Hey Ryan big fan of the channel, love the info you put out. I have a question involving the school. Is there any plans to move the school closer to the fort Worth area or even Arlington area. I live in Southwest Fort Worth and going to kama on the daily is out the question. I'm also trying to learn self defence/invisible jiu jitsu and wonder if I should bother with the schools around here since everything is sport oriented. Gracie garage is an idea in my head right now and could go to kama taking privates to make sure my technique is sharp. Idk if anyone can help me come up with a good solution it's you, also any Gracie University online curriculum stuff you got I would absorb like a sponge. Thanks, Antonio

I found that people are much more interested if they learn self defense in their first bjj class (meaning how to defend punches, close the distance, get the takedown, etc, not the rehearsed sequences). After learning those basic skills they will naturally develop interest in becoming better against other people who also know jiujitsu and therefore want to learn the sport. As Rener Gracie put it, self defense is jiujitsu against someone who doesn't know jiujitsu, sport jiujitsu is jiujitsu against other jiujitsu people.

Wonderful journey that you have had, and are having, in Jiu Jitsu professor. Thank you for sharing. You know when I think of it, it is really curious how GRACIE jiu jitsu is only a little less difficult to find today as it was so many years ago. Yet on every corner to one sees "brazilian Jiu jitsu" though it is not what Royce Gracie walked into the octagon with in 1993. I studied BRAZILIAN jiujitsu for 10 years before I heard an instructor say "self defense" ONCE during a class. I am a purple belt now and I am amazed to think I have NEVER studied "Gracie" jiu jitsu which started it all. Love your channel, keep up the wonderful work. THank you.

Started cross training in jiu-jitsu nearly 10 years ago, but because LA is so damn expensive in all fronts I had to take long hiatuses from formal training. Now I'm like over an hour to nearly three hours away from Houston, Austin and San Antonio with not a jiu-jitsu school in sight. Definitely makes me regret not taking those extra over time hours at work.

Ryan Young vs. Buchecha is a street fight. Buchecha is EVERYTHING Ryan talks down on. He’s sport oriented with zero self defense background. Ryan on the other hand says size doesn’t matter and sport guys can’t adequately defend themselves in the street. That said, him vs. buchecha would be fun to watch, and I’m sure it would be quick! Very cool, I just watched your vlog on "Ryan's jiu-jitsu journey". Did not know that Ryan had trained with ken Gabrialson. very few people have heard of him these days. It was Ken and Reylson Gracie that we first brought to Canada in July of 1993 for the "founding of Brazilian jiu-jitu in Canada". Reylson's self defense curriculum had a profound influence on the development of my Jiu-jitsu curriculum; and I think people can really benefit from his expanded and highly technical self-defense methods. were you able to adsorb that curriculum from ken and Rod?

Hi Ryan, Love your videos and I'm actually something like a fan. Now I have a question, would be cool if it gets an answer from you :-) The thing is, we don't have any tradition bjj schools the country where I live so I signed up in a gym that does bjj gi and no gi, kickboxing and some mixed..kind of what you mention in this video. The thing is I'd really like to graduate in bjj but therefore I feel I'd need to mainly attendance gi. Although, I'd like to progress in the other combat styles as well...they really fall behind because I feel if that if I don't go to the gi training at least 3 times a week, I will not progress belt wise...but I'd like to do more kickboxing and no gi but there's not that much of motivation because there's no way to climb a hierarchy...not sure how I should handle this...what would be your advice. Thanks. Love your videos. Regars.

I have to say, even as someone who knows almost nothing about jiu-jitsu (except a couple of years of judo newaza without chokes and locks), I found the videos I watched informative and oddly entertaining.
I apologize if a similar topic has been covered but I found that the best option for me to start GJJ/BJJ would be at a Gracie Academy Certified Training Centre, with my other options being a Gracie Barra school and a few MMA gyms. How well does the Gracie Combatives system do you conform to the ideals of traditional Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as you know it? Would that be a good place for me to start as an early 40’s, non-athletic individual?

What do you think about all these people claiming to be self-defense experts and stating that bjj would not work in a real fight? They claim that there are alot of variables in the street like multiple opponents, weapons etc... I believe in BJJ as a practitioner, but was wondering what was your take on this subject.

