- Think Share 35: Now that I have had my LGBTQA Pride/Freedom Flag up for two school years, I wanted to share some good moments that have occurred due to its presence in our class. I've had student wear the flag as a cape and I've had students come out to me before their parents! I won't be sharing their come out stories as its not mine to share.

I wish teachers at my school would do this. I live in southern Louisiana in an area that is predominantly catholic and there is a lot of hate. Thank you for doing this for your students and inspiring others❤️🏳️🌈

Louisiana represent! And I’m in the same boat. I live in Livingston parish and they’re not the most accepting unfortunately. Some of the rules can be extremely homophobic and sexist for that matter. But yes I agree. it’s pretty hard to find in good ole La, but there’s quite a few of us, and while we may not be widely accepted, we’re accepted within each other.

i don't know why i'm saying this but i am:
sometimes ill see a ring or something i like and put it on like you would a wedding ring and joke around saying i'm married. a couple of times my dad has said "to who? Jacob?" (one of my old friends) and then he'll proceed to say "or are they a girl?" and every time i freak out because i actually am gay

I wish my teacher did this but I go to a religious school so I don't think people would agree to put it up. (Even though my music teacher came out as gay) I think they still should!
Well, some religious people have over looked the direct words that speak against homosexuality and look at the big picture of loving one another, so, maybe it could start small like having small pride flags in some teachers' rooms.
I also go to a religious school and one of my teachers wears a pin with the flag on it on his lanyard for his ID because we have to wear those and one of is students gave it to him a few years back if that’s an idea you could use

I came out to my mom, she thinks I am just confused and that its just a phase but she still doesn't like me getting pansexual flags to put in my room and I am unable to celebrate pride month. *o o f*
Do you have friends you can celebrate with that your parents won't fond out about? ...I was listening to Kevin Wanzer, a really great speaker with a trans daughter, and he said to his son when they were transitioning, that they would keep the boy clothes, and his daughter said back, well lets buy you some girl clothes in case its just a phase, best come back of all time! (might be risky dropping that on your parents :)

I came out to my parents as bi a couple months ago, around January and my dad was completely cool w it but I could tell my mom didn’t believe me, I want to put a flag in my room but I don’t know how to bring it up.... any ideas if so that would rly help!

I liked the +survivor of the important videos playlists' idea, when I grew up, I could have anything I wanted on my walls, you could make something small, put it up, then make/buy bigger things till you are satisfied, you can always say, "well i've had this up for a few weeks and you didn't say anything"

for a history project we had to draw a picture of something that represents the USA and one that represents us. I drew a pride flag and two boys holding hands. my teacher loved it so much and hung it up. lots of kids kept saying things like ha your so gay and one person told me I was going to hell. but two kids came up to me and told me they were gay too and really liked my picture. it was awesome
Shawn Lane I also did a history project about a social issue so I made rainbow cupcakes that spelled out Ellen’s name on the top to show my pride. My teacher was just like cool. These taste good

I have a question for you. Do you accept the Confederate battle flag, or are you aginst it?
I know that I am not fully educated on the meaning of it and have not done full research, my current understanding of the confederate flag is that the majority of what it represents is the southern states wanting to keep enslaving people. So, if a student asked if I would hang it in class, I would have a long conversation with them and some history teachers about whether I would put it up on the request. So, to answer your question, I don't have much of an opinion about it as I live in MA and I don't see them often, nor do I have acceptance or rejection of it.

I think if you bring up conversations to see whether ppl will be supportive or not is a good first thing to know, and identifying people you will be able to talk with if some people don’t support you

My math teacher had a pride flag in his room. I mean we all knew the teacher was gay but at least he wanted to also display it. Love him as a teacher.
That’s great to hear about publicly gay teachers, I imagine it is harder for them than straight men like myself, if your teacher would be interested, I’d be interested in interviewing them asking about issues they’ve felt with having it up and any discrimination they’ve faced:)
This is great!! If only my schools had this when I was younger. My parents are gay and having this kind of support and love in the classroom would have meant the world to me, so I know your some of your kids feel the same way! Keep doing this, you are changing the world!

