Santos.
i think you may be exaggerating some (a lot). do you know of the time the Luta Livre team "ambushed" the Gracie Academy with between 40-60 fighters when the academy had 10 (or less) members in there? if the Gracie family were so dastardly, why did the Luta Livre team not go in and just mess shit up? after all, they'd have deserved it, wouldn't they? instead, they had a fight or two that they did (Rickson v Hugo Duarte, and Royler v Eugenio, IIRC), and after they were over, it was over. both sides separated and went their own ways. at the end of the day, you were not there to see the Rufino event, so you've got a narrative in your head, and there's no changing your mind.

Would not say irrelevant its merely that there a more bjj students than there are gracies. So they wont be as central now that there are teaching black belts that are non gracies (even if their lineage is from a gracie) plus people are now beginning to innovate and diverge in both technique and philosophy to the point that one could say 10th planet jj is not gracie jj.
I hope they never put BJJ in the Olympic Games, that will certainly kill the art as the many tournaments did, even in Brazil in the 80s wasn’t to many tournaments and without as many, we had more time to do what I call “the complete jiu-jítsu”, with a lot of self defense, throws and ground, was a time that our goal wasn’t only win medals, but training of jiu-jítsu was a matter of surviving the streets of Rio, and that was the thinking among all the jiu-jítsu school’s the Gracies and non Gracies (like ours the Fadda Academy), but the creation of the BJJ F by Carlos Gracie Jr unified the country and changed the game “arte suave”.
But most people don't live in Río, and most people won't be involved in a street fight in their life time. And most people who are actually attacked in the street, will be able to defend themselves with any BJJ techniques (unless they have the real bad luck to be attacked by a martial artists or just some guy with tons of muscles). So most people want to train, get in shape, get some nice credentials, win some competitions (which in 99% of the cases are the only fights they will be involved in ever). It's always important to let the art follow its own course, many times it is picked up from where others left it and being added more aspects, more techniques. Sorry to tell you, but the Gracies stuff at a certain point stopped working, at least not against everyone (I saw it myself on a couple of occasions), people picked up the weak points, and when there is another martial art (doesn't matter which one right now) which evolved BECAUSE of BJJ (credits due to BJJ without a doubt), by learning how to avoid being at a disadvantage to a BJJ fighter, that's when BJJ (or any other art) also needs to move on to the next step. That''s called evolution. After all, the Gracies didn't stay in Río, they moved on, so should BJJ. Krav Maga was invented because of anti-Semitic attacks against Jews in the streets of Czechoslovakia. Very useful back in the day. Then within the military it had to be completely adjusted. Then in the streets of Tel Aviv during the terror attacks, ex-soldiers noticed that without weapons, the military KM had to be adjusted again. So it evolved. I will not even start telling you the story of Karate. Martial arts must evolve, nostalgy doesn't cut it.
Cool History! Man, you need to hit the beach. You're losing your tan. IBJJF will not relinquish to the IOC. However, the IOC is looking into a freestyle grappling competition. I think if a Freestyle Grappling is approved by the IOC it might turn a bit from the IBJJF -- USA FreeStyle Grappling matches will be pushed by government programs in tournaments much like Wrestling and Judo is pushed by other countries. I'd love to see Gary Tonon and Gordan Ryan win a medal for their country in freestyle grappling. Winning a medal for your country would be good for grappling. I know it was good for snowboarding -- Shawn White. Love the content -- hope you hit the beach.
Yes, you can learn jiu-jitsu anywhere. The problem is that most of these academies teach only sports jiu-jitsu! It is very difficult to find academies that teach the self-defence form of the art! (BTW, not saying sport BJJ won't work in the street. Just saying it's not optimal.)
I believe they are still around and strong in one way or another. But even if figuratively was the end for them, they probably would’ve had done enough !!! The revolution...the UFC the highest grappling level of now days all because of what they did.
I’m pretty sure Renzo and Ralph have separated from Gracie Barra. Ralph punching out Flavio Almeida pretty much sealed that. It’s a shame because I’ve seen Renzo teach many many times back in the day wearing his Gracie Barra gi with the Tasmanian Devil logo. However, Renzo’s claim that Gracie Barra has gone soft maybe legit. But that leads me to wonder, hasn’t Renzo been much more focused on sport rather than traditional? I wonder....
When Renzo competes, he does MMA and No-Gi. He has not competed in a Gi in many years Training does not count. If you count MMA as sport, than you are right. As a concept, when JJ people talk sport, they mean IBJJF. That is not Renzo’s focus. That is Gracie Barra.
If i remember correctly, Gregor "Gracie" is the half brother to Rolles and Igor whom he shares a mother with, but of different fathers. If Rolles and Igor's father was Rolls Gracie, unless Rolls' wife (and mother of his sons) is also a Gracie herself (by blood, not marriage) or married another Gracie male after Rolls passed, there is no way Gregor is a Gracie by birth. Of course, there are other Gracie males who's father is not a Gracie, but their mothers are (Roger and Cesar come to mind).