    • @m5a1stuart83
      @m5a1stuart83 5 лет назад +1

they are actually right and wrong, right, because you dont know who you are dealing with, their friends, weapons, and so on. if you take your opponent to the ground, you will end up winning or being hurt by rocks or any weapon nearby or even him carrying it. if you really want to take it to the ground you need to make sure you can submit him in short time. if you face someone that know how to wrestling, on concrete? you are screwed. Avoid street fight if necessary, put some protection stance (hands up guarding your chin and head), punch or kick for self defense only by aiming human weak body. And run from the scene, if you really sure your opponent just one, submit him as soon as possible.

And it’s unfortunate that most of the people that train jujitsu here. They have no idea about the self defense aspect of jujitsu. They compete in a few tournaments. And think they are well rounded. I am surprised at how few or little traditional jujitsu academics are here. Do you know of any traditional jujitsu academics in New York. I figured there has to be some here. In my search. I always suggest you join us at Dave Kama’s online teaching site www.kamajiujitsu.com/memberships/
As far as finding an actual studio teaching an emphasis on self defense concepts, the ONLY thing I can offer you (and in the end, I may still fail you here), is to look to join an academy near you that is affiliated with a master who has a reputation for stressing Jiu-Jitsu as a self-defense art such as Relson Gracie, Royce Gracie, or Pedro Sauer. Keep in mind, that even with these affiliates, you will NOT be learning from those masters directly.
It’s all up to the school owner.

Perhaps that is why my work is not finished, like if you roll half clock your head is pointed into the small circle, if you roll full clock your head is pointed outside the circle if you string two of either together you come up with a half and half rolling through the yin yang positions inside a larger circle, where when you enter or exit from the inside to the outside you are effectively either head out or head in in the same position. You can then roll over once completely and be at a 45 where you can go back into the center, and same at each 45 from there, in pa kua they do this with forward step, in karate they do this with a reverse turning 185 step to another 1 step. And the end up in the same orientation thinking that the outside structure works on the late heaven sequence where your top line goes negative positive negative positive in succession is your mount guard or any of the other half clock positions on a 45 and the inside work is on a 90. My question is what does the difference between the head out and the head in on the outside circle translate to on the early late heaven circuit?

Tom Mireles 10th Planet was started by Master Eddie Bravo. His original stated goal was to develop a no Gi MMA Guard.
This means his goal was competition/sport oriented.
Since the early days, the style has attracted competitors, and they have become very sport oriented.
They do not train in the Gi. You will not find any self defense training in their style.

I understand your point of view if were talking self-defence or a fight. However you have to remember that sport is different and yes while you need to look for the submissions often times you can also win by points and should do that. Winning by a submission is winning a fight but winning by points is winning a match and often times you need to do both. Remember that sport is a safe way to test yourself and not a real fight. You want your students to win by subs then there are submission only comps that you guys can do whenever you want too. Your not a comp school but its always go to test your jiu-jitsu or grappling in a different area. Just my opinion.

I was mislead about self defense and why we shouldn’t actually focus on it. Jesus says “if they strike you, turn and give them the other.” This is so we remain innocent and show forgiveness like He did when He was innocent but persecuted. The Bible also says “Fear not that can kill the body, but not the soul. Fear the one who can kill both body and soul in hell.” Amen! So even as a patriotic American, it’s a tough line to see when we fight and we when don’t. Praise the Father in Heaven. I hope this BJJ stuff isn’t leading into a cult or pseudo religion. Matt time is a hobby, a business, a sport. Not a soul saver. Amen! I had to learn this after 4 years of no gi.

For faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things unseen, I have the keys to hell and death and my reward is with me, follow me and I will make you fishers of men, for those who overcome I will be there god and they will be my son, some laid in the grave waiting for a more glorious resurrection, when the Lord God calls surely I come quickly even so come lord jesus may the grace of the Lord jesus christ be with us all amen, carry neither script, nor purse, nor sword and salute no man by the way. "Birth Death burial resurrection" I am the way, the truth, and the life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever belivith in him shall not Parrish but have everlasting life. I'm also a Christian, and I'm a martial artist it's all about who's in charge it's not us it's god. And a person can kill another but the reason they don't is because God can kill you more than once.