Well first off, I believe that I would have been bullied a lot less. I was constantly called gay and I was made fun of for having gay parents pretty much every day during elementary school. I went to a catholic school for my elementary school years and we were constantly told that homosexuality was a sin-which then made me a bigger target for bullying. If a teacher I had would have had a small item that showed they supported or even talked to me about it I would have been a lot more happy at school. The only people I had to comfort me and tell me it was okay was my parents-but I didn’t believe them because I believed they were bias.
I switched to a more liberal school in middle school. I keep my parents a secret which made it hard to make friends. Eventually, I made a friend. I never straight up told her about my parents but I was comfortable enough with her that I didn’t card if she found out. A few other kids found out and their responses weren’t as cruel as the ones in catholic school, but most of them consisted of “oh my god that is so weird” which still hurt my feelings. At this new school I knew of no one who had gay parents, no one was openly gay, and not one teacher had anything that could tell a student they were an ally or apart of the community.
Once I got to high school things we a lot better. Still none of the teachers had anything in their classroom but there were many students who were apart of the community and a few teachers who were too.
If I had a teacher like this in my elementary and middle school years, I would have had a lot more confidence in my self and more of a sense of self and belonging. I wouldn’t have felt so alone-I wouldn’t have felt that my family is wrong.
You are so awesome :) I love teachers like you who create safe spaces for LGBTQ+ students regardless of their own sexual orientation. It's really kind of you to encourage other teachers to do so and to also show through your videos to students worldwide that good teachers exist and supportive adults exist regardless of the student's family situation. I came out to my teacher recently and I'm so grateful that teachers like you two exist, it means so much :) thank you even though you are not my teacher, you give me hope that the world can be a good place

I miss the days when teachers didn't talk about their personal lives to kids. Straight/gay- we never knew, but today's people seem to need acceptance of other people's children. Me personal, if you talked about your ex life to my child, we will have serious problems
I came out to my teachers before my parents actually come out to my parents three days ago and I wish my teachers have done this along with cutting in when I it or at least try harder When I was being told homophobic shit

that's so cool! I think it means a lot to people to be so open about your support and I wish I'd have a teacher in middle school who did that! some friends and I tried to found an LGBTQA+ Safe Space/Support Group for our school but it didn't work unfortunately

I think that was about 4 years ago or so when we tried for a support group. (We were 15-17 years old, after middle school, when we were a bit more confident). Our principal wasn't exactly supportive even when we actually found a teacher who would've helped us in case it ever got started. (She was really nice and was open to talking about social and political topics with students). I don't actually live in the USA, but in Germany, and bureaucracy is kind of a big obstacle here, I'm not even sure who could actually make a decision about a group like that, if it was the principal's decision or even higher up in the educational system (If it was higher up, the principal wouldn't have fought for it) and it probably would've taken ages, until some of us weren't even in school anymore.
In the end, a friend of mine, who is also really interested (and good at!) working with kids and other teens, got to create some kind of "help email", were kids in need could contact him anonymously and have someone to talk to. And there is a LGBT youth center in the next big town (Munich), so at least something, I guess.
My teacher has a bunch of flags in their room, he’s the first person I came out to as trans. Well me and my friend decided we wanted to get him a flag but we didn’t know what. I asked him “would it be ok if I got you a pride flag? Would you hang it up?” He said “Yes! Of course!” We naught 3 flags online one for me one for my friend and one for my teacher. He hung it up. It’s a full sized flags and I asked him “if you got into trouble would you take it down.” He said “I’d switch schools” XD I love him.

If only we would be allowed to do this... Our school has a lot of hate against the LGBTQ community. I have a teacher that is Pansexual and she is amazing. She has a small pan flag on her desk and bunch of posters in her room. Just like you said she was the first person I came out to about being Bi and everyone in that class became friends soon we all created the LGBTQ+ friends club. Students and teachers were recommending to close the club and we were too powerful and we still have the club open. It defiantly brought all of us together. And I never noticed how many students are actually part of the community. And one day we all decided to bring our pride flags and wear them as capes to show our support. The whole school was a rainbow. I saw all of the flags out there and thought to myself I'm glad that I'm part if this community. Even though we have shown how many are part of the community and even though we might identify as something other than what everybody else says we are still people and its okay to identify as what you want. We still get hate about the club, but its not bringing us down.

I'm proud of this teacher, in my school last year, I was bullied soooo much, and the teachers basically did not care. This teacher is not like this at all, and i'm very grateful that he does this.