i dont think its that crucial to have a name brand..if you have access to a gracie and it seems right for you then go for it but it doesnt seem relevant anymore -there are too many high level black belts without name recognition out there teaching really good quality jj..just find an academy that you jive with and a good instructor and train consistently and stick with it

I studied under Master Sauer for a time in Sterling, VA and am studying under the Machados. I wouldn't say that I'm unschooled in the history. Stop deleting my comments.
I also know the Gracies are mostly petty bs artists who use the title granted to them in the UFC to further their own heritage. Master Sauer was teaching the FBI and Navy SEALs, the Machados are responsible for evolving the game. Don't tell me that Royce is something special and don't tell me Rose knows what she's talking about concerning the rules. I know better, as do a lot of others.

I don't even think Jui Jitsu is relevant anymore, its been watered down to the point of being dangerous in a real life street situation, i think catch is far more relevant, teaching someone to fight from the bottom/armbars /triangles etc is just nuts.

Grapples whenever used as target practice, in fact grappling always had the advantage in striker v wrestler matches throughout recorded history for the very same reasons they always will,its almost impossible to prevent the clinch if you yourself are not trained in wrestling, been proven since mixed fighting began
@@scarred10 I knew somebody personally that fought in the original UFC before they added rules and weight classes and the hidden reason it was stopped for many many years is people were going in there and doing the martial arts the actual way it was created for . Grappling in itself is the lower level . If you do not make a mistake you will never be taken to the ground to begin with . Again I have nothing against it I study BJJ myself . I drive a holls-hoyce phantom. Sweet ride. The Brazilian accent used to pronounce names in English is pretentious and annoying. Anyone who went to Brazil and demanded everyone pronounce their name in an American or British accent would be ostracized. If i have to say your name in a foreign accent i won't say it at all. Also, the worship of Carlos and Helio and that first generation as prize pupils of Maeda is dishonest if you just look into that a little bit. What they did to donato and rufino was bad enough, never mind the rest of it. The family promoted vale tudo and themselves very well and are probably the most important grappling group over the past 50 years and many of them seem like decent people, but that name comes with a lot of baggage as well. Business-wise it's a successful brand but fighting-wise (outside sport bjj) the world has left them behind. I'd rather just learn grappling from good grapplers and not have to deal with all the Gracie baggage.
“True” cousins (through blood) to Carlos, Sr’s youngest children (Rillion, Carlos, Jr, Crolin, IIRC) through his final wife, but not his older children (Rolls, Carlson, Robson, et al). And not cousins at all to Helio’s children. But Brazilians use the term “cousin” for a lot of people who are not technically related to them through blood or marriage.
Don't forget the Carlson Gracie lineage. American Top Team, American Killer Bees and Brazilian Top Team were formed by former Carlson students.
I trained under Ricardo "Rey" Diogo in Venice, CA years ago who was under Carlson. An absolute killer, good man, and fostered a very effective and welcoming training environment.
I train everyday at a royce gracie school and he pops up every now and then and does seminars as well. We are taught in a very traditional way, very self defense driven the way grand master helio would teach. I love GJJ!

