So he was only 22 when he founded Kodokan Judo and had practiced martial arts for 8 years? He would have been like a brown belt or 1 Dan by todays standards. Pretty cool.

Judo is considered the sucessor to kito ryu jujutsu. Kano only got the master level scroll for kito ryu and used kito ryu theory on upsetting balance and using the oponents for e against them to create judo and keep all of kito ryus kata in modern judo as the koshiki no kata.
So basically judo is kito ryu jujutsu plus an expansion pass of new content he created or learned.
Random useless fact- the term judo was used by a former kito ryu master for his style hundred years before kano who simply revitalize the term for his new system.

In fact, young Kano's ideas and theories were still far from evolution and maturity. But he studied the catalogs and documents of the Kitoryu Jujutsu school as well as a tireless and introspective university student, and like a painter sketching a landscape on a canvas and gradually perfecting it, over four decades he developed his views on his style. which was known as Kano Jujutsu by other Jujutsu schools, he developed it until the mid-1930s and classified Kodokan Judo scientifically.

    It's Kodokan. Not Kokudan.
