I left middle school when I was bullied and homeschooled high school as a gay trans educator this video gives me hope for teachers teaching next generation perhaps even our kids. I also love that the kids art is on your bulletin board

I live a extremely conservative part of Texas and the LGBTQA community does not get a lot of representation out here. We're a small town (400 people in the actual town) and a little over 2k in the High school school. Last year the High School opened a GSA club to provide a safe space for students who identified as LGBTQA or were an ally. Immediately, there was so much hate in the school. Every GSA poster that was put up was ripped down within the hour, and to this day there is only one remaining. The only reason that it is still standing is that it's 15 ft above the floor. I remember my Math teacher whining when the kids who did the announcement talked about GSA. There are certain teachers (maybe 5 that I know of) that openly support kids in the community, and contributed to the club last year (My chemistry and geometry teacher included). However, they get a lot of hate from the student body. I'm pretty sure these factors are why we no longer have a GSA. Only after 3 months of it being a thing, it was shut down. I've been lucky enough to find a small group of friends who identify with a large variety of sexuality/genders. We still face so much negativity daily, but seeing you hang a pride flag in your classroom is encouraging. I just wish I could move to a prominently liberal state and see how much the school systems differ. I think I can speak for the Montgomery Texas LGBTQ+ community when I say thank you.
Thank you for your feedback and story! I'm really glad to know there are some students that could really gain from something simple like a flag. Maybe you could show a teacher you believe in, this video and maybe they would be inspired to do the same. And if students rip down something in the classroom, that is vandalism, which can be prosecuted by the admin, which could make an example that gay-bashing/hatred isn't tolerated in terms of vandalism. That could be a place to start. You could even write an anonymous letter to a teacher with this link or a QR code.
xRea Games remember it's not all about the state. I live in Illinois (an extremely liberal state) but the town I live in is very conservative. We have a GSA club but most people are too scared to join. My towns filled with racist, homophobic, transphobic idiots.

I'm just 14. It's summer now and I have just finished my middle school career. I'm happy to continue my education in high school but I'm surly going to miss one of my most favorite teachers. We do this thing at my school called the day of silence and because one of the many clubs I'm in is Cultural Awareness I for sure was happy to participate. Some say silence has no affect but when you live in a world that relies on communication and social media, it actually has a huge affect. For the day of silence we wear a tag that says "I'm silent for...." then your reason. So when I walked in to my English Language Arts block and seen my teacher, I read her reason of silence to myself and nearly cried of happiness. Of course I had a few kids snicker at my reason, being the same as my teachers (LGBTQ+ Awareness) but those were few and at the end I seen a much more positive impact. At my school nothing was done really if you were called 'gay' or insulted the community at all so by my teacher simply having this reason I felt like I could be myself. I just wanted to let you know that because you did this one simple thing, there are definitely kids in your class(s) that feel loved and supported that you are helping without even knowing it. Thank you so much! We need more teachers that are as open and caring for their students as you are.
Hey Moomin! I respect that you have an opinion but what you just said is nearly equal to when Hitler dehumanized Jews. He uses his flag to show diversity not only LGBTQ+ people. I went to a catholic school for elementary and middle school, and all the teachers at my school were homophobic. They all judged me when I was outed as gay to my grade. Things were terrible and I hated just walking into school. Seeing something like this in a classroom, just as a sign of safety in one of the classes would've made so much of a difference. There needs to be more teachers like you.

Hello 👋 I know your comment is old, but I wanted you to know that you are valid. I know that you don't need my validation, however, I wanted you to know you have someone. My Significant Other is also Asexual, so I know, second hand technically, the struggles of some Ace's in our own community. I know that some people go out of there way to invalidate, and shove away ace's. I hope that you have never had to experience this, but if you have, I sincerely apologise from the bottom of my heart that some people don't understand how important love truly is in our community. I want to be a friendly reminder that there are people everywhere who love, care, and accept you exactly how you are. I hope everyday from here on out only gets better for you.