Total respect for the gracies, I am a purple belt in Gracie jiu jitsu 3 gens below Rickson and they have a big impact on me and my team especially keeping the self defense aspects of jiu jitsu at the forefront of day to day training.
Nikolaij Brouiller this is 100% what Relson is all about too. While Relson doesn’t discourage competing ( he competed for years and had many successful teams for a long time) he does rank self defense number one as far as importance is concerned. 98 % of people arent going to be world champs and do Jiu Jitsu for fun, a good work out and self defense. In that sense the Gracies are EXTREMELY relevant today. Maybe they don’t have as much success as they used to on the competition circuit ( although that’s debatable cause the best team on the planet IS technically under Renzo) but to the average guy who doesn’t have aspirations of being a world champ and only wants to protect themselves, it’s very helpful and still relevant today. I’m a black belt under Relson and my WHOLE black belt test WITH Relson ( i tested and was promoted by him personally) was ALL self defense, there was no sport grappling AT ALL. His reasoning was “well you are a brown belt who has been training a long time, I fully confident you know how to roll and grapple and can at least hold your own, I’m not concerned about that. I need to know you know ALL the self defense stuff and can teach it other people”.

Royce has a studio in Harbor City, CA. I go to Gracie University in Torrane, CA. Thier class schedules fits my schedule. And they teach strictly self defense. I'm not into sports but its alot of fun and a good workout but I also like to put the gloves on, which changes everything when the punches are flying, which for me is the most impotant training. And two days out of six days at the Gracie University is sparring with gloves. Which Gracies teach self defence?
At Kama Jiu Jitsu do you require your students to train in a gi in order to get promoted stripes/belts? Ive run into a problem where ive been training for 3 going on 4 years and because ive decided to stop training in the gi my professor hasn’t given me a blue belt yet . I train regularly 2-3 times a week sometimes 4 times a week. Im at a point where i really want to compete, but ethically and personally wouldn’t be right if i registered in a tournament as a white belt, not sure if i can register independently and just tell them im a different belt and if i did that would i be stepping on the toes of my academy. Unfortunately its the only academy in my area. Was just curious if you have heard of anything like this happening before? Which personally I don’t care about what color belt i wear , i know my skill level, and i have never given it a 2nd thought until deciding i want to get into the competition circuit.
I feel so blessed to be that second Generation of Jiujitsu fighters who learned from Relson’s First Students. He’s my Jiujitsu Grandpa!

I trained with Carley Gracie and then Charles Gracie, both in private garages decades ago. Then later on I trained at Ralph Gracie under Kurt. Kurt's such a great guy and great instructor.

The moment you set a rule, "no punches", for example, it's a sport.
This is why lineage has always been important in the martial arts. It is the strongest indicator as to whether your school is actually teaching the art as it was originally intended. In the Japanese arts you look to trace your lineage back to certain teachers and BJJ is no different.
The US approach to commercialising/monetising everything is probably the chief reason, if one exists, that we now talk about `watered down’ Jiu Jitsu. Of course interpretation can be a great thing but at what cost? If something wasn’t broken to begin with then why all the meddling? Of course these are bigger questions than I can answer, but it’s essentially what is taking place.

off topic question but i was wondering how a training and rolling session looks like in a more self defence orientated school? for example do you do more takedowns? or when rolling do you sometimes use gloves to be able to simulate a real fight? my school sadly focusses only on competition so i have no clue how a normal training day is at a school like yours. btw sorry if my english doesn't make alot of sence.
It's not so much that we will roll with gloves, or work on takedowns as part of our rolling (too many great opportunities to really injure each other, see also: judo). But, we will drill stand-up defense to clinch, or back-take with gloves and an uke that's swinging with maybe %50-60 intent to strike. And those drills can get pretty heated, pretty quickly, especially when the class is watching (ego ain't your amigo, kids). Takedowns are part of almost every basics class, as we drill the real world "this is what might happen when" scenarios for ~1/3 of class time. Again, those are drills with little to no resistance initially. If the partners are very familiar with the defenses being worked, then a professor might give us the green light to add resistance or pressure.
As for groundwork, next time you're working mount escape, have your partner just try to touch your head during your escape. Now, take that sensation and apply it to other positions, and you'll get a feel for how we approach self-defense instruction while on the ground.