That’s so awesome, that was some of the advice I gave for students that wanted pride flags in their rooms, to give small flags that will fit in cups or those little stickers, you’ve probably empowered hundreds of 🏳️🌈 teenagers these past years
As a woman in the LGBTQ community. I believe it is inappropriate to come out to students. Hanging the pride flag in class should not be allowed. I believe it's disrespectful. How can you hang the pride flag up in class? I believe it's a distraction kids cannot even go to school anymore and learn because this is what's keeping them from learning.
As a student, I think your an inspiration as a teacher. I myself am a pansexual, and I know my parents will not accept it. knowing your kids trust you, that makes you a fantastic teacher. What I want to be when im older is a teacher, and this is one of the many things I plan to do. I am a straight ally with homophobic parents and I can't wait to leave to be so open about equality and not hiding from this topic with my parents.

Just sharing! Your wicked ways separates you from the Holy God. Your sins cannot be in God’s presence. You are far from Him therefore. You’ve supressed the truth of His existance. God is angry at the wicked everyday. Every moment you refuse to repent, you are heaping up wrath against the Day of wrath. The wrath of God (because He is a God of justice and rightousness who hates evil) is something to be afraid of. A sinner like you must be terrified of your condition. Yet, God wants you to repent and wants to forgive you of ur sins through Jesus Christ whom God sent on your behalf and love for you. Jesus became ALL your sins and paid the punishment for them ALL ✝️ Salvation is freely avaliable given by God’s grace through faith in what Jesus Christ did for you! Jesus is like that plea deal who paid the price for your crime (sins). By Him can you only have a perfect standing before God. Or would you rather pay for your crime (sins) which is eternal separation (hell) from God because sin cannot be in His presence? You either accept the plea deal or not. Repent and beleive in the gospel of Jesus Christ. He is just one prayer away. And dont rely on yourself to change from your wicked ways... Let Jesus have His way in you and trust God to give you new desires and a new heart 🥰😊 Trust Him. Acknowledge, receive, bow down to Jesus who is Lord. Surrender yourself to Him and receive Him as your Savior by faith

@@ashloomis6017 I was once an atheist as well. And like nearly all atheist, I was ready to die an unbeliever in God. Meaning, I was ready to die separated from God for eternity. And eternal separation from God means we will be in the lake of fire, hell. But I am glad God proved me wrong. He is real, which the finite mind and human wisdom would reject and cannot comprehend. It takes faith. Many don't want to believe in God because it means that you have to turn away from all your sins... but let me ask, is it worth it to burn in hell for eternity to fornicate with the same sex just one time or to spend eternity with God in heaven because you trusted in Jesus Christ?

This is an amazing video ❤. I came out to my parents a while ago but most people really didn't know i was bisexual. So I got tired of hiding it. I got to hook up with my crush (a boy) that I wanted to ask out for 4 years now but it was pretty hard to reach out and I just never had the time. He got me this mask which is a black mask with an lgbt heart on the bottom left corner of the mask. I wear it to school everyday now and I'm sure most people know by now that im an lgbt member because of my mask. It feels good to not hide it anymore. A little off topic, but I'm kinda scared to tell my parents that I'm dating a boy. We've been dating for about 3 months and my parents don't know. They know I'm bisexual and they support me. But I feel like it would be a little awkward if they knew. If you do see this, I'd love some advice since you seem very knowledgeable. If so ty and have a good day 😊 💓
Well, you know your parents better than I do, and it sounds like you want to be open with them and avoid possible shock/confrontation, it sounds like testing the waters might be a good way to gauge their reaction, you could say something like... I got asked out by a boy and see pretend like it hasn’t been going on just yet, and let them ease into the idea of you dating boys.. I could imagine them sharing joy with you about that kind of situation

But rn I am going to wait because my boyfriend is acting kinda off so I want to wait and see what happens. Like we normally talk a bunch out of school but he just hasn't been on, but we still talk in school so im a little confused about that.
Also you are probably one of the nicest people I've talked to. You understand me, most people at my school say some pretty not nice things about lgbt people. Also update on the mask, I have got a couple compliments about it and they were from other lgbt members and it is always a nice experience