I was raised by a gay father who was also a teacher in my local high school. He always had a pride flag in his classroom, he started teaching in the early 1990s in Canada. He wanted everyone to know they were welcome to be their true selves with him. Seeing your flag made me cry. It reminded me how far we've come and how much work we as a community still have to do. You are setting a great example by getting those kids to think openly and critically at a young age. I wish my teachers had been this way growing up.
My children attend a very progressive school in Southern California, where they are very open and accepting on this topic. They welcome all backgrounds, ethnicities, sexualities, etc... I'm very thankful our kids have that option and I can't imagine sending them anywhere else. You are doing the right thing by spreading that message and I hope more follow your lead. I respect the courage you have by doing this with the possibility of backlash from the community and your administration. 👌

man, I wish i had a teacher like you when I was younger. I'm asexual/panromantic and trans, and in school, while I wasn't bullied per say, people just tended to avoid me, and it would have been so wonderful to know that at least one person wouldn't judge me, at least one person would see me as just another human rather than "oh that weird gay kid" the year after I graduated high school, my high school finally started a GSA and i'm just so glad that kids in that school now have a place where they can feel safe to be themselves.
And also it shows that people who are straight that they are free in a way because now they’re A lot of stereotypes going around about people who happen to be very eccentric and it just let people know that weather you’re apart of LGBTQA+ or straight , this flag is about peace and love and acceptance for all 💫✨❤️

K c I think causing an environment where students can feel safe is important, and when students feel unsafe, they don’t learn as well, I have had one student that has a problem with the flag and dozens that are really happy it’s there and have asked other teachers to carry it too, so, I would say as a teacher that listens to my students and what empowers them, then I am doing my job appropriately

Used to be asexual. There is a thing called asexual heteromantic which I think is perfect for me. I’m not a sexual person and I’m not interested in it but romantically liking guys is a better thing for me than sexually liking one. Idk if I’m straight or asexual heteromantic.
I live in Mississippi and this is... so beautiful to see. I want to form a GSA here in Corinth Mississippi for the sole reason of having that support, protection, and community but I would have to get a teacher's recommendation and I think It's gonna be hard for me to bring myself to ask one and come out to them all at once.
Well, lets think, do you know other students that would also want to form a GSA? And do you know of any teachers that seem to be more liberal? I imagine history teachers might be a good place to look first as they teach things like this, or a current events class. Another idea, I know I love inspirational quotes and posters and flags, if a student came to me asking: "I have this idea for a poster...would you put it up if I made it?" and if the idea where something more liberal or maybe like a quote from Ellen, or if it were like a US history teacher and the quote was from Hamilton the musical. (Lin Manuel Miranda is gay) those could be some actions you could take that might not require a big step of coming out. OOORRR, you could consider taking a giant leap of courage and give yourself permission to be yourself in the face of we'll say 'disagreement' and just ask. You could also ask teachers if they know of any other teachers that might be interested in starting a GSA, if you don't ask them directly, you may get a less confronting response. comment back to let me know what you end up doing or not doing. I'd like to think all educators are in it to support youth no matter what, and I would imagine, at worst, you might ask, a teacher would say, no I don't know anyone that might be interested, and if they are homophobic, that could change your relationship, but I don't think they could get away with outwardly discriminating against you.
Actually, I'm taking a public speaking class and the topic was something I could do to change the school, area for the better... and I talked about forming a GSA in front of the entire class. Frankly only a couple of my classmates were interested but I think it counts more because they're big supporters. I do know a history teacher that is pretty open minded so I think it'd be a good idea to talk with him, thanks for the suggestion. I actually made this little card for a prototype kinda thing, it had a quote from Steven Universe on it, a rad show kinda depicting gay relationships. I never showed it to any teachers but I did show it to some people who found interest in the idea. Thank you so much; I'll give it my best shot!
- Also about the outright discrimination thing, a teacher got fired last year for calling another gay student an "abomination" so I guess that's good? I mean I hope the other teachers at least learned.