They come from Renzo which learned from Carlos Gracie Jr. (Gracie Barra founder). Carlos Gracie Jr. was Rolls Gracie pupil back in the day. Rolls was the his blood brother but he was mainly raised by Hélio Gracies.

It’s “possible,” but sometimes it’s difficult to get an appointment with them unless you know them. Rickson in particular, is extremely difficult to get an appointment with these days.

I’m not a fan of the Gracie Ego and “Cult” like belief and following, however I must admit the best team/individuals in Jiu Jitsu today come from Renzo Gracie’s gym here in NYC. I don’t know in Renzo is a key piece of the instruction of Jiu Jitsu there today, however I must say as a person that loves Jiu Jitsu living in NYC, if I can train anywhere at anytime, it would be there, and it will be when I do choose to go back.
Renzo was the best gracie, he was a real mma fighter, most gracie were just ibbjf fighters and trainers, few were real mma guys carlos and Renzo were real deal tough guys

My martial arts school has Kron Gracie curriculum. Sadly it is closed by Covid. It was a Mom & Pop operation. The only other place in my area, was a Gracie Baha. Let's just say my Purple Belt level instructor, could bet all the Blk belts at that school.

Jean Jacques is one of the five Machado brothers that include the likes of Rigan and Carlos. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and he learned directly from the Gracies 40 years ago, as the Machados were connected to the Gracies through their mother who happened to be the sister of Carlos Gracie Jr's mother.

Ryan, I’m curious why you would frown upon adding wrestling or striking into gjj? If GJJ has “is not just ground work” but yet has been proven to be inferior in takedowns and striking, why not welcome wrestling/boxing/Muai Thai into the curriculum and exclude the time spent on striking/takedowns from GJJ?
People can add any skill set they want to make it what they want.

The Gracies are "still" relevant. They also charge more for BJJ (GJJ) lessons than most of their competitors do. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is patented, and schools that teach this system specifically must pay a Gracie family member a fee in order to be accredited by them.

Potential Video Subject: Does having such a strict curriculum produce the same jiujjtsu players? I feel like everyone would roll the same way especially at white and blue belt. Also does it kill creativity and make bjj less fun. I was thinkn bout this when you said white belts cant do half guard in your school.

Gracie or Machado training. Which one is better ?
Majdi Kamal Depends on what you are looking for. The Machados, as a rule, are more focused on competing. Not much Self Defense Done there. There students have little to no striking awareness on the ground as a result. They do not teach you how to close the distance against punches.
The brothers all know the stuff, they just do not promote or teach the material.

It is not Jiu Jitsu, it is GRACIE JIU JITSU aka BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU. The distinction is necessary because the japanese Jiu Jitsu is called Jiu Jitsu and it is not the same art Mr.Helio Gracie created.
So for as long as there is BJJ being learned or used anywhere in the World the GRACIE FAMILY is being represented.
I think this is misleading saying the Gracie family were the only ones teaching Jiu Jitsu in the U.S.A. There may not have been BJJ schools, but there have been a lot of Ju-Jitsu schools since the 1950s including off the top of my head Proff. Florendo Vistacion, Dr. Moses Powell, Dr. Philip Chenique, Proff. Wally Jay etc. who all ran Ju-Jitsu schools.
The Gracie Family I believe should be credited with making Jiu Jitsu to the public eye and legitimizing the effectiveness of the art.

I think the introduction of other instructors is integral to the development of jiu Jitsu. If we look at one coach in particular, John Danaher, whose precision in nomenclature, in my mind, will propel learning methodology radically and the proof is in the students ( GSP, Tonon, Ryan Bros, etc). I'd like to know your thoughts on jiu Jitsu taxonomy vs the 'im going to show you a move, dont know what it is called, but here is what you do' approach. Are you specific in your use of terms labels and definitions?
They are relevent. Kron is undefeated UFC fighter and Renzo owns the best GYM in the world.
Alex Miller kron hasn’t fought anyone that matters, and has less than 10 fights. renzos gym reputation is due to its prowess in “sport bjj”.

