    Ralphs' school in SF was the same in the late 90s/early 2000s with Kurt/Ralph. Very tough. All the top guys (who didnt get hurt) went on to have schools and be top black belts. I had the privilege to meet Relson once at the Pan Ams in 2003? He has an aura to him - you know he is the real deal... Thanks for this video!

    I just switched from a Rilion Gracie Academy (got to train @ headquarters in Miami as well) to Fight Works (Relson) Academy. It is a world of difference. Heavy amounts of Self Defense based Jiu jitsu and the techniques are full of invisible concepts and are very “shark like” in its style. Simple yet highly effective technique. I love it. My Professor is a 3rd stripe & Relson’s 40 Black Belt. I’m blessed indeed.

      @Patrick Gaul can I ask some questions about him?
      I want to start tranining and I can choose between Rolker Gracie and Relson Gracie.
      I like the self-defense approach Relson has but he seems the type of person that won't accept suggestions or questioning. Is he like that?
      He also looks very old. Does he still train with the students phisically?
      Is he open to new moves? From what he says, it makes me believe he only teaches what he has learned with his father and doesn't accept new stuff developed later.
      What do you know about him?

    • @patrickgaul3526
      @patrickgaul3526 3 года назад

      rmagcastro There is not another Relson. He is old skool just like the rest from that generation. There are plenty of black belts that balance old and new ideas. What area you in?

I train at the Gracie Academy in Torrance whenever I get to the LA area, so I have been able to train with Ryron and Rener Gracie as well. I have also been on the mat with Shell Young from Tako Jiu Jitsu when he visited Relson Gracie Jiu Jitsu Las Vegas. Hey Ryan, Since you have trained with both Relson & Rickson....what are your thoughts on Relson's style of Jiu-Jitsu vs Rickson's style of Jiu-Jitsu? Would you find the two of them very comparable as far as pressure, weight distribution, etc? Would a Relson school teach everything a Rickson school (like Kama Jiu-Jitsu) teaches as far as that stuff and details, and the "invisible Jiu-Jitsu stuff" go?

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  5 лет назад +1

      Both are top of the food chain. I’ve learned valuable lifelong lessons from both. Relson told me straight up, Rickson is the best. Very few people know Rickson’s JiuJitsu, so it would be difficult for ANYONE to teach it, even if they think they know the concepts and watched a video of or attended a seminar taught by Rickson or one of his handful of firsthand black belts.
      I was pretty knowledgeable when I came to Dave as a brown belt. But turns out there was so much I didn’t even know existed.
      My cousin Shel, who flew to CA just for a private with Rickson a couple years ago, had his mind blown at what he didn’t know that he didn’t know. And he’s a long time black belt under Egan and Enson Inoue, two of the very first people who trained under GM Relson in HI.
      Hope that answers your question.

    Hello Ryan,
    I found a Relson Gracie Academy in my town, as well as a Gracie Academy where they follow the curriculum set by Rener and Royce Gracie (Gracie University). Both academies have a fundamentals course, but it seems that the Gracie University affiliate has a more step-by-step curriculum.
    From the look of it, it seems that Relson's Academy has more members. From your experience being involved in Relson's academy, is their fundamentals class similar and step-by-step as well?
    I appreciate all of your help.

      @Kaz lemon I disagree on one point - I believe Royce was open-minded to cross training.
      Royce used wrestling double-leg takedowns in UFC 1.also mastered boxing's speed bag (UFC 3 promo, I believe) and he used Jon Jones style oblique kicks since the beginning.

    One of my bigger regrets was not training with Relson in the nine years I lived in Hawai'i. I saw those flyers at UH, too, but felt to invested in TKD to change styles (trained with Joe Bennet first, then Danny Kim). BTW, were you still training with Relson when Phil Cardella started?

      Yes and no. I think Prof Steve no longer affiliates with GM Relson. As a result, his new master will determine his rank, not Relson.

    Ryan,
    I love your videos. You have been training for over 30 years...why are you only a first degree black belt? Rickson in his grandmaster acceptance speech laid out the criteria for all the black belt levels and you and Dave Kama have far exceeded them. Yet, you and Dave our fairly low black belts but, have yet to receive your proper promotions. I feel as though Rickson may slight his nonfamialal students in favor of family promotions(Gracie, Machado, Valente, etc). Thoughts? I could be completely wrong but, just my perspective.

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  4 года назад +3

      2nd now. But I got my BB 3/2012 from Dave.
      As far as the ranks, I don’t care. Neither does Dave. Our rank is what our master gives us, based on what he feels. The timeframe is only a guideline.
      Dave, the KJJ instructors, and I are turning out awesome KJJ practitioners. That’s all that matters at the end of the day.

      Scott was the first non-Brazilian to go from white belt to black belt under Relson. He's a 3rd degree under Relson but broke away sometime in the late 2000s. He runs and operates his own association Devine Jiu-Jitsu which has 12 schools, 10 of those schools in South Carolina/Georgia/Florida.