In seventh grade, we had two new teachers and one of them really did not like us saying gay as in happy and she always said don't say gay it's an insult and just made me and a few of my friends that are in the LGBTQ+ really upset that we couldn't just be ourselves. the other teacher had a rumor going around that she was bisexual. She was super close with another teacher. she got fired and everyone was so shocked because she was an amazing teacher everyone got good grades. The more I think about the more i think she got fired because of the rumor.
I wish that my school had a teacher like this. I dropped out cuz of being bullied, both verbally and physically, because of my sexual and gender orientation. I was the first openly lgbt persoN at my school, and I was bullied and harrassed for it by both students and teachers alike.

In my school, there's a high population of LGBT+ students, and in every classroom there's either a flag, or some sort of button on their corkboard. On one of the second floor hallways, there's a pride wall that they change every couple months (its been key LGBT figures, definitions of intersex and asexual, various LGBT resources in our city, ect)

none of the teachers have exactly put flags in their rooms but it makes me feel good that in the hallways there is always something like the board for the gay-straight alliance club or this picture of an astronaut on the moon but with a pride flag and outside a lot of classroom doors say "safe space" in a little rainbow triangle. and because of that a lot in my school can be open about their orientation, I mean some boys will do the usual "that's so gay' joke but they are 12 yr old boys, what do you expect.

Zachary Watson it is. We even have a few trans kids and the school helps them come out and since my friends family didnt accept him one of the teachers gave him boy clothes to wear. And they tell all the teachers to preferably call them theri pronouns
I have a teacher so similar to him. She teaches us about not discriminating against people and the views of the people many of us discriminate against. I had realized I was a lesbian, but I had so much internalized homophobia that I would accept it and mostly repressed it. With her help and my social studies teacher (who is a lesbian), I accepted myself and am comfortable with myself. I don't think many people realize how helpful teacher are to students who live in a homophobic space and are queer

I wish I had teachers like you. In my town, people hate LGBTQA. I'm a lesbian, so people frown upon me. My girlfriend and I were holding hands in the hallway, and a teacher stopped us and said, "Stop. That's disgusting. Only boys and girls can do that." Homophobic people make me sick. The Pride Flag was created by Mr. Gilbert Baker from SF whom died March 31st .
He was asked by his friend Harvey Milk back in 1978 to create a symbol of pride that would replace the awful, negative Pink Triangle that the Nazis had assigned to all Homosexuals during the war to identify them. Then later the Nazis would arrest them, process them and put them into the hard labor death camps. Mr. Baker chose the Rainbow, beauty created by nature itself. All six colored stripes are symbolic and represent what every Gay person is entitled to as a Human Being, the same as Straight People. Like you stated in your video here are the meaning of the colors:
Red = Life, Orange = Healing, Yellow = Sunlight, Green = Nature, Blue = Serenity and Harmony, and Violet = The Human Spirit of Survival
The Dark Angel also red is more of a color for violence and blood or war paint for alot of tribes back then not life

My science and mathematics teacher are married and work in the same school (they are a same sex couple and a lot of the other kids think it’s “weird”) they both have pride flags in the class next to our Canadian flag and always start our class with a math/science fact of the day along with a LGBT fact. There’s been a lot less homophobia in our classrooms now and that just give me more faith in humanity.
i wanna thank you for being such an amazing person. when i was in school, there really was no place for LGBTQA students. My senior year, my math teacher came out as gay and put an initiative out for a club for us to all come together and feel comfortable with ourselves. Being a part of the club made me feel so welcome and loved for who i am, and i know it did for so many other students, and even some teachers. The fact that you are doing this for such young students is so heartwarming as its so unseen for kids under 18 to really be told that who they are and who they love is ok. You are a beacon of hope! keep spreading the love!