Great talk, but just one little detail. I would NOT bunch the machados with the gracies, never. What the machados were teaching, spreading, and still do is the original sportive aspect of jiu jitsu. The Gracie Family are the most relevant. For me, the Helio Gracie line is the most important, as they kept the original teaching. I am not at all in favor of sports, and the adjustments that have to be made to accommodate industry. This is coming from someone who does not do jiujitsu.
Good view points, but I'd have to disagree about the Machado's not being technically not family member. I'd say they are 100% and at that some of them were more skilled than some you mentioned.

Megaton was my first Jiu-Jitsu teacher all the way back to when he was at the boys and girls club. He is/was amazing.
To an outsider, Gracie Family's influence reminds me of the mafia.

Pretty much any Japanese martial art has many schools run by various families with there own slightly different style of judo, karate, jujitsu, etc. They usually expect the family to pass it on and try to keep it distinct. - Rusty
Judo, Aikido, Daito Ryu, Silat and Karate mostly from family members that passed on traditions.
And they behaved like one. Helio, George and Carlos Gracie used to ambush rivals and hit them between the three with metal pipes or metal objects.
It's documented that they did it at least 3 times. Once they were sentenced to jail, but they had highly influential friends (remember they taught JJ just to affluent members of Rio's society) and they were soon released.
In that occasion the victim was a wrestler, a respected teacher of physical education, that wasn't very impressed by the Gracies skills, and respectfully challenge them. He beat Carlos Gracie and they didn't like it. The Gracies have a long story of not accepting when someone beats them. His name was Rufino dos Santos.
i think you may be exaggerating some (a lot). do you know of the time the Luta Livre team "ambushed" the Gracie Academy with between 40-60 fighters when the academy had 10 (or less) members in there? if the Gracie family were so dastardly, why did the Luta Livre team not go in and just mess shit up? after all, they'd have deserved it, wouldn't they?
instead, they had a fight or two that they did (Rickson v Hugo Duarte, and Royler v Eugenio, IIRC), and after they were over, it was over. both sides separated and went their own ways.
at the end of the day, you were not there to see the Rufino event, so you've got a narrative in your head, and there's no changing your mind.

I hope they never put BJJ in the Olympic Games, that will certainly kill the art as the many tournaments did, even in Brazil in the 80s wasn’t to many tournaments and without as many, we had more time to do what I call “the complete jiu-jítsu”, with a lot of self defense, throws and ground, was a time that our goal wasn’t only win medals, but training of jiu-jítsu was a matter of surviving the streets of Rio, and that was the thinking among all the jiu-jítsu school’s the Gracies and non Gracies (like ours the Fadda Academy), but the creation of the BJJ F by Carlos Gracie Jr unified the country and changed the game “arte suave”.
But most people don't live in Río, and most people won't be involved in a street fight in their life time. And most people who are actually attacked in the street, will be able to defend themselves with any BJJ techniques (unless they have the real bad luck to be attacked by a martial artists or just some guy with tons of muscles). So most people want to train, get in shape, get some nice credentials, win some competitions (which in 99% of the cases are the only fights they will be involved in ever). It's always important to let the art follow its own course, many times it is picked up from where others left it and being added more aspects, more techniques. Sorry to tell you, but the Gracies stuff at a certain point stopped working, at least not against everyone (I saw it myself on a couple of occasions), people picked up the weak points, and when there is another martial art (doesn't matter which one right now) which evolved BECAUSE of BJJ (credits due to BJJ without a doubt), by learning how to avoid being at a disadvantage to a BJJ fighter, that's when BJJ (or any other art) also needs to move on to the next step. That''s called evolution. After all, the Gracies didn't stay in Río, they moved on, so should BJJ. Krav Maga was invented because of anti-Semitic attacks against Jews in the streets of Czechoslovakia. Very useful back in the day. Then within the military it had to be completely adjusted. Then in the streets of Tel Aviv during the terror attacks, ex-soldiers noticed that without weapons, the military KM had to be adjusted again. So it evolved. I will not even start telling you the story of Karate. Martial arts must evolve, nostalgy doesn't cut it.
Cool History! Man, you need to hit the beach. You're losing your tan. IBJJF will not relinquish to the IOC. However, the IOC is looking into a freestyle grappling competition. I think if a Freestyle Grappling is approved by the IOC it might turn a bit from the IBJJF -- USA FreeStyle Grappling matches will be pushed by government programs in tournaments much like Wrestling and Judo is pushed by other countries. I'd love to see Gary Tonon and Gordan Ryan win a medal for their country in freestyle grappling. Winning a medal for your country would be good for grappling. I know it was good for snowboarding -- Shawn White. Love the content -- hope you hit the beach.