Love it! Really wish I could have a flag like that for myself, but parents aren’t always accepting. But it’s nice to see the support from teachers, because we don’t always get that at home. I’ve come out to a few of my teachers, and before my parents, it feels really good to have a space where I can finally express myself without fear. Although some people can be unaccepting, or just don’t understand the struggle, I find hope that the majority of people do. And I’ve seen that especially the younger generations tend to be more educated on these subjects, and are more accepting of diversity. Sending love to everyone who sees this 💜🏳️🌈

Leah Clifford in my opinion imagine being lgbt in a community that does disagree, that person would feel awkward and left out enough to even cause harm to themselves where as if you just disagree with lgbt in a community that supports it you may feel a little discomfort but I think the point of bringing awareness to lgbt in situations like this (classroom ect) is to make people feel that people accept them and even may be to start spreading lgbt so these type of people (non supporters) realize it’s ok that love is love

Kaitlyn Rylee I understand, but going to that class everyday would make me probably tear up not cause I feel left out but (I know this is gonna sound typical and stupid) but its a life of sin and sin is death and me knowing that, going to that I would want to cry for every one cause they might be going to Hell and I don't want that and for me the flag symbolizes death and I don't want people slowly dieing in their sin but they are. Sometimes its so hard for me cause I just want to let it go, I just want to let it go that people are going to Hell cause of this but I can't (I'm not saying this in a way of religious talk, its so serious and dreadful for me). I know all of the homosexuality stuff does look beautiful but take the music and romance away and its sickening. Your hearts are meant for much more. Eternity, and your only filling it with this life which is very dissatisfying. I'm sorry, I've thought about your mindsets very much please consider mine.

I came out to my tutor group about 3 years ago. I was talking to them about homophobic bullying when one boy put his hand and asked “are there gay teachers in the school?” I said yes but wasn’t going to name them for obvious reasons, and he asked “well how do you know?” And I told him/them that they felt comfortable telling me and oh yeah, I’m gay too. There was a little stunned silence for a second or so and the boy put his hand back up and asks “ when’s lunch?”. And that’s my coming out to class story. 😂😂
Paul Flood wow! I’m really not sure what to make of that besides disappointment that you didn’t at least get a hug or confirmation of your existence and revealed identity
You have to remember, this was the first day for these kids for what you would probably call middle school, so they were new to me and new to each other, so I think any kids coming to hug me would have been a little weird, even for me! :)
Coming out to your parents tip:
If anyone mentions LGBT+, later when you and your parent(s) are alone ask what it means. Even though you know what it stands for they will give you their opinion on it.
You can turn on the radio in June and have a pretty good chance that someone will say "LGBTQ+", which will give you the opportunity to ask them.

Thanks for being an awesome teacher. When you’re coaching students about coming out to their parents, I hope you’re making sure that this is a safe thing for them to do, especially in middle school. Remember that something like 40% of homeless youth in America are queer kids who have been kicked out. And even if they’re not kicked out, there is nothing so shredding to sense of self as being rejected by your parents. So, I’m just saying make sure the kids you talk to are physically and emotionally safe, and give them resources where they can get support that their families might not be able to provide.
yes, I totally agree with you, I'd rather see a young gay person hide part of their identity from the parents rather than being homeless, then will may never grow to forgive their parents or grow to be happily out, self-expressed and successful.

wait, seriously is it though, I'm super self concious about it, and I've been considering wearing the pride flag as a cape tomorrow for the pride parade, and I'm not gay, i'm an ally. I'm afraid of offending the people I want to support.

Think Share Well the main problem I have is students in my school not understanding, and they think I'm weird and I don't have many friends because of this. I can understand where they're coming from, because it's quite uncommon and they're not used to it. But it's still hard..
as a young teen part of the lgbtq+ community, I find this so amazing and I wish my school would put something up its currently pride month and I'm super excited to announce to the world that I'm part of something so special. You are so inspiring, thank you for allowing a safe space where lgbtq+ students feel comfortable!!!!

I made a post on my Instagram about being bisexual and how it is okay because this is who I am and I'm proud of it. I wear my LGBTQ+ flag out in public as a statement to the world that I'm not afraid to be myself :)

The one thing I would say about the flag is, turn it on it’s side cause that’s more aesthetically pleasing. Or don’t because it’s beautiful either way.

B. I would say the sticky note wall of what students are thankful for is the focal point. You can see it in the background of my user picture.