Yes, you can learn jiu-jitsu anywhere. The problem is that most of these academies teach only sports jiu-jitsu! It is very difficult to find academies that teach the self-defence form of the art! (BTW, not saying sport BJJ won't work in the street. Just saying it's not optimal.)
If you want to learn jiu-jitsu anywhere and it be traditional self defense. Consider Gracie University and the gracie combatives program.

I’m pretty sure Renzo and Ralph have separated from Gracie Barra. Ralph punching out Flavio Almeida pretty much sealed that. It’s a shame because I’ve seen Renzo teach many many times back in the day wearing his Gracie Barra gi with the Tasmanian Devil logo. However, Renzo’s claim that Gracie Barra has gone soft maybe legit. But that leads me to wonder, hasn’t Renzo been much more focused on sport rather than traditional? I wonder....

Renzo has his own affiliation now. I know this because my current gym used to be Gracie Barra, but it's now Renzo Gracie.
When Renzo competes, he does MMA and No-Gi. He has not competed in a Gi in many years

If i remember correctly, Gregor "Gracie" is the half brother to Rolles and Igor whom he shares a mother with, but of different fathers. If Rolles and Igor's father was Rolls Gracie, unless Rolls' wife (and mother of his sons) is also a Gracie herself (by blood, not marriage) or married another Gracie male after Rolls passed, there is no way Gregor is a Gracie by birth.
Of course, there are other Gracie males who's father is not a Gracie, but their mothers are (Roger and Cesar come to mind).
I thought that Gracie university was working with the JJGF.

i dont think its that crucial to have a name brand..if you have access to a gracie and it seems right for you then go for it
but it doesnt seem relevant anymore -there are too many high level black belts without name recognition out there teaching really good quality jj..just find an academy that you jive with and a good instructor and train consistently and stick with it

I studied under Master Sauer for a time in Sterling, VA and am studying under the Machados. I wouldn't say that I'm unschooled in the history. Stop deleting my comments.
I also know the Gracies are mostly petty bs artists who use the title granted to them in the UFC to further their own heritage. Master Sauer was teaching the FBI and Navy SEALs, the Machados are responsible for evolving the game. Don't tell me that Royce is something special and don't tell me Rose knows what she's talking about concerning the rules. I know better, as do a lot of others.

Sure thing. Never trained, know nothing about jiu jitsu here. Ask yourself why jiu jitsu is evolving into a no-gi, catch wrestling form. Why are people disregarding the gi? What's the natural evolution that has been there since time immemorial? Grapples whenever used as target practice, in fact grappling always had the advantage in striker v wrestler matches throughout recorded history for the very same reasons they always will,its almost impossible to prevent the clinch if you yourself are not trained in wrestling, been proven since mixed fighting began

The Brazilian accent used to pronounce names in English is pretentious and annoying. Anyone who went to Brazil and demanded everyone pronounce their name in an American or British accent would be ostracized. If i have to say your name in a foreign accent i won't say it at all.
Also, the worship of Carlos and Helio and that first generation as prize pupils of Maeda is dishonest if you just look into that a little bit. What they did to donato and rufino was bad enough, never mind the rest of it.
The family promoted vale tudo and themselves very well and are probably the most important grappling group over the past 50 years and many of them seem like decent people, but that name comes with a lot of baggage as well. Business-wise it's a successful brand but fighting-wise (outside sport bjj) the world has left them behind. I'd rather just learn grappling from good grapplers and not have to deal with all the Gracie baggage.

“True” cousins (through blood) to Carlos, Sr’s youngest children (Rillion, Carlos, Jr, Crolin, IIRC) through his final wife, but not his older children (Rolls, Carlson, Robson, et al). And not cousins at all to Helio’s children.
But Brazilians use the term “cousin” for a lot of people who are not technically related to them through blood or marriage.
